60 years with type 1 Doug here. Congrats on 10,000 subscribers. You deserve it.
I too use an Apple Watch to reflect my Dexcom readings. I empathize with you about bad pump sites. After being on the pump for about 25 years, I have run out of locations not full of scar tissue. There are some days that require 2 site changes in a single day. I recently found that reaching around and firing away into the upper butt works GREAT, but my belt can rub against it all day causing that location to fail. My wish is for you “beginners” LOL, to be cured in the next ten years. Even after 60 years, I will not give in. Lastly, what is your thesis topic ?
Michelle, I know your struggles. You are one tough diabetic. You will lose many battles but never lose your determination. You will be cured.
Thank you so much Doug! I can imagine it would be hard to find a site after 25 years on the pump! Your hard work and determination with T1D after 60 years really inspires me :). I also hope there is a cure soon.
My thesis topic is on the safety of MRI contrast agents and measuring their retention in the human body.
Before I set a new OmniPod or FreeStyle Libre, I check the site by pressing e.g. with the backside of a sewing needle. If it hurts, I choose another site, if not, I found the right place. I guess, if it hurts, there a nerve or a capillary under the skin, which makes the pump site useless or at least painful.
Hope I could help and...happy diaversary!And...thanks a lot for your work you do with this Channel. Wish I could have it 28 years ago... 🙂
Michael Brosemann great tip about the sewing needle! I’ve just returned to using a pump and have had 3 fails within 3 weeks, some of them being quite painful. I am going to try your testing method and am very happy I came across your comment.
What an awesome tip!! Thanks for sharing it with us 😀
Michelle! I so appreciate the honesty of this vlog, as always! I hate that you had two sites go bad (especially during your Diaversary!!) and also I totally feel you in the site failure! I find pump site failures really trigger me to feel burnt out, but sometimes it’s just not avoidable 😑 seeing you deal with it practically and calmly gives me the confidence to do the same! I like the top of my thigh for infusion sets. I find the absorption to be good there because of the blood flow from using my legs to walk. Wishing you a wonderful day! ♥️
Thank you so much Andrea!! It is so easy to feel burnt out with bad pump sites, but like you said, it's unavoidable! I haven't tried the top of my thigh in a really long time actually, maybe it's time to test it out again! Thanks for the suggestion ❤️☺️
Hi Michelle!
Greetings from Ukraine!
Thank you for videos!
I love it becouse they are about real T1D live, rear BGs.
This year October was my 10 years with T1D. I decided to give yourself a Medtronic insulin pump and forget about multiple shoots.
Stomach and Humalog in pump works great!
Hello! Thank you so much for watching 😊❤️
I use a cartridge pen and regular finger prick testing. Because currently (Honeymooning LADA) I only use fast acting when required for extra carby goodies and my stomach, where I inject is fine but I do notice bumps on my fingers as I can only use 3 fingers on each hand (the underside (as it bleeds more reliably) of index, middle and little fingers but not my fourth fingers as they are both scarred with old suture scars and don’t bleed well) to finger prick.
Hi Michelle
This is my first time watching your vlog. I have been a typo 1 diabetic for 20 years. Plus I’m a brittle diabetic. So I recently got a new pump. Tandem X2 slim. I recently got trained for it. But 2 days ago I had to do 3 different site changes in 1 day! Needless to say it was frustrating! So I totally get it. My favorite site is my stomach.
I love anywhere on my abdomen and my arms for insulin absorption. Occasionally, I’ll use my thighs for long acting, but never for fast acting. I love your videos! ❤️
That's interesting that you use your thighs only for long acting. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for watching ☺️
I don't get bad sites very often, but for me they are always bleeders when I remove the infusion.
hi Michelle, greetings frpm the U.S., thanks for the vlogs, you inspire guys like me who have been diabetic FOREVER. HAPPY DIAIVERSARY!
