There is some is some really good stuff in B&R. I love the scene where Bruce comes to visit Alfred after he has become bedridden due to his illness. The way Clooney & Gough play that scene is beautiful. I do not know why it is not respected more it really is one of the best Alfred and Bruce moments in any Batman film. The way Bruce says "I love you old man" is just so heartfelt and genuine.
Gosh this is the first Batman & Robin commentary video I've seen that actually SAYS something. It doesn't just do the easy "it's horrible let's make fun of it". Nicely done!
I blame the fact it was affected by studio and corporate interference. Still, had it not been for Batman and Robin, it wouldn't have pushed WB to get Christopher Nolan to produce Batman Begins
Imagine a world where Schumacher made Batman Triumphant and none of Nolan's boring fake Batman stuff ever happened. My god, just imagine how better off humanity would have been without Mr. Hockey Pads huffing down air and fighting like a 90-year-old at a bingo hall.
@JDoe-gf5oz i agree with you 100% and don't forget Bale's stupid cancer voice the Nolan trilogy is overrated as hell and boring. Its basically batman fighting in Chicago
As kids my niece and nephew mocked Nolan Batman's pre-Hall's Cough Drops voice. And my nephew said Bane sounded like Alfred on uppers rather than like the latin American strongman he is supposed to be.
I was about 15 when it came out. It bugged me at the time that they couldn't take the source material as seriously as TAS did. But now I just see it as a fun movie that is a part of Batman's history. Also the B&R logo is pretty amazing.
I remember watching it on VHS as a kid so I don't have any memory seeing it in theathers (mainly because I was born a couple years later). It's an interesting experince going back to after all these years, it's still flawed yes but it's a movie that's best enjoyed with friends to see reactions out of imo. And yea the Logo with the red and black is so bold and dynamic imo
Saw it twice in cinema I hate that it didn't even resemble the comics, but then not many superhero movies do I put it in the so bad it's good category, like 60s batman, and I love freezes ice puns😂"everybody chill"
Did the exact same thing but with the Batman Returns vhs tape i wore the hell out of that tape to the point that it stopped working lol i was obsessed with that movie
@JDoe-gf5oz lol yeah the next upgrade for me for Batman Returns was the dvd in the 2000s when i got a ps2. Since my vhs copy from the early 90s was just wore out to the point its just blurry and static lol
Gotham's gigantism with all these disproportionate statues on the buildings is done very well. I am surprised that the author of the channel did not mention it.
I enjoy so many of your videos. I have watched almost all of them now, and they are so full of interesting facts for any Batman fan or anyone else for that matter. As for Batman & Robin, I was not happy with it when it came out, but I still got all the cards and articles in magazines and books, ( I have a collection of binders with cards etc...) and I would always say to naysayers, "I am a Batman fan! I will always collect all things Batman!" Now, as an older fan with more movies to enjoy, this one just becomes another episode of a larger story. I find many things I like about it. Thanks for taking the time to share so much with us about these movies!
For real tho, as a toy commercial, Batman & Robin succeeds so well that even now watching this as a grown ass man it makes me want run out to Toys-R-Us to get the Batman costume variants and a Mr Freeze action figure.
Even if Batman and Robin was disastrous, I can't actually blame Schumacher for the film at all. He and his crew were forced to fulfill Warner's orders because they still wanted parents to buy toys for their children in a clueless way. Plus, Scumacher was humble enough to admit to doing it all wrong, unlike a certain, childish asshole who thinks his take on DC was misunderstood, too complex.
I still remember watching Batman & Robin in theaters when I was 5 and loving it, nipples and all. I was introduced to Batman with the Adam West movie, and always caught BTAS on TV, so I was already used to different tones if Batman. As long as he saved the day, I was a happy kid; and Batman did just that in this movie. Plus, the movie gave me my first movie crush with Poison Ivy.
I was introduced to Batman with the Batman 1989 & Batman Returns i was hooked ever since so watching B&R years later was a big disappointment i remember whipping the B&R tape at the wall it was insulting to watch how bad the movie was
Another good video dude. Never put down your old videos because you were still learning the tricks of the trade on youtube, and I enjoy coming back to those old videos. I was a kid who liked Batman and Robin in the late '90s, but I don't see it the same way as I did back then. I can at least watch it as a movie that's so bad it's entertaining. Someone recently made a good point that George Clooney actually is decent at playing the playboy persona of Bruce Wayne. I think it was Vee Infuso who said that. One thing I'm really looking forward to is you're getting closer to doing no man's land
No Man's Land is going to take a while yet and it's definitely going to be a challenge, even bigger than Knightfall! Also, I know that my old videos are part of my growing process, but whenever I look back at them I am 100% positive I could make them better now. And in this environment of hugely competitive media of online video creation, a creator needs to stand out above the rest to succeed and the only way to do that is with high quality videos. Don't get me wrong, I love my old videos for what they represent for me and the community, just not so much for how they are presented to new viewers.
