- i know i've said i'm "not a superhero fan" before, but i supposed i should've been more specific: i'm not a "2009-2020 superhero fan". i do adore the original batman franchise, i owned the DVD box set and everything. but i've always felt very out of place within the fandom because unlike everyone else, i actually like joel schumacher's batman & robin. yes, batn*pples and all.

Honestly
let's gather around the campfire and sing our campfire song, our c-a-m-p-f-i-r-e s-o-n-g song
Yeah
I mean did you see the Met Gala? STRUGGLE BUS lol
It's so funny because that's what made 60s batman so iconic
Uma Thurman and Alicia silverstone in this movie were icons of my childhood, along with Sarah Michelle Gellar as daphne
alicia and uma were the best part of this movie 🥺
kefla ツ periodt. Uma just served every-time she was on screen, and Alicia is just so good in everything.
Alicia Silverstone was so underrated in this film.
same
Justice for Alicia Silverstone. Deserved a longer career
The common argument for disliking this movie was the same for the Star Wars prequels--cartoon like, and at times unrealistic. To which I reply: he's dressed like a bat, fighting crime as a vigilante and his arc nemesis is a psychopath, dressed as a clown that NO ONE has caught in decades. Cherry picking realism is foolish. Uma as Ivy, for the tone of the film, was perfect. They tried to do the same for WW2 with Kristin Wiig's character and failed. In my opinion, don't half ass a ridiculous situation like a shy botanist who is murdered, brought to life and is an evil, plant loving seductress. Own it, and Uma did.
I don't like Batman and Robin but my dislike has never had anything to do with Uma or Arnold they did those characters absolute justice for the script they were working with and the tone that was set. I just find it annoying that people think Batman has always been super dark and gritty when there is a looooooooong history of comics that show otherwise. The dark stuff sticks out because its books that are aimed for a more grown audience but Batman has been in some ridiculous comic book stories and anyone who's read anything coming out of the 60s and 70s would realize that (they are such fun off the wall ridiculous stories) also 1966 Batman TV Series is an absolute blast to watch and I think that's what Schumacher was channeling with his movies, like up the camp, up the silly jokes and circumstances and have fun. Do I think it resulted in a good movie? No. But do I hate the efforts? Also no. (and the costume and make up people were amazing, Mr. Freeze's make up is some of my favorite)
Disagree about the Star Wars prequel, people criticize Jar Jar for being cartoonish but he's an overall minor part of the movies. The main criticism is that they are just dull with too much focus on trade policy and flat acting. I would argue if the prequels went full cartoon, they would be better (like the pod racing stuff).
@@marthamott1136 Thank you for replying respectfully, you're awesome. W/ the Star Wars prequel, I was thinking of George Lucas addressing why people couldn't connect with the way it was written (I can see how flat acting could make it harder--Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen were so green when that came out) bc it was meant to be like a graphic comic, along with the weird cut aways. I will re-watch it though after this--I don't remember the trade/economic stuff and now I'm intrigued.
@@marthamott1136 in regards to the criticism of the Star Wars prequels I was an older teen when they first released and yeah, too much trade policy and background contextual setup. I loved the Thrawn trilogy in book form but wanted straight action for a movie at that age. However, as an older adult now it's actually really amazing to see how it set up the whole arc and Revenge in particular. Jar Jar was still brutal though.
Similarly to Batman & Robin, the Star Wars prequels had really uneven acting because some actors played it straight (such as Portman) and others played it whole heartedly (McGregor). I think the best mix was Palpatine though, with cool chilling malice in the first movie and full insane bombast in the third.
Yes yes and Yes.
Uma rules‼️beloveds~💞
Please talk about Clue that movie needs more love. And Lydia's costumes in Beetlejuice. And the costumes in Phantom.
Love Clue
Lydia is such a queen
And the movie speed racer
I’m waiting for a fashion analysis on Clueless, Heathers, and Cadet Kelly.
i want her to do a video on Rebelde way, but the original 2002-03 version!!! Mia's style!
Every interpretation of batman is like fan art you can take it to the dark route or the camp route no version is incorrect because all follow the same rule: bruce wayne protects gotham in a bat suit
And is rich
and has parental issues
You can actually take it in any direction. But doing it and doing it well are two very different things. And this movie does NOT do it well.

