No unnecessary music, no waste of time; totally, great editing and to the point of where things matter; hard working, and efficient. You are full of goodness. Thank you. The only thing you did not say is how long you waited between coats. But, of course that info is usually in the spray cans.

    Your video was awesome, it really gave me enough confidence to take on painting my fender!
    I have one issue though. Duplicolor doesn't have the color needed for my 2001 Avalon. I don't know if it's because it's an older car or if the color just isn't popular enough (the color code is 6M3 if anyone's curious).
    What brand of paint do you recommend I use instead? I don't trust myself to pick an alternative brand lol.

      I had the same problem when painting my 1988 Legend, which used an uncommon color. I ended up finding matching color code aerosol cans on ebay BUT the nozzles clogged and made a mess :( Duplicolor is the best I have used. Sometimes local auto paint stores can custom mix your color and put it into an aerosol can. I would try that before I buy generic cans from ebay again.

      If you can get the color matched paint to match your paint code, you’ll just need to apply some extra color coats, since you won’t be applying any clear. That way if you have to wetsand and polish which removes some material, yore paint will still be plenty thick enough. I’d try 5-6 coats of color total.

      Also, the color may fade or dull faster without a clear on top. The color matched paint is a lacquer, which is not uv resistant. The oem paint is most likely a single stage urethane, which is formulated to last for years. A 2k clearcoat will help protect the color.

    No one makes an "exact match" paint per the BC/CC paint code for my 2011 Impala (dark, _dark_ charcoal grey metallic) except for Eastwood at $25 per can. Could I use an off-the -shelf charcoal grey for the first 2 coats and use the expensive Eastwood for the wet coat? The decklid spoiler (dealer installed aftermarket) _also_ needs to painted in addition to the front fender.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  Год назад

      After investing the time to remove and prep the spoiler, I wouldn't risk mixing different colors/brands of paint to save 10 or so dollars. I'd only use the exact paint code for better end results and a better match. Be sure to use a 2k clear coat for long lasting UV resistance: amzn.to/43KbyMK

    • @brendabowman622
      @brendabowman622 Год назад

      @@6thGearGarage -- That's a completely reasonably answer... it's only 10 bucks. Now, I have another question about prep for the spoiler: the paint isn't faded, it's not flaking any clearcoat, it's actually _pitting_ down to what _looks_ like the actual fiberglass as if there was no proper primer applied before the metallic coat was applied. Do you have a video or a link to _another_ video that addresses the proper prep work for this type of situation?
      **ADDENDUM**

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  Год назад

      If the base is really rough, you can sand it down and re-apply more basecoat. This is called color sanding and often done on show cars and high dollar restorations. Then after more color is applied, the clear follows. Because most regular vehicles come with some orange peel from the factory, I didn't bother color sanding the base.

      The same thing happened on the Dark Blue Ford Edge you might have seen me repair in other videos. New paint was slightly darker than the 10 year old factory paint. The only other option in blending further into the adjacent panels, but that's next level when it comes to difficulty.

      Unfortunately no, as oem paint will fade over time from UV rays. Some professional body shops can mix the new paint to accommodate for this, but you get what you get with the aerosol cans.

      The clearcoat is Lacquer, which is all Duplicolor offered at that time. (that generic looking label was their older design.) Now they have a 1k clear, which will hold up longer. Or go for the Spraymax 2k clear for the longest lasting clear coat. I will add links to those in the description.

    Great video! I noticed, though, that you didn't use a drop cloth or masking of your garage wall or floor. How did you NOT get paint on the wall and floor without masking it off??

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  4 года назад +2

      Good question... there’s not too much overspray with such a small project and aerosol cans compared to painting some thing larger like a bumper with a spray gun. Also the paint is lacquer which dries fast, so it’s usually dust by the time it lands on the floor, which makes it easy to sweep up/vacuum.

    Since I don't have a polisher I was wondering about doing it by hand - and I saw where you did some spot buffing by hand so I'm going with that on the whole fender. But - do I need to lightly sand before applying the clear coat? I used Duplicolor for the base (Victory Red) but it just feels a little rough.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  3 года назад

      If you want to sand the orange peel, you should apply more coats of color before clear. Or you can apply enough clear to fill in the rough texture and then wetsand and polish the clear. It really depends on the amount of orange peel and how good you want it to look when it’s all done.

    really good video, better than a heap of others. • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  3 года назад +1

      I have only ever been taught to sand it down and apply another color coat. Depending on the color, you could maybe get away with just lightly sanding the surface with a higher grit whose scratched would be filled in by the clear coat... maybe 800 or 1000 grit? This isn't solid advice, just a best guess. I'd try it first in an inconspicuous area.

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  3 года назад +2

      Depending on the color, you may need to recoat after sanding. I would sand the color with 600 or 800 grit before re-applying the color. Then once you have a good smooth color coat, apply the clear. If you still have rough finish after clear, you can wetsand and polish as needed.