@SalazarKnight I figured it as much, so I wait with great anticipation. No, I get you dude and I respect that you do revamped versions of those videos to appeal to new viewers.
Well one year later Blade came out and it was a massive success. Happy 25th Blade. You came out at the right time and the polar opposite to Batman and Robin
As you mentioned, Batman when I was a kid was Adam West and the 1966 tv show was perfect for me at that time (now, it’s just nostalgia). So, I definitely understand your attachment to the B&R movie, which I hated. Thanks for the video!
The Perfect Cut at 12:16 !! Holy Cutting Skills Batman!!! What a wonderful Video again. May I ask for a favor? I always wanted to see a proper Batman The Animated Series documentary, and yes I know there exists one which can be considered as "fine". But I want to feel the magic and the historical relevants of this favorite interpretation of batman of mine. With the beginnings, the impact, the episodes, the creators, the toys, the 90s feel and everything in between in movie length quality. And if someone can do that then it's you. I know that is a big project which can take months and I really don't mean this as "please do it!" but more like "Is there any chance that you would be interested in doing something like that?" Great content and a "watch every video" member of your subscribers right here :) usually even watching it on my TV ;)
Hey, thank you so much for writing! As for the question, I'm not sure. I never say never, but also I already made a video about BTAS a couple of years ago. It's a more personal video essay and I think I said almost everything I wanted to say about the show there. I don't really want to repeat myself so soon and as you said, there is a pretty good documentary out there already. That said, I will make a video about the final season of the series, right after the new Silver Age documentary and who knows, maybe someday in the future I will go back and do a complete BTAS documentary. It's just not in the plans at the moment. Again, thank you so much for watching my videos. I'm so glad to hear you enjoy the work I do here. It really means a lot!
I remember watching this on VHS as a kid a few years after it came out. Even then we thought it was cheesy, but hey, it's still worth a few laughs. The Bat-Credit-Card. Inspiring us to shop 😆
I unironically love this movie. For real. It's the best comedy film. I look at it this way, the WORST thing a movie can be is boring. Think Quantumania, Multiverse of Madness, Fant4stic etc. Batman & Robin is many things, but for the love of God is it not boring for a second.
Dude I totally dig the balanced perspective on this film 💯 Yes the film didn’t hold up very well as we got older but it was absolutely awesome when we were kids 🤙 Joel was going for the campier & 1960s throwback vibe & I totally dig it!
What happened? They created a movie to sell a toy line Between takes he was yelling, "remember, we're making a cartoon" They replaced Kilmner with Clooney They made Bane a freaking mongoloid All that said, I get a kick out of how bad this movie is, so bad its good, mainly for Freeze's ice puns😂 Not ashamed to say i saw it twice in cinema🤓
I was born in 1978, I grew up with Keaton Batman in 89 and others, this is my childhood film. Batman and Robin IS terrible but still good at the same time. They did their best but there are some good scenes and ideals behind it but companies can get greedy and ruin films. I like those movies much better than Nolan Batman films which I'm no fan of but they are good too. I appreciate each film in their own right.
This was the most thoughtful analysis of this film I’ve ever seen. Way to put a positive spin on a terrible movie. You’ve actually changed my perspective. Lol
Batman and Robin was basically hey im going to hire all my rich friends and make a Batman movie to sell merchandise so me and all my rich friends can get morre money!
I was 5 years old when this movie came out. I remember going to see it with my Dad and loving it, and, afterwards, begging Mum to buy me the Batmobile toy to go with the Batman Forever Batwing I'd got for my birthday the year before. As I grew up, I found myself picking more and more at this movie purely based on I enjoyed the later, darker comic stories a lot more. However, while I hold it up as an example of a bad Batman movie, it still holds a special place for me, same as the Adam West Batman I used to watch reruns of with Dad as a kid. Both still have pride of place in my collection of Batman Blu-Rays, and I still watch Batman and Robin once a year. Partly to remind myself, in this age of adaptations of varying quality and accuracy to the source material, of how bad it can be, but also for that nostalgia hit. Congratulations sir, you hit my feelings as someone who was part of the target demographic for this movie when it released right on the bullseye. You've earned my subscription today 🎉
Fun fact: _B&R_ is the only* Batfilm where Batman doesn't kill anyone. Even in the 1966 movie, he and Robin inadvertently kill the Penguin goons in the Batcave. *I have yet to see _The Batman_ . I know, I know, for shame...
