Fun story. Might make me sound a little crazy, but oh well. I am a lifelong Pacers fan, and was 9 when the Pacers-Pistons brawl occurred. I always say that whole night was the first time in my life something happened that I can remember every second perfectly. Growing older, I eventually met my now Wife while touring in Ohio. Her and her family were from NW Ohio/SE Michigan, so they frequented Tigers and Pistons games throughout the years. Although my Wife was not a huge basketball fan, I wanted to take her to the Palace to watch a Pacers-Pistons game (I obviously converted her to a Pacers fan kekW). I actually proposed to her in the Palace near where Artest jumped into the stands. We are still married and have 2 amazing kids. Everytime I watch something about the Pacers-Pistons fight, or just about the now demolished stadium, it makes me think of two monumental parts of my life. The love for the Pacers and basketball, and starting the road to marriage and a family with my wife. Hopefully this wasn't lame and bizarre, but I figured I'd share, seeing as how I'll probably never go back to this site again unless they build something else. Thanks for the video.

Bill Davidson made the Pistons relevant and the palace was a home of their own not to share with other pro teams in SE Michigan/Detroit. The Palace was a world class arena that was updated to stay world class throughout its lifespan. The Pistons won 3 championships within its walls. Concerts sounded awesome there. Its a shame it was tossed aside by the current owner after acquiring the Pistons following Davidsons death. The Pistons currently share the new arena with the Red Wings which the Wings owner built, they no longer have their own arena and have not had success in the playoffs since their goin to work days. No plan was respected. It was a sad story.
I agree it almost feels like the Silverdome Era. I’m definitely not old enough to remember when they played at Cobo but that was their house just like the Palace. Cobo was another Arena that was amazing. It had Character. Perfect venue for Junior Hockey or American Hockey League. When they demolished the palace it was still one of the top arenas to watch a basketball game at in the whole NBA I just don’t understand why they demolished it.

Although I agree with the more recent trend of moving sports venues back into city centers, as I kid of the 80’s and 90’s growing up in Central Michigan, I can remember when The Palace opened in the late 80’s. It had a legendary aura around it and the entire state of Michigan was a buzz talking about it. It was known as the most modern sports venue in the world at the time, and our whole state seemed to be proud of it. As a kid who lived in a very small town of only 1,800 too, hours from the Detroit area, and only ever watching games on TV, The Palace felt like just that to me; a palace. It was this legendary luxurious place I never quite thought I’d get to growing up. I can remember all sorts of huge music artists at the time from Madonna to New Kids on the Block performed there, and they all seemed to desire it and even seek it out. The first time I ever saw a game there, it was like this surreal dream. Not only did it feel like fantasy, having only ever seen games on TV, but at the time suburbs like Auburn Hills felt so nice, safe, and were really desirable. Unlike downtown Detroit at the time, where my family wouldn’t even set foot. The last time I was in The Palace was around 1997, before I moved out of Michigan, but I’ll never forget how special it was back in its earliest days. I still don’t see why it had to be torn down. I suppose in the end, it’s a building for a business, and everything changes over time. But for only being just over 30 years old, I’d think it could have remained.

Makes me sick!!! These arena are still serviceable the cities could use that money for so much better things for the city / community . Here in Buffalo we have played inside rich stadium since 1973 we sell it out every year we keep it clean updated moderate and new. Now we have to hear the threat of our beloved buffalo bills moving to Austin Texas because they say we must build a new arena which is still a great stadium
For some unknown reason RUclips suggested Modern Ruins to me. Glad they did since I don’t think I would’ve ever seen these vids. I’m in the process of binge watching all the episodes now. Great job!
As a kid I would have dreams of going to the Palace to watch a game. I live in Europe but I had family in Detroit who would sometimes go to games. Me,being a basketball fan that sounded like paradise.
I went to the last concert at the Palace which was Bob Seger. I had a lot of great times at the palace. Many Pistons games and concerts it was a really beautiful arena and I was sad to see it go. I remember the Pistons sold it out like 5 years straight and they had a sign up for every sellout and would change it each game. When my kid was young we love to go to the Pistons game the night before Thanksgiving and the Lions game on Thanksgiving. It was kinda out of the way for me and getting out of the parking lot sucked it was a great place to see an event and I miss it.
