My daughters 2005 Durango’s oil light flickers when it comes to a stop. It also makes an annoying chiming noise. It goes away when she accelerates. I checked the oil and it was fine. I said I should go check and see if the pressure is low. She said, “I’ve been driving with that light for 6 months. This truck is a beast. Runs great. I’m gonna start with the sensor. Gotta love kids. Thanks for the video.
Oh my God Robert I fill ya, six months! Yikes!! From my experience there’s not a whole lot you can do running thicker oil makes the time in chain tensioner not pump up correctly . Running thinner oil very seldomly helps but is what I would try if you still have a problem more than likely it’s just a sensor though. Hopefully it helps out and I wish you the best have a great day
Awesome. Well explained and simple..My oil pressure just dropped to nothing today unless adding RPM. No knocks oil oil spewing out. Sensor !! Thank you
Thanks a million man. My 04 Hemi Rams pressure started dropping to zero and would only rise if I stepped on throttle. I changed my sensor and bingo! Folks, you will need a oil pressure sensor socket from Advance. I'm saving you time and trips.
I hope this is my problem also. Got in the truck today, noticed the pressure was about 20% lower than usual. 10 minutes later I parked and it went straight to zero. My heart sunk. Going to get the part tomorrow.
Very helpful video. Thank you for sharing. Just when you think the video could not get any better you said God bless you at the end. To me that was the best part. God bless you sir I hope you have an amazing day.
I need to install a glowshift oil temperature gauge and the manual says to screw the sensor to the oil galley port. Where is it please on a DODGE CHARGER RT 5.7 2007 ? Thank you very much and keep up the good job. Cheers.
Good instruction. I have OBD codes 1521 and 520 for "engine oil pressure sensor/switch malfunction" and engine will not start. Oil is full with no leaks and engine will not turn over. I've been told that a failed sensor will cause the computer to disable the engine start function. Turn the key to accessories and the dash lights up, but turning the key to the start position does absolutely nothing except I hear the fuel pump energize. Also, no need to drain oil to change the sensor???
Right beside the oil pressure sensor. He actually mentioned it in the beginning of the video. You probably have found it by now but just incase, there you go
will the check engine light go off after I replace this? Or do I have to do something else to get rid of the light? I know that this is causing the check engine light to come on.
Unplugging that sensor deactivates MDS correct? I have a 06 with MDS I want it off...I heard unplugging the oil temperature sensor does infact deactivate the MDS .can you confirm please? Thank you
That makes a lot of sense, So other than not knowing what your oil pressure is. It couldn’t technically hurt anything because , The oil pressure sensor doesn’t control anything , except for that. , The other issue would be that it would put the ECM in limp mode because I’m assuming it would turn on the check engine light. Meaning that the engine wouldn’t regulate O2 sensors etc. etc. which could possibly cause decreased fuel mileage. But hurting something I don’t think it’s gonna hurt anything even over the long run. So it’s worth a try But if you wanna send me your Ecm I can delete it for you. So you would still be able to have your oil pressure light and your oil pressure gauge ,more power and save your fuel economy , Plus the ECM will still monitor and regulate your fuel air mixture ratio the cost is only 400 bucks. And it’s worth every penny of it. But still you can give it a try and see if it works. With Dodge it usually takes a couple of extra days over what it normally takes for other ones just so you know generally most ECM‘s can be flashed and reprogrammed for right around $250 but that particular one is a little bit more expensive because it requires extra parts and stuff if it’s something you’re interested in and we’re happy to do it and I’ll explain it in more detail
Great video man! Today i went to start my truck and and oil pressure gauge is on zero, is it the oil pressure sensor i need to change? The last couple days it has been dropping down and today when i started it, it didnt move at all.
