I recommend mounting a roll of paper to the top of your air filter for test spray. Then you can still use the suction to hold it in place but have exponentially more paper to test on.
Sure looks like that Cerakote has a good business model. They sell the training courses and then sell you all of the components to do the work.. Win/Win
Nice setup you built there including the line work, but long time followers all know with your OCD you will have those galvanized pipes above your spray guns taken apart and Cerakoted blue to match the air line by the next time we see them! 🤣
Have you run into a situation yet where there is a backorder or shipment delays getting a specific color you don't have in inventory? It would be a sizeable startup expense to have to buy any colors in bulk before you need to use them to prevent projects backing up.
Thanks for the video, Happy New Year!
Your living the dream, happy new year!.
Thank you! You too!
My thoughts exactly
You should 100% be wearing proper PPE. Going through the cerakote course that is something that they stress. Please put a disclaimer for the novice people that are watching to wear proper breathing PPE. Ceramic particles in the lungs are not good.
What a AWESOME set up Gavin.... Thanks for the tour!!
Living the dream man.
Very cool Gavin, very cool. Thanks for sharing this
I like the way you have your shop setup and I think you're diy vent box is so cool.
As always you sir are a thinking man and you have built a bad@ss setup! Congrats! Probably the best setup in the country
I think your shop is slick! I’ve been considering this as a second income. I’m not sure if I have any talent in it since I’ve not tried yet, but I’m considering a cheap garage setup to practice and see how I do. All I really know is I’m very interested in the whole process and love the look of cerakoted items
As far as timers go... Get an Echo Dot so you can set timers hands-free. Its only a matter of time before you cover the timer with Cerakote because you have it all over your gloves.
No matter you have filters, I hope that you don't cerakote without a respirator.
Very helpful video with just the right amount of info. Thanks!
Gavin, I would recommend High Temp powder coating tape. I used the blue high temp tape from NIC industries for awhile, but I now I much prefer a powder coat tape and I get it off of Amazon for much cheaper.
We Cerakote tens of thousands of parts per year and this is now my new favorite.
Breaker box next to a sink ??? Not too kosher.....
What about magnetizing your DIY spray gun holder so you don’t accidentally knock it over? Otherwise love the shop, looks amazing
Did you mention any where the over all cost of this set up?
Fantastic set up, I'm jealous
Gavin, excellence information and an awesome setup. However as a fellow Applicator with several years of experience please wear a Respirator for your safety everytime you are Applying Cerakote.
Most people don't seem to realise that organic solvents flash off at room temperature and are extremely bad for you, so the second you uncap the container you should be masked up with a respirator capable of dealing with the fumes.
Wishing all the best in the New Year!
Great content!
Appreciate your ambitious work ethic!
Lots of information thank you for your time
Nice and neat workspace
Thank you so much for this video. I have taken a lot of inspiration from this. The room with a patio door, the DIY exhaust and your overall OCD and cleanliness is super satisfying.
I wanted to give you one suggestion that I learned at a training course (not the factory). Use a magnetic lab stirrer from Apera Instruments to stir your bottles and get rid of the noisy paint shaker.
Well you can tell that the governing body in his township has not been out to do any inspections because there is no electrical inspector that would allow that main switch that close to a water source. And that’s just within the first 3 minutes of the video.
This 21+ years licensed professional HVAC technician agrees with your observation along with MANY other DIY things in his shop that I happened to notice. That was a 240 volt disconnect switch too, mind you. Not to burst his bubble but the "nerdy guy with glasses" is just like the "handyman husband" that can DO IT ALL and can't really do anything!
BTW
"It's hard to stop a Trane!"
As soon as he would have said he was a engineer I would have stopped listening too!
Sharpertek sells an ultrasonic cleaner that’s designed for acetone (or any flammable liquid) instead of water. It’s pricey but worth it.
Get your masking tapes off the window sill and out of direct sunlight.
Also, a large swivel in front of and over your spray area to enable rotating a hanging part is helpful, especially to avoid handling misshapes, and insure more consistent application.
Nice! Well thought through system.
Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year y’all.
Need to seal the sliding doors off too.
How did I not know you could Cerakote polymer items? Always thought the curing temps were too high for it.
