      I tend to score Eartha as the #1 Catwoman, her immersion into the role made it the perfect balance of threat, intelligence and ability that this villain required. No rocks being tossed at Pfeiffer or Hathaway but neither one of them had their threat level up to par when it comes to facing Batman.

    The relationship between Batman/Catwoman 2022 made sense to me. They're both deeply traumatized, lonely people and the movie makes it clear the effect it has on their interactions with others. They're surviving on autopilot fueled by a rage that's emotionally, socially stunted them. So naturally their relationship wouldn't be a "healthy" "romantic" one full of deep chemistry and whitty banter but the healthier version of an unhealthy thing because it's all they're currently capable of emotionally.

      I doesnt make sense to me. Just because they are traumatized or something doesnt mean they have chemistry on each other and would make them be attracted to each other. Especially that Batman isnt lonely but only socially awkward and Catwoman is the only lonely character makes the romance more unnatural. To me Catwoman is only trying to manipulate Batman to help her by her sex appeal and is not really attracted to him, but if they do plan to make a sequel to the film and they would include Catwoman again i hope they would actually put a reasonable reason on why she really is attracted to Batman.

Before seeing it, I was expecting a passionate sexual whirlwind romance. After seeing it, I understand that everyone in this new version of Gotham is only just getting started. I'm not black, but Halle Berry's Catwoman still has a special place in my heart for fairly similar reasons, because she got a super-powered/animalistic/heroic/lead-character storyline typically given to male characters-and I think she was actually my personal introduction to the Catwoman character in general as a young early-teens-aged girl too. I became obsessed with seeing just about every other iteration of the character I could get my hands on after that, but Halle Berry's version is still first in my heart.
      (I also _really_ don't understand, personally, the current modern take like being sexual and being objectified are inherently the same issue. You can absolutely be sexy &/or sexual without merely being objectified. ..But maybe that's just me.)

      @KIJO2696 2 года назад +9

      @@jaginaiaelectrizs6341 I agree, she was also my first live action introduction to cat woman and I really liked that she had supernatural animalistic powers. With the sexy=objectification thing i think part of the issue is that when writers (especially male writers) create a sexy female character she's often only allowed to be sexy and is deprived of depth and complexity which seems to make it easier for the audience to only see her as a sex symbol

    • @jaginaiaelectrizs6341
      @jaginaiaelectrizs6341 2 года назад +3

      @@KIJO2696 As a little kid I pretty much used to only read or watch stories IF there were animals in them, because I'm an avid animal lover and I just found animals way more interesting to me than human-people, but stories where the animal characters were anthropomorphized a bit or where the human people were a little bit animalistic[ like Halle Berry's Catwoman] really helped me gradually start to realize and come to appreciate a lot more as I grew up that human beings could be interesting too. (And it was so rare to see that kind of a character not be a guy! Outside of books, I think it's still more rare than it should be, honestly.) Lol She was powerful, she was beautiful, and she started off basically as a nobody who just finds her way to really come into her own and become an individual somebody(with a little supernatural help - kind of as if the supernatural or whatever saw what was already special in her even when everyone else overlooked or underestimated it) and she learns to stick up for herself and fight to get justice like she deserves when people wrong her in ways that shouldn't happen; I really loved it.
      True enough about the sexy=objectification thing, though-I suppose it often can/does. I guess I was just trying to say, I think sometimes it feels like people think of it as somehow making a character automatically less 3-dimensional JUST because they ARE sexy/sexual[ or such] even when that character isn't actually all that flat or shallow or 2-dimensional of a character or whatever overall, and I just personally find that kinda sad...like, you should be allowed to be a sexy/sexual/ person or character AND _STILL_ be seen as also being a deep or complex or layered character at the same time too. (If that makes sense?) Like, I don't really remember feeling personally as if "sexy" was literally *ALL* there was to Halle Berry's Catwoman myself, even though she was also obviously very very sexy too[ and looking back on it now in some of those clips shown in this video especially perhaps it was accentuated unnecessarily much sometimes] .. but maybe that was just me?? (idk) 😅🤔🤷‍♀️ Lol ((I mean, perhaps it helped me a lot that I didn't really entirely care yet if people were sexy or not, so I kinda just mostly ignored that aspect anyhow .. so maybe I just only saw everything else about the story & character instead without even really thinking about how sexy it was or wasn't whatsoever, myself, until later on.😹 .. I dunno. 😁 🤣🤣))