Well I’m sorry to hear that Dalton but it’s probably actually losing oil pressure because these engines are notorious for that it’s generally not the oil pump it’s generally because the engine it’s not pushing pressure the way it supposed to because the ports that the oil pressure pushes through expand dropping the oil pressure. I’m very sorry to hear that that’s happening to you and I wish I had better news that’s very common with these let me know if you have any more questions I’ll be happy to try to help you
When you remove the old sensor, does it spill a lot of oil? Or it's not that messy at all? And also can you remove and install with a adjustable wrench or do I need the soket ?
Thanks for the video Clay. Would the switch perhaps send wrong pressure to gauge? On my 03 5.7 Hemi the pressure on gauge drops to zero on idle. As soon as I accelerate it goes back to normal. When I changed oil last time this switch had oil inside by terminals from leak somewhere. Is there a way to manually confirm the oil pressure? Thanks.
Hey JZ I appreciate the kind words. There is a way to hook up a manual pressure gauge it’s actually pretty simple and available at most part stores. But unfortunately having quite a bit of experience with these vehicles. You probably do have an oil pressure problem. Oil travels past bearings around the cam, etc. causing it to not have as much oil pressure is it should add an idol. There’s only One other possibility and that’s that your pick up tube is clogging up. Because it has a mechanical oil pump. They don’t generally go bad. I wish I had some news to better report
The Clay Way Thanks for the fast reply! I was going to drop the oil pan tomorrow hoping there is something blocking the pickup tube. The weird thing is after I cleaned connection and added the fresh oil the pressure gauge was fine for a few days. Hope its not the bearings, I think you have to pull engine to do that on HEMI 🤦♂️
The Clay Way Clay wanted to give an update just in case somebody else watches your video. Fixed the issue. It was the Oil Pressure Sending switch. When I went to hook up manual oil pressure gauge I noticed it was leaking and plug inside was full of oil. Truck had 40 PSI pressure at idle and about 75 PSI at 3K RPM. Needle was very stable. Thanks again for videos. Now on to the suspension!
Could you help me out, I snipped the wires during a build and can’t recall what the colors are. I have one solid purple and nothing else. Is it a one wire setup. Thanks, and good video!
Hey, I have the 2007 dodge hemi with 200k . Are those oil sending units known to leak a little bit of oil while NOT causing any other issues ? Mine is pretty wet around it and the rubber boot on the steering unit below it has some oil dripping from above.
Well it’s difficult for me to say I would recommend getting it checked right away. Because if it is actually low on oil pressure it is going to create a very big problem and could be much worse if you continue to drive it around. If I told you to drive it around and then it blew up the next day you wouldn’t think very much about me. I can only say that if it were my vehicle and it sounded fine personally I would give it a try because I could probably fix it if something catastrophic happened. I know I sound like a politician when I say that. (not really giving an answer to cover my ass lol) Better to be safe than sorry my friend. Air on the side of caution get someone to check it out for you ASAP
Question my trucks check engine gauge came on and then the oil pressure dropped and the truck shut off and would no start. Could that be because of a bad oil pressure sensor?
⚠️😧 that may not be good… check and make sure your starter is good though and you do not have a solid red LED light on the dash. When you turn the key on if you have the solid red LED light it’s a security problem. I know you can unplug the oil pressure sensor and the vehicle will still start.
I have an ‘06 Ram 1500 4wd and my check engine light stays on with a P0520 code knowing it’s the oil sensor and the oil gauge stays above normal when driving and I’m about to get that sensor replaced.
It most certainly does generally you’re going to find that most oil pressure sensors on just about any vehicle are very close to the oil filter it’s kind of a rule of thumb…… except for some jack ass that told me there was an oil pressure sensor on the top of the intake of his dodge and I won hundred percent know for certain unless he was working on a 5.7 he was 100% wrong because I know them Engines like the back of my hand or should I say the palm……
My husband passed in November and he made me promise to change the oil in his truck every three months. Kansas is cold right now. Took it to Walmart. Do not judge me. Pressure is reading higher then I have seed it before. Normal is in the middle, about 40. Now ready higher? about 3/4 on gauge. Walmart said 12 quarts? I thought that was kind of high? Please tell me what to do. I really don't want my husband walkingy my dreams.
