The VW Golf R might be the most refined and best all around vehicle available in the hot hatchback segment. This one has a tune on it that pushes the power to 370HP, is it better than the Focus RS?

EddieX I have the 17 R w the APR stage 1 manual. This car is in a diff league now. On 100 octane I hit 3.9 /0-60. That's insane ,this is the nicest and most enjoyable car I've had for the money to enjoyment ratio. I've had lexus. Infiniti G. And Porsche. This car has more kit in it than any of them and it is now a rocket. I ATE a 5.0 today and he pulled up after and Asked. " what the hell IS that?!" I told him. He couldn't believe it. He said " I never saw a car just keep pulling like that. It left me for dead. ". We pulled over and BS'd a few. He is a fan now. I showed him all the crazy stuff inside that I am STILL learning how to use. But test drive to anyone who doubts and this tune IS MENTAL!!! N
Great comment buddy! How much power does your stage 1 produce? I'm getting a manual mk7 with 360hp soon. Normally, this thing would go up to 60 in like 5.1 (with stock power), so I was wondering how fast the tuned one will be like. 3.9s sounds insane!! Excited to hear your comments on this.

Target demographic ? I have a 2015 Golf R and I'm 68 y/o. Who's the target ? I like the fact that it's a "sleeper". The Focus looks like a cartoon, same with the Civic.

Id have a stock Golf R over a Focus RS. Any day! No word of a lie. I've just ordered a Golf R. The Ford wasn't even a consideration, they are junk. Contenders were M140i, Suburu STi, Audi S3. Went for the Golf R. The drive with DCC and DCT are sublime and the cabin is gorgeous. So dynamic to drive and the AWD system is just brilliant. Haldex has came a long way!!

I've got a 'stage 1' tune on my DSG 2018 R and it's a rocket. Can't wait to upgrade the downpipe and intercooler to take it to 'stage 2'. It's a great car, and I'm glad that I've bought it. My favorite car so far.
I think the R is a great daily. Awd, quick, roomy for a hatch, can come in dual clutch for traffic. Just a cool rare car

Golf R is basically the baby 911 Turbo. If you have the money, Golf R will be your best choice.
Golf R has engine in front and practical rear seats & doors. 911 is engine in rear with less utility for more than two passengers. Very different driving dynamics also. I'd say the Golf R would be a preferred daily driver for a 911 owner.
no, my RS3 Audi is the baby 911 with a 175 MPH top end OEM.

I remember when the GTI used to look significantly different from the Golf/Rabbit and the R version had a subtle different look than a GTI. Now they all look the same to me.

I have the same car with a stage plus tune. Car shocked the crap out of me. First pull i was amazed. I have a fbo e85 18 wrx. The golf r is so fun and tuning capabilities are very good.

I have a mk7 Golf Gtd it has a stage 1 tune with 230BHP and 380Torque
I’m going to trade it in for a golf R and I honestly cannot wait looking forward to 4WD car with more power and some nice sounds out the exhaust
Sam i did that last year swapped my tuned GTD 60 mpg for an R300, power is way better and 4wd no traction issues .Just about living with mpg shock 28ish, but would never go back its in a different league mate.

Great review as always! I've always felt like most VW cars look too much alike like the year prior (not too innovative) but this one has a slightly more aggressive look. I like it, looks good. Question, how is the headroom for "taller" people?..how equipped is it with electronics like sunroof or blind spot monitors or heated seats, sound system any good or navigation?..
Overall for 40k...you have to love VW bc for that money I know a few other more powerful cars I'd rather spend that money on.

I got the later mk 7.5 Golf R.
Also, stage 1 at 370 hp 500nm and a dsg tune. It is awesomely quick. The only down side is... I don't get many takers with their V8 e.t.c.
They just keep on driving. Guess they don't want to be put to shame. lol
So true. My WRX got so many takers. Traded it for a Golf R 7.5 and now just crickets. Hardly any takers. So quick at stage 1. Will be getting the DSG tune in a couple weeks.

EDDIE seriously you need to review more reachable cars like this. More people watch videos with less expensive vehicles because theyre the cars that we average joes look at. Get rid of the s4 and get something interesting and average priced. So much more interesting in I think 80% of peoples eyes.

I daily my tuned MK7 R and its amazing, no issues.
I am biased and have Owned a 2+ Golf R.... so I would take an R all day over the focus RS. It is also a lot more of a sleeper once running stage 2. American V8 guys just stare at you awkwardly as you drive past them. The RS is a great car, it just screams "look at me" in person. And the car is actually overally tall for what it needs to be.

Good review EddieX. Did that tune affect the fuel economy too much?
No doubt the RS drives like a sporty car, and under certain conditions its a little rough, but "beat you death" seems over the top. Either you have crap roads where you are or something was wrong with the RS you drove. I *love* that you can't get an auto in the RS, and I love that it doesn't have a "comfort" mode.
Lastly, I'm not getting too many people trying to race every time I drive. Most encounters with other sporty/fun cars have been people rolling their windows down and thumbs ups, or complete ignorance of what it is. No regrets here.

I've driven the RS and the GTI, but not an R yet. The R is on my radar to replace my 5 speed Forester XT. You're right about the RS, that thing beats you up. I also was not a fan of the RS seats, even being an athletic guy. I'm 5'10, 190 and wear a 44 regular suit jacket and the RS seats are just not comfortable at all. Thanks for the great review!

