@@maxbile121 gameplay is amazing but everything else is meh at best. Guns weren’t as interesting as 3’s, jokes fell flat almost all the time much like 3, and the story was short and also pretty meh. I'll problem wait for a sale. I bought 3 (whatever the most expensive edition was until they added more dlc for next gen) it was under $30 and I STILL felt cheated with how bad that story was. I'll probably wait for a good sale to pick this up.
Borderlands 3 was the most disappointing game game of the last generation for me. I think I’ll wait for a sale of this one. Though I am happy Tiny Tina is back as a kid.
If borderlands 3 was disappointing to you then you did that to yourself making a better game than borderlands 2 is a near impossible task how do you make a better villain than jack when he’s considered to this day as one of the best video game villains in history it’s gotta be hard to do that twice in a row …borderlands 3 had a disappointing story but the gameplay was simply awesome Infact the gameplay loop is the best it’s ever been and thinking about to borderlands has always been about the gameplay loop
The story sucked but honestly other than the Telltale one I've never really cared for the writing in Borderlands games. BL3 on a pure gameplay level was fine.
It's a shame it doesn't seem to embrace D&D parody as much as Tiny Tina's Borderlands 2's DLC. I love me some Borderlands but I'll probably wait for a sale on the maxed out bundle. I still have B3's DLCs to play in the meantime anyway.
@@jodyboles8208 Because the DLC was a part of the BL2 game, and they could go crazy with it with no fears of cost and lose as the season pass covers the cost good or bad. This is a stand alone game, and they did not trust that a high focus on DnD would be good sell, instead the main focus should be Borderlands rather then Borderlands DnD. Hence this is less focused on DnD then the DLC for BL2. They lost touch with what fans wanted from Borderlands. BL3 was the worst story (even worse then 1 and that had barebone story), has terrible characters, and destroys much of the lore and universe of BL. BL3 ruined the series in many many ways. Rather then fix it or try to resolve it they instead decided to focus on one the last major selling items for BL and milk that (Hence Tiny Tina game). BUT again the lack of understanding the fans, resulted in them pulling away from what most fans wanted or expected.
@@BreezingThrou haha what? First off fans had no idea what so ever that such a game like this would happen. Of course it would be more borderlands than D&D. The core of it is still borderlands which isnt a bad thing. Also it doesnt make any sense to say this is less D&D than the dlc when this game easily has WAY more features and themes from D&D than the dlc ever had. You can literally make your own character, add different stats, multi class, travel on a D&D map and loads of other things like spells. So I dont see the problem here. Lastly bl3 didnt ruin the series at all. Sure the story wasnt great but all borderlands games story have been average at best. The lore is far from destroyed. In fact we actually got a ton of interesting lore that will be great to see played out in bl4.

Its quite short compared to normal Borderlands games, but its 100% worth it imo, especily since these days every new releases are just broken incomplete games, this one is refreshing
Thanks for the review! The biggest problem for the dumpster fire story of BL3 will be this game's biggest issue, Anthony Burch did not have a hand in writing it. His Tina Tina DLC was epic and him DM'ing the podcast Dungeons and Daddies shows he knows how to do D&D! I am going to wait for a sale on this one, since I was burned on BL3! Thanks again for the always fantastic review!
I'm not bothered about the exclusivity but I think I'll also wait until it's on a good sale. There's a game launching in less than two weeks to sink my teeth into, so I don't need another before then.