12 yikes!!!!! You might better go somewhere and get a second opinion because that does not make any sense unless it is a diesel it have a high oriole pressure is really not a problem but being overfill that much is a real problem. The 5.7 hemi if I remember correctly is about an 8 quart engine that’s a lot of oil for one engine and a little bit higher than most but 12 quarts is very excessive I wish you the best dear. Go somewhere and have that checked right away
I replaced my oil sensor a month or so ago. The Guage on my dash board shows the oil level at around 3/4 full and does not move from that position. At a recent inspection they gave me an oil sensor switch error.. could i have tightened it too much or could the sensor already have failed and need replacing? Thanks for any help or advice you can give.
Well then sensors have pressure plates inside them just as a way to explain it and it is possible that they could’ve failed already generally if they’re going to fail it will happen quickly like in your case so I would recommend replacing it I’m certain you didn’t do anything wrong
This part that you replaced would it by any chance be driving my low and high needle all the way to the right does it control what the needle says. On the top right of the cluster gauge
It does control the needle try unplugging it and see what your needle does they are generally in that situation it might mean that your instrument cluster is malfunctioning and I have a friend over here in Grand Rapids the rebuilds instrument cluster his name is Dash doctor (josh) So you can Google him if you find out that’s what you need if you unplug it and it it still does it then you need a new dash cluster if you unplug it and it does not do it then you need the oil pressure sensor like in the video
@@sharpcarco that's a good idea thank you for the tip I wasn't sure if you were going to see this comment because the video is a few years old thank you I appreciate your help. By the way the check engine light is on and it's pulling up that code.
Hello, great video and definitely audio that's very clear. Question for you or anyone who Can help; can you tell me where the oil pressure sensor is located on 2015 Ram 1500, V6 ECO? I looked everywhere for it still can't find it. Thank you
I appreciate the kind words “unfortunately I’m not familiar with the V6 eco-yet so unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to help but maybe somebody else will God bless and have a great day
Opposite side by the fuel filter but pretty much the same way I mean oil filter sorry I answered this on the Quick and my wife got mad at me for answering questions all the time so I didn’t check what I said
Yeah it’s extremely similar except the sensor is located on the opposite side of the engine and I believe I have video showing you how to do that exact one even though it’s really unnecessary to look at it it’s right near the oil filter in the front of the engine if I remember right it’s right above it you can look on my jeep playlist for 4.7 oil pressure sensor replacement and I’m sure you’ll be able to find it there if you need more direction I’m pretty sure that the same sensor and the same size socket
You’re very welcome thank you very much for commenting I greatly appreciate you doing that and I love doing videos for folks just like you did appreciate it
If it lost oil pressure because the oil pump went bad there are very big problems going on in the engine. If this sensor is bad it will not stop the vehicle from starting, If your vehicle is not starting but turning over look at the RPM gauge when the engine is rolling over if the RPM gauge is not moving you more than likely have a bad crank sensor. I hope you don’t have big-time internal problems if it’s not cranking😕
Hey man I like your video. Question: I have a 2005 Ram 1500 with a 4.7. Is the oil pressure sensor in the same location? Also, do you know if a faulty sensor can cause the computer system to shut the engine down if it detects the pressure is low for a long period of time? Thanks if you can help.
Thank you for the kind words Dave, Oil pressure sensor on the 4.7 is located on the driver side front of the engine near the Oil filter. I know more about 4.7’s then I do the 5.7‘s. As far as I know if it detects low oil pressure for a long time it will not shut the engine off. I can tell you this much something is going wrong if you have low oil pressure on them they do not generally have bad oil pumps but there are some kind a bearing or something going out . I hope that information is helpful have a great day thank you for the kind words
Hello clay . I have 2005 dodge ram 1500 5.7 hemi . I changed the oil sensor but my truck won't start though it shows the code for the sensor. What can it be now ?