I was 8 when this came out. I was so excited. Then, I watched it and didn't like it. I rented it once, but went back to Batman Forever. I think I've only watched this 3x mu whole life
I love your channel. Batman has had many aspects over the years. Luckily that means there's a Batman out there for everyone. I've gone to the theaters for every single Batman film since the first one in 89. After the opening scene in B&R I knew that this film was going to be troubled. I can't remember a more disappointing trip to the movies. But I was much younger then. After becoming a big Mr Freeze fan from TAS I've always envisioned Patrick Stewart to play him. Put him in a suit with those red goggles and it'd be perfect. He's supposed to be a tragic villain, Stewart could pull that off brilliantly. I do remember the comic tie ins with B&R. Those were not bad, but they were closer to source material than the movie was.
I was a teenager when Batman and Robin came out. I had loved the two Tim Burton movies, but Batman Forever didn't thrill me. Batman Forever gave me a good idea of what to expect from a sequel, and so I wasn't disappointed when I saw Batman and Robin. Actually my first exposure to Batman was the Adam West version, and so the silliness didn't even strike me as odd. I'm looking forward to you revisiting the silver age of Batman -- although I think your old videos are still worthwhile, even if they aren't as good as your newer ones.* But anyway, the silver age certainly isn't a bright spot for The Dark Knight, but it's at least interesting in its own way -- having such different sensibilities. (conversely I think Superman's best comics were made in the silver age!) *And I want to congratulate you on your improvement as a video creator and analyzer of fiction. I'm sure it's been hard to keep going, since it's obvious you put a lot of work into your videos, but I hope you feel the development of your ability to critique has made the whole endeavor worthwhile. I also want to express my gratitude by thanking you for the years of effort you've put in, as I've enjoyed every single one of your videos. You've inspired me to think more critically and clearly about entertainment. Thank you and keep up the good work! I hope life is treating you well. 🙂
@@SalazarKnight Thanks for the compliment, although I don't know what I've done to deserve it haha. Oh, and my one recommendation is you check out the World's Finest comics from the silver age. Those are probably the 'highest quality' Batman stories of that time period -- albeit it's mainly because they're Superman stories where Batman plays second-fiddle.
Way back in the '90's the story I heard was that many people felt Batman Returns was too dark and went too far, such as when the Penguin bites a guy's nose and it gushes blood. Sure people want a dark Batman but suddenly it became a series you couldn't take your kid to see. So starting with Batman Forever WB decided to go the kid friendly route by referencing the campiness of the '60's TV show and by introducing kid partner Robin. So basically the Batman movies went from one extreme to the other, from dark to campy.
I was 10 when Batman & Robin came out, but I didn't see it until it was on TV when I was about 16, and then got all four Burton/Schumacher movies on DVD for Christmas in 2004, just a few months before Batman Begins came out. But the reason that I enjoy Batman & Robin is because I was introduced to Batman through reruns of the 1966 TV series, and for the longest time, that was the only Batman that I was allowed to watch as I had younger siblings who weren't old enough to see Batman '89 and Batman Returns yet. So, no, it's not a good movie, but I love Batman & Robin because of how I was introduced to Batman in the early '90s.
Nothing happened to it. They made a campy big budget movie inspired by Adam West. Just because Millennials and zoomies need edgy grimdark all the time doesn't mean the movie was bad.
Salazar Knight. You've made a truly great video here. I went to see Batman and Robin at the cinema when I was 13. I am going to be honest. I don't hate Batman and Robin. It was good. Not great. It wasn't as good as Batman Forever. I feel the problem with Batman and Robin is that it was too much like the 1960s TV show and it was more a comedy, and it lost the darker aspects of the Batman mythology. I owned it on VHS, and I now own it on DVD. George Clooney was miscast as Batman. Arnold Schwarzenegger was good as Mr. Freeze. But if he didn't have the one-liners and was more serious. Arnold would have played it perfectly. Despite giving an over-the-top performance, Uma Thurman was actually good as Poison Ivy, and she was sexy and did she what she could with what she was given. You had a good message in the video. We are both RUclipsrs and we've grown and evolved over day with our videos. I am an underdog on RUclipsr. I am trying to make the videos I can. It can be lonely being an artist. You my friend have proven RUclipsrs and underdogs have a chance to succeed.
I grew up watching the 60's Batman show which was broadcasted in my homecountry of Greece in the mid 90's. I've always loved and STILL love Batman & Robin, even after watching and also loving all three previous films and Batman TAS.
