  • there's a very specific type of movie that we don't see much of anymore but back in the 90s and 2000s they were EVERYWHERE. the genre, which we've coined "kinder camp", featured outlandish set design and satirical humor centered around childish stories that brought about a sense of nostalgia. distinct in visuals and tone, these movies were considered critical failures at the time but are looked upon with fondness today. could we bring back kinder camp?

    Hollywood really doesn't know how to read a room. We are in the middle of a pandemic , I feel like most people don't want to see a depressing dark edgy retellings of old TV and films from our childhood . I feel we need more happy go lucky escapism.

      Agreed. I’m so tired of serious and dark tv and movies. My 3 favorite movies at the moment: Crazy Rich Asians, Thor Ragnorak and The Mitchell’s vs the Machines. All three of these movies are funny and have a lot of Kinder Camp elements. We need more films and shows like them.

      Last year around the same time in December, I watched Fat Man. It's not Kinder Camp, but it is defiantly tongue-and-cheek. Santa is a rugged stressed working man who's been giving presents all his life but is sick of all the naughtiness in the world, especially by adults. The one thing that keeps him going is the kindness and selflessness of innocent children who still believe in him, and those who were nice who have grown up. After he gives a rich and privileged child coal for Christmas, the brat hires a hitman to assassinate the "fat man." I highly recommend it. It was the perfect holiday movie for 2020, and arguably still is for 2021. I guess if a movie or series "acts serious" but is self aware that it's story is goofy, it can commentate on current society problems but still be a fun time. imo it does not top Jim Carry Grinch and Will Ferrell Elf still. Those are my favorite holiday movies still.

    I think that Kinder Camp is superior to the darker media that is prevalent now, because they take the essence of the media that they base the film/show off of, and add new things to it that don't at all seem out of place with the original source material, where as most darker interpretations of nostalgic media, decide to go against almost everything that the original media was famous for.

    • @casir.7407
      @casir.7407 2 года назад +74

      yes, very much so!!!! what they mostly did was to make actual satire and jokes (whether or not they were funny is another issue) regarding the contrast of the heightened exaggerated world of fiction with the real life counterparts. nowadays something that could have been silly and ridiculous in the vein of these movies, like riverdale or sabrina, has to go through these filters of cynicism, edginess, fake wokeness (if something hasnt changed is the lack of representation in these movies and shows, with only very few advances in portrayals of queer characters) and a sort of self-awareness that relies more on poking fun at the source material, presenting itself as smarter and wittier, than meeting it where it stood.

      yes but when the market got oversaturated and people got sick of them Hollywood stopped making those types of movies. Unfortunately all of the terrible remakes are here to stay, PERMANENTLY this time. Because Hollywood isn't making movies for Americans anymore. They don't care if Americans and critics hare their movies and say their stories are terrible that movies are all just rehashes and special effects. They don't care if not a single person in America goes to see their movie. Because they're making all of their money in China and overseas now. And they making HUGE amounts of money. They're going to keep remaking terrible superhero movies with no story and terrible dialogue because people overseas are going to watch them and love them because of the special effects alone. And they are going to make billions and billions of dollars off of those low effort formulaic movies. And that's the problem we now have. It doesn't matter if every single person in America stopped watching anything Hollywood put out. Hollywood would still continue to put out the same s*** because it's low effort and there's a very high reward overseas. And until these countries start making their own movies for their own audiences Hollywood will never make movies for Americans again.

    • @everuby1438
      @everuby1438 2 года назад +9

      @@WhitneyDahlin I feel like you're giving the average American too much credit for being discerning movie viewers... Hollywood has always been geared towards American interests and humour - just look at how many movies nowadays are still set in the US with American actors, directors, producers, and crews. The "terrible superhero movies" you're talking about aren't just popular outside the US. And I can assure you there are movie viewers not from the US who are looking for more than flashy special effects.

    • @Pandazillaaa
      @Pandazillaaa 20 дней назад

      @@WhitneyDahlin that's racist. Your basically saying that people in places like China have no sense of movie quality and are too dumb or desperate to care about actual plots outside of special affects and only watch things because they can and don't care how dumb the movie is when in reality most of the movies your talking about aren't just popular overseas and are usually liked by atleast a vast minority that isn't you. And also most really low quality movies if you actually bother to do research outside of your own obvious racism or atleast bias you'd actually realize aren't that popular overseas anyways and if they are it's usually because surprise surprise people actually have unique tastes other than you.

      On the flip side of that, while I think that Enchanted and Tangled are fantastic camp movies, most contemporary disney movies with meta jokes nearly always have me groaning. @@khadijahmalone3034 I'm playing a bit fast and loose with the definition of camp but I always felt Tangled was a good mix of sincerity (and naivete from Rapunzel) and ironic, self-aware humour. On top of that you just have the general stylised over the topness that is Disney. It's definitely a different breed of camp to Mommy Dearest or like, The Rocky Horror Picture show tho.

      @Erwin Lii I honestly like Susan Sarandon's character. And to me, it makes more sense that she encompasses all of the typical villain traits. After all, unlike the Andalasian characters who spent time in New York for most of the plot and developed beyond their stereotypes, she only appeared in New York during the ball scene. She barely had the time for character development.