Crank sensor.... can’t say for certain of course but the oil pressure sensor will not generally make the vehicle not start. The crank sensor is for the Time in and it is crucial to the vehicle starting This is assuming the engine turns over Hope that’s helpful
When you crank it over make sure you have a jump box on it or a battery charger then while you’re cranking it watch the RPM gauge if the RPM gauge does not go up while it’s cranking you more than likely need a crank sensor very common
Hey I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 5.7 hemi the check gauges light is on when it’s cold and the oil pressure gauge reads zero but if you turn it off and turn it back on the light goes away and the oil pressure is normal any idea of what causes that issue ?
Well if the engine is not knocking. More than likely you have a bad ground somewhere. But if I were you I would take the sensor out and put an actual gauge on it to make sure it has oil pressure because that is a very expensive engine. Then I would go from there looking for loose grounds or bad grounds if I had the proper oil pressure. It would not be unusual for that engine to not have proper oil pressure at start up
I have had them in the past were that lightning bolt came on and they were charging then a couple of weeks later the alternator went out but that’s not always been the case I’m sorry I wish I could give you a hand in the situation
Well I’m very sorry to say Sammy that more than likely you have a plugged pick up tube. Or a bad oil pump.. But from the experience I’ve had over the years it’s probably from worn out bearings that won’t allow the oil pressure to pump up at an idol
Oil heat sensor? Never heard of one of them……. Unless they’re talking about a heater did they use to heat the oil when you live in sub 20° weather over 50% of the year. Yeah that’s ridiculous changing Oil pressure sensor takes Half an hour at most And an oil change is an oil change… Full synthetic would probably cost $75 I guess I should mention the sensor is probably $30-$50 You don’t have some kind of diesel do you? If you do I have no clue if that’s high or not . A Mercedes sprinter Diesel oil change cost $200 and they’re very expensive but I don’t think it’s the same thing for the Dodge diesel
@@sharpcarco I live in south Louisiana where it doesn’t get below 40*. It’s a ram 1500 5.7. He’s supposed to do the work tomorrow. Looks like I’ll give him a call tomorrow morning bright and early.

Thank you, my buddy suggested the same thing. Guess I will do it again lol
I have the same exact problem happen yesterday..going to put the second d oil sending unit now..second one in 2 days
my plug on my 1500 has 2 prongs yet all the sensor s i look to replace shows 3 prongs. is that ok to use
I miss GR. Great town
Since this is somewhat electrical do you need to disconnect the battery before changing the sensor?
No
This part that you replaced would it by any chance be driving my low and high needle all the way to the right does it control what the needle says.
Thank you
I appreciate the kind words “unfortunately I’m not familiar with the V6 eco-yet so unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to help but maybe somebody else will God bless and have a great day
Is the same location for a 2007 4.7 magnum
Opposite side by the fuel filter but pretty much the same way
I mean oil filter sorry I answered this on the Quick and my wife got mad at me for answering questions all the time so I didn’t check what I said
Do I have to drain the oil to do this
Do you need to drain the oil?
No
will this be similar to the 4.7l ? mine is going out and im replacing it while I change my oil this Friday?
Yeah it’s extremely similar except the sensor is located on the opposite side of the engine and I believe I have video showing you how to do that exact one even though it’s really unnecessary to look at it it’s right near the oil filter in the front of the engine if I remember right it’s right above it you can look on my jeep playlist for 4.7 oil pressure sensor replacement and I’m sure you’ll be able to find it there if you need more direction I’m pretty sure that the same sensor and the same size socket
@@sharpcarco thank you very much sir you’re a huge help! I’ll be sure to recommend all my friends to your channel for help and guides!