I just rewatched B&R last weekend and while yes it is silly, it’s not a bad film imo. It’s a movie with a style and it holds onto that style throughout. I’d rather watch B&R over, idk, BvS or Man of Steel. I’ll take Schumacher’s artistic vision over Suicide Squad, Black Adam, or Thor Love and Thunder.
This movie is not the worst superhero film. That dishonor goes to the MCU. This one is quirky because of its unprofessional writing. More of the DC family or staff of the home office would have gotten involved in the preproduction writing it would have turned out masterful 😂
MICHAEL KEATON IS THE BEST BATMAN! I was LUCKY ENOUGH to do an interview with MICHAEL KEATON'S MOVEMENT DOUBLE CARL NEWMAN, over this past year whom actual wore the 1989 SUIT PERFORMING stunts and is also featured in some of the MOST ICONIC scenes/shots from the 1989 film. He worked closely with TIM BURTON as well as JACK NICHOLSON while on set, and speaks about his experience in GREAT DETAIL. Feel free to check it out! I'd GREATLY APPRECIATE IT 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
@@AAvsar-xr1rf I can watch Batman & Robin. I can’t sit through BvS again. The writing is so terrible. At least with this film, it knows what it’s going for and is consistent.
@@AAvsar-xr1rf you seem to be missing the point. Both are bad, but only BvS is unwatchable. And you seriously think “oh they explain it” is an excuse for the terrible writing in BvS? The explanations are equally dumb. BvS is a train wreck that doesn’t understand the characters it’s adapting, lives in a faux mature edgelord mindset, and has massive plot holes. In 2022, before The Batman came out, I rewatched every theatrical Batman movie made. BvS was the only one I felt like turning off. Hell, even 2017’s Justice League was better than it. You prefer BvS, good for you. Continue enjoying it. But you’ll never convince me that it isn’t the worst Batman movie ever.
@@AAvsar-xr1rf 🤣🤣🤣 You really said that with a straight face. Okay, let’s play, but I’ll be brief and not do EVERYTHING wrong with BvS because I don’t have time. Lex’s plan is so convoluted and filled with moments where it could have gone wrong and only makes sense if he read the script ahead of time, also only works if Batman and Superman are morons, which they end up being. Batman suddenly being all about killing makes no sense when you realize he still lets Joker live after killing Robin. Wonder Woman only exists to fight, give minor exposition and set up her own movie. Batman still kills after sparing Superman even when the idea that he’s “learned” from his bloodthirsty mistakes. Bruce Wayne receives creepy messages implying his ex employee blames him, doesn’t do the detective thing he’s supposed to and dig into it after the explosion. Oh yeah, and the entire “I can dream the bad future” sequence, including the hilariously stupid first appearance in a movie of the freaking Flash (now with edgy armor) is terrible, goes nowhere, and has no actual baring on the plot of the actual movie itself. Ma Kent telling Clark he doesn’t owe the world anything, which should never be something she says because Superman gets his morals from the Kents. Speaking of, Pa Kent showing up as a ghost just to essentially tell Clark “helping people just causes problems.” That’s just off the top of my head. Look, I get it, Batman in that movie bares the barest superficial resemblance to Frank Miller’s Batman, and that book probably blew your mind when you first read it (even though it’s done damage to Batman as a character in the long run). But again, Batman & Robin may be dumb, but it’s a logical kind of dumb.
@@AAvsar-xr1rf BvS made Batman look like a meathead moron who put more into his fists than his mind. And it’s telling that you had no response to the bad writing beyond “I don’t like the bat credit card joke.” In the end, it doesn’t matter. You think BvS is better, you can go and watch it. You came onto my comment to try and argue against my opinion, which is ultimately pointless because you’ll never change my mind. It’s something I’ve noticed with most fans of Zack Snyder’s DC films: you take criticism and opinion against any of his movies as some sort of insult toward yourself. I’m done successfully defending my stance on BvS being worse than Batman & Robin. So you have two options: walk away and wait until Salazar Knight gets to Batman v Superman so you can leave a comment gushing how much you like it more than this that I’ll pretty much ignore because I don’t need to change anyone else’s mind to feel valid in my opinions, or keep leaving replies that will result in me ignoring you and potentially blocking you just so I don’t keep getting notifications about you continuing to argue with me for no discernible reason.
My brother and I used to watch this fairly frequently when he was still with us and we enjoyed it unironically -- precisely because it was such a throwback to the 60s Batman era. I can acknowledge it's faults, but can have no real hatred in my heart for Batman & Robin.
I loved this movie back when I was a kid and couldn't understand the puns but as an adult is just so painful. I still have nostalgia for it but there is no way I am sitting through a full viewing, great video.
