I need like a ten hour complication of the process being done to dozens of different firearms. That would make for the absolute best background video for any gun club lobby.
may be too late 67beaumont67, but metal substrates should see 250F.. 160-180 may not be enough temp to kick the catalyst. If you already did it at the lower temp, you will probably not see a difference. However in the long term, durability may not be as good. Another point I would change from the video, is using a high pressure air gun to blow all of the blasting media from the pieces after blasting, then clean the parts again. the video suggests blowing with the HVLP gun at much lower air pressure, just prior to applying the coating. Also when cleaning the gun, I suggest flushing twice with MEK,,and use it to wipe all of the surfaces clean. Then remove the fluid tip and soak it inside the cup with clean MEK, put the top on and leave it. I am not a fan of solvent cleaning, because of the disposal costs as well as the evaporation rates My process uses a 7 stage zinc phosphate pretreatment, which can replace all blasting of steel parts. The final stage is a hot rinse/sealer,, which stops all oxidation. Aluminum is cleaned, then blasted,as are plastic substrates.
I tried to call. I have a question about sequence. If gas out indicates oil and then it is cleaned again, why the additional step of blasting again? What makes the initial blasting no longer acceptable for surface preparation?
Using Cerakote H, I followed prep instructions to the T. While spraying with my series 80 Iwata my coating didn't look wet. I was 3-5 in away with 2-3 in fan with pressure at 22psi at gun handle. So I went back over the first coat within one to two minutes and then stuck it in the oven at 300 F. I went to the store for a couple of hours and came back and the coating had blistered. Did I leave it in the oven too long? Did I spray it wrong? BTW - This was my first time at using Cerakote. :)
I purchased a raw (already blasted) F1 Firearms build set. They said it was "cerakote ready". I assume I can just soak in acetone for the recommended time then gas out (as long as no oils are present) cool down then spray. Right on? Instead of soak*blast*gas out*spray
You CAN cure Elite at a lower temperature for heat sensitive parts, however, you will not get the full Elite benefits (the extreme abrasion & corrosion protection and hardness) when it is not cured at 300*F for 1 hour. Thank you!
@11:08 is is mentioned about using a spray gun with a metal cup. Is this important across the whole line of cerakote and what adverse effects can be seen by using a plastic cup ?
Yes, it's important to use a metal spray cup for all Cerakote products. Cerakote may react with the plastic of the cup and not apply properly. Thank you!
You can apply it to plastics just fine since it is cured shortly thereafter, it's just that if it sits for awhile in a plastic container it could begin to react with the plastic inside the container.
Cerakote I use a glass cup that is part of my airbrush set up when I apply Cerakote to some of my projects and it seems to work well , is this ok or would you recommend I use metal as well ? Thank you
I was going to take the cheap ass approach. Duracoat , alumahyde. After watching this .... Fine I will send my m16 build. You get what you pay for. 😄 lol
If i"m doing metal and polimer parts at the same time can I just bake it all together for 2 hours at 160-180 instead of baking the metal at 300 for 1 hour?
To get the best results from Cerakote, you would want to fully cure the metal parts at 300*F for an hour, and the polymer parts separately for 2 hours at 150-180*F.
Not currently, though you may want to check out our sister company, Prismatic Powders, and there is a plethora of color options (including Super Chrome with various clear top coats) at PrismaticPowders.com!
Not sure where you're seeing that, but it's a 5 star for corrosion on H-Series (www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/finishes/) - our C-Series (High Temp), however, has a 3 star rating.
Acetone is not a good degreaser for plastics.. it tends to melt more types of plastic than not.. I'd go with simple green or some ammonia based degreaser.. even dish soapy water will work but the water isn't as easy to evaporate as ammonia based degreasers
Yes, you would need to lightly blast it for proper adhesion, then sharpen after curing. The coating will not chip or flake on the sharpened edge if properly applied. Thank you!
Hey, I've been doing Cerakote for about a year now. I just recently started doing white (Bright white). But whenever I spray, it almost looks like milk, and runs extremely badly! It looks thin or something. I soaked my spray gun in acetone and cleaned thoroughly. I have tried many different things, just wondering if someone would have an answer for me!
You'll want to make sure the bottle is very well shaken, at least 5-10 minutes of solid shaking. We recommend a paint shaker to get the best possible results. If it continues to be thin after a solid 10 minutes of shaking, let us know and we'll investigate the lot number. Thank you!
Trash Panda on bright white, i e had the best luck by spraying the part enough to wet it, and not worrying about 100% complete coverage. Quick cure at 180 for 10 minutes and coat again in the same way. By the second coat I’ll have complete coverage and zero runs or dry spray.
Our C-Series for anything exposed to UV for long periods of time (rims) and our Glacier Series for engine components. Find them at Cerakote.com and CerakoteHighTemp.com!
You can find a local Certified Cerakote Applicator at www.cerakote.com/resource/locator/ - prices will vary by applicator and what you want done. Thank you!
thank you very much for such a quick response, was looking for a battle worn . and then to look like its covered in blood. still possible with air cure?
We don't recommend using anything to thin it out as it will compromise the integrity of the coating. You must mix it/shake it very well to disperse the solids (at least 10-15 minutes, a paint shaker works best).
You could try putting a couple marbles or screw nuts in the bottles and shaking them up. If that's not working, give us a call at 1-866-774-7628 and ask to speak to a tech advisor who may be able to provide more details. Thank you!
An old model builder's trick (Hollywood, special effects pro) is to put a few bbs in a bottle of paint. It works great. I started dropping bbs in all my OLD lacquered based paints, and they are still holding up, 20-25 years later. Another cheap trick is to tape the jar to the blade of a Sawzall reciprocating saw and using the saw to shake the paint. WATCH THE TAPE, as the saw loves to cut through the tape. If it starts cutting the tape, add more tape, and keep shaking.
Send us an email at technicalsupport@cerakote.com (with pics) and a description of what you did and they can investigate. If it's blistering and flaking off, it sounds like the part wasn't properly degreased and gassed out.
#Cerakote Do you or anyone know an applicator of Cerakote that has the licenses required to work on a registered Pre-86 ban full-auto M16? I've looked off and on for over a year and can't find one...
You might contact MAD Custom Coating (madcustomcoating.com/), Custom Gun Creations (customguncreations.com/) or Valkyrie Combat (valkyriecombat.com/) to see if they have the correct FFL for full auto weapons.
Just go to ANY regular shop and be present while they work on it. If you are there, and in eye sight, then no FFL is needed at all! It's a VERY simple loophole.
For any H-Series product, we recommend a 12:1 coating/catalyst mix ratio for a more gloss finish, though it will not be considered a 'high gloss' - Cerakote isn't a very glossy finish, though you may want to check out Gloss Black as it's one of the most glossy Cerakote options.