Would the sensor be in same place on and 04 with 5.7 as well
Yes I do believe it would The sensor is most always going to be located near the filter. Just in case I’m wrong
Gracias por tu video
Thank you clay
You’re very welcome thank you very much for commenting I greatly appreciate you doing that and I love doing videos for folks just like you did appreciate it
Thank you 🙏
Thank you
Does Oil need drained prior to removing sensor
Nope A little may come out but not a ton
Would this cause the truck to shutoff and not crank?
If it lost oil pressure because the oil pump went bad there are very big problems going on in the engine.
If this sensor is bad it will not stop the vehicle from starting,
If your vehicle is not starting but turning over look at the RPM gauge when the engine is rolling over if the RPM gauge is not moving you more than likely have a bad crank sensor.
I hope you don’t have big-time internal problems if it’s not cranking😕
Thanks so much!
How much do you tighten the sensor?
It’s a pipe Thread so you just snuggled up put a little Teflon tape on there if it didn’t come with it already and it will be fine
The crank sensor is for the Time in and it is crucial to the vehicle starting
This is assuming the engine turns over Hope that’s helpful
It dose crack over but will not completely start
Thank you for ur quick response
Oh I forgot to tell u that the oil gauge is marking zero
It would not be unusual for that engine to not have proper oil pressure at start up
@Al McGee I have the same problem too and wondering how you made out with the new oil pressure sensor? Did it solve the problem?
Do I need to empty the oil before I change the part???
No , I would have told you before I did it
@@sharpcarco
Thanks 👍
Happened so many times in my 5.7. read Low oil pressure and check gauges light was on.
thank you so much!
Where I buy that socket for the sensor please
I changed mine and it still throws the code with a red lightning bolt any clue why?
The red lighting bolt is for the alternator .
I checked the alternator its still good. Man this sucks my only vehicle
I have had them in the past were that lightning bolt came on and they were charging then a couple of weeks later the alternator went out but that’s not always been the case I’m sorry I wish I could give you a hand in the situation
Thank you I appreciate it
What do you charge to do that?
To change that sensor might be like 50 bucks it only takes about five minutes to change.
Mostly helpful. I do feel like the view up would have been clearer than the view down. Still good thanks!
Is this the same for a 2004 ???
Yes
What about a oil senser on a 2009 Dodge ram hemi
It absolutely is the same as far as I know
I followed this to the t, but now when I slow down and stop it continues to do it.
Well I’m very sorry to say Sammy that more than likely you have a plugged pick up tube. Or a bad oil pump..
But from the experience I’ve had over the years it’s probably from worn out bearings that won’t allow the oil pressure to pump up at an idol
The 1 1/16 doesn’t fit!!! Stores only sale that size
Torque specs?
Google
What is his Facebook?
So this a $470 job that someone quoted me today?
Lol
Never in 1 million years
@@sharpcarco It’s the oil pressure sensor, oil heat sensor and an oil change. Still high right?
Oil heat sensor? Never heard of one of them……. Unless they’re talking about a heater did they use to heat the oil when you live in sub 20° weather over 50% of the year.
Yeah that’s ridiculous changing Oil pressure sensor takes
Half an hour at most
And an oil change is an oil change… Full synthetic would probably cost $75 I guess
I should mention the sensor is probably $30-$50
You don’t have some kind of diesel do you? If you do I have no clue if that’s high or not . A Mercedes sprinter Diesel oil change cost $200 and they’re very expensive but I don’t think it’s the same thing for the Dodge diesel
@@sharpcarco I live in south Louisiana where it doesn’t get below 40*. It’s a ram 1500 5.7. He’s supposed to do the work tomorrow. Looks like I’ll give him a call tomorrow morning bright and early.
No sound
I don’t know mine sounds just fine. You might’ve had bad Internet. Your volume turned down if you’re using an iPhone, you could possibly have your silent mode on your headphones aren’t working, but it’s definitely not the video.
Thanks for torque spec 😡
It’s a pipe fit , knuckle dragger douche bags don’t even like things for free nowadays boy..
Horrible
Yes it was very helpful thank you
Thanks Clay
