its been nearly a decade since i saw this video. Its hard to imagine you talking about a beth game in this light. Do you still cherish Skyrim now the same way you did then?
I have thought of a strategy for this game from watching this video: go into every area/dungeon at level 1 (or some low level) to lock all the monsters to a low level so they're easy to beat.
I just picked up skyrim and sealed coll. edition. Haven't had the time to dedicate to it, i picked it up all late, but soon will dive into it, no new consoles for me so i've got plenty of time. first in the series for me. Got the thick book too.
I've asked for this for Christmas, have played Oblivion but not really the main quest, just hours of side questing, joining guilds and generally exploring, so I really appreciate your comparison of the two games. The 2 Fallout games you mentioned are 2 of my top 10 games of all time so I am very much looking forward to playing this now! Appreciate the lack of spoilers in your videos :)
I really dig the perk system, though I've found myself leveling a lot of my secondary skills in order to bump up my overall level for the levels above 30. Great game.
Hey man, I subscribed to you because you seem like a nice guy, and gaming's obviously your passion and you talk about very enthusiastically. Keep doing what you're doing.
i have never played any game in the series, but i've been wanting to try this one out.partly due to the hype it's had,and also because of what i have seen.i just gotta make sure i'm ready to start it,if it's as immersive as it is..yeah.your impressions and description of the game were very insightful and i understood things like how you'd not want to share gameplay and rather play on your own.i can relate to that
The strategy guide is definitely my best ever. I do understand what you mean about being abosrbed in Skyrim and not streaming. I might stream it myself but I don't plan on talking or chatting much, but the idea that i can save all my adventures on video permentantly on JTV/TwitchTV is amazing.
I'm so glad to see that someone else appreciates how massive the game is! I managed to rack up about 120 hours in all since the weekend it came out. I play with one character, an Imperial BattleMage whom I can also switch to stealth if needed. I only did the main civil war quests and didn't even begin with the main quest involving the dragons. So so glad you're enjoying it and hope you continue to enjoy it Pete!
@CreditDue52 Have you tried more than a single character build? I started the game as a pure warrior and it got a bit boring, however with a bit of imagination and difficulty tweaking, the combat was NOT boring at all. I switched to the thiefy/stabby rogue build and I enjoyed myself more. Then I switched yet again to a pure mage build and I'm just loving it. Try starting in the "correct" city pertaining to your class, such as Winterhold for mages, Riften for thieves, and Whiterun for warriors.
I am totally with you on a lot of your opinions. I love it when a game just immerses you like Skyrim does. The only gripes I have with it are the minor glitches with the physics engine, texture pop-up, crashing, the usual Bethesda stuff, but the scope and artistry of the game outweighs all of these issues.
I am completely enthralled in the world of Skyrim every time I play it. I just love being immersed in a world that is full of fantasy yet feels so realistic though. I feel that all three of my characters are an extension of my if not each a different life. I have now played in total of an estimated 100 hours (stat found through save files) and I still find different stuff everyday.
I traded this in when it first came out. I think the achievement list and possibilities overwhelmed me. I bought it two weeks ago with the DLC and haven't been off it since. Clocked 120 hours on it with two characters. This game is my second favourite game of all time. Silent Hill 3 comes first. But this, wow. I can't believe I traded it in. It's brilliant!
I felt the same with all the dungeons. I was blown away when I cleared my first one. Also 30 hours in. Only been to 2 major cities. Nowhere close to scratching the surface. Blows Morrowind and Oblivion out of the water.
You play like me, I'm now 70 hours in and I have still a city or two I haven't visited also I haven't done the main story quest yet. Playing it little by litte, when you happen to reach the main quest location makes it feel so much more EPIC and the level of immersion is vast! I've swept the map for hidden caves and dungeons and had good time doing so, without any quicktravelling also. Skyrim is also great because it cant throw big curveballs to make your journey more surprising ;)
I'm about 45 hours in so far, and I've only done about 50 misc. quests and 5 main quests. This is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. I'm floored.
@majicpen Check your save file size, if it is over 5MB the game starts having awful slowdown and freezes etc. Pretty sure Bethesda is currently working on it, this issue doesn't exist on 360.
@PeteDorr I'm struggling on this game. Honestly? The levelling system is the game breaker for me. Could you not run everywhere and have them all lock at level 1? (Unrealistic, I know). If you have any spare time, it would be nice if you went through how you level (the mechanism of what is required and in what proportions). If not then I look forward to your review regardless. Also I found Oblivion too easy. Can you change difficulty mid-game or only at the start?
I am really loving this game. Even more than Oblivion. I really like how they tell you which dungeons you have cleared. Which is nice for someone who wants to explore everything. I know I am more than 40 hours into the game and still haven't finished the main story. Also can't wait to see what kind of dlc they will release for the game.
