  • Apple debuted the next-generation iBook G3 at a press conference in Cupertino, California on May 1, 2001. The previous bold colors and bulky form-factor were abandoned, as was the handle, the latchless design and the additional power connectors on the bottom surface.
The resulting iBook was available in white only, and incorporated transparent polycarbonate in its casing. It was 30% lighter, and occupied less than 50% of the volume of the model it replaced, being smaller in all 3 dimensions. (Source: wikipedia.org)

Crazy how this machine really set the design language for just about every Apple notebook going forward to this day (until the MBA). I was proud to own one of these back in the day. The ability to burn cds and connect to the internet wirelessly was mind-blowing. I fondly remember making songs in garageband, making movies, and of course burning countless terrible mix cds (thanks Limewire) on this little machine.
Say what you will about Apple, but they pushed the boundaries of bringing creative computing to the consumer. They enabled millions of people to pursue creative endeavors not financially or educationally accessible before.

Interestedly enough, Apple seems to have returned to the white iBook design language for their recent (at the time I posted this comment) Macbook Air M2.

I had a Dell 600m with a centrino processor which had the WiFi and ability to burn CDs and DVDs, so I'm not sure how Apple pushed the boundaries.

This whas my dream laptop when i whas a kid, i loved this design and the first time i watched this keynote, i whas blown away! I wanted one so bad, that i made a exact replica, completely out of cardboard and paper, and it set on my desk, next to my macintosh classic, everyday i would look at my paper replica and told myself: one day i will have this laptop, and now i do, a fully specced out 900mhz model, in great condition as well! Even today i think its the most beautiful laptop ever made, even to this day, i like the 4:3 aspect ratio, so nice to type text on this machine! But my iBook G3 has a black keyboard with bronze media keys and arrow keys! Everybody who sees my iBook think i did a great job by modifying that keyboard.

You can tell Steve was unhappy when he was asked if it had a fan.

Watching this on an iPhone 7!!! Man how far we have come!! I remember the middle school my sister worked at in around 2002, had all iMacs and iBooks. That was my first introduction to Mac OS 10!!!!! I remember just looking at iTunes and burning cd’s!!! Wow I actually do miss those days and just excited to make my playlist and listening on my CD Player!!! I didn’t get an iPod until the 5th gen in 2005 so I remember what it was like before the iPod!!! I got my first portable CD player in 2001 since they didn’t trust me with an iPod and they were right as I lost a couple of my CD players but man was I careful when I got my 5th gen!!!!!

@1:00 Probably long before this event, Steve Jobs surely realized the importance of CD burning (as he was quick to add that in the 2nd update of the newly released OS X) and the positive effect it would have, on the success of a device like iPod, which he introduced later that year.

Jobs later admitting "We royally f*cked up" when they didn't make the CD-RW the default base feature.
The demand back then for burning CD's were through the roof, but people didn't want to pay hundreds more for that feature,
so cheaper PC laptops won out.
Apple lost a lot of sales to cheap PC's with built in CD-RW's. Apple quickly fixed this and launched the infamous "Rip/Mix/Burn" ad campaign which drew the ire of the music industry.

@NovaMerc77yeah the White iBook G3 is referred to “Snow” but the G3 can run Mac OS X 10.0-10.4 where some iBookG4’a can’t go to some versions of Mac OS X in G4 it depends on the year if the iBookG4 to see if it can downgrade to like Mac OS X 10.1 or 10.2 or 10.3 and Etc

One of the main differences between G3 and G4 is the optical drive. G4 had the slot loading drive, G3 had the conventional one. So you might notice that this presentation involved the conventional optical drive. (Among many obvious differences between the two models.)

Did it come standard with Garageband? And what year iMovie would this be considered?

    • @Samspianopage
      @Samspianopage 7 лет назад +7

Nah bud, Garageband wasn't released until about 2004/2005 in iLife 04 or something I think.
iMovie would probably be version 2 or maybe 3. iLife didn't integrate all the apps until 2003, you could upgrade to iLife 06 or maybe 09 (though that might need a G4 chip).
