I'm in the 6th month of learning and perfecting recipes. Getting to the label stage and that is proving to be hard too. ;~P I still really haven't completely solidified a recipe. I am very close but should I be closer? I have been testing 5 waxes and SO many wicks, and colors.

In the planning stage for my soap/body products/candles and really doing my homework finalising collections/look/branding etc. Looking to launch around March 2023. I have a background in Sales so already in talks with few stores for wholesale and have a plan for direct retail sales. Been working on all this for about a year as my plan is to do this fulltime. So over working for Corporate companies.

Wanted to start same businnes of soap/body products and candles since 2014 when i first lost a job after working in a corporate for 5 years. Realizing how replaceable you are. I started at home. Small but soon fear took over and i went back to work. Again here i am at the same door 7 years later in another corporate giving me the boot. Now. Again too scared of failure to do this. And i was good at it. I pray that 2023 will give me the courage to let me go for it.!
Here is to you for just going for it 🎊 👏

So many of these points I've experienced first hand. I started as a side hustle hobby a year before the pandemic. Started with soap and moved into candles and now I'm expanding into other bath and body products. I still make more candles to order at this point but, I'm gearing up to be able to have stock on hand already made after figuring out what my popular sellers are.
The most important point in this video is "don't grow too big, too fast". I picked 2 fragrances per scent category, picked ones I personally like in each and picked 2 jar sizes. I still run those 2 jar sizes but have expanded what I put in them. Solid color candles, layer color candles, themed candles, etc... I've even had success with unique candles in things other than jars (but still safe for candles) that involve a bit more work. It pays off though... being unique definitely makes sales. Best selling candle lately has been my coffee mug candle with molded wax coffee beans covering the top. I place all those coffee beans by hand and while it does take time, it's been the thing people point out attracted them to the candle in the first place. These little unique things, even if time consuming, can make sales. As long as you're paying yourself for the extra time investment with your price!
Second personal point... while it is a side hustle just for money... customers will know if you have a passion for it. They instinctively know if you genuinely love making what you do. If you are only in it for money, it will show in the little things.
Lastly, starting on Etsy is okay... I did. I am only just now, nearly 4 years later, moving to Shopify as my main platform. I plan to keep Etsy open with different prices purely to keep up with their fees compared to Shopify. Shopify is still a time-intensive process to set everything up, especially if you're particular on aesthetics like me. Haha!
Whatever you choose, just know what you are capable of and know where you succeed and where you struggle. Knowing your weaknesses is just as important as your strengths. There's always someone with the opposite that can help you be balanced.

This video is awesome. I was watching your previous one from 2021 and saw this new one recommended so swapped over most of the way through. It's cool to hear that you've learned a lot even in the year or so between videos. I decided this year to stop struggling with managers/corporations and use my marketing degree to help myself find a job (er-side hustle to begin with haha) that I don't dread and that lets me express myself creatively-making candles and soaps. I'm completely new to the crafts but have a lot of free time at the moment and as you referenced, the second best time to start is today. I just made my first test-candles today to see how difficult the process is overall/how much time it can take, but it just made me want to order more materials and keep trying out new scents and troubleshooting haha. I'm glad I watched this video before I got too far ahead of myself! You freely gave out lots of information that is easy to take notes on and helps to create a more compressed and direct plan. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!

“You miss 99% of the shots you don’t take.” ~Wayne Gretzky. Greatest hockey player of all time. Great quote and same principle as what Jordan said. And as I type this, I see you included another great Gretzky quote. That’s actually what made Him a great hockey player, his ability to anticipate where the puck was going to land. He said he studied old games and realized the puck generally always landed in the same places. (He’s right, I watch tons of hockey).

What an absolutely AWESOME video ! So much great advice, I think I need to watch several more times to grasp it all!! I have had a small handcrafted leather business, that I will call "mediocre" as far as sales and growth. So much of your advice will be helpful for me in my business. I have honestly been thinking of making candles and melts for a while, and what prompted it was customers stopping by my booth at the markets. They all say " I just love the leather smell". I actually bought some oil a while back, to see how it smelled, and its fairly close to the real thing. My thought was to try to build on the customer's experience of their sensory experience when they came by my shop. Long story, but my thought was to sell candles and melts to supplement their experience with the leather fragrance ! And maybe expand from there. Just wanted to share my thought of how different crafts can overlap and support other crafts. Somewhere in all my video watching and surfing, I saw coasters for candles ! I thought how cool is that. Something I already make that can be used for the candle side. I have embossing dies and can stamp my logo in the leather as well. The creative juices are flowing !! hahah Thanks ! Fred

I think it’s easier to lower prices, than to later, down the road, have to increase my prices. This happened with a supplier I use and personally, I thought it was not how customers should be treated. I’m going to build a certain amount into my pricing so shipping will be lower. We already have a LLC, but I had a hobby and then decided to turn it into a business. I will have traditional candles, but also a product that is truly amazing (I’ve received a lot of compliments only) niche product. I chose Shopify because Etsy takes 30% off each sale, which I think is pretty crappy. I can take my time to launch because I’m trying to choose elements that are the best at the lowest cost. I’ve gone through so many waxes since I started and now have the perfect wax and vessels. Thank you for this video! 😊

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  Год назад

I agree with you on etsy for sure. And I guess my overall point on pricing was that..... if you can't get sales to get going and start getting traction, it's all for not. I think people do underprice nad under value sometimes. But I think it's much more common to overpriced starting out. At least from what I've seen. Not because they numbers are wrong. But Brv not enough overall to bring down their costs.
I think sometimes my comments on pricing are misinterpreted, which could be how I delivered it as well. My main point is to consider all puget factors not just costs to produce.

So I’m in between having a business and planning. I already have a side hustle tumbler business, and this year I started a permanent shop at a Renessaiance faire. I have been trying to decide what I want to add to my shop, and came up with candles/wax melts. 90% niche based with my scents having names that fit faire, ex. Pirates, Vikings, Celtic, fairy, dragon etc.

Another great vieo thank you. I am a hobby candle maker who ran out of kitchen space (and friends already had enough of my candles), and so decided to do my very first craft fair last December. I love making candles in moulds, all sorts of shapes and sizes and was convinced Xmas tree shaped candles with a lovely xmassy fragrance would fly off the shelf. I sold one :-( However, having got over the trauma of it all, I have realised I started at the wrong end of things. I was trying to sell what I liked, and had way too many options and variables. So I am at reset, where do I go from here, or even do I continue from here? Your video will be invaluable, and any additional good old common sence and expertise I can gain I am sure will help.

Hello, soon to be hobbyist I hope. I'm really only looking at attempting wax melts for personal use. I've been watching so many videos and reading material that contradicts eachother that my head is spinning.
I'm really torn between Golden Brands 464 or the IGI 6006 mixed with IGI 4625. I know you did a video on 464 wax but I'm not sure if it's the same as the aforementioned. I also watched your beginners wax melts video in which you used Pro Blend 650 for wax melts. I live in Canada so ordering from US suppliers is pretty expensive right now if I need to start from scratch. The Canadian website I looked at doesn't sell Pro Blend 650 and I'm not sure what is comparable.
Anyway, sorry this is long winded. Love your videos. And I've been on your website and saw a few candles I have my eye on. Take care 😉
