Jimmy was inspired to write this song after hearing that George Harrison (from The Beatles) said that the problem with Led Zeppelin was they didn't have any ballads. He even quotes the opening chords of Harrison's song "Something" in the opening here. It had a working title of "slush" due to its soft rock leanings. This song had its beginnings in Jimmy's new home studio and I love how he kept the acoustic fret squeaks intact for added intimacy. Jonesy used a Mellotron Mark II and Steinway piano while Bonzo did indeed use brushes and sticks. This song is moody, melancholy, and triumphant all at the same time. It is a perfect example of Led Zeppelin's ability to create songs of "light and shade". Absolutely moving and gorgeous.

JPJ is the orchestra. He is playing all that on a Mellotron. I've always interpreted this song as the seasons of life. He is young in the springtime. As he gets older, he is in his summer. When he gets old, he felt the coldness of his winter. When you die, a little rain falls. "Upon us all, a little rain must fall."

i've always been fascinated by retro-tech. (dad was a computer service guy in the 60's and 70's, when computers were big and primitive). the way inventors accomplished things before modern technology was so ingenious. the mellotron used tape loops of recorded musical instruments, so that when you pushed a key, a corresponding tape would engage and play that note. it was like having an orchestra at your fingertips. people of earlier generations were just as crafty as we are. they just had simpler tools to work with, and they made the most of it.

It's not ony that they're great musicians/vocalists & have some great songs, it's that they have sooo many really great, iconic songs. So many that are so good that you can't pick which masterpiece is the best. There are other great bands, including The Beatles, who also have a lot of great songs, but something about LZ just makes them hard to beat. So glad you've discovered them.

As you said, this is the fifth album you guys have checked out. There are several more and each has multiple songs that are undeniably 'great'. The discussion of what their "best" song is inevitably becomes an almost comical exercise because there are simply so many truly amazing songs...and this one right here absolutely belongs in that discussion.

Growing up listening to all of the great music from the 60's and 70's I never thought much about how great it was. I guess I just took it for granted because there was so much of it out there on the radio, stereo, etc. I never realized how great it was at the time until i compare it to how music has changed so much (for the worse) these days. I don't know what happened but nothing today comes close.

The "orchestra" sound is JPJ on a Mellotron; JPJ also on all keyboards and bass. "Upon us all a little rain must fall." Beautiful.

Page designed this album to be played in order. That is...Song Remains the Same, followed by The Rain Song and so on. Light to shade as Page described it.
    Immaculate is the perfect word...
Y'all be drinking' da Led Zep Kool Aid😉
Thank you for playing this...we played at a friends funeral in high school...it was Immaculate.
I enjoy listening to your reactions very much...I'm a newbie to your channel...I like your quiet, thoughtful, opinions. You are true audiophiles, and I'm glad I found your channel in the myriad of reaction channels out there!
    Peace, out!

JPJ played a Mellotron for the violin effects and is credited with the piano part as well. The style of the piano does remind me of Nicky Hopkins who has played on dozens of songs you may have heard.🖖🏼