    while I hated that they kept calling Selina’s girlfriend her “friend”, I disagree about removing the romance. actually, I was very impressed by Robert’s acting in the first moment he sees Selina in the club - tho he plays it off as her being useful to his investigation, I found his look at her was clearly one of lust, and interest. he is always unsettled by her. and it shows to me that Bruce is young, and that he craves human contact and being able to just be with someone he likes. it also makes his choice to stay at the end more powerful, because he clearly *wants* Selina, but not enough to abandon his vision for Gotham

It was written to be awkward, but anyone with common sense could see how well Robert played the lust in his eyes when he was around Zoe. It's a slow burn. Same thing with Bridgerton 2, many karens thought the couple didn't have chemistry but the plot was an enemies to lovers narrative that was written.

    Michelle Pfieffer is the obvious most interesting one. With the most original and striking costume. I like every choice and outfit from that movie. Her voice, her transformation, I like her as Selina pre and post resurrection and the chemistry was believable
    Halle deserved better, I hated the brasierre with ripped up pants look and the headpiece. Her initial Catwoman outfit with the domino mask and tight leather body covering outfit looked great, changing it to that mess was a downgrade and Patience Phillips being TOO catlike was a weird choice with her eating catfood out of a tin, licking herself, eyeing fish like a weirdo. and sniffing on a catnip toy... I mean Michelle Pfieffer's Selina didn't run around doing that silly crap, they should have dialed it back, but the movie is a guilty pleasure watch cause it is weirdly entertaining.
    I think Julie Newmar deserves more credit, she had great comedic timing and line delivery that made her rendition really work. I liked the reparte she and Batman had best of the 60s Catwomen.
    That being said Eartha had the most attention-grabbing presence and the best voice, it's like she was made for the role and her scenery chewing is the best and perfect for the campy fun of the 60s show.
    Zoe Kravitz in The Batman felt more like a plot device in terms of her role in the movie since her presence was more needed so Batman could solve the mystery in ways he wouldn't have been able to without the convenience of her being connected to Penguin and Falcone. Independent of her ties to them we have nothing really about her noteworthy outside of being a little snarky. The mask was ugly I kept hoping she'd pull together a good mask.
    Anne Hathaway is great, I wish she had the bullwhip though, and her outfits in the film were all perfection and timeless. You can tell that Nolan was inspired by the 60s show and Julie Newmar with the domino mask, cat ears, brunette hair color, and high heels.

    • @WhistleMeThis

      I love the airport outfit and the way she walks and acts wealthy in it even though we know that she’s secretly dirt poor. The police are looking for Selina Kyle, a poor criminal trying to escape from the airport. Therefore she tries to make it appear that she’s a pampered lady in expensive clothing, even though she just came from her run-down apartment in the rough part of the city. The grifter/con artist aspect of the character is best explored in The Dark Knight Rises. They ignored this part of Catwoman in Batman Returns. They somewhat attempted it in The Batman by regrettably putting Zoe Kravitz in colorful Party City wigs in a club setting where she doesn’t even need to be disguised.

    Not very fair to Zoe Krawitz's Catwoman, I have to say. Her clothes (leather corset and leather pants) are a nod towards her comic counterpart in Batman Year one by Frank Miller; her Catwoman costume is practical and, thank god, she has a comfy and practical low heel boot; she's acrobatic and her fighting style is very cat-like + it's perfect for her small stature. Also, they ARE meant to be awkward in their romance - she's trying and failing to charm him because he's socially awkward; they're both attracted to each other, but neither is 100% sure what the other is all about, so they don't know what to do . Also also, something you might not know - when cats are threatened, they try to kick with their hind paws as their hind legs are their most powerful body part. You see Zoe's Selina do just that. Her fighting style comprises of low, spin and high kicks, and tactical sambo-like takedowns which are perfect for someone of a smaller stature. In comparison, Bruce Wayne/Batman in the movie is more like a tank, facing opponents straight on with punches, using his weight to the fullest. So no, her character isn't underdeveloped, it's in the smaller details. She did great!