Dude ,ole time gamer here.. back to the days of , well I wont even say how far back lets just say "The Bards Tale"...hehe, I'm with you on all you said about Skyrim, I've spent over 400 hours each in Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion and now only 50 hours into Skyrim the $60 price take has already paid for itself. excellent heart felt review,,,, were all looking to escape this World from time to time and this beast that Bethesda has created is just mind blowing....
loving the game so far. according to steam i've played 20+ hours so far but i've still only visted whiterun, riften and was in solitude for maybe 5 minutes, and only went there to get closer to a quest in the wilderness. i've done some companion quests and some thieves guild quests, and i've visited the greybeards. that's about it. still haven't played it since the first weekend i got it though, been trying to do homework and crap.
Ive spent about 35 hours playing Skyrim over the past week and a bit and dwam! Pete this is simply my favourite game of all time (sorry FFX/Tetris). The emotions that this game evokes in me simply cant be reproduced! I want to just wander and fulfill this blind warriors dream that I've had since a kid. This game has allowed me freedom on a new scale, far beyond Bethesda's previous efforts. Thanks for your thoughts on the game so far and cant wait for your review........next decade :P
That's quite a glowing review. I was going to wait for the GOTY edition because I know these games get so much DLC that I'm not going to download, but now I'm reconsidering that decision... DAT STRATEGY GUIDE.
Overwelming you took the words write out of my mouth, after playing skyrim it exhausts my brain soo much,I end up sleeping for 12 hours straight. Great game it literally blows my mind away.
Has Pete released a review of Skyrim now? It may be buried in another video that I have yet to watch (been quite busy lately). It would be interesting to see if his views are the same. I loved Skyrim, but towards the end found it a bit monotonous, furthermore the bugs absolutely killed it for me, I downloaded several patches, but I seemed to be cursed Alduin being invincible *check* Shadowmere not appearing *check*, fair enough I had console commands, but to me it spoiled my experience.
bought this when it dropped to £20 my god i wish i played this ages ago it's absolutely AMAZING i dont like playing it like i have no life but when i come back to it omg the world never stops to amaze me
I'm roughly the same about of time into it as you Pete (just over 40 hours) and i've got to say I feel much the same about it. I'm just so confused as to where it should go in my favourites list (it was perfect as it was.... now this has come along and needs to be put in there near the top).
You didn't mention anything about the shouts mechanic or the dragons.. How are they implemented? I know they look great, and shouting seems very bad ass. But I just want to know your opinion on that too.
I've played Morrowind before (had no idea what I was getting into) and because it was so vast (and clunky) I stopped playing it. When Oblivion first came out, I had played it once and still kind of had no idea what to do or where to go. It took Skyrim to finally knock me on the head with the type of genre that it really is. I was used to stream lined RPG's like FF and things like that (where the story pulls you along and leads you to where you need to go, as opposed to Elder Scrolls where you get out of prison and say, whelp, good luck to ya.) ... I went back and played Morrowind and Oblivion and I enjoy those games ... but I really do love Skyrim. Skyrim gives me a reason to go exploring and just marvel at the beauty of the world. Plus -- I absolutely love dragons. :p It's so nice to find a video about Skyrim that's positive. Keep up the amazing work.
I have Oblivion and Skyrim for my 360 and love both of them. I also like doing the achievements for both Oblivion and Skyrim. I agree it is a game to play for sure. At first I was annoyed at talking to people and getting a quest as it seems every one you talk to has a quest but I don't mind that any more and use the quests to level myself up.
I share your opinions when it comes to Skyrim. I've played just about every AAA release this year and Skyrim will stick with me for a very long time. It's expertly crafted and I absolutely adore it.
I'm 100 hours in and still not bored, still haven't touched dark brotherhood which is my fav questline and just started mage quest. And probably haven't even seen half the dungeons, it's just unbelievable.
Excellent video bro! U just talked me into getting this game! I love RPG's and have played them since the SNES era, but I am relativley new to western style RPG's. Would you recommend me getting the strategy guide for it?
No worries on not streaming it, I can understand wanting to fully immerse solo into an experience... a bit of the same reason why I don't dig going to movie theaters...
One thing you forgot to mention is that, even with all the different paths/skills you can play the game by, they are all useful, and havn't just been added in for the purpose of more content like many other developers have done.
great review duder.....this is my first rpg based game i have ever owned on a console....and i love it....the only other rpg ive ever played was diablo II on pc ....other then that i play fps games....but i truly love the feel and freedom i get with skyrim...im a wood elf mage btw :)
I'm around 40 hours also, I'm at about the same point as you Pete but I did the Dark Brotherhood and that guild pretty much makes you visit all nine Holds
Hi Pete, you know, I'm more to JRPGs, and Wow never caught my attention, so do you think Skyrim could be something for me? I've tried a little bit of Fallout, but it didn't grap me as much as most japanese games. Thank you
ive never played any of the elder scrolls... but i've played tons of mmorpgs.. like probably 50+ different ones.. and when i look at skyrim i think to my self, whats the point? it looks like other mmos ive played, except its single player... so it looks boring to me, but i havent even given it a chance, do you think i should?