Thank you!! 💙
Thanks fir all your help Michell. After 20 years plus on a pump, the stomach areas are usually the best. Sometimes thighs work alright but not as consistently as well as the stomach . But as you know, at times even stomach sites so amuck. Shalom. Lance
Congrats from Nova Scotia on the 10K subscribers. We have been fans from the beginning and our 11 year old T1 daughter (also a dancer)loves watching you. Keep up the great videos, Michelle 🇨🇦.
Favorite pump site is definitely my arms. I hate it when you are high and you try to correct and the insulin just seems to be useless. Me: “Hmmm I’ll take a few units and that’ll bring me down.” My body: “Nope lol I’m staying high.” ⬆️⬆️⬆️❗️❗️
Haha omg yes! It's insane how stubborn high blood sugars can be! It's like the insulin doesn't work, then a couple hours later I will all of a sudden start crashing 😛
Hey. Jacobe do you hear about rules 500 and 200? When calculating total insulin intake throughout the day, you can get the number of insulin units needed to reduce blood sugar, for example, 14 to 6mmlo. If my blood shuger go up to 14 I need 4units of insulin to get down my suger to 6. You probly need more insulin to get down blood suger :)
Your arm? I never thought about putting it in my arm. I put my sensor in my arm but how to you avoid getting caught up in the tubing from your pump? Or are you using an omipod?
Katie Petersen you could put the tubing through ur shirt
Love this little video and the blood sugar translations
I started off with the Medtronic Paradigm Mio 6mm like the pink ones you're using but also experienced 2 bad sites in one week. So I switched to the Medtronic Paradigm Mio 9mm and that tiny difference in cannula depth has made all the difference. Turns out the guidelines mention that the 6mm is just for kids and extra skinny people, and 9mm is better suited to normal/full size/overweight adults. Michelle, you might want to consider giving the 9mm ones a try if this bad sites problem continues...
What a great suggestion!! Right now I am using the 6mm, so maybe the 9mm would work better! If I have more issues, I will definitely consider switching. Thank you!
Congrats on 10k! That's a big milestone.
I've been T1 for 23 years and have always used my stomach for shots, but lately getting bleeding quite often.
Glucometers have sometimes given me different results but not that badly. Here's hoping you have a more stable New Year.
Thank you! 😊 I'm sorry you are getting bleeding with your shots 👎
It is crazy no matter how many times you do an insertion you still kind of flinch, glad to know I am not the only one lol
haha you definitely aren't the only one 😂
Hi Michelle,
thank you so much for your videos :-) I’ve been using the pump for 11 years and decided to use Lantus and Afrezza instead.
Looks like it’s working so much better for me!
Please do a video on Afrezza, I strongly believe it will help so many people control their blood sugar’s better.
Thanks,
MikeDee
Awww...so sorry your having these issues with your site. I don't use a pump but I inject on my tummy as well. I haven't felt bumps but I do rotate where I inject. Loved that you bought yourself a hat. My go-to treat is going to a coffee shop for a sugary, creamy latte. But, I'm trying to find non food ways to treat myself. A nice sweater, massage, manicure, tummy smelling candle.
Thank you! Haha yeah I saw the hat and was like "that's cute, I'll get that instead of dessert" 😂. Your non-food treats are a fantastic idea!
Love these chatty videos Michelle! Hope the sites are behaving this week and the thesis is going ok - nearly time for a proper break over the holidays yay! Love xx
Aww thank you Jen! That mean a lot coming from you ☺️❤️
Hi Michelle. Thank you for sharing your personal experiences with us. You’re such a great resource for every issue I’ve encountered on my journey. Please keep your videos and good luck with your Thesis!