I was at the palace championship game 5 Loudest game I'll ever go to everyone had thundersticks to bang loud and every single point and good play the palace constantly erupted. I it definitely went down too early, The Palace felt like a palace to me I loved going back there , the new arena feels like just a place to be honest.
04 was such a good year for Detroit Basketball. The WNBA Finals between the Sparks and Shock is still the greatest WNBA Finals of all time. Game 3 was a classic! The crowd made the game 10x better. I'm not a Pistons fan but my favorite championship team is the 04 Pistons. I used to be a fan of the run and gun offense but they made me appreciate defense. Ben Wallace was a bad man. The crazy thing is he could've scored if he wanted to. Check out that last game against the Lakers in the finals. Shout out Detroit Basketball 💯
Sports arenas are always a challenge - once teams move away or events end (i.e. The Olympics), it's hard to find someone to take them over. Worse, they are usually built with taxpayer dollars - lots of them - and you get stuck with a big chunk of prime property with a building that isn't used anymore
I'll never forget that brawl, saw it live when I lived in Detroit ... overheard it from my kitchen and was thinking 'What the Hell is going on??" Walked in and saw it unfold into chaos. Everyone couldn't stop talking about it for a week.
This is a master piece about an iconic stadium that sadly got lost in time I guess. Reminds me of Arco Arena in Sacramento could you lend your expertise to doing a video on that? Im a huge fan
Fun fact I went to the Palace once just to see this Marvel Avengers thing there with my brother because it was his birthday gift. Really enjoyed it. Plus my dad works near the Palace
I loved the Palace... I saw Tommy Hearns last fight, a few Pistons games, a few Shock games, and toured it one summer with a sports program. Rip to the Palace
R.I.P The Palace of Auburn Hills 1988-2020, thanks for the memories and 3 NBA Championships of Detroit Pistons, I’ll never forget get the Pistons vs. Pacers Brawl on the night of November 19, 2004 I was 19 years old.
I am not even from the US but I am binging your videos and love the way you narrate and edit them with the little notes and stuff! I find it so odd to see how it is so easy to just demolish buildings up there while we never do that with stadiums here and sports teams do not move locations ever!
Great video post, I definitely appreciate your histrionics and timeline. I definitely appreciate the timeline for "The Malice at The Palace." Because there are so pretend wanna be journalist, documentarians who want to rewrite history. That or give their negativity on the story. Bashing Detroit Police who aren't Auburn Hills Police. Now to my thoughts on the old arena dying and the new arena. As for the Palace of Auburn Hills. I never went but would have like to have gone. Someplace 30 miles outside of the city limits just exacerbated the story nobody really covers. The troubling and narcissistic relationship between the citizens of Detroit and the suburbs. As to the new arena Little Caesars Arena. I hope that everyone improves and there is still time. This is mostly on The Illitch Family Holdings who promised so much and delivered so little. As well exposed itself to troubling contractors in building the mega arena. Promising one thing and doing the total opposite. Some of which Illitch Holdings were sued for.
So far, I’ve watched your productions on the Boston Garden and the Palace of Auburn Hills. Top-notch, indeed! I have one minor correction: The debut basketball seating capacity at the Palace in 1988 was 21,454. The figure shown here at the 7:15 mark, reflects their upgraded capacity, at just over 22,000.

The palace spit in the face of corporate business by being independent and having it’s own name. that’s why they got rid of it. there was nothing out dated about the palace. it was built to adapt to the changes.
I'm thankful I got to experience the Palace. As a kid I went to a few WCW house shows and saw legends like Bret Hart, Chris Jericho, Ric Flair, and Curt Hennig live was dope. Later on being a fan of the Pistons and Mavs, I went to the 2 last games they played Dallas and was cool to see my fave player Dirk Nowitzki. I'll never forgive Gores for what he did to the Pistons. Also beloved head coach Chuck Daly passed away around the same time Bill Davidson passed.
I think the Red Wings brawl aunt Joe Louis arena was a lot more infamous.. it was nothing compared to a hockey brawl, but I’m glad everyone loved it and it took place at the palace. Great videos man seriously.
