13:01 The "script ohio" is a famous tradition of the marching band. It's considered an honor to dot the "i". It's their literal signature move and they've been doing it since 1936.
Throughout the season the honor is reserved for graduating seniors. In lieu of that, the drum major will take position to dot the "i", most notably at the OSU- _ichigan game
Very few non-band members have ever dotted the "i" in Script OHIO. Some of the more notable honorees include comedian Bob Hope, astronaut and US Senator from Ohio John Glenn, and golf legend and Ohio State alumni Jack Nicklaus. All three have ties to the state of Ohio. 🤠
The Ohio signature is just 'Ohio', but the more impressive part is how they cross lines while moving, over and over, without running into each other. It requires PRECISE timing, over and over.

If you’d have actually been paying attention to the video then you’d have heard the announcer explain that Script Ohio is a famous long-standing tradition performed by the OSUMB. They’ve been doing it since 1936 and it’s the most well known tradition in college football, and has now become famous and recognizable around the world. It’s how they end every one of their pregame shows. It hasn’t always been a Sousaphone player who would dot the I. In the very beginning it was a trumpet player who would, but later got changed to a Sousaphone player so that it would be more visible and actually look more like an I dot.
I grew up watching the band do all kinds of fantastic routines. They are definitely a huge part of the culture of Columbus Ohio; the same as the college football team. The Alumni Band, as well as former player on the teams throughout the years, are huge draws at charitable events--we honor them quite a lot. Their sort of unofficial nickname is "TBDBITL" which means, "The Best Damned Band In The Land". One other little thing; the band members movements are extremely well coordinated; from their chop-like arm-swings, to their diced-minced steps. Oh, and yes, the Zuzsaphone player dotting the eye is a tradition honoring whoever dot's the "I". In their home stadium, there's usually 110,000 people seeing those guys be stationed there, not including the millions watching on TV. We've had many non-band members honored by dotting the I; world leaders, civic leaders, entertainers, former players and coaches. Dotting the I is a bag deal to this subset of Ohio Culture! I didn't think I'd have this much to say; but they are the best marching band in the world.
His comment was now that we have shown you what we have in common we are going to show you a long standing tradition in college football - the famous "Script OHIO" - this is done at every pre-game at OSU Stadium - we are the ONLY band that does this - and every time a senior tuba (sousaphone) player get to "dot the I" in Ohio! This is The Ohio State University Marching Band!! This is our tradition!! They are singing the OSU Fight Song!! You need to take him on a tour of London!! I've never been there and I recognized them! A little known (over there, anyway) and less important fact is that the guy in red and white is called the drum major, and serves as a sort of roving time keeper, as well as putting on his own show twirling a baton.
The reason they can get into and out of formation so quickly is because they march on their toes at 180 beats per minute and it has been known to reach 200 or higher. Also, the final formation was not part of the London "half-time" presentation. It is "Script Ohio" which is Ohio State University Marching Band's signature. It is performed at every football game the band performs at either home or away. It can be pre-game, post-game and sometimes at half-time like at this show. It was the first script writing formation ever performed and has been going strong since 1932.
You commented on there movement and stanima to march and play their instruments. As we speak , the Osu band has Summer Camp where prospective members learn to march train to build up their stanimia for the tryouts for the auditions that the students go thru to try and secure 244 positions. They usually have 450 try out for the marching band.
As an American who's familiar with London, I'm sorry I'm going to have to correct the Brits here at @8:25, but that was Tower Bridge and not London Bridge in the formation. Lol.
@Yass&Fats there is a London Bridge in America at Lake Havasu in Arizona which majority of the stones of that bridge in Arizona is from the actual 1831-1967 River Thames London Bridge when London put it up for sell and was sold for US$2,460,000 back in 1968 that amount would equal $22,189,200.00 in 2024.... Hence why there is a British & American Flags hanging on the London Bridge during the visual performance.
My lip would be blown (as a brass player, that means my lips would be swollen and unable to make more sound) at the end of each halftime show I ever performed in marching band. Such a fun and rewarding experience.
Wrong - for 2 reasons. 1 - London Bridge is NOT in the US. There is a bridge in Arizona which they named 'London Bridge' because it has granite stones from London Bridge in England. But, London Bridge still exists in London. 2 - The bridge the OSU marching band depicts is Tower Bridge....which has 2 towers and is very iconic. London Bridge (in England and the US) are both flat ordinary looking bridges.

OSU band is wild. Script Ohio is a staple for a lot of the hand-egg (american football) games. I say this as someone who lives a 5 minute walk from their stadium.
Ohio State, along with many other marching bands, have a very strict and rigorous training and conditioning program. The musicians selected are the best of the best. They train as hard or even harder than the football players they cheer for.
The Ohio State marching band is excellent at what they do.... done of course in the "show band" style which most college marching bands are... Just like Ohio State does some incredibly awesome things you shouldn't miss the Aggie Band performing their "four way cross" and/or senior day performances...
This stadium is small compared to The Horseshoe and even U of Michigan stadium. I love watching the band come into the stadium and seeing the do Script Ohio. I'm a USC Trojan fan living in the Buckeye state but I like that part of it.
As a veteran of marching bands, it's all about musical ques. At this point of the song, I need to be standing on this part of the field. And Football with all those lines, make it so easy to do. Then you memorize the music and movements and voila! You have a football march band halftime routine. Parades can be harder. That's a marathon. Halftime is easy. It's only 15 minutes. Making the routines, that's hard. Doing them? Pretty easy. I find it pretty hilarious that people are amazed by this. Grant it IS amazing, but it isn't hard. For marching bands, parades like Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is insane. People drop like flies. In my younger years I did this and it would be cool to do it except: a) I'm from Michigan, and is obligated to hate everything Ohio. and... b) It's a brass band. I played the flute. Sadness.

