  • At the 1997 Macworld Expo (August 5-8) in Boston, Steve Jobs announced that Apple would be entering into partnership with Microsoft. Included in this was a five-year commitment from Microsoft to release Microsoft Office for Macintosh as well a US$150 million investment in Apple.
Steve Jobs' presentation started with Apple's status report. His expression was very relaxed and has a continuous flow of thought.

Yeah, I am a fan of Apple. I've been using their products since 1977, I've also been using Microsoft products since 1977 as well. I've been trained on both Microsoft and Apple products. I've worked for two HUGE resellers selling to corporate and government sectors and I also have a degree in Finance. I was analyzing Apple stock as a potential investment. At the time. I just wish I had some extra cash lying around to do since some people owed me some money that i never got. IT's a long story.

God do I love this keynote. I usually watch the anniversary keynote first when Gil Amelio brings Woz & Steve Jobs on stage, and you can just see the anger in Steve's eyes (in January 1997):
    ruclips.net/video/QhhFQ-3w5tE/видео.html
Absolute shambles. Fast forward just 8 months to this keynote (August 1997), Steve simply references Gil at 11:23 (the rest of the prior board has resigned), and just drops the BOMB at 13:03.
    Masterclass.

you're right! he never did. The crazy people working for Apple did, who he saw as geniuses. But, you know, before his return those crazy people were driven in wrong direction by wrong people(amelio, sculley etc..). when he returned all he did was, he drove them in right direction. that's it! Apple is not about Steve Jobs, it's about the people working at Apple.

for all of you who don't know what you're talking about Microsoft on the behalf of Bill Gates and Apple on the behalf of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak took ideas that were on display from then in the late 70s from Xerox who at that were not only in the business of copying but they were also making computers. The GUI interfaces that we use on apple and Microsoft programs came from Xerox.

Presentation from GIl Emilio has all the reasons why Apple was failling: animations show up for no reason, colours inhibit reading and that pace on his voice made me ask one thing : Why is this incompetent CEO of anything? I wouldnt trust this guy to run a lemonade shop.

No doubt Jobs was key. But it wasn't only the cash Microsoft brought to the table, it was their promise to continue to develop Office for the Mac. This was pre iWork days, so that commitment was huge. It was basically a vote of confidence from a company that was very strong at the time, saying they believed in Apple coming back.

if you read the book you would know how it was. macintosh had another company that made applications for them. but they made a deal with Microsoft. and so Microsoft kinda did what Steve jobs also did he used them for their own opportunity. Microsoft company worth was 100mil compared to Apple at that time was 1,5 bil. but it doesnt matter. back then they worked all for the future for now. i think thats more importend