I was 4 years old when this came out I had the toys and all the merch I could back then....Yet now as an adult I dont feel it as something I could enjoy today or even the memory of it, unlike Batman Forever which I just love. The only thing I always liked about Batman & Robin was Robin "nightwing style" suit and that badass motorcycle.
Can you do the fifth Batman movie that was supposed to happen in 1999 but didn’t happened, because of the failure of the 1997 Batman and Robin, there was 2 different titles, Batman Triumphant, Batman Unchained etc. George Clooney, Chris O’Donald, Alicia Silverstone were all coming back, scarecrow was going to be the villain, along with Harley Quinn written as the Joker’s daughter, Batman sees hallucinations of the villains of the past he defeated, the Joker(Jack Nicoleson), Penguin(Danny DeVito), Catwoman(Michelle Phieffer)Two-Face(Tommy Lee Jones)and the Riddler(Jim Carrey) all coming back, it was very close to happen, but Joel Schumacher and Warner Bros couldn’t agree on this because like I said, the Batman and Robin film was a failure, I was 9 years old and I used to like it as a kid, but looking back at the movie over the years, it turned out that it was awful, I say Superman 4 was way worse than Batman and Robin, I think it’s second worst superhero movie next to Superman 4.
it still messes me up how this movie has to date the best if not IMO the only good official design for bane in live action lmfao. Like between this and Insomniac's Venom what is it with ppl always cooking the hardest with designs when it comes to the worst versions of these characters?!?😂😂😂
when I was a child I thought the costume change was because the "new suits" where somehow cold or freeze resistant....rewatched the movie a few days ago...and yeah its really bad...but for kids I think it was kinda enjoyable...when I first saw it I was about 7 years old and really liked it at the time...also in spanish it gains a lot XD
Everyone of the 80’s/90’s Batman films perfectly captured an era of the comics. While not my favorite Batman film, I like it better than Batman Returns.
Yeah, so Batman & Robin was the first superhero film I watched on video, and it was a film I watched as a kid multiple times. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I was surprised at the negative reaction to the movie, and despite realising how bad it is...I simply can't hate it. Batman & Robin is a nostalgic movie for me, that guilty pleasure that was there for me until I watched the newer superhero flicks. And no, I didn't have the toys because I watched this in the 2000's, not when it came out.
I can totally sympathize with what you said about this movie meaning allot to you when you were growing up despite the hate around it. I have really similar feelings about the Star Wars prequels.
Salazar Knight, who do you think would be the best successor to Bruce Wayne under the Batman symbol? It's a complex topic so maybe it is something worth discussing in a video about the different Batmen that replaced Bruce Wayne
You're right, it's a super complex topic and many times it all boils down to personal preference. I think that someday in the future we can maybe take a look at the many successors of Batman. Also, please call me Sal :)
I used to enjoy this film as a kid for a few years but after awhile, I realized I didn’t watch this film much and watched the other Batman movies and shows over Batman and Robin and it wasn’t until I saw Batman Begins I realized why: it’s because I didn’t like the film. Batman and Robin is the kind of film for me where I loved it for a few years after it came out, but later grew to not like it. Regarding the production of the film, had the studio not interfered and try to make it a big toy commercial then the film could have been better. Unfortunately, the film as it is isn’t something I would call good in a serious way, but in a so bad it’s good way. It’s the kind of film that is essentially like the 1966 Batman, yet is supposed to follow the previous three films and because of the light/campy tone, it doesn’t fit. I don’t think George Clooney was good except in the scenes where he was with Michael Gough. He seems to try to do the best he can whenever he’s with Gough, but outside of that he comes across as being quite flat and just walking through his part. Of course the script didn’t anything nor did the interference by Warner Bros. I say let the directors do whatever and if it turns out well great but if it fails then you can blame the director. For me, this is a so bad it’s good film for me. While the parallels to the Adam West show and film are there, it doesn’t fit with the darker and more serious tone that the Tim Burton films had as well as what Batman Forever had at various points. That’s my opinion on the film, but thank you for the video man. It’s a very interesting look at this film.
@1:42 Now don't get me wrong you nailed why many of these RUclipsrs are big and obviously Star Wars took the hit from them so badly Disney got the franchise and then ruined it. But these middle aged men were the kids and teens back in 1997 and we all hated it back then for the right reasons. I mean BTAS kinda set the standard back to the concept that children's entertainment doesn't have to exclude adults like the old 30s-early 60s era stuff was. I mean Batman and Robin is more an homage to 60s Batman and I think had they did a suit more inline with that it might have worked but people had expectations for Batman by then. Weirdly in retrospect I don't know why WB thought any of it would work because none of their kids shows at that time were as kiddie as that movie was.