@@Beatnik2290 That's why you find a reviewer with similar tastes as you, that way you're pretty aligned with their takes. I agree with the OP here in that I look forward and hope ACG likes the game because I know if he doesn't, 9 times out of 10, I won't either - even if it is a franchise or genre I like. Case in point, this review, I love Borderlands and it sounds like he had some fun here, and if you're a fan, you'll like it. Great, that's right up my alley. Of course I'm going to use my own common sense here too. And after seeing how quickly BL3 went down to $10 at some retailers, I'll be waiting for a deep inevitable sale on this.
Very very interesting, it seems that they went back to the roots of BL 1 as far as the loot goes and I'm incredibly excited about that. End game dungeons are very well thought out in terms of structure, particularly from a loot perspective but I wonder if there's the equivalent of mayhem levels in already? Borderlands always has been about the insanity taking place after the story and they went out of their way with this one which you kind of glossed over
if a raider is shooting you with a shock smg in bl1, he'll drop that gun if he drops it. the other bl games don't do that. so you are saying this does that or not?
They announced that there will be 20 chaos levels and you unlock higher and higher tiers by clearing the randomly generated dungeons they have for endgame. They also said scaling won’t be as steep as previous so you can reliably use items for multiple chaos levels without constantly reframing every tier.
agreed. BL1 is still my favorite BL to replay. i love the slower pace, the not so crazy weapons and the more classic RPG feel. hoping this one gives more of that feeling.
Especially since farming for weapons will be completely worthless on a couple months to a year because they'll constantly nerf and buff weapons. Plus probably increase level caps. Bl3 was absolutely terrible with those things
@@carpathianhermit7228 bl2 was an amazing game, but instead of getting better they went backwards in a real way. There's a way of keeping games the same and improving (Uncharted, AC for example). True...but It's clear they only do the bare minimum for this franchise with each iteration. Disappointment is baked into their games at this point. At least sell it for $50 since they will no doubt sell us $100 worth of content down the road.

Besides wanting the story to be good. I hope we can actually run around with melee only? If gearbox doesn't allow that, and melee is only 3 seconds action skills that's going to be a real stupid miss opportunity.
Don't know if melee only is viable for endgame but do know they added a 5th weapon slot for melee weapons so you have melee weapon loot so definitely more than melee magic your talking about
Honestly the melee is very lacking compared to the wealth of good options these days. They really were a bit lazy with it. A little more inspiration from vermintide 2 or something would have gone a long way. Having said that I think pure melee builds where you alternate between normal melee swings and your action skill nukes will be very possible and there will be a good amount of dual class possibilities for it.
I hoped in something more different myself, but if it's more Borderlands I'm in anyway. I mean, personally, I'm not tired of this series, yet. Thanks for your videos!
I loved Tiny Tina when BL2 came out, but I also loved Gearbox's humour back then. Nowadays not so much, so I'd probably have a hard time getting through this as well.
I usually appreciate your honest reviews, but this one seemed more like an introduction to the game than an actual review of it. I'm still just as much on the fence.
Biggest fumble for me is not releasing on Steam day one, which means since they are making me wait 6 month, I will make them wait an additional 6 months before they get my money, if at all.
Really excited for this one, Borderlands was always great to play with my buddies. Although I'm not a fan of Gearbox's DLC policy and stuff, will probably get it on sale at some point.

