May I take the opportunity here to express that you should invest so much into AI.
Programs like Gigapixel AI or Sharpen AI are doing amazing, truly amazing job, and I would love to have the power of Adobe to do all that even better.
Sharpen AI in particular allows me to deblur an image with a small camera shake, which is something you think would be impossible to do but it does it marvelously. It blows my mind each time I use it.

It's good to read that you're determined to focus on the masking capabilities - I certainly do hope that includes adding manual masking overrides into this tool. And maybe someday, Adobe will work with making the paint/erase cursor more visible in the workspace so that most of us don't have to guess where it is on a neutral background. Sigh ...

► For those of you who have concerns over the absence of manual focus masking at 10:59: Many of you are suggesting using the masking tools inside neural filters. Please note that it is nothing but a simple mask that you can anyway add in Photoshop, and it only controls in which areas the "overall" effect shows up or hides (whether blurred or in focus). That's a good idea if you want to bring back certain things, and it might work in some cases. However, it may result in unnecessary halos. Also, here's the actual problem; how will you defocus the things that are mistakenly kept in focus? The only way to do that is adding blur later, manually, defeating this feature's purpose. It isn't like Luminar's Portrait Bokeh AI, where you can absolutely control which areas to blur and which ones to keep in focus.

Thanks for the review. You can manipulate the mask in Depth Blur - look at the toolbar on the left hand-side (circle with + and circle with -). As soon as you click on one of them you can use the "Select subject", "Invert", etc then add or subtract from the mask using the circle with + or circle with - .

Hi Lyne, thank you for your feedback. But those tools are only for selections and create a simple mask. They can remove the effect from certain areas just as a normal mask would, but will not add blur (defocus) in areas where required.

you are right. I myself tried using those plus and minus sign. you can actually add or remove the neural filter effect from any area in your image. as there is no flow option to make the mask smooth. you can always use opacity in top left corner. it will act as a flow for masking.

Unmesh, I agree with all of your points. I've been testing this beta feature out for a bit, and it makes some very odd choices, e.g., keeping portions of the background in focus, while blurring other parts of the same object. And, as you say, the selected focus is entirely too sharp. I realize that this is a beta tool, and Adobe is using us to get feedback in order to know what works, what doesn't and what do people really need, but I'm surprised that they haven't added tools for manually adjusting the mask. They've got all that technology in PS, and it doesn't seem too hard to add it into this tool. As it is, I can run the blur feature twice and mask out any pieces I don't want, blending two images. But at that point, I can just do it the old fashioned way.

After watching this video, I quickly tried it out with a very simple picture of mine (bird on a stick), and there were still significant issues (e.g. edges of the branch were blurred making it look unnatural, certain branches of the branch missing). If I can't even do such a simple picture near perfectly, I don't really see the point of it in its current state (I may as well just do the masking and blurring manually).

Thank you for demonstrating these features, good work. It‘s a nice touch to have these options in PS. However, since it’s still not working perfectly, it turns out that you end up fiddling with software glitches in time consuming adjustments and repairs. Adding grain to correct a photo? Wow... My take for everybody would be to master your camera and know more about photography, e. g. DOF settings for starters.

For "The Biggest Problem", why can't you just output the depth blur on a different layer, then do the appropriate masking on that layer, blending in the original from underneath?

    • @PiXimperfect
      @PiXimperfect  2 года назад

That's a good idea. However, it has one problem. That way, we can only bring back the focus in certain areas, but not defocus something. If we do wish to defocus, we will require additional manual blur, hence nullifying the whole point of this automatic feature.

How about just setting it as smart filter under output and just mask out the sections it missed?

    Great video!
So I just tried this on an image I took with a Samsung smartphone. I thought the result, with a small reduction in opacity was pretty amazing. Maybe I just got lucky, but I think this might be a good starting point for some small adjustments. No, I wouldn't use it to print a high resolution image without some small changes, but for social media sharing I thought it looked pretty great! Maybe it has improved a bit since the video?

think a photographer or an editor needs to be a project manager at Adobe for these projects, to get an on ground perspective for these s/w. They just dont seem to know what is required at the end user.

Great review as always, and I'm glad to see the iterations in these filters is improving. On one level I applaud Adobe and Luminar's AI efforts to streamline workflow and provide extended options for post production, but the truth is, software will never be a viable substitute for what you should have done correctly at time of capture, there are just too many variables. And while I understand the "but what if" reasons for having tools like these as a last resort, we shouldn't be shooting with the expectation that we can add depth of field in post. If you take the art of photography seriously, master the craft, don't depend on software to make up for your deficiencies after the fact. In a pinch you might get away with it in a low resolution social media post, but in a professional fine art or editorial print this would never fly.

When you output first layer you can shit+ctrl+f a few times as needed and you'll get a more in-depth blur. 😊 Thankyou for your continued support. 😊

You could bring back areas that have been blurred mistakenly by outputing the result as a new layer, then masking or the parts that shouldn't be blurred to show the unedited image underneath. It's not perfect but it would do the job.

Ps always crashes when I use neural filters I have tried everything. I have the lastest version of PS as well. They claimed the update would fix that but its not.

    Great Video.
You're right about doing the masking by hand.

Try Camers Raw Filter and slide the texture slider to the left. It worked for me without frequency separation.

I love how Luminar nowadays challenges Adobe. But for me Luminar is not very practical as blur only works with people, not with e.g. a car. Adobe "subject" does.

Ehhh, nah, as long as there's the option to output the depth pass, I'm happy. Great video as always.