Up
Thank you so much! I'm so glad my videos have come in handy ❤️
I sympathise! Writing up my thesis was one of the most stressful times of my life, it didn’t help that I was also diagnosed with a rare genetic disease and diabetes while I was in the middle of it all! It’s such a relief when it’s finished and handed in, you’ll feel amazing! Do you have a thesis viva in Canada? Passing my viva was the greatest feeling ever and I was so proud when I graduated, it’s worth all the hard work, even though sometimes I doubted it! Diabetes certainly makes it all a lot more interesting! 🙄 Good luck with it all 😊.
Oh my goodness someone else who understands the thesis writing struggles! Plus two serious diagnoses while writing?! Omg I can't even imagine 😱. Good for you for pushing through and getting it done ❤️.
Yes we have a thesis viva here, but we call it a thesis defence. I'm aiming to have mine sometime in April or May, it depends when I finish writing. I cannot wait to be done!
Dr Michelle Lord has a great ring to it this channel is amazing glad I found you
Love your videos! I’ve been a type one for 2 months now you’re videos and advice are really helpful!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad that my videos have helped 😊
Michelle. Just subbed your channel. I’m going from a Medtronic pump to the tandem. I have been with Medtronic for20 years. I hope will like the tandem with the extra steps to reloading the reservoir. I am 66 and have been on insulin since I was 18. I to am looking for more sites than my stomach as I have many bumps from infusion. Thank you for your video.
Oh snap I have two cameos in this video :) Great video as always Michelle, thanks for celebrating my bday with me!
You always steal the show Tomas! You will have to make another appearance before vlogmas is over!
@@MichelleLord I would love to!! :D
I use my arms and legs for my pump, they both work great! My Dexcom is the most accurate when it’s on my arm, so I keep it there as well! Every now and then I’ll take the Dexcom off for a week just to give my skin a chance to heal! The skin on my stomach gets super irritated and itchy if I put my pump or CGM on it, so I’ve just stopped using my stomach as a sight! U could try using your putter thigh as a pump sight, it’s always worked great for me! 😊
Thanks for the suggestions 😊! I've tried my thigh a few times and it never works out. I think I'm going to do an arm site soon though!
My favorite pump site is my stomach or my lower back. I find my blood sugars are the best in these two spots. Love your videos!!
Great spots! and thank you 😀
I literally laughed out loud when you said you were feeling sorry for yourself so you bought a hat! That's something I do too, sometimes! Lol! And I think it's perfectly acceptable by the way!
Do the bumps dissapear after a while if you don't put your site there?
I hope your blood sugars are better now! And happy late diaversary!
Much love! ♥
Haha thank you so much💙! I'm happy with my hat :). Yes, the bumps go away after awhile if I give the area a break.
It is also good to massage the place with bumps, they will go away faster
I just had 3 omnipod failures in 1 day!
Love watching your videos Michelle 💖💖💖
Aww thank you Paloma! That really means a lot 💖
I like putting my Omnipod on my arms. I'm still new to it... But I find that the arm is the spot that's least likely to get jostled or irritated.
Nice! I feel like so many Omnipod users wear their pod on their arm. It must be a good site :)
Favourite pump sight is my lower back/ hips ... I have never done it in my tummy due to nerves
Thanks for sharing 😊! I used to do my lower back and hips all the time when I was a kid, but for some reason it doesn't work for me anymore.
Hey Michelle, Firstly I am so sorry to hear that your pump site didn't work! have you ever had that happen but when you pull off the pump site blood gushes out as if it has hit a vain or something? And secondly, I know you have mentioned it before, but what glucose monitor do you have again? I have the libre and would love to swap over to the one you use so I can get my levels on my apple watch as well!.
Hi! Yes I had that happen to me once (where the blood was gushing out of my site), and it actually coincided with when I was in DKA! I use the Dexcom G5! You could always get your levels on the watch with your Libre as well. My friend Nerdabetic has a whole video on that :) ruclips.net/video/-w7pvPGuB0Q/видео.html&frags=pl%2Cwn
I use pens and my favourite spot for injecting is also my stomach because it absorbs the insulin faster and also it's easy than putting through arm. I have been using pens since 13 yrs.