I’ve been playing splitscreen with my brother on latest gen Xbox and it’s been really fun. Only a a couple of issuses, a few areas did cause stuttering/frame drops and a few times pop ups wouldnt go away like the death save and trade
Played Borderlands 1, 2, The Pre-Squel, and a bit of 3. Bought it for 35 dollars (base + season pass). I feel good about that unlike other games I bought that have a similar price. I really like the writing. I actually listen to the dialogue and enjoy it. "Babies will cry! More than usual." That caught me off guard and I had a good feeling about the writing. Combat is also really good. Using Spore Warden and the spells and action skills feel really smooth even in early game because the cooldowns blend well. I'm playing on the highest difficulty, but BL2 is harder. Although it may be because there's more options now and there's a faster build up to your kit and dmg unlike previous games. Looting is alright. I haven't seen a lot of unique weapons yet, but it's funny how they implemented fantasy into the weapons. I found a gun that flies and shoots enemies when you reload it. The enemy diversity is kinda meh. Skeletons, Goblins, Orcs, Cyclops, Humans, and Coiled. The bosses are plenty though. Overall, I like it better than 1, The Pre-Sequel, and 3. The pacing is better than 2 in terms of story and combat difficulty, but 2 is still really strong in other aspects.
As long as the combat feels as good as 3, I'm in. It's the only reason I enjoyed every minute of that game even though the story left much to be desired.
@@TheMakAbideth Plus the build variety in this game is the best in the series IMO, giving you access to 6 skill trees you can use any 2 of instead of the standard same 3 for every character.
Yeah, I thought she would be able to change the level up as your playing in real time or maybe you see her looking down from above and she can roll dice and they are gigantic rolling through your level smashing into things then she could call in different enemies from rolling certain numbers and you can shoot the dice to stop the new enemies from spawning in? I'm saying to mix the board game aspects into the live action parts more but to feel like that is what's going on, like that would be the uniqueness to the game, almost like what they are doing at the table is reflecting what's going on and what your seeing as your in fp running around the level, so all of a sudden here come big dice flying in bc someone is rolling at the table, maybe someone spills a drink then a flood comes raging in things that really change up the level. It's hard to fully explain it but you get the idea, that would be cool to me. Lol
Looks fun, really wish they had stepped out just a liiiittle bit more from Borderlands and really put in that fantasy/dnd element. I'll wait till the GOTY is on Steam.
Windmill high five after sex hahaha! Thanks for your honest opinion man. I am so looking forward to this, it I think it’s a bummer they didn’t embrace D&D more.
As someone who has a couple thousand hours into borderlands 1, 2 and 3, this Is definitely my personal favorite in the series for a multitude of reasons and I absolutely love the direction they took this game. Honestly, if we don't get a Wonderlands 2 I'll be hella disappointed. The change to a fantasy aesthetic affects A LOT more than you'd think and the writing in my opinion is close to Borderlands 2 in terms of quality, I honestly think it being bumped down to T for teen did the game a lot of good in multiple way, specifically the writing. it's a actually LESS cringey and less juvenile than previous games. I do miss the gore a little though but all the crazy magic particle effects more than make up for it.
Thanks for writing this! I've been on the fence, mostly due to not hearing about it much and being slightly disappointed with 3, but I think I'll get it. One thing I'm curious about, if you don't mind giving some input...how's the replayability?
So i understand ACG to say, buy if you are a fan, and unspoken, wait for sale if not? Is this the same interpretation others are getting from the review? I have done very well for the most part in purchasing games recommended on this channel and strongly consider the Buy recommended games.
They shouldve done more, there is less gun variety about 10 or so spells, classes with only 1 tree (i get that you can mix and match but its worse than the tailored 4 classes. They even had such a great opportunity to create amazing classes based on D&D but fumbled imo) and i just feel like the tone of the series is changing maybe aiming more for 14-16yr
To be fair to the spells, they take the grenade spot right, there were less types in grendaes, the only reason they felt so varied was all the different effects taking place on base variants(base variants being how they were delivered and how there damage was dealt, homing, mirv, bouncy better, lobbed, teleport and wether it was a burst of damage, dot, or elemental) the spells are the same way with honestly with a few more base variants, but same as grenades where parts and rarity greatly vary there effect, for example, a sigil spell can be stuck the character in a small area mostly reducing damage you, or some are creating an aoe with a singularity, some create an aoe with hydra turrets, others still heal and increase your outgoing damage, and some just create a damaging/slowing field, and that’s just what I have found for sigil spells alone, in both the other borderlands games and this one the only exceptions to base variant types are legendaries and uniques which are allowed to break the standard rules of Grenades and spells
The tress is a bit of a letdown but with multi classing and hero points it does help bridge the gap a bit, in the future they are adding more classes to (I know dlc) but that should help further the variety of gameplay, with any luck they may add new trees to the existing classes like they did with bl3 which would solve a lot of that particular problem
This might be a wait for me, especially if it takes a minute to fix the slow textures. I will wait to see how good Tina is as the DM, think that will be the biggest factor for me and I won't get any info on if I will like that till I can watch a stream or part of a play through.
This looks cool, but having melee focused classes when you only get the "click right stick fps gun butt smash" animation as the extent of melee is pretty disappointing.
This is really a shooter game more than anything else. That's why its melee combat is so basic. If you wanted more melee features, there are plenty of melee-focused games around.
Great analysis man, loving the content! I can't stop playing Elden ring so this one will have to wait for myself. I really like how you took a major deep dive into Elden rings review. My love for the game grows even deeper
I ended up liking B3 a lot more than expected, but it's a little sad they aren't leaning full-blast into TT D'n'D DM craziness... which was what made the DLC so much fun. Still, potentially a great game. Eventually.
Hmm i dunno, the forced LGBT and the instanced based small areas make it hard for me to like it. Im used to big, open maps with hubs, and switching from small area to arena, and to the overworld just seems very slow and redundant to me. Also i can't farm bosses, so that sucks big time
it will be on sale with Dying Light 2 and Elden Ring during the Spring/Summer annual sale on Xbox. just wait like a month people and get those games then. stop paying full price
Toggling between borderless full screen and full screen seems to fix all the issues that will pop up like stutter, random low fps, and low red textures
Im sooo hyped for this. I love the Borderlands series. Cant wait to spends a few weeks running around with my friend killing things and laughing at the silliness.
Yea honestly I was hoping for the choice between magic, guns, and melee. Magic is mostly elemental,guns/bows is pure damage, and melee would be a mix of both
The biggest problem I had with BL3 was that legendary weapons dropped wayy too much & there wasnt another rarety above them. Made the game really boring, so Im hoping we get a new rarety above legendary in this game.
yeah Borderlands 2 had more rarities and made the game last much longer i felt. BL3 had the anointments which were rare to get but essentially that just came the norm anyway to have anointments. Hopefully there is more to it here a bit. if not, i guess that's why they have so many classes and abilities to make that replayable.
that, and only maybe 10 out of like 50 or something were actually worth using. The focus also changed from gun rarity to finding the one with the proper anointment which is just another layer of rng. I think you can reroll the anointment now, but still.
Borderlands is one of my top 3 game franchise across all platforms. It used to be a game for adults with adult themes and a cartoon visual graphic style. Now it seems to just be a cartoon.

