Thank you for watching our prep video. Learning how to prep parts is extremely important and crucial to the painting process. If you don't do a good job in the preparation stage, your paint job will suffer. You will also create more work for yourself and possibly have to repair & paint the panel. Learning the proper steps and techniques will benefit you greatly.
We are showing you how to prep a plastic bumper and a metal fender. The process for each will be the same for all parts, with the exception of bare plastic. Of course, prepping a used part, or any other material like fiberglass is different. This is just for the most common plastic and steel parts. If you would like us to show you how to prep used parts or other materials, please let us know in the comments.
We're working on a 2018 Dodge Charger front bumper and a 2016 Toyota 4Runner fender. The process for each part is not entirely different. We just use less abrasive sandpaper for the plastic compared to the steel. Plastic is softer, so we don't go too low with the grit. Whereas, with steel, we do get a bit more abrasive.
You want to sand the entire panel completely. It's best to start with the edges and side of the parts and then move to the face. The term "face" just refers to the front side of the part. Most mistakes will happen on the edges because they get overlooked a lot. You don't want any peeling or reactions from the edges spreading to the face/front of the panel. Scuff the panels appropriately and get them ready for paint.
If you have damages or imperfections on the panel and the sanding cannot remove it, you'll have to use some metal filler or metal glaze. You want to fill in the scratches with the filler and let it dry before sanding it down level to the panel. We did not go over dents in this video, so if you would like to see that, let us know in the comments.
Stay tuned for our next video, painting in the parts in the booth!
We definitely have more videos on the way. So please, let us know in the comments if we missed something, or if you want to know more!

If I don't scuff before primer. Can I scuff over the primer for better adhesion or should I sand back down to e coat and scuff it? Please help. Thanks

That's a great idea! We might just make a pure ASMR video on sanding and painting.
