- John Singer Sargent without doubt is one of the most popular and accomplished artists of any generation. His skills with the brush and paint are exemplary but behind that obvious fact is his ability to simply Draw well. His draughtsmanship was nurtured and he worked very hard to be at the top of his game, but never wavered in planning carefully any project before him. We are looking into that aspect of his life's work..DRAWING.

Thank you for this! But you really need to do another video on the crisis that the rejection of his magnificent Madam X portrait created in his life.
The hypocrisy of Parisian “High” society over a painting that depicted a fallen strap off the shoulder of the evening gown of a young, beautiful, proud and confident American woman was just too much for the French to bear. And its rejection was a devastating blow to both Sargent and the woman “Madam X”.
In short, Singer and his portrait career in France, was cancelled.
The money he had just spent on his new Parisian studio, all wasted, his future commissions, all evaporated, his future in French society was just completely gone.
His friend, in a letter, wrote that he was worried about Sargents mental health, when he dove into a rocky shoreline and hit his head on a rock.
Fortunately Sargent went back to England, and stayed with some friends, painted the local landscape and began that incredible painting “Carnation, Lily, Lily Rose.”
But that whole experience nearly wrecked him and is worthy of its own video.
Terrific video! Thank you!
Sargent's productivity is mind boggling, because he and his colleagues weren't confronted with all these useless distractions we hav to deal with almost every day! And in our time it is going to get even worse. "Every era has its own art" so while I and all the other current artists are being RAPED by A.I. I try my hardest to remain pure at heart ( my Art loving heart) And when I am able to sell my art I try to support the truth loving segment of our society under threat! Have a nice day every one!
Thank you for this inspiring glance at one of the best artists ever! I just discovered John Singer Sargent recently, his art is breathtakingly beautiful!
"To work is to pray". Wow. What an unbelievably inspiring video. Thank you!
10:52 for those who are curious
Great synopsis! I recently picked up a book " John S. Sargent-194 Master drawings" and it is epic! I think his use of middle tones is the magic of his art.
I can't get enough of these fabulous presentations by the Gammell Lack Institute of American Art. The commentary is precise, uncomplicated and the voice is so pleasant and easy to hear. The finest of art too.
true, the wording and the tone, also the pacing just as pleasant as my favorite poetry
Thank you for this wonderful presentation. Sargent's productivity is mind boggling, especially considering that his virtuosity remained consistent throughout his career.
INSPIRATIONAL-A TIMELESS REFERENCE-THANK YOU!!!!!!

Wonderful & thoroughly enjoyable video on my favorite artist! I can never get enough of Sargent! Many thanks
This video basically outlines all the necessities of good art, regardless of medium or style. Fantastic.
Excellent. JSS is a favourite of mine.
👍талантливо и впечатляет. Берегите и развивайте главное не мешать, и помогать.
Sir, I feel so indebted. Three words: thanks thanks thanks!
The ideas that enabled him to succeed, principly, "..can never sketch enough!". His views ...there's no subject that shouldnt be drawn..Portraits showed personality ++ Thank you for this!
Love the video, I love how elaborate the description and images are on it.
Jesus, another artist to my collection
Brilliant! As usual a brilliant artist dwarfs every other field or profession.
FABULOUS !
Thank you for this, i'm going to be studying his methods from now on. Great work
Thanks for this great presentation.
Terrific!!
I’m a big fan of Sargent…and this shows why. I’m of a similar thought and approach even though I’m self taught. I went from high school to the pros, and never looked back. Except for the schooling, Sargent and I are much alike. Great video.
Wonderful draws!!!!
Wonderful!
Wonderful, thank you
¡Muchas gracias por el video! No conocía la obra de Sargent y quedé impresionado.
This was so wonderful - I can’t wait to watch it again! JSS was so vigilant in his artistic efforts…what he produced is such a treasure for the world. Was recently in Boston for the MFA Singer exhibit and it was joyous. We also visited the Boston Public Library to see the murals and oh, how glorious they are (and that building is incredible). Thanks for sharing the information about these murals as well. Beautifully narrated, enough time to really look at the drawings as they are on screen….just so well done…I love your videos and am so grateful! Now, so generously inspired, I’m off to grab my pencil, lol!
We appreciate your comment, Thank you !
Inspiring.
That was awesome
Awesome talk
Great, thanks!
Great video thanks.
Very good!
Thank you, fascinating,
thank you for that!
brilliant thank you !
He certainly painted his subjects, male and female, to look good! You can’t blame him for that, it was a commercial business he was employed in. But there’s no doubting his talent.
Brilliant artist, brilliant video. This video is not only well put together, but the narration is at the right pace (unlike the horrible tendency for new videos to be narrated at the speed of light). Thank you!
Many thanks!
Bravo!
Thank you for this insightful reflection on this great master. One feels immediately uplifted by that confidence and utter beauty of the merest strokes that portray so much meaning and depth. The charcoal portraits alone feel like a collection of personal friends as Sargent takes us by the hand so gently and into the soul and character of each unique individual. Your comparison with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel seems most apt🌹❤️🙌🏼👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you for your comments, much appreciated
Thank you so much for your videos. By compiling them you have made an indentation of yourself as the best art history program online. 🎉

"to work is to pray"
Can’t emphasize enough the importance of middle tones-key to success of drawing, henceforth painting.

Great suggestion!
Salamat po
I've seen other versions of "the prophet in white" @13:00 before. I didn't know he inspired them. Somethimes the figure in white is painted as a woman.
6:55 has Metal Gear Flavoring
HA......I SCOFF.......SARGENT TRACED EVERYTHING HE EVER DREW - MANY WERE THE TIMES THAT PEOPLE WOULD RUSH INTO HIS STUDIO AFTER HEARING MUDEROUS SCREAMS, ONLY TO FIND SARGENT HOLDING HIS SUBJECT DOWN AND TRACING THEIR LIKENESS ONTO A CANVAS!!!!!!!
LOL!!!!!!!
SARGENT WAS A WONDER AND ONE WHO WORKED HIS ARTISTIC GIFT INTO A LFE OF GIVING US SOME GREAT ART TO ADMIRE - BRAVO TO SARGENT AND TO THIS VIDEO - GOOD JOB!!!!!!!
Hello sir, can you make a video on Edmund Leighton? I love him
i would never paint a portrait of a subject the way they see themselves. I would only paint them in a way that shows their hidden selves or their true selves.
Search beautiful movement @6:13 I could dance with her! 👌🏽

what is he means when he mention industrious there?
It means 'Hard-working'
He had loads of help from his mum
Great artists but couldn't brake free.
Am I losing my mind, or is the narrator’s accent go in and out from English to American?
You, are, losing, your, mind.
You're spot on. I noticed this too. Like what in the actual f is going on with this guy's accent?
I noticed it too and had to rewind it a bit to check. I was thinking maybe he edited after a few months on a different continent?
A.I doesn't know the difference yet I suppose
Artificial intelligence
Saturnino Herrán painted as skillfully and dramatically as Sargent.
I have the highest regard for Sargent but to compare his work to Michael Angelo's work ( cough, cough ) surely you jest. Let's keep it real folks, there is no comparison.
Brilliantly put together for a brilliant artist. Great narration far above the rest that are out there
Yup, I agree. This robot has a pretty decent voice.
