It was the most win-win business decision I can think of. Microsoft didn't get broken up and Apple didn't go out of business. Both companies prospered greatly as a result.

You have the wrong version of the story. First off, the money wasn't a voluntary investment by Microsoft. It was a settlement for a patent dispute in which Microsoft was accused of violating one of Apple's parents. Still a win/win because it let both sides avoid a nasty and expensive court battle.
      1. This didn't prevent Microsoft from being broken up because the anti-trust case was specifically relating to Microsoft bundling Internet Explorer with Windows 95. Regardless, the very idea that Microsoft could somehow prove they aren't a monopoly by investing in a competitor doesn't make much sense because all it really proves is that you're so big of a monopoly you need to create the illusion of competition.
      2. Apple wasn't on the verge of bankruptcy, they weren't doing well by any means at that time but they had a lot of reserve cash to keep them afloat while they reworked their business plan. If this 150 million was the only thing "saving" Apple then Apple would have gone bankrupt later that year because they posted a 160 million dollar loss.

2 mins of silence for all those workers down there when they saw Gates on the big screen.
When Gates was around Apple couldn't do anything about Microsoft. Jobs was obsessed of Microsoft's growth. He really spoke some bad things about Microsoft. But Gates helped them. If this thing had happened to Microsoft, I am damn sure Jobs wouldn't have helped them. This shows how great and humble Gates is. I like Jobs innovative thinking. But, he was definitely not a good person. R.I.P Jobs.

Apple doesn't have nerds. Apple has 'rebels', 'revolutionaries', 'artiste's' and a host of other corny bullshit motherfuckers. The cornball bullshit gets no larger than the corn-filled shit found in their camp. Nerds don't give a shit about 'polished aluminum corners' and elegant design. Nerds care only about an open, free ecosystem be it on the desktop or in the mobile OS.
To refer to Apple users as 'nerds', cheapens the meaning of 'nerd'.

Apple doesn't simplify technology, they dumb it down. They take decisions that should and CAN be made by consumers and restrict them.
For example, try changing a batter on an iphone or adding an SD card to an iphone. In the Android ecosystem you have the choice if you want it, in the Apple ecosystem if you want to replace your battery, you have to leave it to the 'battery replacement professionals'? What's the point of that? Is it too complicated for regular people to do?

***** Im guessing you havent even used one. My friend despises apple, but he used one and is now getting one to use alongside his PC. They aren't that different, the only thing thats different is the architecture and software, its still a computer. I use it for its simplicity to efficiently produce high quality media production at a face pace, something PC's don't really have. Its not an amazing gaming platform, but its still an option. I use it for occasional games, while my PC runs main games. (though i use consoles for gaming). So you can't really bad mouth the Macintosh, since without them, computers wouldn't be nearly the same as they are today thanks to Apple.

I think a more accurate way to put it is, it gave them the chance to save themselves. The deal alone wouldn't sustain them forever, and the 2 products that made Apple what it is today were the iPod and later the iPhone, neither of which Microsoft had any involvement in. But of course Apple could never have developed those products in the first place if they had gone under back in the 90's, which Microsoft was instrumental in preventing.

You raise a good point. I'm not sure they would infuse Microsoft with cash. However there is a point after this where they did something similar. The first versions of the iPod and iTunes were only developed for the mac and used the firewire connection. Once they switched over to USB and released the windows software (a first for apple software I believe) that is when the iPod really took off. The iPod would have remained a niche product if tied to the Mac OS.

Chrit S, Linux is not Unix. GNU/Linux operating systems are Unix-like to varying degree (that is, not all of them are 100% POSIX-compliant). Mac OS X was actually derived from a Unix (FreeBSD). OS X's kernel (Darwin) had been under development since NeXT (NeXTSTEP, the precursor to OS X, was released in 1989), long before the first release of the Linux kernel (1991) and the first GNU/Linux OS (it fleshed out around 1992-1993). Consequently, Linux could not have been an inspiration for Jobs and Mac OS X: it simply didn't exist.

I'm here after watching the Steve Jobs vs Bill Gates episode of American Geniuses. Bill Gates was booed here not only because Microsoft was in legal trouble for becoming a monopoly, but also it was known that Bill betrayed Steve's trust by stealing the GUI and mouse concepts (which I think Steve stole from Apple's investor Xerox but the series didn't go into depth on that).
This was what triggered Bill to become incredibly philanthropic. He saw what the public image of him was, and he wanted to repair it.
Don't be annoyed by me sharing all this if it's already common knowledge to you. I just learned this and found the history so interesting!
