On the South Bluffs of Memphis standing tall next to the Mississippi River, sits a rare feat: a professional sports arena that survived demolition and was succesfully repurposed. The Memphis Pyramid, which as of now boasts destination retail, once was a one of a kind arena, housing the NCAA tournament, legendary concerts and NBA playoff games. However neither one of those ideas was what the venue was originally intended for, and conspiracies surround its entire story. In this video, we'll explore the origins behind why someone wanted to build a stainless steel pyramid in Memphis Tennessee, why their original idea didn't work out, and how the venue survived demolition to become one of the most unique hospitality experiences in America.

How about we don't
I worked for a scaffolding company and we got a contract to build some scaffolding hanging from the ceiling in the Memphis pyramid. 300+ feet high it was a permanent install one of the coolest installs I ever did with that company.
thats awesome
What. Company?

Imagine having a grand vision for a modern pyramid and it ends up being a damn Bass Pro Shop.
bass pro shops when thay saw the pyamind i can milk you
I mean, i'll take that over the super-church idea.
We were all pissed off when they did that
As a memphian, I didn't want a bass pro into the pyramid. Until I went in and I was amazed. I know it's not better then the store in Missouri, but it's still nice to visit
Now that's a very costly pyramid scheme.
W 😂
Where Shaq almost ripped the building down with those powerful dunks 😂
I was at The Big Dig (the groundbreaking for when they first built the pyramid). Me, my mom and the guy she was dating and his kids all sat on top of a parking garage and watched as they had a helicopter fly in and drop a giant "shovel" made of lights into the spot with fireworks going off.
Awesome video man you are killing it. Your videos are entertaining
Lol oh man.. I've lived in Memphis my whole life.. that intro talkin about how epic pyramids are, and already knowing how this story went had be facepalming lmao.. yeahh I have some good memories of going down there as a kid. Dad took me to watch the Tigers play a bunch of times, and I remember going for a few other events they held there as well.. so yeah, kinda sad for me.. although it's kinda cool, I guess, in it's own weird way? I just don't really have any reason to go there anymore.. A theme park or casino sounded kinda fun haha, but I really have no good ideas about what it could/should otherwise be either 🤷I can't imagine much else would surprise me more than it becoming a Bass Pro mega store though lmao 😅😅
The KFC Yum Center opened in 2010. I remember visiting Louisville in spring 2009 when my hotel room had a view of it being built.
Well done Lee and had no idea about this structure in Memphis.
I find that hard to believe!
@@LaBreeceTVYeah I was about to say that sane thing. You'd gotta be blind or ignorant enough to not notice a large Pyramid like structure in freaking DOWNTOWN!🤦🏾♂️
It has been there since 1991.
This is great amazing story since I’m a fellow Memphian, and I had my share of memories going to Memphis Tigers Basketball games at The Pyramid and I attended a few Grizzlies games there as well.
Listing this site as abandoned and then pushing draft kings, you def get a thumbs down
First of all, you can screw right off woth that false title there. You were completely better off without adding in the word "Abandoned" there in all caps. And screw the DraftKings ad too.
Second, while it's nice to see that there are more channels here doing videos on the Pyramid, speaking as a native here, there's not really much helping this city even if there was another attempt at making something as ambitious as that again. Especially with how crime ridden its been becoming more and more. There's a reason why it's known as the most dangerous city in the country numerous times.
If there’s a question mark in the thumbnail it’s click bait. The pyramid isn’t abandoned.
Im watching dis one again tn. so very good
I had no idea Memphis even had a pyramid and definitely would never have guessed it would end up being a bass pro shop lmao
As a Memphian, I have yet to visit "The Pyramid" Of course I would enjoy being a guest of Bass Pro and staying a couple of nights (including comps for food venues) but being Handicapable limits my options ;'(
Oh well
Bass Pro is relatively wheelchair friendly, you can go up to the top if you want.
Mane.
I was at the Judds concert
Probably one of the most unique building in the United States and we turned into a f'ing corporate whorehouse. I remember when there was still class in the South.
I think Memphis had its own Egypt thing going on because the original capital of Egypt was Memphis. As for Nashville, who knows.
I was at the Metallica concert that they show a picture of.
I wish they would have opened it back up as literally anything but a fucking Bass Pro Shop
Too bad they didn't make it a Luxor...
ALL IN
Great story!
I seen wwe and kid rock there in 2001
I have never been here even though I live near Memphis. I've been to the fed ex forum but that's about it.
11:51 hi penny
I didn't know it was abandoned
It's not
Title of the video is a bit clickbait'y since it's currently a Bass Pro Shops and has been for awhile now.
It's not. The title is clickbait.