Most poly gun parts start to fail at about 400 degrees
That’s a nice clean setup Gavin! Good equipment. After years of looking for a good affordable modern lathe, I came across your channel 3 years ago. Now, I have a PM 1440, and Atlas collet chuck thanks to your videos. Best Wishes and Happy New Year!!!
DO NOT BUY THAT OVEN. Light Armor refuses to communicate with customers regarding delivery dates, I have tried calling, texting, emailing. Finally my oven was delivered unannounced and left outside with a forecast of rain. Now Light Armor is refusing to talk to me regarding the issue. Take your money somewhere else
I agree to not buy Light Armor ovens. They use cheap Chinese parts and post "made in America". It's junk and their support and warranty is total garbage!
Will you be doing outside work? I need to have a few things coated.
Loved the video! I'm thinking about getting into this and your video was (as per usual) invaluable!
Nice setup you have!
Is the metering valve upgrade worth doing to your skat blast? i've got the same model.
Grts from belgium
Could I just buy your whole shop? On the cerakote website I’m guessing?
This was very helpful for someone just getting in the Cerakote business. Thanks for sharing.
Why does that oven door look completely warped and not closed flush?
Nice!
I just got finished with my training yesterday and it was great! I was thinking of this video through my entire training lol. Thank you so much for everything you do Gavin, it is greatly appreciated!
I can’t get over they charge you for bottom insulation when they should include that in the oven build also the hooks. They say creokote oven but no hanger u pay extra?
What did you use to make your LPH80 holders? That is exactly what I need lol
The only problem I have with Harbor Freight is I was recently told they were against 2A so I no longer go there.
great shop if someone wanted to cerakote sks parts would you sandblast them first.
Surprised is not AC filters in that air vent box... even w the foam on top.
You did a great job! I really enjoyed your video! The shop is really well designed! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you very much!
I've been shooting my own Cerakote on some of my handmade custom knives for a few years. I like your setup and I really need to get an air dryer. Got any tips for how to clean up small specs of trash in your finish? Despite all my dust and cleanliness precautions, I occasionally get a speck or two in the middle of a blade. Stripping and reapplying is such a pain!
Circuit breaker above the sink? 🤦🏻♂️
Great setup Gavin, Thanks Yet Again
I have a cheap Harbor Freight unit and did many upgrades. One of the best is a cyclonic filter. Plumb it in prior to the dust collector. You will increase the life of the dust collector I bet twenty times over. I use a 5 gallon vacuum cleaner from Rigid and in 3 years of intermittent use and disposing of over 50# of dust, I have yet to put in a new filter but service it sorta regularly. All the dust is collected saving my vacuum filter and motor.
get the iwata regulators for your guns thank me later.
Gavin,
Would you happen to know if, in absence of an oven, you can IR cure the Cerakote? I have an IR lamp for doing automotive panels (solvent based paints/clears). Cerakote couldn’t give me a definitive answer…
Excellent video.
One question...
What do you use for your SVG files for your vinyl? Do you create your own or did you buy them?
I see a couple of places selling the files in bundles so that you can use them as much as needed without having to rely on another company to purchase every time you have a firearm to camo...
Any info would be great...
Thanks much, and again, excellent video!
I did it on this budget, I used a 12$ semi clear plastic storage box, cut 2 glove holes in the lid , duct tape, 1 hole for shop vacuum 1 for air intake. 3$ Harbor freight rubber gloves, HF 15$ sand blast gun, 20lb of some aluminum media might have cost 30$, i think it was a HF 20$ spray air gun and 35$ cerakote w air compressor i had already. Not high end shop quality but it worked haha.
Great info, thanks for sharing!! Keep up the good work🏆
Very nice setup my cerakote methods have been crude so far hope to have a proper setup soon.
I am currently 6 months into my degree at SDI for gunsmithing. I specifically did this course so I could start my own Cerakote shop! I had already looked into those ovens, and will be using your promo code! I did some coating back in 2017-18 for two local shops that unfortunately did not make it. Once I finish my school I will be going to get certified. Thanks for all the detailed information! I like how organized your shop set up is!
Some kit to look for, I watched an automotive painting video. Guy had a spray gun the used a pneumatic take-off to run an in-cup stirring mechanism. He was spaying glitter. So like Cerakote needed to keep is stirred up.