I agree, this really looks like a copy and paste of BL3 but with a fantasy twist
Issue with bl3 the annointments where the main source of a lot of damage on weapons. So that messed up the game from the start
I hope they learned and the enchantments aren’t broken
I've been playing Wonderlands now for maybe 30hrs and I enjoy this game a great deal. This game is certainly a Borderlands game and, in my opinion, it very much succeeds at being a fun and highly repayable experience for fans of the franchise.

@@maxbile121 gameplay is amazing but everything else is meh at best. Guns weren’t as interesting as 3’s, jokes fell flat almost all the time much like 3, and the story was short and also pretty meh. I do not recommend this game. It was such a let down. Poor graphics, weapons feel the same, worse skill trees. Just an all around disappointment.
I'll problem wait for a sale. I bought 3 (whatever the most expensive edition was until they added more dlc for next gen) it was under $30 and I STILL felt cheated with how bad that story was. I'll probably wait for a good sale to pick this up.

It's a shame it doesn't seem to embrace D&D parody as much as Tiny Tina's Borderlands 2's DLC.
I love me some Borderlands but I'll probably wait for a sale on the maxed out bundle. I still have B3's DLCs to play in the meantime anyway.
how does it embrace it even less than the dlc did??
i really enjoyed the BL2 Tiny Tina DLC, i was hoping for more of that with this one, probably just wait for sale
I'm not sure you understand the type of game this or borderlands actually is...

Lol

Yes.
Really appreciate this review, been going back and forth on this one. I think I'll wait for a sale.
I will wait to see how good Tina is as the DM, think that will be the biggest factor for me and I won't get any info on if I will like that till I can watch a stream or part of a play through.
and the timed epic exclusive which may turn people off
Great review as always you had me rolling with your descriptions.
