It's even more impressive when you consider that these are young people in their teens and early 20s, they aren't professionals, and the band's membership is completely different every 4-5 years.
They practice insane amount of hours. I'm an Ohio State alum and we call them TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land) for a reason. People dream of getting in. It's an honor.
An Ohio State alum as well. My niece was in the band for 4 years. Yep, they practice just as much as the football team. Another thing most don't know, there are tryouts before the football season, AND every week afterward to select the members that will march in the next performance. If you made it, you can be challenged by someone that didn't make it last time. Everyone must continue to be at their best ! They are TBDBITL and no doubt !!
Come over to Ohio during the fall. You can go to an Ohio State football game on Saturday with 102,000 people. Its an experience. Tailgate with some barbecue and cold beverages starting early in the AM. Then 2 hours and 20 minutes before the noon kickoff you head over to St. John arena to watch the skull session. Skull Sessions are pregame pep rallies with about 14,000 people that take place at St. John Arena before home football games. The band marches over to St. John arena and bursts into the arena to the sound of the ramp cadences. After a few short cheers from each section, the band takes their seats to play “Fanfare for a New Era” as the football team arrives. A few people speak & the Crowd Goes Crazy as the band marches over to the football stadium for what is a really cool entrance. They also perform at halftime, which are usually the themed ones that you have seen. It's an absolutely amazing experience! Then you can stick around Sunday and head south 2 hours to Cincinnati or north 2 hours to Cleveland and watch an NFL game. I'll even be your personal tour guide. I go to a ton of games every year, both Ohio State and Cleveland Browns.
And if you come the last Saturday in November, you will witness them finally defeating their mortal enemies from that state up north for the first time in four years!
Once you learn the song, you know where to hit your mark automatically. I attended band camp every day for six weeks every summer, and the band director, not the drum major that you see on the field, would print out a copy of the field with dots that represented each member's starting locations on the field, give us a number count for the beat, we'd walk and rehearse our places without music, (we knew the moves before we knew the music) go inside the school's band room to learn the songs, (we'd first separate woodwinds, brass, and percussion to learn their parts) and rotate by marching for practice in the early morning and after 6pm, and play inside between those hours to avoid the extreme Alabama heat. We'd go home for dinner (ate lunch at practice) and go back to practice until 9pm to 10pm. A lot of schools leave town and go to an actual camp where they'd stay for weeks, sleeping in cabins, or other accommodations on site. If you guys noticed, they're wearing white shoes. When I was in high school marching band, we'd come across some bands during competition/battles wearing black shoes. Our school had always worn white shoes because they are a dead giveaway as to if your feet are in sync, if they're reaching up to your knees during a high-step, and aligned with the other members; just easier for judges and spectators to see any mistakes. Our instructors always said that those wearing black shoes, were trying to hide any mistakes. That may not be a fact, but I could see _some_ wearing them for that reason. I was always proud to wear white shoes, and also proud that we won many, many competitions since the late 1950s or early 1960s, and possibly before. I just remember that much of the history as told by my instructors, older alumni, and by reading news articles. I was in the band from Freshman to Senior year, which is four years and I loved being part of a championship band. Yes, drum battles are real.
Yes! You did it! Reacting to The Ohio State University Marching Band Tribute to The British Invasion! The Ohio State University has a catchy cheer! If someone yells "O-H!" then the response is "I-O"! :)
Both my high school and university bands did what was called "8 to 5" marching where you take 8 steps every 5 yards. There was a lot of time spent on perfecting everyone's strides which is a big part of why the formations work like they do.
Thanks for reviewing! I live in Ohio! And was also in a school band who did very similar designs. Our band used “continuous music and continuous motion” as a tagline. We had a squad of 4 members. All of the designs were made on graph paper showing where each squad moved in each 8 count step. We practiced hours on end. It was amazing how all the designs came together. When you on the field you really don’t see the designs- just where your squad was moving in each 8 count sequence. I always loved watching films of our shows taken from high up in the stadium. Definitely made us appreciate all the work. Ohio State Band has many shows on you-tube. Very impressive! If you like military precision bands you will enjoy Texas A&M band who also have numerous you-tube videos! If you have ?’s about Ohio I will be happy to answer! OH-IO! ❤ Cheers!
All I can say is we aren't called "The Best Damn Band in the Land" for nothing! Better believe it! Come up with the most extraordinary formations and stunts you've ever seen! Mind boggling! U haven't seen anything until you've seen all of the performances! O-H!!
Yes Kai, they hold marching band competitions across the USA. Marching bands are integral components of our sporting events and we start in Jr High and High School here! I played in our local school band and it was a blast. Our home is about a mile and a half from the High School where I attended and as soon as spring comes around and the weather starts to warm up you can hear the band outside practicing their marching and playing. It brings back such fond memories! We even would travel down to San Francisco each year and take part in the Cal State Berkeley vs Oregon State half time show with bands from all across California! We also played and marched in our local parades here in town.
it's considered a great honor to "dot" the I in the Script Ohio. normally it's s Sousaphone player who will be graduating but on occasion someone else could be asked to do it to mark a special occasion. I'm glad they ended the program with Script Ohio. it's what they are known for
I’m in Ohio state fair now hundred percent and I love the Ohio State marching band. They are the best damn band in the land for a reason I was born in Ohio and I’ll die in Ohio loving the buckeyes.
As a man who spent a lot of time in marching bands and corps the best way to deal with messing up is to pretend its intentional. Don't stutter step and try to fix it. Just step out big and fix it like you meant to do it.
Most American schools offer a music class when kids are 10 yrs old and are introduced to band marching when they enter high school around the age of 14 yrs old.
Consider checking out Drum Corps International. They take marching to a whole new level. Look for Bluecoats "Change is Everything" for 2024. They won the whole thing just a few days ago. Also, consider checking out "Spartacus" by Phantom Regiment in 2008.
Yes, but remember that DCI bands practice one routine for an entire summer. These college kids put on a new show every week, on top of going to classes. It's a totally different animal.
I’m a Buckeye Alumnus. I came very close to joining the band, but was a little slow on my cite reading audition :) I decided to join the Army instead after I left. Our band is always putting in work eh?
As an alum of OSU, we have the best marching band. Check their tribute to script Ohio, Michael Jackson (about 10 yrs ago w/ the moonwalk) and Earth, Wind, & Fire (done 8/31/24) HBCU bands has the best music tho' IMO
It’s funnier bc these are students. I was in marching band for my highschool all 4 years and I did some marching for my university. It’s a lot of work but performances, football games and competitions were always the fun bits. I bet they had a blast.