Yes, any film adaptation of printed work should be allowed to drift as long as it makes sense but this film doesn't make any sense. Want a funny superhero movie _ go for Shazam, Spiderman and Deadpool etc. Batman franchise meant to be dark. Pre written character's characterization shouldn't be changed but yes _ with time passed as era get changed _character's characterization can be evolved to cope up with time but that also based on the time frame of the movie's story era. If parents don't want their children to look at dark stuff then they shouldn't allow their kids to watch Batman movies.
I just love poison ivy’s outfit in this

As a massive batman reader: thank you! People act like the Adam West batman didn't exist and only expect angsty dark bats when he's always been portrayed differently in a variety of genres.
Finally someone said it! I am SICK of seeing people rolling eyes or burst out laughing at me when I say Batman & Robin is one of my favorite movies from the 90s. Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy is just timeless perfection, such an iconic portrayal of the character 😍👌 Justice for Batman & Robin!
I completely agree. I find Batman a little too serious now for the ridiculousness that is a guy in a tight batsuit.
You have to understand that just because you like something doesn't make it any good. So your favorite movie could be a terrible. And you can hate an excellent made film. And this is a terrible from start to finish. And I am saying as someone who loves this movie. You can't have justice for Batman and Robin when Batman and Robin is terrible.

I have a mix of nostalgia and confusion with this movie but Uma Thurman absolutely kills it and she’s over the top in the best way possible. I’m honestly disappointed that I didn’t see a Poison Ivy homage at the Met Gala when the theme was camp. That would of been perfect.
Well said. I agree with you here. I saw Batman and Robin in theaters when I was 8 years old (which this movie was made for) and as an adult, nostalgia aside, I can appreciate it for its lavish sets, style and camp. It’s a ridiculous movie, but that’s why we love Joel Schumacher. He just went for it and embraced the shallow nature of this kind of film, which becomes endearing because the passion is all over the screen.
The Batman (2022) was a joyless, brooding time. I felt like I needed to double up on my antidepressant after watching it.
What drugs are you on ?? Batman and Robin has the worst acting, bad special effects, and terrible script. Even Joe Schumacher apologizes for making this movie.
BTW.. Batman(2022) Dc’s best live action Batman movie of all time and it’s a fact.
I always loved Batman and Robin, specifically because it WAS so bad! and not even bad, just campy. It is a live action cartoon, Embrace it. Love it.
I find it rare to find someone who likes this movie and this made my day ❤️
Patrick H Wilhelms had a video defending Joel Schumacher's Batman films and as someone who liked Batman Forever and Batman and Robin his videos were a joy to watch. Highly recc if you want to watch more people defending Batman and Robin.
i’ve always had a liking to this movie, so you’re def not alone 😅

That doesn’t mean your liking of the movie is justified
“Batman is gay as hell”
Lmao 🤣 you could not be more right. I’d argue that the 60’s Batman is almost more so
I'm pretty sure Batwoman was introduced in response to the jokes about how sus Batman and Robin were. She was written as a lesbian ever since - queen that she is.
There are longstanding rumors that Aunt Harriet was given a prominent role in the TV show specifically to make the Bruce/Dick relationship seem less questionable. (She wasn't actually invented for the TV show, as some say, but was only in the comics for a couple years as a "replacement" for Alfred who had died but - of course - came back.)

say what u want, but batman and robin was by far one of the most memorable movies i've ever watched just by sheer amount of camp in it. it was enjoyable because it was fun, and it didn't try to hide that.
It’s still horrendous
Fun fact: Clooney says he delibertly played Batman as a closeted gay man in the movie
@Brandon Brooks I mean, he is broody and moody, but he isn’t an edgelord who hates children and spend his nights writing poetry.

Only wish that poison ivy’s power worked on girls 😂😂😂🥵 unfair
I mean, it sort of does... It definitely worked on me 😂
It worked on Harley?
The movie and comics strongly implies it does, actually. But she had to be more appealing to the guys, i guess?
If they swing that way, maybe it does…