I've revisited Oblivion on my PC with some mods for new races and making the graphics better and I still can't believe how amazing the overall game is. It really does stand up to today's standards! I can't wait to get my paws (haha punny no?) on Skyrim and see how this game will evolve and stand up 6-7 years from now!
Skyrim kicks ass. So far I've been in it for 130+ hours. At first I was thrown off by the controls, but now I'm level 38 and crushing everything under my Dragonplate boots. When I got a bit bored, I started a quest that dragged me underground to Blackreach, and nearly shat myself. I suggest you see it for yourself rather than look up a video, much more epic, but I digress. Skyrim is a massive improvement upon Oblivion, in more ways than I can describe in a comment.
would you recommend playing oblivion first, if so which one should I get: the GOTY edition or the 5th anniversary version? do they both include the dlc?
coming from someone who was not a fan of Oblivion, I am loving this game! They changed everything about Oblivion that I didn't like. It's especially great on the PC with max settings. I find Bethesda games MUST be played on the PC simply for the modding community alone. I already have some graphical mods that make the game run smoother and look better than the stock version! Great review Pete!
Haha it's awesome because you played your first 40 hours (I'm at 35 hours) exactly like me and you have the exact same impressions on the game! Keep up the good work man. It's REALLY rare that I say this but man, you do deserve more views :)
Have you had the chance to play The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword Petedorr? I myself have finished it and would just like your tooughts on it :) good impressionvideo.
@SatchelKleyn The first piece of DLC is already out. Check Steam it does not include content. They said there plans are not to expand, but to get bugs worked out and make it look better. It be a while before an content for skyrim will be out. They think it is big enough.
It may sound a bit odd, but I'm just now getting into the Elder Scrolls games. Quite literally actually, because I just received Oblivion: The GOTY edition in the mail yesterday. Better late then never, though, right? :) I'm really enjoying the game, though. I put about 3 hours into it last night, and I just started helping some priest named Martin after his village was destroyed. I'm sure you can remember when you played through this, Pete :) From what I've played, I can't wait to get Skyrim!
i was loving skyrim, but then i had a game ending glitch that prevented me from finishing the main quest. i was about 40 hours in so i m hoping for a patch
I love this game but I have a old tv and I cant see the text on the sides or even read it and my grandad wont let me play on his big 1080p TV because he thinks it will break it..
How did you get a Sega Channel hoodie?? That is incredible! It's like, the coolest hoodie I've ever seen! Unbelievable!! Oh and Skyrim is pretty great too!
Skryim is amazing, I've also put in around 30 to 40 hours and I haven't even meet the graybeards. It's really awesome. But, I've picked up several games, and I'm going through a bunch of them at the same time.
Other than a few broken quests nothings ever bothered me about an elder scroll game. I loved morrowind and oblivion. I played those games over and over again. Trying out diferent races, provacation, sighns. I haven't been able to put skyrim down. I've completed the main quest and the main guild quests, not the radiant ones. And I've maxed some of my skills.
When a dragon landed right in the main street of a small town and I fought it right in front of the town people and took that beast down .The rush I got like no other game gave me.I was a low level fighter early in the game..I really felt bad some of the town people die from it. THIS game ROCKS! Oh, do not cheat and over level. It takes the fun out of the game. It took me over a hour to take a over power witch down in a dungeon. Man it was fun, there is always way to do it,without leveling up.
I loved Oblivion both on Xbox 360 and pc. I picked the Xbox 360 version of Skyrim, but I haven't really played it because Im waiting for the new patch that fixes the texture problems.
I can't wait to see The Elder Scrolls VI on the Next Generation Consoles but for now i'm still gonna keep playing Skyrim and loving it and hope to see a new Fallout Game using the new Game Engine Skyrim was using.
Oblivion is, hands down, my favourite game of all time. I think it's safe to say that I've put at least 1, 000 hours into it. However, try as I might, I just cannot get into Skyrim. I don't know why as the game is definitely of a high quality, but I'm just not getting immersed in it. Anyone got any tips?
I've been playing for ages and still havent seen 5 of the cities, its crazy.. The dungeons are huge - I think it is certainly one of the best games ever, possibly the best. I'll be really happy if future dlc expands it even more, adds more quests etc. Its vast though.
I just finished the main quest at 70 hours... Freakin awesome game! So much fun
Hi
12 years later and this is still an incredible game, one of the most enjoyable and jam-packed open worlds of all time
You lied to me! Where are the skyrim impressions!
I am so late to the party on this game, but I am dying to get it. I need to donate more plasma
oh jeez lol
its been nearly a decade since i saw this video. Its hard to imagine you talking about a beth game in this light. Do you still cherish Skyrim now the same way you did then?
It was #4 in his 'favorite games of the decade' list so it's safe to assume he likes it still.
Got the thick book too.
not if you wanna keep your spleen
I've asked for this for Christmas, have played Oblivion but not really the main quest, just hours of side questing, joining guilds and generally exploring, so I really appreciate your comparison of the two games.
The 2 Fallout games you mentioned are 2 of my top 10 games of all time so I am very much looking forward to playing this now!
Appreciate the lack of spoilers in your videos :)
Shoulda labeled the video "my first impressions" i thought u were gunna do voice impressions

