Macworld 1997: The return of Steve Jobs

- At the 1997 Macworld Expo (August 5-8) in Boston, Steve Jobs announced that Apple would be entering into partnership with Microsoft. Included in this was a five-year commitment from Microsoft to release Microsoft Office for Macintosh as well a US$150 million investment in Apple.
Steve Jobs' presentation started with Apple's status report. His expression was very relaxed and has a continuous flow of thought. - Наука
The return of the Jedi
I had just thought about that, and I saw this comment first, I lost the opportunity 4 years ago xD

@@BrendanPJameswhat’s weird about this he talks about the savior of Apple
Absolutely incredible. To kick out 4/6 members of a corporation's board is simply earth-shaking and was a huge risk. This is up there amongst the ballsiest moves of American industry.
I mean, the company was 90 days from insolvency. Not exactly like they deserved their jobs.
@@leeartlee915has to be one of the winningest business bets made, just look, Apple is now one richest companies ever.
Presentation master classs..Absolute genius
Gil Amilio or Steve Jobs? Wich presentation do you mean?
@@cyber299 Obviously Steve Jobs.
4:48 It's fascinating how the entire audience cheered up so much by just seeing the photo of Steve Jobs
Yeah legend on screen
@@gokulk9370 Ultra legend
What a man. To speak so honest about the flaws of apple and to have the guts to make his greatest competitor his partner. I’ve never seen anything like that ever. The vision he had for what he did and what he wanted to achieve is just incredible. So there is nothing more to say than:
“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” - Steve Jobs
Wow I remember this time period very clearly. Hard to believe 20 years has passed and I have almost doubled in age. Life goes really fast, this was yesterday to me.
Time is kinda a funny thing. I didn't even exist back in 1997 but imagining what will happen with after next 20 years scares me. Btw how does getting old feel.
@@ashutoshkhuntia3346 It will feel how you want it.
And so began one of the greatest corporate comebacks in history
Now it has fallen backwards
Not “one of”, but absolutely the greatest corporate comeback ever
ZeroCool are you sure? Apple made almost 1/2 trillion dollar PROFIT last decade, 2010-19. There product line may not be as interesting, but they continue to rake in the cash like never before 💰
Apple become the first 2 trillion dollar company
@@alex6677 yes, but Jobs' comeback was incredible
11:24 was one of Steve Jobs' greatest achievements, launching the board to the sun and never looking back
30:57 lmao i love when bill's face comes on it's like they just put darth vader on the screen
I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Darth Vader huh
One thing about darth Vader, he is evil but everyone likes him.
Bill Gates was always a good guy. He just really lacks charisma
Man, he was a class of his own when it comes to presentations. RIP
The guy booing Oracle: Hero.
My heart burst in tears when every time I re-watch all those keynote presented by Steve Jobs. We miss him a lot.
A decade later and I still feel your pain.
But… “There is one more thing!”
I know i feel that way too
One of the most epic turn of events in the business history!!
It didn’t hurt that Office on Mac was 5 times better than it ever was on PC.
@@leeartlee915How so?
@@therainman7777 Have you used Office for Mac vs for MS Windows? Maybe I’m crazy but I always thought MS made a much better product for MacOS.
At 14:57 - "What bothered me years ago was when they (Apple) raised prices. It made me think that Apple did not understand the outside world." Nice to watch this on my $3.599 Macbook Pro in 2020.
There are $2000 MacBooks but you wanted the upgraded features. There’s nothing wrong with the choice you made.
He is a legend. He is Bill Campbell, The coach of Silicon Valley
I like how this video marks several shifts - including, in the midst of it, Jobs shifting from talking about Apple in terms of "Apple is..." to "We are..." at 19:55
I was a PC user back then, In 98 I started to work for this small company which used Macs. I was incredibly shocked as how easy to use this machine was. I did not have to beat it up to install software and hardware, it did not crash, I just turned it on an it did everything smooth.
And here i am still dealing with the gut wrenching BSOD
If Microsoft would have kept their Apple shares from 1997, they would be worth over $35.4 billion today.
That's only 2 percent of Microsoft's market cap
Jarvis Grazio that’s totally irrelevant
Crowd were right to be ecstatic, the way he eventually turned Apple around.
Steve Jobs was such an amazing guy.. few people at Apple could understand his vision and game plan..
Agreed. They could have kept the design though. The new phone looks nothing like an Apple product.
