  • Probably one of the most intriguing styles in professional boxing was the Cus D'amato influenced Peekaboo style of Mike Tyson.
Although it worked well for him early in his career, this is a fight style that isn't for every fighter. Let's discuss some of the pros, cons and concerns that accompany this type of set up.

@@WorldClassBoxingChannel the only thing I would say is in Tyson's prime he was KOing guys in 1-3 rounds. In great shape yes, but became clear after round 6-7 he just was not the same fighter. I'm thinking this style of defense, high energy, very taxing, will have problems for the long haul of the fight.
Not to say this style is bad, it isn't. It works great for a shorter fighter who is built like Tyson. But perhaps it puts even more pressure on that guy to get in and finish that fight early.

I always loved the Peekaboo style of fighting. As a guy who's 6' and fought heavyweight I utilized it when I was younger as, like you said, it allowed me to cut distance easier on taller fighters and it took away from their height and arm length advantage. I was able to get inside of them and hit them with shots to the head and body from angles they weren't expecting by constantly changing levels. I think when utilized correctly and by someone like Tyson it is the hardest style to fight against. It is also the least sustainable because like you said you have to be in terrific shape to utilize it correctly and most fighters can't sustain that level of cardio, especially heavyweights, as they get older. Thanks for the great breakdown of the style.

    • @michadebicki6534
      @michadebicki6534 5 лет назад +14

Frazier's style was also exeptionally hard to fight against. He was luring everybody with his rythm like ilusionist and then changed thempo of his whole body movements (head movement, arm motion and bob&weave) He was able to break his own rythm or change it many times during single round. That was HORRIBLY disturbing and uncomfortable for his opponents. Add his masterful defending skills, parrying, obviously head movement and deflecting power of incomig punches in many different ways, insane stamina and you truly had to fight against a deceptive as hell beast in the ring. Many people think that he was just a brawler with great chin and punch and no special technique but that's not true at all, because his style was highly considered, highly technical, sophisticated and hard to pull off.

Coach, as you’ve stressed, the peek-a-boo style may not be suited for all boxers. It’s a better fit for shorter, more aggressive fighters. If I recall correctly, Cus D’Amato developed this style for Floyd Patterson. It’s interesting to note that of all the D’Amato champions that used this stance, ( Patterson, Jose Torres, Tyson ), only Tyson utilized the shifts you’ve shown to cut angles. Techniques are always evolving. Thanks for a very interesting analysis. Very informative.

Yes high energy but also brilliant strategy, because Tyson would make them miss, thus they would quickly lose heart and he would shift into positions where he could hit and not be hit, which makes a fighter less tentative on exploding their power shots.
Cus knew fighters that fought the ‘traditional’ way were always apprehensive about throwing their power shot for fear of being countered. The evasiveness and shifting allowed his fighters to punch powerfully with impunity from an angle that was completely safe. He knew that you don’t necessarily have to fight like this all night (Tyson proved this with 20 knockouts in 2 rounds or less). Once a fighter has missed too many times, been hit with tremendous power from a position in which he couldn’t counter, his confidence plummets catastrophically and he looks for a convenient place to lay down on the canvas...
So yes, it expends energy but it turns the fight into a sprint instead of a marathon. Tyson only went the distance a handful of times but he was so well conditioned he could do that in his prime, but most of the time he didn’t need to anyway because the tactics and strategy of Cus were so clever that he could easily dispose of opponents rapidly.

Great breakdown. I've always leaned more towards this style since I'm 6'0 and have the same frame as Tyson. Also have a football background where I'm usually in a squared stance

I always find the pee-ka-boo style wind shield side to side slipping to be faster and more efficient than the traditional slipping technique.
Being 5'11 myself , I love this style. All the shuffling and shifting , I do that alot to create new angles and pressure my opponents. I kept hitting top and and bottom , body shots proceeded by headshots , and back to the body, constantly moving up and down and shifting angles , making it hard to guess where my head is gonna be next.
    The key is constant movement.
But the strength is also its weakness, because you need really good conditioning to use this style.