The strategy guide is definitely my best ever. I do understand what you mean about being abosrbed in Skyrim and not streaming. I might stream it myself but I don't plan on talking or chatting much, but the idea that i can save all my adventures on video permentantly on JTV/TwitchTV is amazing.
Skyrim is an amazing play. So much content, and it never gets old. I've put over 300 hours in mine.
I feel the same way, Skyrim is quite possibly my favorite game of all time. I can't stop playing it.
The only gripes I have with it are the minor glitches with the physics engine, texture pop-up, crashing, the usual Bethesda stuff, but the scope and artistry of the game outweighs all of these issues.
Game of the year? Game of the century!
I've finished Skyrim and I can say that is in my top 3 favourite games of all times(along with Heroes of Might and Magic 2-1997 and World of Warcraft)
I traded this in when it first came out. I think the achievement list and possibilities overwhelmed me. I bought it two weeks ago with the DLC and haven't been off it since. Nice overview, Pete! Thanks for taking the time to share.

I love to see you and Gix team up!!!
I'm about 45 hours in so far, and I've only done about 50 misc. quests and 5 main quests. This is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. I'm floored.

I'm struggling on this game.
Can you change difficulty mid-game or only at the start?
ive done 660 hours on skyrim and i am still miles of doing everything
grats to you man, Ive only done 50 for me its been the weakest elder scrolls game but thats just me