This movie was my childhood imagine the shock when I knew it was universally hated lmao. I guess the latinamerican dubbing made it better.
literally same. We had this on vhs and o'm sure ive seen it over 10 times. I couldn't believe people didn't like this movie!
i'm so glad to see a video about this. i was born in 1994 so i very much grew up with this movie. i wore the vhs tape out as a kid and had to be bought a new one, that's how often i used to watch this. i had all the action figures and despite what poison ivy claims, her ones (yes, she had multiple, they knew what the kids wanted) did not come with bane. you had to buy him separately. this movie had such a profound effect on me as a person and i don't think i can rly explain in words how much i love it. if i feel sad, it instantly makes me feel happy like nothing else can. i was so upset when empire originally voted this as the worst film of all time. there's no way this is the worst film, nowhere near it. the worst film of all time is one that's BORING. and to try to call batman and robin boring is an insult worse than any other
This movie was like my favourite when I was a kid. So happy to find someone else who remembers it and likes it!
YESSSS
Me too!! I felt like I was the only one that unirornically loved this movie and for the longest time was too embarrassed to tell anyone 😂
I’ve always loved it!😍
It’s garbage
i watched this wayyy too much as a kid bc of how mesmerizing uma thurman is as poison ivy! i never noticed how alicia silverstone, george clooney and chris o'donnell try to play the roles seriously until now, felt so weird to watch, probably why i liked the villain in the batman franchise so much
I always loved this movie! never understood why it was so hated.
Because it’s garbage and it epitomizes the death of a superhero genre
We were just talking about wanting to see Poison Ivy again on Twitter! I wonder which actresses would be a good pick? Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze would be such a good villain duo, especially for a movie with a climate change message.
2020 really has me thinking those two weren't too bad 🙈
Madeleine Petsch from Riverdale should absolutely play Poison Ivy. She's a natural redhead and has plenty of experience playing ridiculous, dramatic icons. We would absolutely die.
Anya Taylor joy could make a great Ivy.
Or a Supergirl alternatively
Know what? I Like Batman and Robin Movie, i just don't know why many people hate it? And they even made the director and actors apologize for it..
yes same! this is my favourite batman movie, the only one I would watch as a kid xx
Honestly you put into words why I like Batman and Robin. It was so colorful and crazy but mainly campy!
Nope
i love camp, and i have no problem with campy and fun adaptations of batman (in fact i wish directors would see the character as more multi dimensional than just a brooding edgy loner who beats up criminals). my problem with this movie lies in the fact that it completely misunderstands its characters. ex. dick being in his twenties and still robin, the lack of a father-son dynamic between batman and robin (which granted isnt just this movie. most directors miss this as well), poison ivy having implied feelings for mr freeze, and the fact that barbara straight up isn’t herself to the point where she might as well be an entirely different character.
i just want a campy batman film by someone who actually understands the source material, because it is possible
i used to watch this movie a lot during my childhood, it was the only batman movie i had, and i loved it for it's camp until i started to see the hate and I felt ashamed for liking it. I'm so glad I found this video so i can let go of that and maybe watch it again
I miss them campy over the top fun movies, with cartoonish colorful costumes
Me: Uh oh, has ModernGurlz finally gone too far?
Also Me: But is it in fact, not far enough...?
When I watch this film, I watch it as a successor to Adam West’s Batman. It makes it far more enjoyable. But you make a good point about the heroes performances being a lot more stilted because they haven’t adapted to the tone (though the emotional stuff between Bruce and Alfred is a nice bit of pathos within the camp)
Tbh my baby heart couldn't deal with Ivy in this movie, I had a huge crush on the woman
I think homophobia really killed the reviews for it, and there was also a kind of expectation of macho heroes at the time that really didn't help. Which is a pity because camp gay for kids is really my niche

Saaame😩💕✨
Batman StansTM really hate that this campy masterpiece got made
Yet the Watchmen stans cheered when Zack Snyder took all of the colour and political complexity out of one of those rare CAMPY comics that could be considered traditional literary masterpieces.
You can’t say campy movies were masterpieces because it’s not true. This movie is a black eye for Batman franchise
I personally LOVED this movie as a child.... and I still doooo!😀❤
Your integrity
Honestly whoever popularized the idea that reviews should be objective needs to be slapped in the face
I disagree, I think they should be objective.
This video speaks out the truth. Just because it's fun or cartoonish , doesn't mean it's trash. I honestly would love to see live actions, some of em have a tone or aesthetic like the main show or cartoon. We saw how good some movies like Scooby Doo were keeping their aesthetic in the live action and how some of them such as Winx club's fate saga not doing it right with it's unnecessary edgy tone. At least if it is done right (edgy toning) I'm good with it. If not, go with that campy humor like the cartoon.
Stop it😅😅😅😅 you’re don’t get to said that “ just because it’s fun or cartoonish”. Batman and Robin received the negative reception because it is a movie for the toy commercials
tbh i only watched this movie for ivy because she looked gorgeous
honestly its such a fun movie and no less entertaining than batman returns. campy films deserve more respect for how ridiculously charming they are.
Negative reception overwhelmed the positives, you can’t beat it
As a kid who was not traditionally masculine, this was the only Batman movie I liked and introduced me to the entire world of comics. I found the first ones very scary. Uma Therman, Alicia Silverstone, camp and bulging muscles may not relate to the fanboys, but it put Batman in a context I could be interested in.
I absolutely love the costumes from this movie.
Right? I think they deserved an Oscar for the costumes. They were cool as hell.
It’s not even a dignified costumes for Batman and Robin
fun fact! his phantom of the opera is free in full on youtube now!!
Poison ivy was the best part of this film.
Cult/campy classic. Millennials and Gen Z gays stan this film, sexual awakenings were either Chris O'Donnell's Robin, or Uma's Ivy (and she is the best part of this film, even if u dislike it- I'd rec the film simply for people to see her performance.) Love the visuals and aesthetic of all 4 80s/90s Batman films, not flawless but still SO much better in terms of style than the Nolan era, which felt ashamed of it's comic roots and too grounded (boring), no doubt another WB response to their decision to axe out Burton, and then hire Schumacher- and THEN axe him out and reboot again. Circle repeats, with Snyder and Matt Reeves...clearly this is a studio issue.
It would make my life if Snyder never touched anything again. He is always working with source material that he is *ashamed* of or doesn't understand.
@@fruitygarlic3601 snyder is a mixed bag. Some of his visuals are beautiful and then also?...sometimes too dark and u can't see anything. His films in the DC world haven't been greatly written but his direction imo wasn't the problem. But I understand he often goes too literal and doesn't take a subtle approach and misunderstands certain comics