    • @yenzi930
      @yenzi930 2 года назад +44

      Thank you! People seem to miss the fact that this version of batman is supposed to be a grounded take on him rather than the male power fantasy we are used to seeing
      If a millionaire who saw his parents get shot infront of his eyes were swinging around in a bat costume beating people up against the law in the name of vengeance, ofc people would think he’s mentally unhealthy and this movie shows that perfectly!
      It exposed Gotham as this a grim city where the citizens have been so twisted and abused by corrupted higher-ups that actual love seems impossible instead of just a dark Pinterest aesthetic (not that there’s anything wrong with that Tim Burton, it’s just a different approach)
      Edit: ALSO What makes their relationship special is that they both give eachother something the other isn’t used to
      Cat woman: a man who won’t immediately fall for her charm
      Batman: vulnerability form someone equally as strong (and maybe damaged)
      ANOTHER EDIT OOPS: also the sock mask thing pays homage to her burglar-ness and isn’t meant to be a disguise, just to hide her face while doing crime
      I’ve seen people say the mask covering only half her face was only to sexualise her even more but she’s CATWOMAN, she’s meant to be hot (if u had a jawline like Zoe it’d also be a crime to hide it) + her entire head being hidden in black would hinder acting and she’d blend in to the darkness of Gotham too easily

    For me, Michelle Pfeiffer is the best Catwoman because Batman Returns is one of my favorite movies of all time. Eartha Kitt’s Catwoman is the most classic and iconic, but Michelle brought so much to Catwoman. She brought an element of Lovecraftian horror to the character that I don’t think was ever considered before: the idea of Catwoman being part of the living dead. When her Selina Kyle was murdered it was like something completely different took agency of that body and brought it back. Michelle captured that so perfectly! Her performance was a true cinematic roller coaster: she was powerful, sexy, hilarious and downright scary in some scenes.
    Her Selina before death was this innocent little shut-in who let men walk all over her and let her down. When she was murdered by Max Shreck and came back as Catwoman, she was a true force to be reckoned with. Completely unstoppable until she had her revenge.
    But there was also a fragility and childlike nature underneath all that pain and anger. Her Selina just wanted respect and love, but she never got that in life. So as Catwoman, a living dead woman, she made sure her journey wasn’t over until she had made those who wronged her pay.

    I think having a one-sided attraction on The Batman (2022) would've worked way better, and it seemed that the movie was heading that way, with Bruce being a barely functional person falling for Selina, who at first wasn't even interested on him. It would've led to a pretty interesting exploration on Batman's loneliness, vulnerability and kind of clinginess on someone who was clearly the victim, but was getting herself in danger more and more, kinda like a deconstruction on the superhero damsel trope and why the protag falls for her

  • @longvo4714

    People expect too much about the relationship between Selina and Batman in the new movie. They both are young, broken, and lonely, so it’s obvious that the interaction was awkward. And I would not call it a “romance”, they just have strong feelings for each other. Again, both are young and lonely, barely have relationships with peers. Selina is impressed by Batman as he is different than most of men in Gotham, and she also appreciate Batman’s goodness. Batman can see the good in Selina, and he hopes that she would change. I know many women like this in real life, and I was not surprised when she gaves him kisses. Some people have been through a lot, so they show appreciation differently. And one more thing: Awkward people DO exist! As an awkward person myself, i hated myself and the awkward interactions that I have with people, including the person I love. But after watching this movie, I truly appreciate how they were depicted; it’s inspirational and I can see myself in it.

      It is the most naturalistic mainstream movie depiction of the messy awkwardness of a blossoming yet undefined relationship with some sort of intimate tension between both characters - IN YEARS! - and to have it take place inside a comic-book super-hero movie franchise (of all settings thinkable) says a lot about the current state of Hollywood.