@bewts420 No, whiterun is the main city, it's kind of where all the main quests are based around and stuff. Also it's the first city you find.
loving the game so far. according to steam i've played 20+ hours so far but i've still only visted whiterun, riften and was in solitude for maybe 5 minutes, and only went there to get closer to a quest in the wilderness. i've done some companion quests and some thieves guild quests, and i've visited the greybeards. that's about it. still haven't played it since the first weekend i got it though, been trying to do homework and crap.
Good choice on picking the console version, I have ran into a ton of problems running it on PC.
I'll have to pick up this game sometime to see what all the hype is about. I'll probably wait until the price goes down though.

I need a strategy guide for that strategy guide i can imagine how hard it would be to find exactly what your looking for

Cool story bro.
yea, cool story.
I have Oblivion and Skyrim for my 360 and love both of them.
I also like doing the achievements for both Oblivion and Skyrim.

Pete! Do a video of your favorite games of all time!

@Temposama I have yet to pick up Zelda, my time needs to be devoted to Skyrim right now :)
Did you buy the art book? It is seriously te most amazing art book I own.
Skyrim is the first elder scrolls game I have played. And I must say this is my favorite game of all time. I really regret not one before.
I think the best part is looking up into the mountains and just seeing dragons flying around. its exilerating
Hi Pete, you know, I'm more to JRPGs, and Wow never caught my attention, so do you think Skyrim could be something for me? I've tried a little bit of Fallout, but it didn't grap me as much as most japanese games. Thank you
man ive been a subscriber since like 2 i think years ago nice vid man
I like it because every person you come across is a potential friend too!
ive never played any of the elder scrolls... but i've played tons of mmorpgs.. like probably 50+ different ones.. and when i look at skyrim i think to my self, whats the point? it looks like other mmos ive played, except its single player... so it looks boring to me, but i havent even given it a chance, do you think i should?

This is my first Elder Scrolls game and I honestly want them all now.
I have played for over 230 hours now and there is still heaps to do. This game is unbelievable.
I'd love to hear your thoughts after the honey moon phase.
Skyrim still amuses me after hundreds of hours. I grew bored with Oblivion pretty fast, but this... i could go on forever!
Love the hoodie Pete!
I'm sure you can remember when you played through this, Pete :)
From what I've played, I can't wait to get Skyrim!
I've played skyrim since sep. Of 2013 and it's march 13 2014 and still playing I'm level 60ish
i was loving skyrim, but then i had a game ending glitch that prevented me from finishing the main quest. i was about 40 hours in so i m hoping for a patch
I am also loving this game, Pete. I have just surpassed 100 hours played. This is nuts. I can't stop playing...! Help...
Dude I said the same thing! I started RPGs in 1989 w Dragon Warrior NES and this very well may be the greatest game iv ever played
Why I love Skyrim, It is my favourite game of 2011 because I had never played Oblivion and I am not a big RPG fan. I love it.
Lots of good info here Pete.
which city felt like rivendell cus i know whiterun feels like the city in rohan
