    abusus usum non tollit
    "Paul refuses to circumcise Titus, even when it was demanded by many in the Jerusalem crowd, not because it didn’t matter to them, but because it mattered so much that if he acquiesced, he would have been giving the impression that faith in Jesus is not enough for salvation: one has to become a Jew first, before one can become a Christian. That would jeopardize the exclusive sufficiency of Jesus.
    To create a contemporary analogy: If I’m called to preach the gospel among a lot of people who are cultural teetotallers, I’ll give up alcohol for the sake of the gospel. But if they start saying, “You cannot be a Christian and drink alcohol,” I’ll reply, “Pass the port” or “I’ll think I’ll have a glass of Beaujolais with my meal.” Paul is flexible and therefore prepared to circumcise Timothy when the exclusive sufficiency of Christ is not at stake and when a little cultural accommodation will advance the gospel; he is rigidly inflexible and therefore refuses to circumcise Titus when people are saying that Gentiles must be circumcised and become Jews to accept the Jewish Messiah."
    -D.A. Carson, The Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World, p. 145.

    Step back and realize we use the word church because the English translations for some reason used the German word church. ‘church’ may be fine in German but in English it is interpreted 1st as the building; 2nd as a corporate organization- point being it is not properly though of as the local fellowship of followers of Christ so where our forebears may not have thought of it that way modern Americans do.
    Understanding the reference is to each local fellowship we all are commissioned.

    I don't believe the Great Commission is for the Church today any more than I believe that signs and wonders are. Where in the text does it even *suggest* that it is for all believers for all time? The apostles received their commission and carried it out as I understand. Nonetheless, this passage has been used (misused?) to inspire/finance much mission work and to browbeat believers about their evangelistic inadequacy.

      What about II Corinthians 4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 4:5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
      Not to mention II Corinthians 5 where we are given the ministry of reconciliation.

      While not drinking to get "drunk", Jesus clearly drank wine... Would you make those same comments to your Savior? The pharisees did, calling him "A glutton and a drunkard" for eating and drinking with sinners (Luke 7:33-34).
      I am pretty sure Paul's admonition on not causing someone to stumble does not mean we should do everything out of fear not to offend a hypersensitive legalist mindset. Paul is talking about provoking someone intentionally, not about living our lives in constant suffocation that someone might be offended at what we do.
      Comparing someone's love for the taste of beer to lusting after women in swimsuits (or tempting someone to lust) is a very false analogy. One is not a sin, the other is a clear violation of Christ's commandment. Bread, beer and wine are not sinful, but gluttony and drunkenness are (Proverbs 23:2; Ephesians 5:18).

    • @ShownMercy
      @ShownMercy 10 лет назад

      ***** If Paul was willing to never eat meat again, where does that leave you? This is a love issue, not a legalistic one. But the love has grown cold, so what should I expect.

    • @jh6658
      @jh6658 10 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the response :)... However, I do think you are stretching Paul's commandment to a degree not intended by the Apostle.
      I think we would both agree that in Paul's social surroundings meat was being sacrificed to idols. Christians were intentionally eating that meat in front of other Christians who thought the meat was unclean. Paul said, in actuality, there was nothing wrong with eating the meat but he would never intentionally eat that meat in front of someone he knew would be offended ( Corinthians 8).
      In the same way, I am quite sure that Wilson would never drink beer in front of someone he knew would be offended. Having bottles of expensive draft beer as decoration in your office is not intentionally going out of your way to offend someone brother... I really think there is an important difference.
      We are commanded to not intentionally make someone offended, but we are not commanded to never do anything that might possibly make anyone offended. If you do not make that distinction, how could we do anything in our lives? People are offended by all kinds of things. Someone might be offended that I wear casual clothing to my church. What should I do about that? Should I really change my clothing then? And if I dressed up in response, someone might be offended that I dress up too formally... Paul's command has to do with intentionally flaunting something around someone who has a specific struggle. It's not about constantly taking count of every possible thing that anyone might be offended about. Flaunting that you eat meat sacrificed to idols was wrong, and in the same way, flaunting beer around someone is wrong. Having a bottle collection I really don't see as the same issue.
      In addition, brother, I would encourage you to have a different view towards alcohol. The Lord's Supper was originally instituted with the use of alcohol, and alcohol can be safely drunk with moderation without any side effects on the mind (drunkenness, of course, is wrong). There are a few people who have genetic dispositions for addiction, and in front of them, of course, we should not drink (as Paul commanded).
      Anyways, I do not think Wilson is unloving because of the collection of bottles in his office :). Just a thought for you to consider, even if you disagree in the end.
      God bless!
