    I'd argue that the best automotive clearcoats in a can are the 2K versions. Either Spraymax or Eastwood. Also worth mentioning is that the 2K products are legit toxic, so use a respirator unlike what you see in the video.

I have a respirator, 400 and 800 grit wet or dry sandpaper, plastic sheeting to keep my garage from getting covered in paint, adhesion promoter and sandable Rustoleum filler/primer and Duplicolor spray paint and Rustoleum acrylic lacquer. Thanks again!

    Before primer I would just sand it with 600 max, then lay down the primer and sand the primer with 800 max. The higher you go on the grit the less adhesion there will be, especially if you use a cheap primer where the chemical adhesion is probably not as good as with an expensive one.

      hey i was debating whether or not I Wet-sand the clear as high as 1500 because the rest of the cars panels would have come from factory and be slightly "orangepeely" as its not wet-sanded. How can I match a bumpers texture that I would be painting myself to factory paint?

    1500 grit is too fine for sealing the primer - use 1000 grit (or 1200 at the ABSOLUTE finest) or the base colour may flake/peel off!! Some people won’t go any finer than 800 for wet sanding primer 😅
    If OP is reading this, did you have any problems with flake/peeling months later?
    Cheers 🍻

    I'd wait at least 3 or 4 days before wet sanding clear coat... You need to let the paint harden really for a good while.. clear can still be soft for weeks after it doesn't fully harden as quick as you think

    I think you did a wonderful job. It’s looking great! I would only add an exhaust fan to this video and two 1K lights. The lights let you see what you’re doing better and they make the paint stick to the bumper better. And they dry it better. The exhaust fan is for the over spray and your health. Turn the fan at the right speed so it doesn’t pull too fast or too slow. The fan will be messed up with paint rather than your lungs. You did a fantastic job and you worked extremely hard. The outcome was fabulous!

    About how much was the total cost to paint the bumper and do you notice if it's any less durable than a body shop paint job? I'm wondering about paint chips from rocks etc.

  • @MP-in4or
    @MP-in4or 4 года назад +8

    So you forgot a very important item. It is not wise to straight up prime the bumper and paint the bumper by itself. The primer and paint are not flexible by themselves. Especially when temps change and the bumper bends. The paint will crack. It is critical that you use adhesive promoter that will help the paint and primer stick to flexible body parts. It will only be a matter of time when you paint starts to fall off because you did not use this. In addition you should sand the bumper with 320-400 before laying down primer. Primer has very big droplets. And the sand paper you use does not give enough teeth for the primer to grab. When painting the bumper you should use 600-800. That will give the pain enough teeth to grab and still give it a smooth finish. The paper you use does not give the paint enough teeth and will start to flake off.

    All of the DIY videos all of two things in common. They prime the entire panel they paint and they wetsand everything. There is no need to prime that entire bumper cover. The old paint is a good substrate to paint over in the condition it was in. Wetsanding is overly messy and only really useful for clear correction. One more thing, use a plastic adhesion promoter on the bare plastic parts and yet your best to use 2K products if you want it to last.

    • @rileymarsh505

      Elias Bargee if you have a new bumper, you need a little more prep. I'd start off using a scotch bright pad specifically used for body work equivalent to 800 grit to remove all the mold release, wash and wetland with 400 grit. Don't use solvent based cleaner in plastics because on some occasions, the plastic can absorb it. Find a water based grease and was remover, adhesion promoter or plastic specific primer, primer, sealer if you want to make it perfect or an epoxy primer, base, 2k clear. Stay away from lacquer, it sucks.

    I just uploaded a video about the "essential" prep solvent to use during your prep. I noticed he didn't use one and using it will give you the cleanest surface before spraying.

    The dealer that sold me my truck did the bumper like this and it started to flake off at the carwash. When it comes to paint do it right or dont do it at all.

    Your vid is cool, but my 2 cents you should hold the can abit futher from the object you are painting, which will cause a more even spray and less paint streaks.

    Ur good.. but I wish u use 2k clear coat. This would look like an actual good paint job if u did. I am a collision repair student and u used rattle can on small jobs like this. U can still re do it if u sand it with 600 grit. Make sure 2k clear coat, the one that has hardened on the bottom

    You can't wet sand metallic paints, has to be done after the clear coat.

    It is good to know how the painting works are carried out. But it is not DIY(Do it yourself job) , need elaborate setup . It is completely professional automated painting in Car manufactures facility,
    The car companies not at all give helping hand for customers for carryout simple denting and painting works in their authorized service centers . Charging enormously for simple tinker and paint works .For the same front Bumper painting works authorized dealer charges Rs 5000/. I think car companies definitely not spending more than Rs 5000/ for painting whole new car at manufacturing. This is the big drawback in owning cars in cities . Every car manufacturer must have at least one automated body painting workshop in every major cities and offer denting and painting work at reasonable cost . It is possible , they may consider , If available it gave more sense of security in owning car .

If it doesn't come out as nice as yours I'll be headed to body shop or maybe I'll have to take it to you lol. Good video. But I wanted to see how you were sand cause I'm a complete novice when it comes to painting cars. Ive only done furniture which I went sand but idk if it's the same process. We'll see

  • @georgespangler1517

    Don't use heat gun you want the paint to atomize to flow out droplets and you won't have to sand,

  • @georgespangler1517
    @georgespangler1517 Год назад

    So many experts that don't have a glue,, sand no finer then 800 are you won't have etching and always use adhesion promoter on all fiberglass and plastic, with 1500 grit the paint has nothing to grip.

      The color did turn out well. Unfortunately, I did end up applying a coat of wax versus using a polishing compound. Therefore, I do not have the sheen that I should have. But the color matches up well. And considering it's covered by bugs right now, it is not a big deal.

  • @robinwilliams3844

    Sorry about your luck but without use of adhesion promoter, you loose a lot of flexibility needed on flexible plastic parts. You really should have used epoxy primer as well. The use of high grit (1500) sandpaper under the primer will smooth out the surface loosing even more tooth needed on this type of material. The things you did wrong WILL affect your paintjob. 1 yr and your paintjob will be lying on the garage floor.

    This does not work as video described. When applying for the color coat, the first coat was okay. The second coat did not stick to the bumper. I used the exact same brand as the video. Not recommended

  • @TheOriginalUberGoober
    @TheOriginalUberGoober 4 года назад

    All shine should be gone from bumper before you primer or paint. Any shine is clear which will just block the base from adhesion and eventually peel and look terrible. Also use adhesion promoter prior to the primer. Overall you did a DIY job that will last about a year or two.