***** Looks defines Apple.
Bobby Chervenov Looks is not the primary factor for Apple, but it is important. Others seemed to have followed Apple's looks, but that's NOT what defines Apple entirely, but they do manage to have their own visual appeal that does set trends. But it's ease of use.
Oneness100 I definitely agree, the design of their product was in Steve Jobs era, Tim Cook doesn’t care about the design as the other parts of them device that’s why Johnny Ive left Apple because Tim Cook wasn’t interested in Design as Steve Jobs. Apple is a luxury branding and that’s why their products are so expensive even if Apple doesn’t have the biggest market share their products and their prices make Apple the biggest Company in the world.
But those who do understand are awesome
Steve was one of a kind. I never get tired of reading him, watching his videos; every time I learn something new. A business genius without a doubt.
Seeing Bill up there saving Apple reminds me of how funny the world is. The story of Jobs, Gates, Apple, and Microsoft has so many twists and turns. I think both companies really needed each other, and both companies were so successful and started from such humble beginnings, it's so inspirational to me. I'm going to do big things.
How are things 7 yrs later?
All The Best!!! Do great things.
Its not exactly something Id call inspirational though. Microsoft was facing a wave of antitrust lawsuits and many of their primary competitors in the home market (such as Atari and Commodore) had folded as the IBM compatible PCs became dominant.
They needed to save face by injecting funds into Apple.
@@zachariah7114 One of them is the largest company in the world and the other is the 3rd largest company in the world.
@@brettdawson3257 I meant how are things for op who said we was off to do big things.
Theres so much passion in that room
He had a Vision!
He came. He conquered!
He was the founder of Apple and we, here in this video, are viewing Apple being founded. Again!
I really love this spirit and speech skills of Steve
20 years ago, jesus I'm getting old
Extremely interesting watch, especially after watching "Pirates of Silicon Valley" and with Steve Job's accelerated fame. What a great story.
During this presentation, a drunk Gil Amelio was found taking a huge, steamy dump on Steve's desk.
One of the most amazing and useful videos I've ever seen for Steve Jobs.
It is a lecture on how save your company from the edge of chaos!
This partnership with Microsoft was an indispensable strategic move for Apple. Genius of Steve Jobs knowing when to compromise with an "enemy" because at that point in 1997 Apple was struggling to survive having lost around $1.5B for the preceding year.
It also benefited Gates, who was facing anitrust legislation back then .
A presentation masterclass!
Man the things he's saying in 97 still hold true today and are the reason why Apple was so lost without him.
Did anyone else watch this and think Apple's current board would benefit from watching this?
Matthew Stone Me
More so today, they have fallen back at this level sadly
I mean did Steve whack the board of directors at the 1997 Macworld? That's some Tony soprano level shit.
Leaves the scenery like a boss... high class!
That board is the absolute definition of a dream team.
Well since it's 2015 now, might as well reflect on what has/hasn't changed.
Changes: iPhone, iPod, iTunes, Swift, iOS, AppleWatch/watchOS, no more Internet Explorer, Tim Cook
Non-changes: Still great for "creative content" e.g. Xcode, iMovie, GarageBand, Adobe CC, etc., very common in colleges/universities, beautiful and elegant designs, proprietary
The last 2 minutes are so so inspiring.
Say what you will about Steve Jobs, but he was absolutely brilliant and died WAY too young. Tim Cook has done a great job at the helm of Apple, but it's still not quite the same -- nor will it ever be, no matter who leads Apple now and in the future. Steve Jobs is, was, and always will be .... Apple.
He was mesmerizing when he spoke.
RIP Steve. You changed the world in your short tenure here on Earth.
Yea bro
We can understand how much public needed Steve Jobs back at Apple by seeing that applause at the beginning, also no other tech CEO's got that much applause.
SJ changed the board and then change the company from a desktop to a mobile internet device company. What a vision
Seriously...Steve literally just made the blueprint for BB on how to recover from complacency.
The Microsoft segment was a full rollercoster lmao
*Return of the King.*
Nobody could do what Steve did. may be in another 100 years or not ever. It looks so simple of what he did but it's hard to find a guy with great common sense, great leadershipo and has so clear vision and so sure of himself and with balls?
That “lifestyle brand” thing Ellison said was probably the number one thing that saved the company. If they didn’t have that weird cult like dedication to the brand, it wouldn’t have been able to turn it around.