Forever WAS better than returns. Im an absolute freak of a person and even i am like wtf was this shit? But we got Pfeiffer in that suit so....were good 😊
I mean it was kinda a hands tied situation Warner bros didn’t want a complex movie they wanted money so in the end if we're going to blame anyone it would be the studio, but honestly after all this time does it really matter i mean this movie was made 26 years ago sure it was bad and (almost canceled the franchise) but whats done is done ,we're still getting Batman movies these days and honestly this movie is not the worst thing ever made its just a really odd film that was made to sell toys and get money Also 15:16 gave me nostalgia critic flashbacks lol
I dont understand why people are so enraged and disappointed on this movie. They say because its goofy and very lighthearted in tone compared to the Tim Burton’s movies. Okay, thats true but they seem to forget the fact that this was not an immediate follow-up to those movies, BATMAN FOREVER was so why not hate that one instead? Thats the one that really changed the tone, not this one. After Batman Forever you should really know what to expect with B&R so why the disappointment?? Did they skip Batman Forever and watched this one right after Batman Returns? I dont get it…
Let's see? Well, unlike "B&R" its predecessor had Tim Burton-like moments ( "the Suit-Up", "the Wayne murder flashback", "circus murder with Dick's family", "Dick's grief", "We're the Same", "Red Book Deleted Scene", "Giant Bat", "Two-Face calling Batman a killer in another deleted scene", "Bruce lamenting that it's all his fault that his parents died", etc. The film isn't balls to the wall cheesy unlike its sequel. Make no mistake, it's still cheesy but it's at odds with itself as if it doesn't know what type of film it is. That's why people today are more lenient because they understand that "Forever" has the potential to be a decent film if WB didn't push Joel into a corner, request merchandise, and cut out those deleted scenes that explain more about the title.
@@Weirdman20 people seem to forget B&R has moments like those too. They only focus on Mr. Fries puns but tend to overlook his tragic side which is well portrayed in the movie and makes him a multidimensional character. They also overlook the authority conflict between Batman and Robin, Alfreds sickness, etc.
It's all the new characters that this film introduced- Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Bane, and Mr Freeze. None of them are developed properly in the film and it gets messy because you don't feel anything particularly for those characters and their exploits. Apart from the Bat credit card, which is ridiculous, Clooney comes out of it well enough; Arnie not so, but it is the script and film direction that deny him a better opportunity
I didn't see this movie when it came out and instead read the comic adaptation. I recognized that it wasn't a great story, but not worthy of the hate the movie received. Then I tried to watch the movie, and I couldn't believe all the cartoon sound effects assaulting my ears. I turned it off. I don't think I've actually watched the whole thing to this day.
I was 7 when this movie came out and I thought it was okay. Hell, I didn't really know about the Batman mythos when I was 18. But I'm glad Joel Schumacher and his team felt remorse for making this movie. Not like Disney with their obsession with diversity crap, especially that horrid live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Adam West's Batman never took things seriously either. But the actors are having fun. It keeps characters simple and logical and not so many plots. The Synder-verse and most of DCEU took things incredibly seriously. But the actors don't care. Also it juggles tons of plots and characters at a time. Schumacher's films seem like the actors don't care [except for Jim Carrey], and the tones [and aesthetics] juggle rather than commit to dark or campy. It's just so jarring. These are what make a movie good or bad, does everyone care/ have fun, and does it feel consistent? Lighter Batman or Darker Batman is just a preference. I prefer darker, but there's a place for lighter. Hell, it could've been a delightfully bad film if it had just committed to the camp, even with the actors phoning in. But no, there's drama.
it´s a shame people hate it so much becasue i personally genuinely love it and i think Clooney was great and so were Uma, Arnold and Chris, it hurt me a lot when i found out people hated it
I've given way too much thought into how a "Bat Credit Card" would actually work without revealing Batman's identity.
It's probably like a key to the city or something and is just ceremonial.
Went to wb movie world around this time
They were selling pre loaded bat debit cards to use throughout the park😂

There is some is some really good stuff in B&R. I love the scene where Bruce comes to visit Alfred after he has become bedridden due to his illness. The way Clooney & Gough play that scene is beautiful. I do not know why it is not respected more it really is one of the best Alfred and Bruce moments in any Batman film. The way Bruce says "I love you old man" is just so heartfelt and genuine.
Gosh this is the first Batman & Robin commentary video I've seen that actually SAYS something. It doesn't just do the easy "it's horrible let's make fun of it". Nicely done!

@JDoe-gf5oz i agree with you 100% and don't forget Bale's stupid cancer voice the Nolan trilogy is overrated as hell and boring. Its basically batman fighting in Chicago
@@jaredgarcia8638Nolan's trilogy is boring and overrated as hell
Saw it twice in cinema
I hate that it didn't even resemble the comics, but then not many superhero movies do

The Batman Returns logo is way more badass and edgy then the lame B&R logo 😂
I remember getting a large George Clooney Batman figure for Christmas in 97.
