  • This video will show you how to change out the battery on Nest Protect Gen. 2. The Protect Gen. 2 smoke detector uses 3 lithium AA batteries. The Nest Protect Gen 2 has a flip style battery cover. This makes the battery change easy on the smoke detector. This is and advantage over the Nest Protect first Gen.

Just had the first of my 2 wired protects give the low battery warning and had to replace the 3 Energizer lithium batteries. I was expecting the batteries to last fully 10 years like the Protect unit itself does, but 7 years is not too bad I guess. I had the exact same problem as you when 1 of the batteries kept popping out until the middle battery is inserted. And the biggest annoyance was trying to put it back on the ceiling fixture, that was a very frustrating 20 mins! Also like the other commenter I noticed 1 of the batteries was quite warm, though not "hot".
Edit: Well well well, got my multimeter out and only 1 of the batteries (the "warm one") was flat at 1.2v! The other 2 were perfectly fine at 1.73v so I'll be putting them to good use! This looks like a minor design flaw with the *wired* Nest protect, I'm sure 1 of the batteries is sitting too close to the internal voltage converter which is the only part I can think of that would generate any significant heat.

About 2-1/2 years after initial installation, one of my Nest Protect units started to chirp and I got a low battery waring in my Nest app. I went to change the original factory-supplied L91 batteries in this unit (one of my THREE Protect products) and one of the batteries was VERY hot. The other 5 were normal temperature. I had to put the hot battery outside to let it cool off before discarding.
I'm now worried about my other Protect products and will take them out of service today. I see on the forums hundreds of others had similar issues. Ever hear of or experience this yourself?

No, can you please provide more information? I have the exact same model except it's the battery version.

@@BukuiZhao I don't have any other information except I contacted Nest and they sent me a replacement unit. There was no explanation why the batteries got so hot. I check them now more regularly.
