Great review..Had this car for nearly a year.. Dsg gearbox.The paddle shift is quite amazing in manual mode..Gear change is so quick. Also last winter driving in snow had no problems at all due to 4 wheel drive..All round the car is superb cannot fault it.

Love the Golf R. But whether it's worth the extra $$$ compared to a GTI depends on one's priorities and location. When I was shopping last spring here in the US Pacific Northwest the real world price difference between a fully loaded GTI (Autobahn) and a comparably equipped R was at least $10,000 (USD). Here in the US we don't get the full set of features available on either the GTI or the R available in Europe but the price of each is substantially less. (At current exchange rates an R goes for about $41K vs $63K in Europe.) I ultimately went with a GTI and added an APR Stage I tune and love it. It has all the power I want and a sunroof that's not available on the R and a blessing in the gloomy Seattle winter weather. But I wouldn't argue with anyone willing to pay the marginal premium for a Golf R.

@@xlewis1209x Are you located in the US? The R doesn't currently offer a sunroof in the US. Why? Probably because safety certification in the US requires separate crash tests for vehicles with a sunroof versus those without. That's an expensive proposition for a manufacturer, especially for a low sales volume vehicle. Thus, VW doesn't offer a sunroof for the R or the e-Golf. Edit: I believe VW may have offered a sunroof on the R in the past but not since the MK7 platform was introduced.
Of course, VW could compensate for that cost by increasing the price of the R in the US. But the R already faces stiff competition in the hot hatch category from vehicles like the Civic Type R and the new Veloster N. And already at more than $40K MSRP, it already pushes toward the price of a base Audi. Given that Americans are already skittish about paying what Europeans pay for VW products, increasing the price even further is to be avoided if possible.
VW won't put it this way. They'll instead claim that deleting the sunroof option on the R is a "feature" for a vehicle with ambitions as a track tool. The added weight of the sunroof reduces the R's performance advantages (very slightly) and makes it more difficult for tall drivers to fit in the seat while wearing a helmet. But that's largely marketing speak.

You get a great car with that MQB platform, it is leeps and bounds ahead of all the other eco platforms out there in refinement.
The tax on my 7.5R was £140, the salesman laughed as he said it's the same as the UP 🤣 loving mine, going APR STAGE 1 real soon

@@1cameronjk Hello mate, fuel consumption is quite good for a car with 300hp. I get on average 30mpg driving in town and across country in race mode...but generally driving more economically than with a heavy right foot. If you drive the car hard in race mode you'll be looking at around 22mpg but if you drive carefully in eco mode, you'll get 35+mpg.

Gotten any crank walk yet? Heard the manual gearboxes in the R are made of butter...too many crank walk horror stories for my taste

blower sounds class. Must be one of the last R models for 2019 in the U.K. if it comes in March.
First thing I did when I got my new r was connect my carista and turn off the sound actuator off apart from that great car U can get 40mpg driving sensible on a long run or u can get 17mpg by thrashing it either way the car is more than capable of doing both

I’m surprised it’s so much in Ireland. In Poland a fully loaded R with DSG is 44,600 euro. And here in the US, $42,000. I’m thinking of buying a 2019 R as soon as they show up.
When I shopped for a golf 2018 (gti) I liked all the features of the autobahn, dcc, bigger brakes, etc. I also liked the look of the fog lamps and the moonroof. I didn't know anything about golfs at the time. I saw the lapiz blue and that oryx white pearl but didn't see headlamps on either nor the moonroof. I was set on the color and didn't realize the engine was also different. The price difference was about $3000. 5 years later I am definitely happy with my 2018 R DSG Lapiz Blue. 39,000 is a lot of money for a golf but you get a lot of car. Worth it for me and I was just looking at the color. If I would have waited for 2019 I would have gotten a spektrum color.

@@NobbyOnCars The new R is a lot of car. $39,000 was still a lot in 2018. I almost sold mine when used car prices peaked. I see some on auto trader with less than 30k miles that are asking for $33,000 or more. I had offers of up to $36,000 in 2021 for a 3 year old car. I love seeing them on the road. No problems yet and still under warranty.

@@NobbyOnCars The Golf R here in Canada is a relative bargain. It works out to €35000 out the door. Down side is no sunroof and "only" 290hp for North America models. Car is a blast to drive and hard to drive without smiling. Lapiz Blue, DSG for me!

About the soundaktor, just get OBDELEVEN and disable it, as well as tweaking other little things. Makes it a hell of a lot better!

@@XxcalprofenxX very good option man,but the price was just real pain in my ass...i went mtm stg1 instead..and from the price of leather..nav...siper tutti frutti but unnecessary gadget price ...i bought all things it need to be more track capable...full open carbon intake...eventuri..stg1 mtm..brake pad disc hose fluid,sway bars and so on...