I had a great time with the toyline! I had three different Mr.Freezes, Poison Ivy, Bane, two Batmen and the Batmobile!😁
I got a Bane action figure, love my mother, so I spared her the differences between Bane and, whatever that was in Batman and Robin😂
I watched the VHS as a kid non-stop. I always liked the design of Gotham City.
Did the exact same thing but with the Batman Returns vhs tape i wore the hell out of that tape to the point that it stopped working lol i was obsessed with that movie
@@Mike-t5r9q I watched The Rock so much the tape literally came apart and I had to beg my mom to replace it.
My pleasure! It's always nice to hear stories like yours.
I'd love to see a Dark Knight Returns movie with Josh Brolin as an old grizzled Batman.
Who said that?
@@amoretpax199 I'm pretty sure he's talking about Zack Snyder.
@@filiperoque1801 He should blame WB not Zack Snyder.
Uma was majestic and etherial as Poison Ivy and made me like the film even more!😍
I was introduced to Batman with the Batman 1989 & Batman Returns i was hooked ever since so watching B&R years later was a big disappointment i remember whipping the B&R tape at the wall it was insulting to watch how bad the movie was
Another good video dude.
Love 60s batman, shark repellant 😂🦈

The Perfect Cut at 12:16 !! Holy Cutting Skills Batman!!! What a wonderful Video again. May I ask for a favor? I always wanted to see a proper Batman The Animated Series documentary, and yes I know there exists one which can be considered as "fine". But I want to feel the magic and the historical relevants of this favorite interpretation of batman of mine. With the beginnings, the impact, the episodes, the creators, the toys, the 90s feel and everything in between in movie length quality. And if someone can do that then it's you. I know that is a big project which can take months and I really don't mean this as "please do it!" but more like "Is there any chance that you would be interested in doing something like that?"
Great content and a "watch every video" member of your subscribers right here :) usually even watching it on my TV ;)
@@SalazarKnight I totally understand :) Thank you for your kind and fair answer :)
It all started when the studio removed Tim Burton from the 3rd movie, would’ve been a great way to end a trilogy.
Maybe he should have made a Batman movie instead of a goth acid trip about Catwoman and Penguin.
@@JDoe-gf5oz That was the best of that series.
This is one of the most compassionate takes I've ever seen of this movie, and I give you kudos for that.
Great video. I'm a new suscriber from Quito, Ecuador since today and I'm watching some of your oldies.
Batman & Robin is Batman “66” updated and on crack.
At least the was one saving grace of the film: Uma Thurman's sexy bodysuit and pantyhose combination for poison ivy
I was 16 when it came out. I don't remember having strong feelings about it at the time but I haven't watched it since.
I'd keep it that way don't rematch it again
I remember watching this on VHS as a kid a few years after it came out. Even then we thought it was cheesy, but hey, it's still worth a few laughs.

@alice5790 yes, and as well as the infamous "Bat-nipples".
Nice to see a video that’s not just saying “Batman and Robin is bad” for easy applause, even though it is bad.
As much i as i love it, even i can't ignore the awful script.😔
I was a grown adult when I saw this movie for the first time...and I loved it.
I unironically love this movie. For real. It's the best comedy film. I look at it this way, the WORST thing a movie can be is boring. Think Quantumania, Multiverse of Madness, Fant4stic etc. Batman & Robin is many things, but for the love of God is it not boring for a second.
I think pretty much the same as you about this movie. Loved it as a kid, and I still like it a lot ahah
This Bane scared the s*** out of me as a kid
Dude I totally dig the balanced perspective on this film 💯 Yes the film didn’t hold up very well as we got older but it was absolutely awesome when we were kids 🤙 Joel was going for the campier & 1960s throwback vibe & I totally dig it!
What happened?
They created a movie to sell a toy line
Between takes he was yelling, "remember, we're making a cartoon"
They replaced Kilmner with Clooney
They made Bane a freaking mongoloid
All that said, I get a kick out of how bad this movie is, so bad its good, mainly for Freeze's ice puns😂
Not ashamed to say i saw it twice in cinema🤓
At least this Bane's mask looks better than the one in DKR.
I think I've only watched this 3x mu whole life
2:32 brilliant transition btw
(conversely I think Superman's best comics were made in the silver age!)
*And I want to congratulate you on your improvement as a video creator and analyzer of fiction.
Thank you. It means a lot coming fro you!