I’ve had this car since it came out. The MOST FUN car I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned some very fun cars. Tuning it and having a SLEEPER that eats cars for breakfast that you wouldn’t race on a normal day in most cars. I always get “what the hell is this car?!” Once they catch up. And it’s always a pleasure to tell them. I have the manual and the only thing I can say is to upgrade the clutch the minute you do the stage 1. The clutch can’t handle the Torque and the boost

The GTI isn't THAT less expensive than the R. Fully load an Autobahn with Performance pack and it's only a 2 grand cheaper

EXACTLY. I was looking at one just yesterday and it was 37k, rebates get it to 35. Still crazy for a GTI when the R is a stones throw away.
I got my 35th GLI for 23k. Has the DCC suspension, similar weight, and a $1500 turbo swap away from making the same power as this R.

The 2017 pretoria wheels are my absolute favorite on the Golf R. They should have kept those in 2018 and 2019 instead of switching to those fugly wheels...

What about the tune? You barely mentioned it. Is it just an ECU software refresh, or a new chip? Different turbo? Less restricted air intake? Exhaust mods? Does whatever was done negate the warranty?
Mark Villano I’m sure if it’s all stock it’s a stage 1 tune. For stage 2 they usually want you to downpipe, Intercooler and intake upgrade. But for intake you can get a high flow filter.

Golf R with tune will be quicker than a stock s4.

If you're cool with replacing head gaskets every weekend the RS could be worth it
How's the body roll? Can't imagine it's terrible with something sitting that low, but it's often something I've been impressed with from VW (SUVs specifically )

Vw HP/TQ numbers are to the wheels not to the crank like you mentioned... FYI. Same goes for tune #'s. That's why these cars are much faster than they seem 👌
The Focus RS got its awd system from a company in Australia that has very little experience in the awd field. I'd take a Haldex system over the new designed set up on the RS. I'd rather have perm full time e awd vs the rear wheel drive mode the RS has. That is what it really is, just a rear wheel drive mode.

So I have a Focus RS. But I honestly might get the R for a DD. Then just track the RS. It does look so comfortable. hmmm

AWD system between the two is night and day, the RS has a much more advance AWD system than the Golf
Great video. One clarification: For the 2017 model, there's only one trim and no options available. Starts out at $40-41k depending on where you are. I got mine brand new for $37.5k in NH.

Can you tell us about the tune on this Golf R? Also, you mentioned it doesn't really kick in until 3-4K rpm. Could it be tuned to have more torque in the low end? Thanks.
In my opinion, for the money, the Seat Leon Cupra, all wheel drive with 300 Horses. When one buys a VW, you pay more money for the VW badge.
Better quality than the Focus RS and the transmission is better. Too bad that they switched to a 4cylinder from the wonderful 3.2 v6 that the R32 had...

How would you compare this to a mercedes a45 amg? Prices for the merc. is relatively high compared to the golf r. But if you've driven one, would you say the higher price tag for the amg is worth it?
Man, if the new R wasn’t only auto I’d love one. But I’m not paying 4500$ for the trans when it goes out in any way. Only downside to that awesome dsg. The smallest problem and the whole thing has to be replaced.
How does it feel when you step on it with the tune?
If VW put the 2.5TFSI in the golf R, it would be one of the best cars VW would ever release. But nobody would by the RS3.

Can you review generic cars as well? Like 2017 honda civic, toyota collora, hyndai enlantra ..... other brend so on as well please, those cars are cars numerous people actually buy and drive.
Haldex is NOT the company who makes the 4wd....... haldex does truck brakes and nothing else. Haldex a swedish company invented the type of 4wd system in this car and sold that division to borg Warner like 5-10years ago. Borg Warner makes the ( and presumably own the rights) 4wd systems to this and other VW, Audi and Volvo cars amongst others.

Anaswar Jayakumar I can report the headroom is great in the Mark 7 GTI/Audi S3, but not sure how the lack of sunroof affects it. Also, the seats are amazing in the golf and they were plenty adjustable. (I liked to be sitting on the floor)

The GTI clubsportS is actually the fastest golf ever made from factory.
I have a manual 16 MK7R and while its easily the most refined car I've owned for me its incredibly boring to drive. Obviously with a tune and more power I'm sure its fun but with 6 speed manual that would require a few additional expensive parts to be able to handle that power. The seats, apple carplay, sound system, steering wheel, ambient lighting, headlights/leds are all amazing. The awd is great is the snow as well even with summer tires, but its just a snoozefest to drive. The only sound I hear is a fake induction noise piped into the car which I hate. If you want a nice catback for some sound they go for over 2k. Idk, coming from a 2012 stage 2 wrx hatch its just a different beast. I felt so much more engaged in my wrx mainly due to the uel header sound and the sound of turbo/intake. With this in stock form its as quiet as a prius aside from the soundaktor noise, and of course the looks are bland too which I don't mind as much. All this being said I chose the golf r over a sti because the sti motor is so outdated and has so many issues. But after a year I'm already looking for a new and more engaging car.

Dave auf dem BMW it would have been a Revo or Apr stage 1 tune. Just a remap. The R motor is just a detuned S4 motor which is 370hp.
