    This arena was neat because it had it's own "mark" or unique trait of having a big screen up in the very far corner of the arena. Everytime WWE was there for a live TV taping, you could see it during matches.

    I always loved this arena, and have fond memories of the sporting events and concerts I saw there. I couldn't understand why it was suddenly deemed unfit and outdated. Sadly, however, it doesn't seem tenable to leave it standing. As the narrator points out, between the fact that the Nets and Devils both left, and the abundance of nearby concert venues, the proverbial writing is on the wall.

    • @PurpleCrownVic
      @PurpleCrownVic 2 года назад +1

      Probably the same reason as the Charlotte Colliseum. It was built right before a huge jump in stadium technology, and its just cheaper long term to build a new arena thats made for the new technology than to upkeep an old one.

    • @freakyfornash
      @freakyfornash 2 года назад

      @@PurpleCrownVic Same was also the case with the Orlando, and Miami Arena(s), which were okay for the times, but weren't going to be sustainable long term. That along with other late 80's venues in the Arco (later Sleep Train) Arena, Bradley Center, and the Palace of Auburn Hills, which were all initially state of the art and had good runs, but inevitably become outdated as time went on as well. Same could also be said when Seattle first rebuilt the Coliseum, and converted it into the Key Arena in 95, which wasn't sustainable, and had to eventually be redone in order to accommodate major league sports once more in the end too.

    The location of the arena is the problem. Newark is a much easier drive for people in Sussex, Essex, Warren, and Morris county. The Meadowlands arena is over an hour drive, where as Newark is about 40 minutes for most people in Northern NJ. There’s nothing to do in the meadowlands either, it’s literally just an arena in the middle of nowhere. The Newark arena has restaurants, the train to the city, bars, within walking distance of the Prudential Center. People supported the Nets and Devils, it’s just that if you want to build a team for NJ, put the arena where everyone in Jersey can reach it, not on the border of NYC that could care less about NJ sports teams

    Oh my I remember this arena. I went to a preseason Nets game. I didn't really like the area it was in. The atmosphere was off and in a bit of an awkward area to my liking. Ahhh The industrial north Jersey aura. I'm a devils fan and haven't been to a game there until they moved to Prudential Center. At that time I watched all the games on TV, but although Newark isn't the best area the spot the arena is in is lined with security and police and is like 3 blocks from the train

    Newer doesn’t mean better. The Superdome in New Orleans was built in 1975 and it’s still iconic to this day!

    It’s so crazy to me when a sports team builds a whole new arena because the 20-year old one they’ve been playing in is starting to show it’s age. The Oakland A’s have been trapped at the Oakland Colosseum for decades now! Other teams make it look so easy to just build a billion dollar arena like it’s nothing.

      I think most arenas and stadiums built after 2000 won't share similar fates to their predecessors. If you look at statehouses across the US, most states built some cheap piece of crap just to get something up in the mid 1800s but then most of those fell into disrepair after 20-30 years. At the turn of the century most states made significant investments into constructing much more useful and structurly sound buildings which still stand and are is use today with no thoughts of replacing anytime soon. I think we have a similar story with sports venues especially since it's hard to imagine live sports growing any bigger or changing in any significant way.

    The Prudential Center is certainly a better place to watch games, but the old swamp certainly got louder. Nothing matched Devils playoff games in the Meadowlands in terms of atmosphere. The crowd was absolutely electric.
    I still miss the old place. It wasn’t great for basketball, but it was AMAZING for hockey.
    Also, it had the greatest goal horn of all time and nothing else has come close.

      It wasn't great for basket ball maybe because the nets sucked. Had they had more successful seasons like they did with Jason kidd I'm sure you would feel alot differently.

    I went to my one and only event at this arena in 2001. About 2 months after 9/11. It was the first time i'd ever been patted down and metal detectored to get into a basketball game. Kentucky vs Duke in the Jimmie V classic.

    Governments should never be in the venue business. That is not a legitimate government function. There are too many ways to steal tax money when government does this kind of stuff.

    I went here for several Devils, and some occasional Nets games back in the day too. It was an interesting, albeit somewhat dull place, with no frills what so ever. I do miss it a lot, and sad it had to close, even if it could in no way compete with the new arenas popping up all over the place, with the bells & whistles this building never once had though.

    Not at all from Jersey or nearby but have an uncle/cousins who lived there, and while on a holiday visit got to see the Nets and Dražen Petrović play Boston and Reggie Lewis on 22 December of 1992...and they died on, respectively, 7 June and 27 July of the following year. People die young every day, sure --but that was just shocking and sad stuff.