Batman forever is my favorite batman movie. I feel like it’s the most perfect batman movie
I enjoyed it too, as a child back in the day. Thanks for your sincerity.
Bad yes. Worst no. To the people who have said its the worst superhero movie hear this...have you seen Superman IV?
Nothing happened to it. They made a campy big budget movie inspired by Adam West. Just because Millennials and zoomies need edgy grimdark all the time doesn't mean the movie was bad.
I enjoyed this movie as a kid. I still enjoy it now as an adult. But I don't think it's a good movie.
I Love Mr. Freeze in this movie. Unironically.
I just love this channel so much. Just wanted to say that. Keep up the excellent work!i
Thank you!
@@AAvsar-xr1rf 🤣🤣🤣
You really said that with a straight face.
Speaking of, Pa Kent showing up as a ghost just to essentially tell Clark “helping people just causes problems.”
That’s just off the top of my head.
And it’s telling that you had no response to the bad writing beyond “I don’t like the bat credit card joke.”
In the end, it doesn’t matter.
BATMAN: The Box-Office RETURNS
My brother and I used to watch this fairly frequently when he was still with us and we enjoyed it unironically -- precisely because it was such a throwback to the 60s Batman era. I can acknowledge it's faults, but can have no real hatred in my heart for Batman & Robin.
“The Heat is on” worst Batman quote 😂😂😂
Ironically one of the worst superhero films ever made leads into one of the best movie trilogy ever made 😅
BATMAN And Robin,89 and returns made me a BATMAN Fan for life.
I loved this movie back when I was a kid and couldn't understand the puns but as an adult is just so painful. I still have nostalgia for it but there is no way I am sitting through a full viewing, great video.
It's undeniably a terrible movie, but somehow, I'd choose Batman & Robin over the vast majority of modern superhero slop made by Hollywood.
I heard Schumacher and Kilmer hated each other which led to the split.
Venom in Spider-Man 3 is more faithful than Bane in this movie.
If only he was as muscular as Bane...😒
This Batman film makes me ponder a philosophical question:
Do kids have expectations?
Most likely no! Back then, all i cared about was having fun with my favourite super hero and his adventures.🤔
This is why Superman works alone
Michael Keaton is my Batman alongside Kevin Conroy
I love Arnold as Freeze !
Warner Bros were entirely to blame for it’s failing.
Arnold got payed twenty five million dollars for this movie. Most of the scenes were a stunt man wearing the armor, not Arnold himself.
I imagine counting merchandise sales it still easily made a profit
What I never got was , well, does Arkham have coed cells?
Cuz thats how it ended.
I was born in '93, liked this movie back then and still hate it now.....nostalgia can't save everything.
@@SalazarKnight You got it Sal!
Always Terry McGinnis. Damian's Apocalyptic Batman though is a guilty pleasure of mine.
While I dont agree completely agree with your opinions of this film, I do respect your commentary about the movie. Thanks for sharing.
That vin diesel edit wss hilarious dude lol
Batman & Robin is a cautionary superhero tale that Disney lately as failed to heed.
But we got Pfeiffer in that suit so....were good 😊
Returns is way better then Forever lay off the drugs. Batman Forever sucks
@@Mike-t5r9q nah, jist an opinion of yours, my child.
I just assumed it was an homage to Batman '66.
Joel did Falling Down, don't worry he's a legend in many ways on top of his other big box office hits.
I don't think Batman Returns was darker...it seems a lot sillier and campier.
I mean it was kinda a hands tied situation Warner bros didn’t want a complex movie they wanted money so in the end if we're going to blame anyone it would be the studio, but honestly after all this time does it really matter i mean this movie was made 26 years ago sure it was bad and (almost canceled the franchise) but whats done is done ,we're still getting Batman movies these days and honestly this movie is not the worst thing ever made its just a really odd film that was made to sell toys and get money
Also 15:16 gave me nostalgia critic flashbacks lol

True. But, those good moments are overshadowed by the goofiness going on in the film. Even "Forever" isn't safe from the same criticism.
@@Weirdman20 thats the thing, that forever is the one that started that and yet, its B&R the one that gets all the bashing.
I didn’t like this movie when I saw it back in those days. I like it now. It basically closer to the 1960s campy Batman.
No kidding!
After I heard Joel Schumacher apologize I felt really bad.. It's not a good movie but he didn't deserve that level of hate.
Loved this movie as a kid and I don't hate it today.
Batman and Robin is the worst Superhero movie ever UNTIL you Remember they made a Live Action GREEN LANTERN movie!!
it´s a shame people hate it so much becasue i personally genuinely love it and i think Clooney was great and so were Uma, Arnold and Chris, it hurt me a lot when i found out people hated it