Awesome - thanks for checking out! Aren't they awesome!! Go Buckeyes - TBDBITL!!! O-H Ya, when they are marching in a parade - if you are standing on the side and watching them go by - it looks like they are on a conveyer belt!! It's amazing!! No one bobbing up and down - just smooth... they are something to see! You all need to come to Ohio in the fall - 1) It's beautiful - fall leaves changing colors - rolling hills - fishing, beautiful lakes 2) The Ohio State Buckeyes - football season!! Catch a game!! You will not be sorry!
Yes drumline battle of the bands IS a real thing. Here are a few to get you started. Drumline Battle: Florida Classic Battle of the Bands 2018 Drumline Battle - Elizabeth City vs Benedict College Drumline Battle - Shreveport Battle of the Bands 2019

Hi Alice and Ky! Thank you for a fun video reaction. I don’t know about Battle of the Bands but I will second the comment about Texas, they are unreal. Also, other OSU videos are (as you noted) Michael Jackson, Video Games, Disney/Pixar Movies and Top Gun…all great. Have a safe, happy and healthy week! Don’t forget to feed your 3 donkeys, they look hungry. 😊 Greg
It’s fairly standard to march at two beats per second with a 30-inch step. Most of the times they make a design on the field, it’s for a multiple of 16 beats, and the transitions from one design to the next are some multiple of 16 beats. But if it’s 4/4 time, so that sixteen beats is four measures, you would be told something like, at the beginning of measure 1, you would be on the 35 yard line closer to the north end zone eight steps away from the east sideline, at the beginning of measure 5, you should be one step closer to the north end zone than the 40 yard line and on the west hash mark, etc.
I really respect people who can do marching band. It is so difficult. You have to remember you can’t see the shapes they are making from inside the shape and they have to move very fast and yet very smoothly to make the shapes in a timely manner all while playing wind instruments (minus the drummers but that doesn’t really make it easier) there is a special way they learn to walk so their movements don’t interfere with their instrument playing. They also must memorize precise amounts of steps and in what direction in order to make the shapes. While also remembering the music at the same time. One person being off can upset the entire show. On top of all of that it’s not a small group of people it’s a hundred or more all perfectly timed in their movements and playing. It’s very awe inspiring. Yes there are marching band competitions. They are wonderful to watch. I almost forgot to mention that they keep thier uniforms and instruments in beautiful perfect condition. Like they are going on a military inspection. This is important for competition but also just shows discipline and pride.