I feel like nobody does this lol. If they did there would never be a bad review on cerakote
You mean actually following all of the manufacturer's directions should give you perfect results? That's crazy talk.
Sorry if I missed it in the video, but what kind of respirator would be appropriate for the degreasing and spraying portions of this process?
Seems like a gorgeous product.

Your media should be clean. This is correct, just blow any dust off.

Yes, sounds like it was in the oven too long. At 300*F it should only be in the oven for one hour, 250*F for 2 hours.
metal parts and elite are 300 for only 1 hour
I have an H series engine in my prelude, so my question is, why no cerakote on car parts?
I purchased a raw (already blasted) F1 Firearms build set. They said it was "cerakote ready". I assume I can just soak in acetone for the recommended time then gas out (as long as no oils are present) cool down then spray. Right on? Instead of soak*blast*gas out*spray
Correct, if it's a blasted, raw metal part then you just need to degrease and gas out prior to spraying.
So Cerakote Eilte is unsuitable for temperature sensitive parts given that all parts have to be cured at 300 deg ?
You CAN cure Elite at a lower temperature for heat sensitive parts, however, you will not get the full Elite benefits (the extreme abrasion & corrosion protection and hardness) when it is not cured at 300*F for 1 hour. Thank you!
just to clarify, you do not do another acetone bath after sand blasting?

You can blow off the parts with air to be certain of no debris left on the part.

so did I understand that video correctly that we can now use simple green as a degreaser in place of acetone if so is it diluted or straight
Soak in Simple Green for 20-30 min then....Rinse with water or drip dry?
With Simple Green use a 50/50 mix of Simple Green Extreme and water and once soaked for 20-30 minutes, rinse with hot water and blow dry.