Fun y, I thought you you have been tearing up by now. Wow🇺🇲I guess some of us Americans are just sappy when it comes to democracy and our fighting man.
First - That’s the Tower Bridge, for all you who think it’s the London Bridge. The London Bridge is in the US, and has been for quite some time. The Tower Bridge is by the Tower of London. Second - the end is the script Ohio, something the Ohio State University band has been doing since the 1930’s. They are very proud of their script Ohio, and choose seniors to dot the “I” in Ohio. I don’t know how long they can keep it going, since nobody can read script (cursive) anymore. 😆 Third - I’m guessing here, but the Tower Bridge with both flags is to show the friendship between our two, I guess I should say “people’s” since the UK is comprised of more than one country. Not to denote something we have in common.
Wrong, there is a bridge in Arizona called “London Bridge”, it’s just because it was built from bricks from a bridge in London. The actual London Bridge is still in London. It is just a flat bridge without towers. A few kilometers from Tower Bridge.
@@Silky808You are right that London Bridge is in London. The London Bridge in Arizona isn't called London Bridge just because it was built from bricks from a bridge in London though. -No, he said we share the tradition of British brass bands, now we'll share an American tradition that dates back since 1936 known around the world. Not something shared, they we're sharing it... Script OHIO is our tradition we shared with you Brits...
I-O!
I might be just a silly American but at 8:35, I do believe that is Tower Bridge and not London Bridge. Fun fact, however, the original London Bridge is now in Arizona.
Hi Yass & Fats A great half time show in Ohio and I live in Arizona and our state has the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City because it was sinking into the Thames and couldn't support the weight of modern vehicles? but why did they move it $$$ I wonder?
The music was Satisfaction and tongue was for Mick Jager (Rolling Stones). Are you sure you guys are British??😁😁😁
That is the Band of Ohio State University.
Hey guys, the announcer even said it was a script Ohio, lol. Also, I'm from California but even I know it's called the Tower Bridge, not the London Bridge, which now resides in the US!
"Best damn band in the land!"
Fun y, I thought you you have been tearing up by now. Wow🇺🇲I guess some of us Americans are just sappy when it comes to democracy and our fighting man.
I could very well be wrong but I'm sure he's pretty sure that's the Tower Bridge. If I'm not mistaken London Bridge is now located in Arizona.
There is Tower Bridge which is the one with the two towers(depicted by the band) and there is still a London Bridge in London.
The band is from THE Ohio State University
The London Bridge is in ARIZONA.
No sir. As an American, it represents OUR Quuen❤🇬🇧🇺🇸 forever!!!
Huh? No, we fought a war to get rid of the monarchy. Its a king now, anyway.
It is "God Save Your King" now.
It’s also the same tune as ‘My Country ‘tis of Thee’.
I've walked across the old London Bridge at Lake Havasu City, Arizona!
Yass is probably from one of the 18 cities or communities in the USA named London 🤔 😅
I have no idiea what this is all about but im from Ohio so watched it lmao
First - That’s the Tower Bridge, for all you who think it’s the London Bridge. The London Bridge is in the US, and has been for quite some time. The Tower Bridge is by the Tower of London.
Second - the end is the script Ohio, something the Ohio State University band has been doing since the 1930’s. They are very proud of their script Ohio, and choose seniors to dot the “I” in Ohio. I don’t know how long they can keep it going, since nobody can read script (cursive) anymore. 😆
Third - I’m guessing here, but the Tower Bridge with both flags is to show the friendship between our two, I guess I should say “people’s” since the UK is comprised of more than one country.
The London Bridge in Arizona is the London Bridge that was in London before the current London Bridge replaced it.
It is actually London Bridge, or Old London Bridge, just relocated.
Yes, Buckingham Palace
Tower Bridge!
Tower Bridge - not London Bridge, I believe.
Check out Japanese precision walking.
The OHIO State Marching Band performing Script OHIO.... What's that word, I can't make it out.... SMH.
I think the one song is now "God save the King", though I still want to say Queen.
Yes, but the same tune is used for “My Country, ‘tis of Thee”, which is a well known American patriotic song.
@@OHCelt It is a known fact that "My Country Tis Of Thee" is basically a cover of the original British song I already named.
@@Ecrocken So what? My point was that to Americans this tune is associated with a different song to God Save the King.
@@OHCelt My point is that they sang "God save the Queen" when it is now "God save the King". Then you came in with all of this "America the Beautiful" nonsense. That song had absolutely nothing to do with the song in the video.
@@Ecrocken No I did not. I said that the tune to GSTK is also used for "My Country 'tis of Thee" (which is not America the Beautiful), but is a song sung frequently in the US, and more familiar to TBDBITL as that. Please try harder next time.
It's OHIO at 11:30!
Respect and saute mate
I am not sure either one of you are from Britain. 😂 Doesn't London Bridge cross the Thames as part of the A3?
What they did was Tower Bridge.
We are brothers and sister’s
7:53 She’s right 😂