I just subscribed As an older fan, I remember "The British Invasion", with great enthusiasm. Definitely one of our greatest music periods to be alive! Best music from the entire UK. And the UK musicians loved the roots of music and jazz and rock and they were so respectful along with American bands. As kids and still today, we always loved England. For years since, many stereotypes spoken with disgust from some English is always shocking and plentiful over my 60+ years. Look at USA's historically black colleges/universities marching bands like Jackson State, etc. Here's a link to the battles between HBCU bands in 2023. ruclips.net/video/FdW8AaqouUI/видео.html A good HBCU band movie that was fun is called "DRUMLINE FROM LIKE 20 YRS AGO with Nick Cannon. Also OSU band is based the traditional British military brass band brass and percussion instruments only.
Hey AliKai! First off, GO BUCKS!!! O-H!!! Secondly, no, "Drumline wasn't high school, it was college, but it wasn't a "traditionally white school" it was about a HBCU (Historically Black College/University). Back during segregation times black people weren't allowed to attend traditional white schools, mainly in the Southern parts of the country, so they created their own and they are still live and well and thriving. Even though now, all are allowed as even back then, the bands are still alive and well and are usually the main attraction, even more than the actual games. People go to see them. Folks into college sports here in the USA don't understand the competitive nature of being in the marching band at that level. It's more competitive than sports, the hazing can be worse than the greek life, and the work involved is unceasing.. 👽🗿👽🗿👽
I wanna say none...our breaks are not that long and definitely not long enough to perform anything significant. The sport/game itself is the show. Plus, college/uni sports is not as big as it is over there unfortunately...
This is a show that would normally be performed at half time, but the NFL had them perform before the game. The Brits did not know to be in their seats 20 minutes before kick off to catch it.
It's even more impressive when you consider that these are young people in their teens and early 20s, they aren't professionals, and the band's membership is completely different every 4-5 years.

Yes, a smaller stadium can be intimate, compared to the Big House.
@@margf.6773 Every stadium is intimate compared to the Big House, since it's so shallow it captures barely any sound.

To me, the marching band was the icing on the cake during a game. And during our Super Bowl, I’d rather watch a matching band than any pop singer.

Wow, that’s competitive! But I guess it’s the only way to ensure the band has the best performing musicians and that no-one gets complacent.
My roommates were band members, very competitive, lot of back stabbing for a spot, and no matter how well you could play an instrument, if you couldn't march/step you were out!
Knock your socks off watching a different band, since you're curious. You won't find another band this good!
The guy in the red uniform is called the Drum Major.
Awesome - thanks for checking out! Aren't they awesome!! Go Buckeyes - TBDBITL!!! O-H

You were looking for Battle of the bands, well, here are a few.... (Also each section may have battles. Each section also has it's own nicknames as well...)

i very much enjoyed that
Folks into college sports here in the USA don't understand the competitive nature of being in the marching band at that level. It's more competitive than sports, the hazing can be worse than the greek life, and the work involved is unceasing.. 👽🗿👽🗿👽
best dam band in the land
@2:44 ok great band
The Beatles, maybe you can drive my car
the rolling stones ok @4:50
Try watching Drum Crops....DCI is the best
Show the band full screen!
what kind of half-time entertainment do you guys have in the UK at your college sports games?
I wanna say none...our breaks are not that long and definitely not long enough to perform anything significant. The sport/game itself is the show. Plus, college/uni sports is not as big as it is over there unfortunately...
Pump Up
Well, you won’t be the first…..
But You can find a better version of “Pump Up” than the others that have reacted recently.

There are hundreds of college bands. Not just Ohio State.
All I see is a lot of empty seats.
It's in London . . . not the US....lol.
this was pre game . there was a large crowd during the game .
This is a show that would normally be performed at half time, but the NFL had them perform before the game. The Brits did not know to be in their seats 20 minutes before kick off to catch it.