@@XxcalprofenxX your loint of view also acceptable..but here in hungary the warranty and the related customer service is a piece of shit..if you have any issue...the check the telemetry...oooo you use too often the accelerator....and you also use the car often at high rev range....warranty rejected because of NOT proper use or as the car intended. So i buy only the car..what i can replace urgently or change that for a new one without any problem or hesitation!

You can get maps on your centre display and also on the infotainment system at the same time if you have the nav pro like my Golf R 👍
I have the Infotainment showing a further-out view of the map with a 200 meter focus on the road in front in the centre display.

BTW, if you don't like the engine sound after 50-80 KMH then just switch it to normal or eco sound, reduces the level right off for a quiet drive if you want it.
@Lantern not the UK variant, not aware of any other countries that offers that for the Golf family.
TBH I have used heads up in another car and I found it distracting being projected onto the windscreen.
If you get the pro nav setup on the R you can have maps on the main infotainment display and also in the centre display with your rev and speedometer - which is very cool and handy. I use one map as an overview and the other as a zoomed in view.
Not as thirsty as is made out. I have a manual 7R and 35mpg is achievable when you dont fancy hooning it.. but lets face it, you dont buy an R not to hoon 😉
55k EUROS! In the US (pre-dealer markup), the most expensive you can spec it is a hair over 43k USD.

in what country does the golf r gets priced 55k euros? in germany the golf r starts at 42k euros and in Cyprus 43k euros.

Reliable? Build quality?? Well, B.Q. at first until it starts rattling from the doors. You want reliability, buy a Honda or Toyota. To a slightly lesser extent, a Mazda. Most folks I know who own a Golf have been left stranded by one. But who cares! The GTI and the Golf R are immensely fun!!! And thankfully, since they're not reliable, you can get used ones for surprisingly cheap prices. (Though you will have to budget a good chunk of money towards repairing everything the previous owner ruined on it.)
As far as Road Tax goes, your politicians are ripping you off on that side of the ocean. Want a fast car, pay them every year for the privilege of driving one. Only the environmentalists with their diseased mentality think these politicians care about trees. Think about it.... Charging people more money for polluting the air. That doesn't actually stop pollution. You don't see politicians going into the woods with bags of Road Tax money, and tapping English Pounds to tree trunks as a way of making up for the pollution. Road Tax is simply class warfare. The rich won't care that they have to pay extra. It's nothing to them but a nuisance fee. To Working Class individuals, it's a big chunk of their money _legally_ stolen from them. A thief is a thief. Doesn't matter if there's a law in place that says they have the right to steal your money.

Disagree, the pro nav sucks precisely because it's pure touch screen. Horrific and dangerous to use while moving.
Suj I disagree. My R has the pro - I use the steering wheel controls to adjust volume. Is safer than reaching for the knob? Knobs on the screen aren’t needed.....plus nav on the screen and digital gauges is an excellent feature.

Quick question ... How many KM can u do with a full tank? I know that, the person that is gonna buy this car is gonna look at the consumption, but still it is a practical car in the end and depending on the individual and needs, although this is a good review :)

Stick to eco and it'll do over 30mpg, perhaps 35+ on the highway. Not bad at all, eh?
Our DSG mk7.5 does 600-700km per tank, easily.

Is the Golf R truly 55,000 Euros? I realize there are differences between the North American Golf R and the Euro Golf R but I paid about $42,000 Canadian for my Golf R, or about 27,680 Euros (conversion as of writing this). I should note mine has the 6 speed manual and I opted out of the driver assistance package as I do not require it where I live. Just curious if the prices vary that much from region to region, it's very interesting if they do! Maybe there are more differences between the NA and Euro models than I realize.
truelife13 I’m afraid it can be yes, this one has a few extras but the standard car is about €47,000. We have a separate tax in Ireland called VRT which adds a whole chunk onto the price.

Off topic question but do you think the Golf Mk.8 will have the digital dash as standard? The GTI and R are a little out of my price range and honestly too noisy for every day use. Wondering if a Mk.8 1.5TSI is a good replacement for my 141 Golf.

Once it's the facelift version if that is what you are after, then 2018 should do you but it is possible that even a 2019 could be pre facelift as stock may have been slower to shift in a particular dealer but it's fairly obvious to spot. Bigger screen on head unit, lights etc. I'm in Ireland so I'm not sure of the price you'd normally pay in Germany sorry!