      She talked about how some aspects of why the genre was so popular is because of contrast in accepted values from the time of the original material, to the time when the genre was released. Like your point on Shaggy being a stoner, I read that as she was literally talking about the dichotomy between how Shaggy was perceived in the 60s and the 2000s. She may not have said it outrightly “that it’s because of the irony,” but at least thoroughly analyze her essay before saying she left giant points out, when you may have not made the connection between what she was saying, and your understanding of the topic. Sure, I was frightened of the Cat in the Hat movie due to a dream I had when I was four. And sure, I always feared Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I think nowadays, we only want to see what the critics want to see.
    Alot of these movies weren't liked by the critics, but by the audience because we either remembered the sources and enjoyed how it was interpreted, or because we just enjoyed the new adaptation. I just miss this part of my childhood the most.

    Not completely on topic but I adore the costume design and makeup of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, It’s so campy and gorgeous. That movie is the reason I want to go into fashion design. Also some of the best KinderCamp movies are absolutely the live action “Scooby Doo” and “The Addams Family Values” (along with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”) all of those were incredible and I will never forget how much I loved the live action “Scooby Doo” the first time I watched it, and it still holds up 😩

    The number of people who think I'm being funny when I say the action Scooby-Doo is my favourite movie. I think it is the best Cartoon-live action adaption I can think of besides the Addams Family. It's camp, funny and I think the cartoonish costumes of the gang perfectly fit the aesthetic of the early 2000s. For a very 2000s movie based on a 60's show, it is bizarrely timeless.

    I think one aspect of Kindercamp is DVD sales. They’re good turn off your brain movies and engaging rewatch experience. With the largely streaming landscape the emphasis is on initial theatrical box office revenue to make up production. Many Kindercamp movies have strong dvd released or annual season (Addams family at Halloween, Grinch at Christmas and I’d argue live action Scooby-doo in summer). The comeback could definitely happen but it’ll still be difficult to convince executives when no award buzz is going to be around the movie as is almost guaranteed for the genre.

    I love, love, loved the Scooby-Doo adaptations. Daphne’s outfits in that movie were SO KILLER and the whole set was so colorful and aesthetically pleasing it actually gave you scooby doo vibes and made you feel like you were in their world. The bright costumes and the dark plot made a perfect combination. AAll of the characters were true to themselves, (even their voices were accurate). Scooby doo is so underrated I think. if more shows were adapted like that and not like the ones we see now a days, I’d actually consider watching more live action adaptations.

    I think it also might be quite telling that squid game was this big of a hit, with its over the top bright aesthetics paired with an incredibly dark narrative and criticism of actual society. while it’s far away from actual kinder camp, and also still way darker than it, maybe hollywood execs should take note of its success and where that came from.

It's meant as an allegory but the things the kids go through are terrifying to think about in a real world sense, and Wonka is very casual about them happening in the story. The thing I'm most concerned about is that it's going to be a musical, I can't think of anything that's quite like it as a musical.

    As someone who was a kid during the kinder camp era: reflecting back on it, the most enjoyable aspect about these movies was that they were literally "cartoon universe but make it live action". Nowadays, all these takes on older media must be "modernized" and for some reason that means that everything is turned into an everyday, common alternative, with a dark filter slapped on top. Magical realm with it's own technology, architecture and customs? (Winx) Turn it into a boring old college, where everyone is dressed the same way we do. Takes the excitement right out of entering this fictional universe through the live action movie. In The Flintstones, everything was built to LOOK like the cartoon. As a kid, it made me wonder about actually living there.
    But I'm guessing all the sets and costuming made to look like the cartoon weren't cheap, and that's what most of these remakes are going for: the cheapest, most effortless way of banking on former-kids-now-young adults' nostalgia.
    My personal opinion is that more remakes could potentially work now if they committed to recreating the fictional universe as it is in the original work. With the current state of the world, it'd be the fix of escapism and nostalgia most of us are looking for.

      A lot of these movies fit more into the Family Movie category than the Kids Movie category. We've sort of lost that distinction now, as most movies and shows from today are made to cater purely towards kids or purely towards adults with little to no overlap. Before the late 2000s, family movies were huge. Think "Mrs. Doubtfire" or "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" or even "National Lampoon." A lot of these films were entertaining for both adults and children, with jokes and visuals that appealed to both. They were just risque enough to add extra flavor but clean enough for kids to watch without upsetting parents. Kinder Camp seems to be another form of the classic family movie, but just takes nostalgia into play.

    YES. I was just thinking recently how many of my favorite older movies were just different I couldn’t put my finger on how exactly but kinder camp describes it PERFECTLY. They have such good rewatch ability.

    Big fan of this dynamic:
    Critics: This is trash.
    Audience: Yes it is 💖💖 💖

    I feel like the 90s kinder camp movies are a true determiner of GenX type media: cozy, laced with sarcasm, has subtle dark humor. Whereas the edgy / boring content we see in remakes today is perhaps made to serve the older millennials- who are fond of their action movies with heroism, with unnecessary and often derivative plot twists included. GenX doesn't need plot twists- they have enough cynicism embedded into their daily monologue.