THANK YOU FOR DEFENDING THIS MOVIE! I absolutely love Batman & Robin! It's an absolute blast to watch.

God Nicole Kidman was such a bombshell in that movie
I miss campy colorful cinema
It’s not even a quality material
While I respect your opinion, I feel it's really unfair to say that comic book fans don't like this movie because they don't understand camp or because the movie is "too gay". The classic noir detective Batman is definitely loved by fans but there have been many camp-y interpretations of Batman that fans adore, like the Adam West Batman or more recently the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold. In fact, the much loved Tim Burton Batman movies are also rightly considered to be camp and even Batman Forever, again very camp-y, is appreciated by a lot of fans, me included. Jim Carrey in my opinion was great and it's okay that he steals the show because Batman's villains have the tendency to do that every now and then because they're so interesting. That's why Batman is said to have the best villains, I mean this happened in The Dark Knight with Joker, which is still the best comic book movie according to many comic book movie fans. IMO Batman & Robin is just camp done wrong and George Clooney doesn't work as Batman. It's okay to like things other people don't like and I think it's great that you like Batman & Robin, a lot of people do, but it's not okay to assume it's because of toxic masculinity or because people didn't get the humour and need a laugh track to get a joke
Well said
That and the fact that the film still tried to be serious with the Alfred plotline and Mr Freezes tragic backstory wich at least for me resultet in tonal whiplash.
You're right, most of us love the 66 tv show and can even enjoy Forever for what it is but B&R it just awful. Being a comedy, being camp doesn't automatically make it good. There's being a bit silly and then there's just being dumb (note TDKR is a serious film and that also sucked) B&R is just dumb, which is shame because there was a few moments it shined. Plus George just looked hilarious in that costume.. so it was always doomed.
I actually surprised to find people hate this movie. I think it's very clear the movie was made as something fun, wild amd cacthy. No way to be compared as Superheroes nowadays movies.
Do you realize how insane you sound right now ? Batman and Robin can be a guilty pressure, but the negative reception is justified.
@@laquentinpotts9272 Well this movie was from the 90's. Where Superheroes movies basically are just like literally comic brought to life and many people still think it's childish.
This is the same thing for Halle Barry's Catwoman. That film kicked-ass, but of course, the hyper-masculine fandom shred it to pieces.
I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece but I do enjoy this movie. I think people should stop comparing this to dark gritty things like the Frank miller comics and just compare it to silliness like the super friends.
I enjoy Schumacher's work too so I agree.
How??
I think that the problem of the movie is its timing. Yes, it's an homage to the campy early days of the Bat but it came directly after the gothic style of the Burton movies.
And at the time where batman the animated series was at the peak of its popularity, turning the Batman mythos into a noir deep tragedy.
So what should have been a clever homage to the silver age, was instead viewed as a walking anachronism
This movie was my childhood! I love it🥺🥰😆
Idk how I missed this for two months !!!! Needless to say Lego Batman best movie, best outfits. Alfred in the 60s fit, iconic!!
This video right here is literally why i loved WW84 so much. while not entirely campy and cartoonish, the film is heavily inspired by this style of ridiculousness. i guess with the first film being super intense and dark, people werent interested in it :/ its a shame
This was one of my favorite Batman movies
How??
Most movies have comic relief to keep them from getting too heavy. B&R has dramatic scenes to relieve you from the camp.
I always liked this movie idk what is everyones problem is yes the niple costumes were weird but besides that i thought it was good.
Yaaaaaaas, I agree with you, 100%
This is my favorite batman movie and I regret nothing

