This is definitely in their top 10 of studio produced tracks. There are several professional orchestras that have performed this as classical sheet music (along with a few other LZ songs)! It is slow and methodical, which will take some fans off guard the 1st time they listen to it. The medley of sounds from violins to cello to piano, all backed by the smooth acoustic pattern by Jimmy is astounding quite honestly! Even Bonzo gets in line by playing softly at times, using brushes! They were never afraid to take chances and do something new, and this track is proof of that! Enjoying your reactions, keep em comin!
Always gives me a buzz to watch you young ones grooving to the music I grew up with. I'm guessing you guys are about the same age as my kids. My daughter often raids my collection for this period's music. The 1970s was definitely a great time for me to grow up in. I'm so happy you've found the delights of Led Zeppelin.
@@SnoBear626 Its funny you hear it that way, because as conceived, The Song Remains The Same was in instrumental lead-into the Rain Song....one long continuous track. It was later broken into two songs and lyrics written for TSRTS.
In the movie and the soundtrack album of "The Song Remains the Same" this song is preceded by "The Song Remains the Same". They flow into each other flawlessly. It's about 16 minutes of pure musical mastery.
This is about the stages, or seasons of a love relationship, an absolutely beautiful song. Sometimes a beautiful slow song hits the spot, & Led Zeppelin definitely make some beautiful ones.
In 1972 we were lying around smokin some Blonde Lebanese hash, some Thai stick, drinkin beers and listening to this album. At that moment in time, all was right with our world. Too bad with YOUR love of Zeppelin you were not there with us. I am truly sorry for that.
Yes, people today don’t realize what else was going on like smoking weed or hash etc and then listening to zeppelin was an experience like no other.👍👍😂
If you were expecting a rocker but ended up with a ballad…it will definitely affect your mood….that said, this is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written and composed
The chords to this song are like nothing else. (Apparently, Page wrote it because George Harrison said he would like to hear something softer by them). What a gift to us it is.
I’m so so SO glad you are listening to The Rain Song.!! ❤❤❤ Now get your minds totally blown by watching the 2 songs live 1973… The Song Remains the Same / Rain Song. ❤️❤️❤️
Love this song and your reactions! Ten Years Gone (1990 Remaster) should DEFINITELY be on your list to listen to. The guitar work is incredible, and is my personal favourite by Led Zep 🔥
Carol, listen again, and focus on the utter beauty of that acoustic guitar. It’s some of the most exquisite acoustic playing I’ve heard in popular music, along with some of David Gilmour’s acoustic playing. And the synth Strings by JPJ brings so much lushness to the arrangement. Bonham’s tasteful use of brushes on the drums is perfect. And yes, the lyrics by Plant are poetry. If you listen again, you will know not to expect “bombastic” and heavy music, so you can better enjoy it for the gift it does bring; sheer beauty.
The first chord is the same as the opening chord of The Beatles' classic ballad, *"Something".* Jimmy did that as an homage to George Harrison, who wrote The Beatles' song, as it was George who inspired Jimmy to write this song. George was a big fan of Zeppelin, but said to them one day, *_"The only problem with you guys is that you don't do any ballads."_* So even though that wasn't true (I guess George never heard, "Thank You", or, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"), the challenge was on, and this gorgeous ballad about rain and seasons and love was Jimmy's response, with an opening shoutout to George for inspiring its creation.
Try, *"One Summer Dream",* by ELO. The studio version. And make sure to not hastily turn it off if you don't like how it starts out, because there's a 50-second intro which is nice, but is not the song's main melody. It totally changes up at that point for the rest of the song, and wow, is it hypnotic. I think it's the most beautiful composition Jeff Lynne ever wrote. it's not as dainty as, *"The Rain Song",* but more mesmerizing, IMO. And really, it's not a song about a romance, but rather, any nostalgia your mind can conjure up...particularly memories of summers past. Let me know what you think. If it's not your cup of tea, I won't be offended.
@@Cosmo-Kramer You're not making this easy :-) ELO's "One Summer Dream" is another favorite song by another of my favorite English rock bands. Same with the Beatles' "Yesterday," and others. Led Zeppelin is much more acoustic than some people realize. That balanced with the Rock and/or Roll (Ned Flanders) songs is what made a LZ album a wonder to listen to.
The way the instrumentation in this song is constructed, it simulates a storm. The rain begins gently, starts a few drops here, then there, then more. A sudden crescendo claps, and a heavy downpour ensues until the storm smoothly moves away and the sun comes out at the end.
The Song Remains The Same & The Rains Song played together, live from Madison Square Gardens (1972), are so amazing. They are Plants fantasy story from their movie, The Song Remains The Same, was filmed at those 3 concerts. I highly recommend doing both together live, you’ll love it.

Hey, it’s OK if Carol digs the more up-tempo hard hitting Zeppelin. What’s fantastic about Zeppelin is you will get everything from the most light and beautiful to the most heavy and hard hitting. There is something for everybody! But I bet you if Carol listens to this two or three times it’s usually the soft ones that take a little while to grow on you and this is a fantastic composition by Jimmy Page and some great string arranging by John Paul Jones. Not to mention the usual fantastic vocals and drumming of Robert Plant and John Bonham! Love ya!❤
