I Fell Back in Love with Mega Man X3...

  • As nostalgic as Mega Man X3 is for me, I've grown detached from it over the years. Once I removed those nostalgia goggles, I found myself not having much fun with it anymore after having countless other games under my belt. I ain't getting into a "Why it's good/bad" debate because I don't care about that stuff. My personal reasons for falling out with it have zero correlation to what's commonly criticized about it.
    As per tradition, when I'm not exactly feeling all that good in life, I turn to a Mega Man game to unwind and reset myself. Recently picked X3 back up after all these years, and suddenly found myself enjoying it like I did when I was a kid. Fast forward some more after refreshing my memory with some speedrun tech, and now... I'm slowly becoming enamored with this game again, considering tech like Neon Jumps have a lot more usage compared to X2, and the weapons are better than what I initially gave them credit for (I didn't even know Tornado Fang disabled an enemy's hurtbox for about a second, for example).
    This video's more or less a sample of what I've been up to for the past week, as I've been improving my skill level in X3 on my actual SNES (as you've seen, I'm playing on the Super Famicom cartridge because english X3 is too goddamned expensive). Given I was already familiar with Neons due to X2 (I was just bad at doing them consistently prior), it only took me two days to fully master them here, so it opens up the window of opportunity for more fun shenanigans.
    If you're confused about how the hell the mini-boss melted in like two seconds, it can be combo'd through its i-frames. So the Neon simply gives X the right height to get in, spam as many Frost Shields as you can (this can easily fail if you mistime the air dash after the Neon).
    Now, for info you might be wondering about:
    like I said above, Tornado Fang disables hitboxes (like how elemental weakenesses in the Zero/ZX games does), so any shenanigans you've seen with X jumping through enemies is because of that.
    If you're wondering why the third screwdriver enemy didn't spawn, it's because if you time the Frost Shield and dash jump just right after the second one dies, the third one doesn't spawn, giving you enough time to switch to Tornado Fang preemptively.
    ...Also, yes, before you comment, I know the Zero Project exists.
    For those wondering if this video hints at a Weapon Master for the game, no. Don't be hasty. I'm not confirming anything here. This channel is still on indefinite hiatus for my main projects until announced otherwise.

It was the last classical format, it added many new features into the game like the variety of ride armors, X-armor upgrades, secrets like the Gold Armor and getting the Z-Saber, the ability to use Zero for the first time, and of course it added greatly to the story and brought back one of the greatest X-villains of all time....and I ain't talkin about Sigma.

      @commandervile394 8 месяцев назад +1

      Probably because it was a downgrade from X-4, which (while had terrible voice acting) still had fully animated cutscenes and voice acting. It was naturally the next best thing to come after X-3 so when X-5 came out people expected a lot more... Story-wise it wasn't really the greatest either, starting out the game by fighting Sigma again for the millionth time in an intro stage is rather lackluster, they should have introduced new villain and plot (besides Dynamo). Although what they did with Zero's side of the story was really good and having him fight X at the end was legendary stuff.
      The game wasn't bad (and I don't hate it), it just wasn't as good as those that came before it. That's my take anyhow. @@d7603

  • @MarMaxGaming
    @MarMaxGaming 8 месяцев назад

    My least favorite thing is the maverick intros are completely missing when you reach the boss room, so it feels like they have way less personality since they aren’t as animated. Basically they just do more damage throughout the game, it’s the toughest of the first 3 for sure.
    Nice moves, jumping after the charge shots! I didn’t know about that tech.

    • @MagnusZero
      @MagnusZero  8 месяцев назад +2

      Possibly, but I never tried it. And if it can, it'd be a very niche use for vertical segments. It's completely out of the question for the regular 100% speedrun category, though, considering that's Z-Saber hyper charges needed for the boss rush.
      EDIT: Yes. After testing, you can "technically" infinite Neon, but only if you don't have the Z-Saber (it has end lag that can't be cancelled unless you touch a wall or take damage). Which, for speedrunners, is still a no-go. And even in casual play, that can be a turn off. The only area worth doing infinites is Doppler 2's infamous vertical segment (since the speedrun strat with Neons to skip it in optimal time requires damage). But outside a speedrunning setting, it's still not worth it since a little bit more patience with normal Neons gets the job done, and you still have the perks of a 100% arsenal to play with.

    Honestly X3 is still a good game, it's just got a lot of weird aspects; awkward stage layouts, music has hits and misses ( really good hits tho), the half implemented Zero, underused mechanics like the chips and ride armors, and the plot is just kinda there in relevance to the whole minus a couple details. Rest of the game is still an SNES X game, so it's up there with the others.