Nice review. They are a great car but I disagree that the Soundaktor is the "only" negative thing about this car. I know the "understated" looks are a selling point, but at the same time, do you not think it looks a little bit too unassuming and bland for a 300 horsepower hot hatch? It looks completely forgettable especially in that 'indium grey' colour, it's far too similar to any other R-line TDI Golf. The interior is also very dull and I find the seats quite poor for the level of car they are in. You get better seats in a Skoda Octavia vRS, even the seats in the Superb TDI Sportline from your other review look much better and befitting of a "sports car". The R is a very capable car but for the price and type of car, the interior as a whole lacks any sense of occasion and the exterior styling is a little bit too boring.
I hear you but I'd say that VW have always operated in that way. A Golf GTI is the same, less fuss than other hot hatches simply because it's the original and doesn't have to try as hard. I think giving lesser Golf models similar badges by adding the R-Line was a mistake alright. In the R32 there was options for those proper bucket seats but they were a massive option price extra, again the Skoda stacks more in because it's not a VW. I think your points are very valid but I do think it's always been that way. When the MKV GTI was around, the Focus ST came along and had the 5 cylinder engine, more noticeable colours etc so it's not a new thing that the Golf can be seen as not trying hard enough but I think some love it for that very reason, it's not too much of a show off in the looks department.
johnnycos2211 your exactly right in what your saying, they are too bland and look to much the ‘r line’ I think vw will probably jump on the Audi/bmw bandwagon and offer the mk8 r with some sort of black pack. I have a mk7.5 gti pp and I parked next to the same colour r and the r just looks too understated. Love or hate the tartan seats in the gti but at least they brighten the interior up!
As for the soundaktor u can put in in individual and turn it off anyways.
This grey is actually my favorite color. It makes the R look composed and solid. Lapiz is beautiful but just too common now. White silver is also a hit.
I prefer the Cadiz 19" over the Pretorias.
I agree the R-Line thing is a joke.
For me the interiors are durable materials and practical. The tech is functional and intuitive.
Buck for buck, the Golf R is still the best hatch in it's league.
@johnnycos2211, the whole point of the Golf R is being tastefully discreet and grown up, the look of Less is More. Some get the styling and some don't - you don't.
If you want flim flam and spoilers etc there's plenty of other cars to go for as you mention.
It's a perfect design for someone in the 40 s

It's a better all rounder in the sense that it blends in a bit more and being 4WD. The Type R however is an out and out rawer experience. The way it handles considering it's a FWD is remarkable. Both great fun, just with different appeals.

Room for 5 yes, will it be tight in the back for 3 grown men? Yes. Boot is quite small too depending on if you've people needing the rear seats.

In the market for an R currently (June 2020) and the price garages down here in Southern Ireland are charging for second hand R’s is nothing short of FUCKING SCANDALOUS.. il be going up north and getting a higher spec and lower mileage car saving at least 5/6 thousand euros after VRT is paid. even in the middle of the corona virus when nobody is buying cars they are still asking insane money
Main problem is the golf r is too heavy, mid range is poor. Amazing all round car but just not fast enough as standard for the money
0-60mph in 4.6 seconds for an every day hatchback isn't fast enough? That is faster than a gen1 Audi R8 V8, supercar times in a practical family 5 door for goodness sake. What kind of performance figures would satisfy you?
If the stock HP isn't enough, you can easily add a lot more with a simple APR tune which keeps your warranty. I've had mine for about 4 1/2 years with zero problems. I upped the ante and am now pushing nearly 100 more HP making it a Dr. Jekle (great daily driver) / Mr. Hyde (when the mood strikes me) monster.

The much quicker R is my choice over a lot less fun and much older r32!
If a current R32 was available I would get it in a second. I agree with the engine sound, even with exhaust it sounds different at best. I think I am going to get the apr crate engine with the stage 3+ and keep the stock exhaust. Keep it a true sleeper.

You get to a stage in life where you don't want a noisy engine. I don't want a booming noise in the cabin, and I am way way past thinking that anyone on the pavement is going to be the slightest bit interested in what noise my car makes. As for the soundaktor, turn it off, or get something like an OBD11 and code it all the way down.

mac daddy DSG has been a huge product for VW. If you don’t like it, that’s cool but you can’t claim that only your opinion is the right one. I’ve owned manual performance cars so I totally get the manual love but DSG is still a popular choice for others.
DSG is just another automatic. You might as well be driving a Prius then.

But guys Audi is phasing out DSG - new RS and S family cars recently released all have torq conv autos. VW will surely follow in coming years? That said though, I have a manual 7.5 R which I love - but I can’t deny that the the DSG R is way easier to drive fast, plus most people can’t ignore that it DSG is sooo much quicker in straight line. It leaves the manual for dead from the line!! My next R I I get another will prob be DSG (I think they have deleted the manual anyway in my country)