I agree, the stomach really absorbs insulin well ☺️
@@MichelleLord You are really inspiring for me and I really love to watch your videos as they are very much related to me....love you...😘😘 from India.
Hi I have type one diabetes for almost a year now I just got my pump
My favorite site for the pump I don’t really have one yet because I just got it for the Dexcom definitely my butt
I got diagnosed at North York General Hospital AUG 24 th 1988 at 230 am
That winter scene was that the Aurora winter festival with the ferris wheel if so that's cool I did the security there it was so cold hahahaha
The universe wanted you to have a 'sweet' 16...
Abdomen has always been my preferred injection site. Overused one spot to the point I no longer inject there. Turned into a painful spot, bad enough to wonder if I had appendicitis and ended up getting an ultrasound to see if there was something going on there. Nope, just messed up a layer of tissue. Drove home the point to me that I need to expand the area of injection sites I use.
Ahaha Sweet Sixteen 😂!! I love it!!
That is so crazy that you used one spot so much that you thought you had appendicitis 😱
@@MichelleLord An area, 2" x 3" it was an area with a bit of fat, and no injection pains, used it for a good 12-15 years. The pain wasn't while injecting, it was sharp stabbing pains in the area throughout the day (hence the thoughts of apendicitis flare up). After the 'all clear, we can't see nothing wrong' I put together that I got the pains for a couple days when I injected in that area. While I always rotated injection to injection, I just favored one area in that quadrant a bit too much.
I do injections...my favorite site for those is my belly. I've actually never used anywhere else. Favorite dexcom site is my outer arm, either side. I've been diabetic (CFRD, Cystic Fibrosis related Diabetes) for about 18 months, I wish I knew my exact date...because of the CF I've been high risk for a while and I have been monitoring my sugars for many years, but just started the insulin 18 months ago or so.
I also love the Dexcom arm site! I'm sorry you developed CFRD :(. I hope you are doing well 💖
@@MichelleLord Thanks! Things are going pretty well. Despite the new challenges, I am feeling very grateful for the online CF and Diabetes community (and grateful for many other things) this time of year.
Hey Michelle - I know it's been a while - but I wanted to ask what your thesis was about. I don't know - maybe you talk about it in another vlog. If you do maybe you can leave me the link?
I think you can be so proud of yourself what you've become what you've achieved ;-)
Hey! You are the first subscriber to ask to read my PhD thesis haha! Here is the link... warning it is super long :p
macsphere.mcmaster.ca/handle/11375/24801
And thanks so much, I'm very proud of finishing my PhD :)
Hello Michelle Thank you for your video as usual nice to hear from you..
Diabet is the main subject so dont be sorry.
I have the Omnipod it is great I prefer to place it on the top of my arms no problem with the insuline.
But I started to place it in the back side it was ok but I had a pb as my omipod came off due to my movements I dont know but I prefer now arms better side
Hi! Thank you so much! I have seen a lot of people use their arms for the Omnipod. I'm glad it works well for you there 😊
These are so fun :D And my fav site is my stomach and my thighs.. also my sorta lower back area works ok-ish :D
Thanks! That's awesome that your thighs work well for you😊! My thighs are not good for insulin absorption.
Hi Michelle, just wondering why you chose the 90 degree infusion set instead of the Angled set? Do you ever suffer from sites bleeding when you insert ? Thank you !
Linda Lorenzoni Hi! I used angled sets for about 10 years, but I found they were causing scarring! The 90 degree sets for some reason don’t cause as much scarring (for me at least).
Linda Lorenzoni and yes, I’ve had a few sites bleed, but it is pretty rare to have that happen.
I manually give myself insulin and my favorite site is the far outer thigh (I hope that makes since, idk how to explain it). It hurts less most of the time.
Nice! So many people use their thighs, but it has never worked that well for me. Maybe I should try it again!
