The solving of the composition problem with adding the trees, making it more like a U-shape - was cool. I spotted the same thing and didn’t know what to do and then saw you fix it. That will satisfy thank you.

at 11:24 , on the palette, far left , 2 of the 3 gowns are visible , feels like a dress designer has been looking for these unique shapes, shades and colors , “ it’s the way the colors lay , --> I had backed up to see the “” exquisite color shade match that you use on the right building in the painting, feels like “” metalisized concrete”” ! ! ! Michael this painting , this end painting is the “” Excellent Beautiful Painting “” that you foreseen and spoke of prior to completion. To me it’s the right side, building color yet mixed with indirect light and shadow that “” Propels “” this great painting. “” Michael, you’re painting here is a new level of creativity, had to come see all again 🔍

14:58 transition of color , ‘ when you felt the color of the sea and changed it. I think you mated the buildings unique “” aura “” with the new color of the sea. The draw to a “” zero point earlier in your reference wouldn’t be as alluring “” without “” the height , length and presence of the bridge , you mention it’s necessity. I think this is a “” new creativity of a beautiful experience “” ❤️ ( gotta search the city now ) , Thank you Michael

I love how "reducing" media and palette, as with your watercolor sketch, enriches the creative aspect.. like when Georgia O'Keeffe took up charcoal and "regrew" her art from there. Or when Picasso made a bull from a bicycle seat and handlebars. I call it the Burnt Stick School, which need not be literal but acts to remind us that limits enable form, that expression need not stem from nor wait for access to special materials. Developing one's kit affirms a commitment to mastering a particular medium, so that's another aspect of limitation facilitating form.

Thanks again for the insights, both of you produced properly pleasing paintings. Like you, I wanted a new watercolours palette a few weeks ago and stumbled across the Mijello range. They’re airtight so keep tube colours fluid for a little longer. The 18 well version comes with a clear plastic tray to give more mixing room. I don’t use it for mixing, instead I fit it “upside down” to hold my brushes in the lid when tramping to/from wherever. No thumb hole but with my climber’s digits, I can’t use the ones in the plastic trays.

Really enjoyed your urban painting and the suggestion of detail that you incorporate into them. the treatment of the light area of the second painting must have been difficult to separate tones. I did the Nocturnal Painting Comp in Norwich (England) - managed three paintings and people seemed to enjoy them. tried to keep it simple but sometimes i get drawn into detail which i need to avoid. Another great session by you especially in the urban setting - the last painting looked like you were on a mountainside.

Nothing wrong with your first painting, but does sorta fail the 'would you want to hang it on your wall?' test. Second one looks great. One technique I use when painting walls is to put 2 or 3 colours on the same flat brush. The colours don't have to be wildly different, but it does help to not make walls look so slab-like and it also softens the impact of the windows/doors you paint on after. Might not suit your style, but worth an experiment?