I remember watching Pistons games on TV when it open a older African -American fan had his seat center court about 3 rows up on the aisle. He was cool, would wear Pistons warm ups and cap. Anybody remember him? He was not carzy like that Bullets fan of that era.
About the Bullets fan, they had those two dogs Alex and tiny. I was one of the few who hated the Capital Center, only was to get there was drive, had to look forever for your car
As a Lakers fan this was sad to watch the fourm in Inglewood is one of the best concert venues but Steve Balmer just brought it from James Dolan so it may be demolished too but the city trying to save it it's directly across the street from the rams and chargers new stadium
I agree. I grew up in Florida and was a lifelong Lakers fan. The Forum was my all time favorite arena. I hated when they changed the name for the 88'-89' season to the Greatwestern Forum. It's like they took the championship mettle out of our team and we didn't win a single NBA Finals game in that building since the name change. The Forum will always go down as the best arena and public address announcer(Lawrence Tanter) to ever grace the NBA. Long live "The Forum"!!!!
My first concerts at the Palace were both Metallica shows back to back in Nov of 1991 and the last 2 were Rush in June and Motley Crue in Aug. of 2015. With MANY shows in between including U2,Black Sabbath ,Pantera and Madonna. Really awesome Memories, What a great sounding venue and great place to see a Show. Still hard for me to believe they demolished it, even though I saw it live on TV.
Malice at the palace 😂 🤣. Knew there was a documentary coming out on Netflix about that sh*t show, didn’t realize it was out already. Gotta check it out. And 325,000,000 bucks for a professional team and an arena is freaking nuts man, that is dirt cheap. Hey man, you should do a video on the Pontiac Silverdome… Can never get enough short Docs on that thing. Would of been nice, at the end of this video you could of played Bob Segers song “Famous Final Scene”. With copyright and other legal bs, that would of been very difficult.
Man i was blessed to see many pistons games back in 04 and the Detroit Shock womans team games was some of the biggest the Detroit shock use to rock that place man some many great memories forever greatful 💙
I attended my first NBA game and my first concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Great memories for me there. I saw Pistons legends like the Bad Boys, Grant Hill, and the Going to Work Pistons, as well as other NBA legends like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, at the Palace. I saw music legends like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Rage Against the Machine, Rodger Waters, Fleetwood Mac at the Palace.
Wow. I never had a chance to go and I kinda get why the Pistons moved (Billionaire owner, who has more money than all of us combined), but wow did that look like an incredibly intimate, well designed place. And they did nothing but improve it, even 8 years into it's existence. Such a shame. Wish I had of had the chance to visit.
Yes sir….. I want to say Detroit is the only city to have all their professional sports teams in one city, or it was at one point anyway. Not sure if other cities have done this.
I mean... Take away the municipaly funded silverdome and privately funded palace and they're average. The fact that the red wings had their own arena for so long was so unbelievable to me. But I don't know anyone who watches hockey so 🤷♂️
@@LeeBreece they don’t call it hockey town for nothing. I am not surprised at all the wings had their own arena. Ask any hockey fan and they will more then likely tell you the same thing. Neat video. Very well done. As a native of Wisconsin, I was curious about possible similarities to the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. I definitely see some similarities with these two venues. Nearly similar groundbreaking and opening dates. Similar life spans. Location was different thou. The Bradley Center was in downtown Milwaukee, as opposed to an outlying area. Anyways, good video.
Man I have a lot of great memories there also some bad ones in the early 2000’s security got really lax and leaving the game or fights you never knew what was waiting for you in the parking lot!
my mom won some ticket to see the Pistons from a radio show back when I was 12 or so and took me for my birthday with a friend! Had to had been around 2008 or so. Sad to know it was tore down
HATED getting to the Palace, LOVED it once inside. Literally nothing to do around it and the lot sits vacant to this day. Everyone knew once LCA was announced for the Red Wings even IF the Pistons stayed all concerts would go back to Detroit. The Palace was literally 35 minutes North of Detroit and with the revitalization of the Woodward corridor the Palace didn't stand a chance. It was only shocking because Gores had JUST dumped a ton of money into it and I cant even imaging the loss they took. Little Caesars Arena is so great that the 1st event I went to calmed all doubts and it was 100% the right move. Having all 4 sports teams and stadiums within walking distance is AWESOME! DETROIT is in the middle of one of the greatest comeback stories in the country and the sacrifice the Palace owners made to make it happen was KEY. Happy Memories Palace, You were great!