My fave sites with injections was my stomach and legs. My fave pump site is my stomach.
How did you sync your sensor to your iwatch? I have a freestyle libre and I don't see the app on my watch.
Hate when my site is in bad place I have scar tissue bad. How do you get Apple Watch to show sugars??? My site place was stomach but now I have to put on hip area
I use the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor. The Dexcom App on my phone transmits my blood sugar reading to my Apple Watch :)
Ugh that’s so frustrating babe! Hope you’re doing better now! My fav spot is my arm but I would agree with you that my stomach is the best for absorption for me as well...Probably because that’s where I have the most fat 😝😝
Thanks girl! I literally just did my site in my arm yesterday to switch things up, and the absorption is pretty good! 😊
Hmmmm... a little shocked to find another T1D person in GTA getting married in March 2019, and was proposed to in December 2017. I always use stomach/love handle areas . . . never had issues, but I do purposefully keep a little pudge on to help provide easy sites for my medtronic paradigm (Quickset).
No way!! That is A LOT of similarities haha. Congrats on your upcoming wedding! ❤️
@@MichelleLord March 23 will be our date. I hope you also have an awesome wedding! (I am trying to use my legs for glucose sensor sites, as the scars last forever and I have a strapless dress!).
You are great🤗
Aww thank you 😊
@@MichelleLord 🤗
Please keep up your videos!
My go to site with the pump is in my back ngl you don’t even feel it
Yay Michelle! **words of encouragement** :D
Haha thank you!! 😀
inject in lower stomach, and put my dexcom upper stomach- if i inject in upper stomach it hurts so much !!
I am from Australia and 15 years old and have had type 1 diabetes for 6 months !
Feliz navidad guapa! 🙏🎄
Feliz Navidad!! ❤️❤️
We have the same diaversary!!
I enjoy your videos.
What watch face are you using?
It's called "X-large" :)
Michelle Lord Awesome thanks! BTW my girlfriend was diagnosed back in April. The channel has been amazing. Total game changer.
Sorry to hear this if you need a Diabuddy close by please message me I feel your pain Luv
The hat looks cute 😊
Thank you! I'm obsessed with it and wearing it all the time now 😂
My favorite pump sites are back, legs
My favorite shot locations
belly, legs
Nice! Seems like you have some good options ☺️
@@MichelleLord ilysm😊❤
My favorite injection site are my thighs because they don’t hurt (Not that the shots hurt at all)
Nice! 😊
I will have had T1D for 30 yrs in April 2019 :-)
im a warrior! lol
Wow, you are definitely a warrior 😊
You are very pretty without the make up!🤗🤗🤗
Thank you!
hey I love watching your video
Thank you!! :D
Tummy too 😊
Yes! It's the best! :)
My best absorption is the back of my arms...but my sites start to hurt by day 2 because i use my arms more and am a side sleeper. My stomach can be good but if im really active my sites fall off easily. I want to use my lower back abive my bum but they always hurt going in and i manually insert my sites so its gotta be a good day for me to be willing to do it 😂
Ooo yes the arms are good, but I always get my site caught on something haha 😂
I agree, the lower back and bum do hurt!
It probably helps i use sure T's on my arms and cover the needle part with tegaderm...im notorious for being a bit to 'rough' with my sites so sure Ts are the only way to ensure I don't waste sites. It must just be a sensitive area, wasnt sure if it was just me being a wimp 😅
HHAAHA the hat ❤️
Haha I love my new diaversary hat 😊😛
Waiting for your dance video too
Haha hopefully one day soon! It's hard to film in my studio without being disruptive to the rest of the class.
Love u Michelle...can u upload some videos with your fiance
Awww thank you ❤️! Yes I should really have him in more videos! He has been sick with a bad cold, but once he gets better I will have him in the rest of vlogmas ☺️
@@MichelleLord oh thanku Michelle for response😘😘❤❤