So what was the entire cash layout to get everything started??? Ballpark number :) :) :)
why not wear a respirator while spraying?
Nice shop. Hire and electrician... ;-)
Plumbers and electricians mix like painters and flooring installers working in the same area. +1 for spotting why, would be cheaper to move the sink IMO. 👍
What’s your utv set up? I’m getting one this year with a plow and I’m looking for recommendations
Thanks for this tour. It was eye opening. I'm going to have to get really creative to fit all this in my garage.
anyway you could send me the dimensions of that filter box in your paint booth?
i asked the same id like to build one
The usps postmaster is going to be pissed you are using their "free" boxes for testing paint patterns.
My understanding was that once those boxes are used (aka you have received them as shipments with stuff you have ordered) that they become yours?
Otherwise, yes, if you go to post office and grab a bunch of them to use as cardboard stock, that would be an improper use.
Turning them inside out and using them with FedEx/Ups is another story ;-)
@@michaeldoe4805 certainly you are correct. Just looked like a brand new box.
yeah everyone can see those boxes are brand new and never used. Its people like @Gavintobe abusing the system that causes shipping costs to continue to go up. Not cool at all bro!
Man..... I envy your set up. You have given me some ideas for my set up.
So this is what it looks like to have an unlimited budget and space. Living the dream my dude, living the dream.
Great shop very well done !!
Wow I can do that. My hose is 5/16" with 90psi with filter. Nice setup.
11:40 - You have the red tip on your #2 air outlet, you actually mixed the hoses xD
Gavin is livin the dream
well done shop that will allow a good consistent job. a little out of my price range.
I saw a cool video of making a air filter/muffler for the air compressor intake. It worked really good too
Gavin you can add more air reservoir space to your already storing capacity by running 2 or 3 inch lines to all your equipment and then reduce to whatever size you want. It will help safe your compressor not running for long periods at a time and it will add more air flow as well to your equipment .
Pretty slick . May have to check into it myself
Happy New Year sir
You could make the acetone tank into an ultrasonic unit in the future as an upgrade.
Great layout, excellent utilization of the space.
Thank you!!!
Wow your shop looks great. All the best to you and your business ! 👊👍
amazing!!! Hope you have an even better 2023. Happy new year Gavin, Guy and the rest of the crew
Homie even with proper air flow in your booth.... Wear a mask .. what hell you gonna get cerakote lung... Even if you think it's all going into your filter box you are breathing the paints molecules.
Just curios when you cerakote AR15 .. do you really have to remove the black paint.. or can you sand blast aluminum or acetone would work removig the black paint?
I run my own shop in TX (Spartan Precision Arms) and you don’t necessarily need to sandblast the upper and lower since it’s anodized instead of painted. It is best practice but you can degrease/ clean with acetone and scuff with Scotch-Brite Red Scuff Pads.
Thanks for the tour, Gavin. An idea and a couple questions...
If you have trouble with dust from the floor, you can mist the floor down with water before painting.
How do you keep the spray booth temperature steady? What do you use for heat and A/C?
What type of spray guns do you use?
Temperature does not present an issue. I am cerakote certified and do this for a living. The moisture in your air is the main thing that gives application issues.
I have a Winchester 1897 at a local gun shop to be cerakoted has been there 2 years now, it that normal turnover time?
No. Typically turnaround time is a few weeks. Get your gun back and take it someone else.
That booth is great for at home I like that a lot.
Great tour as always. Thank you for sharing great ideas.
😀😃😄👍‼️
Wow! Dreams, I’m happy for you!
Looking good 👍
Thank you for sharing your experience
Nerd alert !!!
Man, you are the best! Cool video!👍
Nice shop!
Gavin thats awesome, glad to see ya getting it done
Should you thread a barrel that already has cerakote? Will it cause problems?
No problems there!
Great video Gavin! The shop looks very cool.
Lovely part of the world there.
Do you take any apprentices
I love all of it! Great shop.
Amazing setup thanks
Love the setup, awesome
Where did you get that cap plug kit to cap barrels etc?
You can purchase from Amazon or Cerakote directly under “Equipment”
nice set-up Gavin ...