It’s been a very impressive Bass Pro Shop for around ten years. I was living in Memphis when it opened. I’m pretty sure it opened in 2014, but it could have been early 2015. I’m not really a fan of Bass Pro Shop (or sporting goods stores in general), but this is one of the most impressive retail businesses I have ever seen.
@23:27 Nice view☀️🔺👁️
Finally a new episode! Stoked.
This just isn’t true this place is packed all the time I live in Memphis
Manny Pacquiao was on the undercard for one of those Tyson fights

Grizzlies should have changed their name to the Pharoahs
My daddy run the tower crane on it.
I'm heading there at the end of March
Why?
Good luck. They have decent food but frankly the place is a shit hole. And watch your back at night. Spent 3 weeks there. Will never be going back.

I’m friends with the guy and family of who decorated the interior of that place and many of bass pro shops
Ummm New Orleans is the capital of the Mississippi River. St Louis is the capital of guys with multiple apostrophes in their names.
Pretty sure you got your towns mixed up there bud.
@@StaYUTI420 Yeah, because St Louis is suuuuuch a cultural center huh?? Look both are shitttayyy places for the EXACT same reason. But one dangerous and boring one is dangerous and fun
@@fresatx New Orleans isn't that bad.
Oh shut up
What are we thinking closed down by 2030.
There is nothing about Memphis or any city in the US that makes me think, "yea, a giant steel and glass pyramid would be awesome here." Now with that being said.... Even worse of an idea a pyramid is in Memphis is having it enclose a Bass Pro store... Lmfao. There is no wildlife, hunting, fishing, or any other outdoor sport/activity has any relation with a pyramid. In my opinion anyway.. a concert venues/event center would make for a better fit.
Considering the fact that the city is named after an actual city feom Ancient Egypt, it made more sense having a monument that hardens back to that. It's just a shame it degraded into a Bass Pro Shop.
Las Vegas also has one.
Friend was an engineering student at U of Mem. He said while they were pouring the concrete for the pyramid, they hated the weekends. Seems every Monday they’d come and see where the concrete pour had sloughed over the weekend. Had to put off tying the top together cause the corner had settled so far, it had to be repoured. Structural cracks visible when they held the Titanic exhibition there on the ground floor. Gaps showing at least an inch wide all along it. See, the land it’s on was owned by a sherrif’s cousin, and you can beat there was much money passed under the table in the 80’s. Did an analysis and land had been a land fill and never compacted down. Wonder it’s still around but that’s how the “good ol southern boys” operate.
I live in middle TN and trust me Memphis is the rectum of the state.
The company I work for is in Tennessee. I spend a LOT of time all over Tennessee. I’m not poking to tell the fine people of Tennessee how to rum their state but I would suggest they at least explore the possibilities of giving West Tenn to Arkansas or something. Memphis doesn’t exactly fit with the rest of the state
@@darylb5564culturally Memphis has way more in common with Mississippi & Arkansas than Tennessee...it's the heart of that particular region called the Delta which goes from far-south Illinois all the way down through the delta's of Arkansas & Mississippi...I know we're talking bad about Memphis here but me personally I've always had a good time there
Born and raised here and that can't have been any more perfect a nickname for it
Middle TN ain't even TN anymore. Franklin and Brentwood especially is just fucking Californians.
I live in middle tennessee also and I agree with you a hundred percent. Rite on the other side of I 40 is Memphis's tallest skyscraper. It's completely abandoned & a couple of windows broken out at the top. The memphis bell used to sit right down on the waterfront. The citizens of memphis cared nothing for it and let it deteriorate horribly. It was removed and restored.Thank goodness. I think it's in Ohio now. Memphis is a lot like a third world country.
Been there it's pretty cool, the food was a little crazy but this was a few years ago
I drove by this when I was in Memphis with my dad. I told him about it and he couldn’t believe it.