    (I never really leave comments but it was honestly weighing on my mind lol) in defense of Kravitz-Catwoman: The Wigs. I don't think the use of wigs was an aspect of non self-assurance/escape but I felt, as a POC, I felt it was black-girl superpower, which I don't think we've really seen yet as an audience. Being able to blend, shift and change. I think its also a significant part to note that she only really wears wigs when she's at the club: where she's trying to deceive & score revenge, she's playing a character. It's when she's in cat-burgeler mode/working with Batman does she reveal her natural hair -- which I can't help but read into as a POC as a significant nod to trust.
    You can probably hear my bias lol but just wanted to share this lil black girl's opinion/love for this film lol. Love these essays, thanks for making them!

      @@witchplease9695 This is a really fair point: melanin rich women aren't cast enough in these roles, and that loss of representation can be so harmful. i think it's equally unhealthy to validate or invalidate someone's blackness; though it's fair you don't identify with Kravitz. Light skin allies have a duty to use their privileges where they can, but to pick and choose who is and isn't black enough for you (biracial, "white-passing," afro-latinx) I don't feel is the best use of power. That opens the door to discredit/invalidate the voices & experiences of community members like President Barrack Obama, Zendaya, Tracee Ellis Ross to name a few.
      ALL of this to say, yes, I agree with you, there needs to be greater casting of black women (other than/in addition to light skinned), I just don't want to discredit anyone's black experience, whether they look like me or not.

      I see what you mean @@material-cheshirekhatter2413. The point of my original comment was: the use of wigs shouldn't necessarily be seen as an aspect of escapism but a mode of expression/power/agency for the wearer. Experienced most commonly in my own, personal specific scope: black women. A white author may not see the significance of a wig the same way we do. And I don't want that scene or act of power to be misread and therefore stolen, that was the hope of my original comment.
      Also I have to reiterate again, Biracial-black people are still black people; They are part of the beautiful spectrum of color and rich diaspora we share as a community. I have No interest in validating or invalidating anyone's blackness (people like Vice President Kamala Harris, Saweetie, H.E.R., Yara Shahidi, Jordan Peele to name a few more). Lets agree, perhaps we are interested in seeing a darker, richer melanin actor take on this role, as we've already seen Eartha Kitt & Halle Berry. Yes, let's encourage that, but let's not discourage any black person's (whether "full" or "half" / light or dark) black experience or black hair experience. That is also my hope

    Ranking Lara Croft outfits-as-character-expression would be a neat video to me, if I might make the request. Or ranking the Assassin's Creed outfits, as both character and period expressions. Maybe Final Fantasy protagonists?
    Something with a longrunning popular videogame series as premise, at least, since those characters also have a lot to expressively imply in terms of what players will be expected to do, how it'll feel to play. And having either those extremely iconic mascotte looks, or extremely pragmatic 'realistic simulation' looks is also an interesting aspect of videogame fashion, that seems somewhat specific to that medium.
    Thanks for this video anyways!

    halle's version of catwoman stays my favorite of all time because it's my childhood movie, and i've seen it a lot like a lot a lot, and to me most people are simply not interested in having another idea of the movie. even though the plot is not the best plot ever (and that's the case for a lot of superhero movies that are considered great), no one seems to actually be interested in the fact that this is the only catwoman movie where cats are actually important characters, their attitude and their history. i loved that from the very begining we see a lot of catwomen and cat history through time, i also loved the scenes with the cat lady who explains to her what is happening. in terms of character and fashion she also stays my favorite, everytime i watch this movie i get a boost of confidence, and seeing a biracial black woman like her playing two superheroes at that time was like amazing to me. i also don't agree with the character of sharon stone. in the movie she clearly is mad at her husband and not at other women, she doesn't mock her friend who is always bright and funny about her sexuality, her character is cold and mean yes but we do see that she is also a victim
    i didn't buy rob an zoeromance in the movie either lmao seemed like an after thought especially the kiss that was kinda cringe