Poison Ivy's costumes were awesome.
The Schumacher movies are a serious guilty pleasure
This is actually a semi guilty pleasure of mine. Although I think the backlash is due to this being a somewhat continuation of the Tim Burton movies and that through everybody off their game. If they just rebooted the franchise and separated them from the Tim Burton movies I think people would not be as hostile
I agree with you in every point. It needed to be said and it was said!
Just stop it😅😅😅
I loved this movie as a kid and I still watch to this day. I didn’t even know there was backlash until I kept seeing it mentioned in videos on the internet.
I remember the old superheroes movie marathon they made in my country every Saturday afternoon and this movie was the one I always enjoyed the most. Uma Thurman in this movie is iconic!
This movie was funny, campy and gay as hell. Maybe that's why I liked it the most than the other Batman films of its time.
Basically grew up wanting to be as clever, confident, and strong as Poison Ivy was, rather than B&R themselves.
Same!! I remember rewatching way too much haha, and believe it deserves a style analysis, Uma's looks alone 🤤
A friend of mine told me to look at it this way; the Schumacher films are in universe movies made about Burton's Batman. Almost like superhero movies meeting a biopic. They're movies about Batman in Gotham's universe. I love all the films, but this perspective makes me appreciate the Schumacher films for more than the camp and ridiculousness they can have.
Out of all the Batman films I’ve watched this one the most it’s so great hahaha
Poison Ivy is the best tbh
This has and will always be my favourite batman movie. And I’m so sick of people giving me shit for it!!
I still love this movie, the camp is all the fun plus the costumes 🙌
Nope
This is a good defense of a movie. I do take umbrage with the comparison with Superman as I think he can also be relatable. While he is a super powered alien, he was raised by two working class parents and is trying to be a good person.
It's hard to relate to a billionaire, some of us relate to Superman because we feel like an alien/outsider like he was.
Batman has been around for some decades of course each person will have different interpretaions for him, and that what makes the universe so rich and interesting, because everyone can find something that will suit their taste. My favorite view of him is that Bruce is a very sleep deprived dad trying to manage his multiple children and Gotham at the same time.
Batman and Robin is my favorite Batman movie.
You can dislike the movie but you CAN NOT dislike Ivy that must be a crime or something
Uma is the best possible Ivy and I live for it. Her costumes and character - ugh, iconic.
To make a long story short: The only reason Batman fans hate this movie so much is because he kinda plays the supporting role in his own movie. Simple because Poison Ivy TOTALLY steals thes show and there is no debate about it. This is the "Poison Ivy movie," so most fans act dumb and claim that the movie is the worst thing ever made. Even WB acts like this. This movie is the reason Ivy haven't debuted in the DCEU. They know once she arrives, she will outshine everyone else and, of course, they don't want that.
She wasn't outshining any one, she was over the top there is a huge difference between the two things, do you really consider her acting in the movie to be any good? She was so bad her portrayal of the character is embarrassing actually
I used to get roasted for loving this movie. Thank you for recognizing its campy beauty!
So much shade thrown at fan boys...I’m here for it🤣
As a Batman fan, I think the movie was channeling the characters in the 90s cartoon. Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze outfits were very similar to the ones in the series. What I didn't like about the movie was that it was marketed as a continuation of the other 3. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin had little in common with the first 2 and yet, they were trying to convince us they were all part of the same family. Nop, B&R is the youngest sibling who gets to stay up until late and gets to study whatever it wants, while the older siblings had to follow rules and make mamma and pappa proud.
This is kind of my guilty pleasure movie

Girl when she said that people hated this movie because it was incredibly gay I could not agree more. Especially with them being uncomfortable with the men being in such explicitly detailed costumes but had no problem with the women being objectified. This reminds of the saying that straight men are uncomfortable around gay men because they are afraid of being objectified the way they do to women.
I am happy I am not the only one who likes this movie. Thank you so much.
It’s better than Christopher Nolan’s Batman ? If it’s yes, then you had bad taste.
Would you ever make a video about the costumes in Clue? I think they’re amazing!

Honestly, i was never into DC movies. Ive been getting into them recently, so i think this video will help :)
Superman the movie with Christopher Reeves is a delight, and 1989 Batman is one of my absolute favorites. The other 3 90s Batman movies are entertaining and worth a watch for sure. Current DC films...outside of Wonder Woman...I could take em or leave em honestly.
Yes, absolutely see the 1978 Superman, if you haven't. It's still delightful. The sequels not so much. They just get worse and sillier as they go on, although 4 is kind of a camp classic if you're a bad movie fan.