    • @amso7169
      @amso7169 8 месяцев назад

      i really disagree with the awkward stage layouts, i think it’s some of the best in the series. they are wide and vertical, making a ton of use of X’s movement, something that other X games either don’t do as well or straight up neglect (looking at you, X1 and X7)

    • @ItsNeonZX
      @ItsNeonZX 8 месяцев назад

      Fair, to me it seemed different compared to other games with more open stages where it feels like speed/reaction times comes into play when going forward; X1/2 felt like the stages were more on a horizontal plane, to where I'd be constantly moving and dashing forward and I'd just have to time my shots to hit whatever appears in front of me, or use a different weapon if it's an enemy that doesn't die in a charge shot or two. X3 felt like I'd have to stop my momentum/what I was doing to have to fight any enemy regardless of what abilities I'd have on me due to their HP/ability to keep me from progressing (this mostly applies to vertical segments with enemies inbetween or late game where some enemies have armor), not killing the pace but forcing me to stop what I was doing to spam shots or time a dash over them if it's something smaller. Plus a lot of enemies have "ha gotcha" mechanics like absorbing your shots, the mentioned armor, HUGE contact damage, or just ducking under your shots to keep you from dealing with them while moving. X3's weapons aren't always the most helpful to deal with the enemies either, but Neon Tiger's weapon helped with the vertical sections.
      All of this is most likely because I'm impatient as fuck when playing and love speeding through stages when I know what I'm doing, but it's the style I've always liked tbh. Not to say I don't like more vertical stages, Flame Stag is up there with some of my favorite stages because it has a good mix of both vertical and horizontal platforming. Just felt like a lot of X3's stages were more "boxed in" compared to other games if that makes sense, but that might just be how I feel due to the vertical layouts.

      All right. Here they are. Note that the scanlines are optional, since they're not for everyone. The games still look great with in raw pixels depending on your HDTV:
      [Output Resolution]
      -2560x1440p
      [HDMI]
      - Frame Lock on for V-Sync (for a no input lag experience)
      - Colorspace: RGB Full
      [Interpolation/De-interlacing]
      - Vertical Filter: Sharp
      [H.Sampling]
      - Preset:
      - Disable Interlace
      *NOTE: Make sure to manually adjust your picture's positioning in Scaling/Cropping in case it's not centered or cutting off anywhere.
      [Post Processing]
      - Scanline Beam: S. Gaussian
      - Scanline Strength: 1
      - Mask Off
      - Gamma Boost +1
      - Color Boost +1

    I'm not one to go get the upgrades in mega man x so this one wasn't an issue for me. The fortress levels do suck but all the fortress levels suck in mega man x so it's not something I hold against this game
    Except x4 that one had good fortress levels

      X4 out of all games? i’d say by far X4 was the first one to really drop the ball with the fortress stages, since the ones that are there are incredibly short and easy
      X3’s are honestly some of my favorites, though i also enjoy X2’s and X8’s quite a bit (even if the latter kinda lacks a lot of… actual level content?)

    How do you start with the password already prepared? I though all the numbers going to be 1 when you load up the password screen?

    • @MagnusZero
      @MagnusZero  8 месяцев назад

      The game remembers your last password after a reset. It forgets everything only after you completely power off the console. All SNES Mega Man games with the password system are like this.

      @@MagnusZero how are you able to do the triple jump at 2:28 ? I tried to do the same thing with the same upgrades but couldn't replicate it, is it something you do at a perfect frame or a different region version of X3?

    I’ve always preferred X3 over X2 to be honest, I won’t say X3 is perfect by any means but I’d definitely rather play this over X5, X6, or X7.

      What's with X4? Don't know why megaman fans are so fond of X4 other than any other... I'm a new fan btw! Just got to learn about the world of megaman and its fanbase.
      Played the first megaman (classic) then got X6 for the ps1 from a classmate at school at the time.

      X4 is a very well-rounded experience, while it’s easy to critique nowadays for not being particularly innovative mechanically (outside of zero, which *is* a very commendable addition) it doesn’t do much wrong either in terms of gameplay.

    In my opinion this is my second least favorite megaman x game because it’s harder than the first two. Don’t know why this is the only megaman x game to not have a fire maverick boss fight but whatever.

    i have a question, why didn't you change the damn music of the level you are playing?
    I hate to say this (and i really do) but the worse thing about this game is the music.
    the first and second had slightly better music so why the music of this game is so terrible.
    megaman X3 is the only game I'd hate to go back to for this only reason.
