I grew up listening to The Beach Boys. My mom was a huge fan and I became an even bigger one than she. I was only 10 when I watched the news with her that night when they announced that Dennis was dead. I cried, desperately asking my mom how could they ever be The Beach Boys without him. To this day, his story pains me, as do some of the songs on Pacific Ocean Blue. You can hear the pain he felt, that he poured out into his music and it breaks your heart. The world lost something amazing that day, but he will forever be a Beach Boy. Sail On Sailor... ❤️
I absolutely DO have someone in my life like this. It is a horrible and sometimes terrifying thing to watch someone you love deliberately self-destruct and you are powerless to stop it. Thank you for opening people's eyes.
I agree. I have a friend age 58 who is a functioning alcoholic and admits he can't control his drinking. He is doing nothing about it. He will crash on the sofa and watch TV, not wanting anyone to bother him. He looks over 70 and can't remember a lot of things. How he does it I don't know.
I don't know anyone who has a heart and soul who doesn't love and admire Dennis Wilson. I can only hope that he is at peace now. We don't always know why some people are taken before their time. Maybe Dennis was put here on earth for a short time on purpose. All of us are really just on "loan" anyways, this(earth) is our temporary home. Brian said he thought music was love and from God and boy was he right. Brian and his brothers have given us all a lot of love sent from God with beautiful music
You know, I try to be this hardcore punk rocker guy but, since I was six years old Dennis Wilson has been my idol, I am now 25 and no matter how many times I see this, part 6 always make me cry. Such an amazing musician. I try to live his life as closely to the way he lived as I can. RIP Dennis, I will meet you one day.
Wow. I don't even know what to say after watching this. It's so heartbreaking, at least the end of his story. But his music will always live on and he will always be here. I'm glad I'm starting to get into the Beach Boy and Dennis now but I kinda of wish I had sooner. He was an amazing talent. Pacific Ocean Blue is absolutely beautiful. And this documentary was done so well. RIP Dennis
Wow is right. I’m sorry but I did not think the Latinos listen to the Beach boys. I know it’s not a correct statement and I apologize. Just being honest. Not trying to hurt anybody. We are all connected and I have so much to learn
I saw Dennis on the Strand in Manhattan Beach the last summer of his life. He rasped, “Hey, babe,” the way he always used to. I first met him when I was nine, back in the ‘60s. The neighborhood kids ran errands for the surfers. If you bought Dennis a burger at The Buccaneer, he’d insist on paying on one for you, too. No press. Just Dennis.
I like to remember the Dennis Wilson I was introduced to at a very young age... the Middle Brother & drummer of the The Beach Boys... in the beginning he was so fresh & promising and also a force to be reckoned with, just like his talent... sadly as he grew his demons, pain and torment grew also and I think he just tried to self-medicate to numb the pain from his childhood, young adulthood that he just could not shake nor forget... so many of us know loved ones who struggle and suffer just as Dennis did, but I just wish he could have realized he had so much going for him, but then again UNLESS you've walked in someone's shoes who have gone through similar things, you cannot judge them, you cannot say "they should have shaped up, they should have done this, they should have done that..." We all have fragile hearts regardless if anybody wants to believe and accept that and when that heart finally can't take anymore... people end up taking a different path in life and sadly that path leads to death and in some cases finally the ultimate peace they've been searching for so long... Love you Dennis... so sorry for your pain, but been there & understand it and only hope you are finally at peace...
Agreed, I think he’d have loved that colorful phrase and the work he did. I think he did a fantastic job and, though he wasn’t trying to sound like Dennis, he nailed it.
On this, the anniversary of Dennis' passing, thank you for posting the entire show. A rare look into that troubled childhood and an unflinching honesty of what substance abuse can do. I hope in passing that Dennis found his peace - AND his piece of the Pacific Ocean Blue
Every Wilson brother seems to have suffered from their childhood and to have dealt with it in a different way. It's a sad story. But a lot of good music...
You say you were there for him but you were not!! Why did you not seek help for him? His brothers should be accountable. You let your brother die!! God will hold you accountable!
I met DENNIS WILSON of the Beach Boys in 1979 when I was a doorman at the Troubadour night club in West Hollywood , California - He said "I USED TO WEAR MY HAIR LIKE THAT " Which at the time was my 1950s pompadour hairdo ala Elvis - He had such a raspy coarse voice BUT was nice and friendly ,I can say that I spent one magic moment with a great guy - "Hollywood" Joe Nania
I'm telling you the beach boys entire story from the mid 60s to the 90s could be a 5 season long HPO soap opera like the sopranos and they would still have to leave out gold material
This bio was one of the saddest I have watched in a long time. Dennis was so talented and gifted but feel he did not realize it. I know his friends tried to help him quit drinking. Thanks for posting this video but it made me cry to realize that someone so talented is gone. A huge loss for the music world. Great video for sure.