0:40 farzir style : bend waist bobbing /bowing /make guy punch down at him
0:55 mike more straight up /in squad position
(move hands to make him hit me )
Hands uo / Hands come down into rip cage /geneate more power and speed
    1:15 mike slip and weave
1:20 frazir bob(in straight line I think /just going down /straight down or lft or right ) (make me punch down ) counter with lft hook /
    bob and roll
1:40 he was down lower /bend his back and waist more
    1:45 mike : more infront of u /squad /move his head (windshield wiper /u letter )
1:53 It was effective becz was very deceptive movement
Becz when dip : fake body shot /go to head
2:20 take his head across line of attack
    2:33differnt jabs:
2:55 effective style :cutting if ring /cut distance
    Use feet as well
Becz he was squared up more/
    He get u towards corners/ropes
    3:25 Then he will switch/shift
    3:35 pivots
3:43 shift to left (stay ortho I think !!)
3:50 frazir :didnnot use feet and shifts as much
    He woul bob weave more
4:05 cons of this style : have be in
constant motions/with head and feet and in great shape
(hands or feet have to be moving )
    Becz Iam more squard off
(Or hands down /faster head movement jiri ..)
5:20 other styles like philly Iam already half target
    Not as much head movement
5:50 mike style headmovement is defense
6:10 If hands up is my defense then Iam punching bag
This is why called sweet science
Learn to Parry /roll / catch punches
    /use shoulders
Block punches /weave / (bob :bob is just going down ) dip /slip
6:45 and mike didnt parry /block punches /
he relly more on his head movements /and footwork
And I need to be in great shape
    To move head /shift feet
    7:05 pros: cut ring /cut distance :: (becz I move head )
7:42 cons I am squared up /more movements
8:05 philly :rt shooulder low /half man
8:50 shoulders /that foundation all great uses /but some expection like mike ..
9:32 shorter guy /use this style
But have to be in great shape /becz I have to be in constant motions

I liked the video, but I would Hazzard a guess that the reason the other stuff is more represented is more come than the fact that it is all great technique. It's just also what's more universally taught, and for good reason. Cus putting up three world champions with peekaboo is definitely food for thought though.

I'm trying to apply this to my MMA especially to get inside to get the clinch it's been working good so far the straight up posture is good to stops me from bending and getting knee'd in the face and keeps good posture when I shoot takedowns

Ok. I live across the river from Catskill and my trainer teaches the DaMatto style. Peekaboo. Great video. Demonstrates the context of tactics and the peekaboo style ignores the advantage of a longer reach. A situation that I do not enjoy. Since I am in great shape, at least after starting boxing class, the DaMatto style fits for me

Tyson, not sure anyone beats a motivated Tyson in his prime. If you could take 10 of the best heavyweights ever and have each one of them list the others in order who they wanted to fight first I guarantee Tyson would be at the bottom of each list.

It's interesting, because in boxing you can only be hotness above the belt. In must Thai they can go below. So being square you are a bigger target in your bott half too. So you would have to adjust for must Thai. Either it wouldn't be applicable, or you would constantly have to be dancing, you couldn't be at one place more than a second, otherwise, even with headmocemnt, your base is still stable enough to attack. So you would need to be a cardio beast. It would almost be like, combining the light feet of Ali's style with the head movement and squared stance of Tyson. Constant footwork. You wouldn't have to be technical, at least in your footwork. Suddenly I see the value in footwork. With footwork, you aren't even able to be hit. They say "dance" around your target. I'd take it a step further, and literally dance, take up all styles of dance. Because it's ALL Footwork! And it's with a partner. I think of this often but I never here it spoken about. I wonder if any boxers made dance a serious part of their routine. Ironically enough, Lomencenko took a couple of years off boxing to Persue his mandatory Ukrainian dance... he Is arguably the best in boxing period right now... well there's a clue if there ever was one. I think Duran used a lot of salsa music in his training. I love seeing the similarities in different arts and sports.