There was a third Arena that didn't sell naming rights for its Arena. The Richfield Coliseum or the coliseum in Richfield was that arena. It was the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers play their basketball games from 1972 to 1994. Just like the palace it was located in a rural area between the cities of Akron and Cleveland Ohio. It stood abandoned for five years when it was finally bought by the national park system which tore it down.
The demise of The Palace began the day the first brick was layed. Detroit is only 40 minute drive from Pontiac. Detroit's eventual downtown rebirth was always on the mind of planners, builders and civil authorities in Oakland County.

I suppose in the end, it’s a building for a business, and everything changes over time. But for only being just over 30 years old, I’d think it could have remained.
AGREED
ya i agree with the move just wish they would had kepy Palace for something a waste of a Great Venue it could been the Music Venue or WWE should had bought it used it for Michigan Events etc or something wish Oakland U would had bought it what a great college Bball venue it would been
growing up 10 minutes away from this place; i’m glad that you took the time to make this
Clinton Twp. Here. Saw soooo many great concerts at TPOAH.
Very fortunate to have many amazing memories there and the Silverdome.
the house that Barry Built was a sad moment but the Palace was in so much better shape than the Silverdome
I went to the third event ever at the Palace of Auburn Hills. WWF Wrestling. August 15, 1988. So sad. Never forget you Palace.
Did not think my business school would show up in a video about the palace hahaha! Great video!!!
The malice in the palace will live with me forever I was deployed to Iraq at the time I remember watching it in the dining facilities with all my friends some of whom are no longer with us good times
As a lifelong resident of Oakland County this whole thing makes me sick. Another victim of our throwaway society.
I was watching the malice at the palace live back in the day. I’ll never forget that
Excellent video. This reminds me of the Atlanta Braves moving out of a perfectly good Turner Field just because they could.
This is the best channel I’ve found in a while. Top tear entertainment.
I am a Cleveland Cavs fan and I honestly thought the arena was new and nice. They could've kept it open.....greed sadly.
💯
facts use it for something music events etc
Worst mistake tearing down a arena that got renovated & can not find someone to occupy it.
Plus my dad works near the Palace
love the history told ,,, liked and subbed. hello from London Ontario Canada
If RUclips videos exist in 500 years, this channel will explain so much to future space-historians.
Now you're thinkin.
Dang. Thanks for the memories. Nothing last in Michigan
I have one minor correction:
The debut basketball seating capacity at the Palace in 1988 was 21,454.
The figure shown here at the 7:15 mark, reflects their upgraded capacity, at just over 22,000.
Wow that’s an absolutely thorough account of The Palace history 👍good job .
The Cure played their best performance in this building. Not the biggest fan of the Cure but their performance there was phenomenal.
I was there, and had to go through a giant thunderstorm in Flint before we got there! Lightning hit a guard rail next to us!
The Palace started the new trend of NBA Arenas..... A beautiful venue for sure💯
It very sad about professional sports arena!; they got to build a new one;; palace it was little Cesar new arena, competition:: college sports they happy with legendary very old arena ; one reason I like college sports
@@lloydkline1518 ceasers i was impressed with though i thought after the Palace nothing will come close same with The Silverdome but Ford field not bad even though it got a terrible cursed name FORD
@@BeUnFiltered23 the Palace was an great NBA basketball area in 1988 etc etc an it area in auburn hill ; michigan ; the pontiac silverdone was another revolutionaire NFL fiootball stadium in 1975 : Ford Field took it to another level in NFL football stadium ;;; silverdone had better parking ; outside cooking food & eating on the parking lots etc
@@BeUnFiltered23 ford family almost owns metro detroit ; hospitals ;; football ; ford ; auto company etc etc
@@lloydkline1518 ya i know that bro i worked for them but great loyal family however srry they dont know about football and winning sadly Detroit deserves it!!
"What happened to the Palace?"
There was Malice.
14:00 the greatest play by play of the malice at the palace I’ve ever heard/seen
I've been to The Place dozens of times it was a great venue I was sad to see it go..