Brilliantly said. I used to own a custom built PC back at the end of 2008 with top-end hardware. Yeah, it screamed, but something went wrong and I spent the next year and a half troubleshooting it along with the store that built it with me. Never got fixed. In the end the store closed down. I'd had enough with the headaches, sold my motorcycle for £1,000 (couldn't afford insurance), bought a Mac August 2010 and am still happily using it to this day.
I'm watching this on my Intel powered Macbook Pro while syncing my iPhone playlists.
You've come a long way. XD
The world didn’t know what was about to hit them. Steve Jobs the comeback king.
Could we find a worse quality copy of this? I feel like its too sharp, vivid, and life-like for my eyes to handle...
I love how it feels like your watching WWE when the screen goes dark and your waiting for Gates to come up on screen.
And the world technology changed forever

I cried when Steve died and surely the world will never see a man like this.
"If we want to move forward... we have to let go of this notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose"
This is something a lot of cultish fandoms, in tech and everything really, need to hear.
If only Blackberry's Thorsten Heins had watched this back in 2011 - every overall strategy he needed to implement was already mapped out in this video.
Apple Taglines with Steve Jobs
"Creative, Think Different, Easiness for People".
Appla Taglines with Tim Cook
"Fashion, Luxury, Rich People"
I remember that Tim Cook really concern about the Fashion and Luxury in his speech at Apple Watch official Launch.
Thats whats killing Apple right now. Apple officially gay now. A far cry from its masculine roots.
God how I miss this man!
... cause a lot of times the people think they're crazy, but in that craziness we see genious...
Yeah, I am a fan of Apple. I've been using their products since 1977, I've also been using Microsoft products since 1977 as well. I've been trained on both Microsoft and Apple products. I've worked for two HUGE resellers selling to corporate and government sectors and I also have a degree in Finance. I was analyzing Apple stock as a potential investment. At the time. I just wish I had some extra cash lying around to do since some people owed me some money that i never got. IT's a long story.
The LEGEND 🙌🏻 no one can convince your competitors to invest in you and Microsoft was one of the biggest companies that time. Bill no need to do that at all. But the Genius Steve made it possible 👏🏻 hats off one of the best ever.
Actually it's the other way around. Bill's first product was a CP/M card with Wordstar for the Apple II. The Apple II was the first dual boot computer giving people the ability to use CP/M or Apple SOS.
The year is 2023, and I am watching this video on my iPad. Apple is more relevant than ever. The business world revolves in cycles that do not repeat themselves, but rhyme quite well!
I think they should do OK after this reorganisation.
As long as Steve Jobs stays onboard.
steve jobs is no longer with us........
We can only hope! I hope they release an update to Mac OS 8 soon, my new PowerBook is starting to feel antiquated. ;)
Oh boy can't wait to get a G5 in my PowerBook!
God do I love this keynote. I usually watch the anniversary keynote first when Gil Amelio brings Woz & Steve Jobs on stage, and you can just see the anger in Steve's eyes (in January 1997):
ruclips.net/video/QhhFQ-3w5tE/видео.html
Absolute shambles. Fast forward just 8 months to this keynote (August 1997), Steve simply references Gil at 11:23 (the rest of the prior board has resigned), and just drops the BOMB at 13:03.
Masterclass.
Legend is reborn.
To the people who say if it wasn't for apple Microsoft would be dead or if it wasn't for Microsoft apple would the truth is both companies would not of lasted if both companies didn't help eatch other the apple 2 had Microsoft software And apple helped Microsoft with some apps and other programs and apple allowed Microsoft to have iTunes on windows.......... I am a hudge fan of apple and Microsoft
*What a fucking goddamn legend*
33:42 the dude in red is having a bad day lol
Who was that guy who opened?
'Gil Amelio, please resign' aaaaaaand I'm laughing my ass off
Apple was at $7 billion in 1996, now it's at $160 billion. What a turn around.
8 years ago, Apple was at $160 billion. Now it's well over $2.60 trillion. No matter what, never give up.
As allways, an inteligent speech from Jobs.

truly epic
It's amazing how Steve influenced over so much people to become board of directors of apple. That alone is so powerful, to invest time and effort on a dying company
It wasn't dying, just went through few rough cycles
2018??
I wonder if they really knew how high they'd fly after making all these changes, and just HOW MUCH they would change the world?
Amazing
for all of you who don't know what you're talking about Microsoft on the behalf of Bill Gates and Apple on the behalf of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak took ideas that were on display from then in the late 70s from Xerox who at that were not only in the business of copying but they were also making computers. The GUI interfaces that we use on apple and Microsoft programs came from Xerox.
