    On the South Bluffs of Memphis standing tall next to the Mississippi River, sits a rare feat: a professional sports arena that survived demolition and was succesfully repurposed. The Memphis Pyramid, which as of now boasts destination retail, once was a one of a kind arena, housing the NCAA tournament, legendary concerts and NBA playoff games. However neither one of those ideas was what the venue was originally intended for, and conspiracies surround its entire story. In this video, we'll explore the origins behind why someone wanted to build a stainless steel pyramid in Memphis Tennessee, why their original idea didn't work out, and how the venue survived demolition to become one of the most unique hospitality experiences in America.

    I worked for a scaffolding company and we got a contract to build some scaffolding hanging from the ceiling in the Memphis pyramid. 300+ feet high it was a permanent install one of the coolest installs I ever did with that company.

    I was at The Big Dig (the groundbreaking for when they first built the pyramid). Me, my mom and the guy she was dating and his kids all sat on top of a parking garage and watched as they had a helicopter fly in and drop a giant "shovel" made of lights into the spot with fireworks going off.

    Lol oh man.. I've lived in Memphis my whole life.. that intro talkin about how epic pyramids are, and already knowing how this story went had be facepalming lmao.. yeahh I have some good memories of going down there as a kid. Dad took me to watch the Tigers play a bunch of times, and I remember going for a few other events they held there as well.. so yeah, kinda sad for me.. although it's kinda cool, I guess, in it's own weird way? I just don't really have any reason to go there anymore.. A theme park or casino sounded kinda fun haha, but I really have no good ideas about what it could/should otherwise be either 🤷I can't imagine much else would surprise me more than it becoming a Bass Pro mega store though lmao 😅😅

  • @keijijohnson9754
    @keijijohnson9754 3 месяца назад +2

    First of all, you can screw right off woth that false title there. You were completely better off without adding in the word "Abandoned" there in all caps. And screw the DraftKings ad too.
    Second, while it's nice to see that there are more channels here doing videos on the Pyramid, speaking as a native here, there's not really much helping this city even if there was another attempt at making something as ambitious as that again. Especially with how crime ridden its been becoming more and more. There's a reason why it's known as the most dangerous city in the country numerous times.

    There is nothing about Memphis or any city in the US that makes me think, "yea, a giant steel and glass pyramid would be awesome here." Now with that being said.... Even worse of an idea a pyramid is in Memphis is having it enclose a Bass Pro store... Lmfao. There is no wildlife, hunting, fishing, or any other outdoor sport/activity has any relation with a pyramid. In my opinion anyway.. a concert venues/event center would make for a better fit.

    • @keijijohnson9754
      @keijijohnson9754 3 месяца назад

      Considering the fact that the city is named after an actual city feom Ancient Egypt, it made more sense having a monument that hardens back to that. It's just a shame it degraded into a Bass Pro Shop.

    Friend was an engineering student at U of Mem. He said while they were pouring the concrete for the pyramid, they hated the weekends. Seems every Monday they’d come and see where the concrete pour had sloughed over the weekend. Had to put off tying the top together cause the corner had settled so far, it had to be repoured. Structural cracks visible when they held the Titanic exhibition there on the ground floor. Gaps showing at least an inch wide all along it. See, the land it’s on was owned by a sherrif’s cousin, and you can beat there was much money passed under the table in the 80’s. Did an analysis and land had been a land fill and never compacted down. Wonder it’s still around but that’s how the “good ol southern boys” operate.

It's completely abandoned & a couple of windows broken out at the top. The memphis bell used to sit right down on the waterfront. The citizens of memphis cared nothing for it and let it deteriorate horribly. It was removed and restored.Thank goodness. I think it's in Ohio now. Memphis is a lot like a third world country.