The palace spit in the face of corporate business by being independent and having it’s own name. that’s why they got rid of it. there was nothing out dated about the palace. it was built to adapt to the changes.
Yeah no publicly owned arena would be torn down that fast
I miss going to the palace and seeing them blow the fire during intros. Scares the shit out of me when i was very young but i grew to love it
I'm thankful I got to experience the Palace.
The Palace was an amazing building. Little Caesars' Arena is about 10 steps back from the Palace. Nice video Sir.
I think the Red Wings brawl aunt Joe Louis arena was a lot more infamous.. it was nothing compared to a hockey brawl, but I’m glad everyone loved it and it took place at the palace. Great videos man seriously.
Biggest waste of money. They just renovated that place and spent over $100 million dollars then they tear it down a few years later. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
I remember watching Pistons games on TV when it open a older African -American fan had his seat center court about 3 rows up on the aisle. He was cool, would wear Pistons warm ups and cap. Anybody remember him? He was not carzy like that Bullets fan of that era.
I remember him he gave opposing team the fits he was a barber. Bill Davidson gave him lifetime free seats.
About the Bullets fan, they had those two dogs Alex and tiny. I was one of the few who hated the Capital Center, only was to get there was drive, had to look forever for your car
Great video but one thing to its success was its relative closeness to Ontario. A lot of Canadians would venture in for music concerts
I miss this place so much! It didn't have to be removed:(.
@@edwardlmerrieljr6822 Forum has since been declared a national landmark it won’t be demolished
@@darrendoyle568 yes it has.
Im impressed with all the behind the scenes footage you have of "Malice" as I dont recall any of the tv broadcasts showing all those closeups.
They came from the netflix documentary.
Sad to see so much money being wasted. I wonder what the Pistons’ profitability in the new sharing arrangement is vs what they had.
Worked there from 2005-2017. Saw everyone from AC/DC to zztop. It was amazing
The Pacers/Pistons/fans fight was AWESOME !!!!! That is what I call Quality Entertainment !!!!!!
Excellent video!
Great games and concerts venue.....
Great memories of palace of Auburn hills
Pacers franchise never recovered from that night in 2004.
For a state and city with so many financial issues. They know how to get new arenas.
Extremely successful sports team, not so much now days unfortunately. But hopefully that’s going to change here soon.
What a shame. Saw Thursday night fights, some b ball and hockey games and some awesome concerts there.
So many memories there...I even had my high school graduation ceremony in 95 there lol
Great documentary
Excellent video man and very detailed! I made one on the history as well
Lex Luger winning the title on nitro over Hogan
I was there too
Man I have a lot of great memories there also some bad ones in the early 2000’s security got really lax and leaving the game or fights you never knew what was waiting for you in the parking lot!
Imagine going to prison because you threw a cup LMAO
The guy that threw the chair to me is the one that was the most f'ed. John Green was already a pt bad dude.
@@LaBreeceTV well of course. i just thought that was goofy
😂😂
my mom won some ticket to see the Pistons from a radio show back when I was 12 or so and took me for my birthday with a friend! Had to had been around 2008 or so. Sad to know it was tore down
I miss the Palace, it was a beautiful place to be, and walk around and just take everything in.
God Bless The Bad Boys
I grew up in Michigan went to a lot of sporting events and concerts here
You were trending on my feed good content subscribe
Need one on the Richfield Coliseum!
It is just a field now.
This was a good vid, except that you pronounced Chuck Person, Tayshaun Prince, and Tom Gores wrong.
omg this is my hometown, my mother was a chef at the palace for years! have you already done a video on the silver dome???
I know nothing about basketball, but this seems an insane waste of a legendary building
I went to every WCW Monday Nitro they ever had there.
Also quite a few Detroit Vipers hockey games too. Even caught a couple of pucks
Damn, the Palace was so beautiful and independent, but of course...
Malive in the palace was so funny bro .....
Did anybody see the first dude that got hit say "oh shit" before attest stole em...😆😆
The demise of The Palace began the day the first brick was layed. Detroit is only 40 minute drive from Pontiac. Detroit's eventual downtown rebirth was always on the mind of planners, builders and civil authorities in Oakland County.
i got a piece of brick from The Palace and a seat from the Silverdome and i bought a hockey net from the Joe