Listening to them talk about how they found Dennis is just heartbreaking, giving me chills,as tears flow! I can only think of how he passed in a POETIC Way! So Tragic! THE ONE AND ONLY REAL BEACH BOY...RIP DENNIS
I LOVE Dennis Wilson, Pacific Ocean Blue is a genius album. One of the best Wilson solo albums, save maybe for Brian Wilson's (2004) SMiLE LP. They were all great dudes through and through. Between the struggles and the triumphs, the peaks of their success and the valleys of their personal battles with mental illness, drugs, women, throughout it all they made brilliant music for generations upon generations of music lovers to share and cherish, basking in the sunshine of the aural paradise that their blood harmonies were always able to embody. I was lucky enough to see (with my father) Brian Wilson and Al Jardine (and Band) perform the magnum opus 1966 album 'Pet Sounds' in all its almighty entirety, as well as other songs sandwiched between that eternally divine collection of tunes sent from on high. Carl Wilson was a brilliant soul, and was the glue that kept the band together, the backbone, forever captured in sound with his glorious lead vocals on 'God Only Knows'. We are so lucky to have their art and their music that they made for all of humanity, and they are American Treasures in the purest sense.
Dennis was always my fave Beach Boy and after watching this video, it leaves me so saddened I saw Brian Wilson and Al Jardine in concert last Friday nite and I so wished Dennis and Carl could have been there.. Gone too soon! Substance abuse has taken away many of our musical icon's TY for uploading this video RIP
It really was sad, to see someone who could have been so happy, and WAS so talented, waste away. It does make you wanna cry, seeing his life and his moral just... deteriorate. Shows you a side of The Beach Boys you have probably never seen.
I believe Dennis was filled with a lot of sadness for some reason..eventually, it consumed him to the point of no return. Perhaps a not so good childhood under the strains of his father.
Physical and emotional abuse at a young age can manifest itself as substance abuse as a teen and/or adult! Over 90% of people with addictions (alcohol or drugs specifically) aren't masking a physical pain, they're self-medicating to fix emotional pains, I am a recovering opioid addict, trust me I know exactly how Dennis, Carl, and Brian all got to where they got to! Its heartbreaking!!
Poor Dennis. I don't think he was quite the same again after that whole Manson Family experience.

He was paranoid apparently, convinced that Charlie could 'get him' regardless of being in jail. Considering the fact Manson still has sycophants it's not totally unbelievable.
He was in Hawaii and begged me to rent one of my three wheelers. I didn’t recognize him and his handler told me he was Dennis Wilson. He looked like Charles Manson! I reluctantly let him take out one of the three wheelers. He smashed it on the reef destroying it. I went up to the Hyatt Kulima bunglo to get him to pay me for my ride. Surprised to see Christy Macvie in tears. I hated to do it but I demanded my money for the three wheeler he destroyed. Few months later he drowned. Sad situation all the way around.
Sure glad this bio doc was put together. It's the people lost with socially unpleasant problems that we never hear much about. Yet they often have the most valuable lessons, as well as interesting lives.
I only met Dennis one time and it was after a show in Rhode Island or Carl's sitting in the backseat with me and Dennis was in the passenger seat up front. 1978. Brian and Mike were in a police car. Carl and Dennis were in another limo Alan and I think a very young met where in the backseat of their own limo. My then girlfriend was secretary for Don Kirschner and manage to get us backstage. All the guys were cordial including the great Ed Carter, but Dennis, aside from being interested in my girlfriend LOL, wanted to talk. Other than telling them how much I enjoyed the show of course, we talked about things like dogs. Dennis was very accessible and real. In 1971, a company in Miami Florida released to 45 of mine which was the worlds worst cover version of the great song by Dennis from the sunflower album, "slip on through". I think he was just being kind, but Dennis said he heard it and liked it. Carl was quiet but I will never forget the experience
I feel bad for him. You can see how all the Wilson brothers were affected in a different way. It's always that way in abusive families and self destruction is often very telling. How sad.
Thank you for posting this documentary. Will watch again from time to time, and remember the Wilson family legacy. Blessed and cursed at the same time which is why their music remains so bittersweet and hauntingly beautiful.
He always reminded me of my ex, he died at 38 years of age, drug overdose, he also had seizures, he just could not stop, his energy was a lot like Dennis, both physically beautiful and self indulged, too much given to him and a wealthy family of enablers, you just ask yourself, what if.....it never goes away....
If I would have known Dennis Wilson, And he was a friend of mine, I would have done everything in my power to get the help that he desperately needed, I love you Dennis...
Sadly, it wouldn’t have done any good. It’s got to come from within. And if he doesn’t let the help inside of him, no amount of external influence will make any difference.
you know it s true until you try and help yourself out of a mess others can t do the work for you...only you can save yourself...that being said...when and if you do finally claw your way out of the darkness it sure is nice to know you still have someone to share the beauty of life with......try and be a bit softer and human..it is ok.....don t give up on your fellow man...let him know you will still be there....
Thank you so much for sharing this. Such a sad story, but he sure wasn't afraid to live. I came to this after a few other docs on the B. Boys/ "Pet Sounds".God Bless the Wilson Brothers.
Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Gram Parsons, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Phil Ochs, William Holden, Heath Ledger, Montgomery Clift. A dozen right there.
My favorite Beach Boy. The one who was not afraid of the ocean ; the one who surfed . The one who picked up the Manson , girls on Pacific COAST HIGHWAY, the one who did not bore everyone claiming genius status .
In 1980 I started a Beach Boys band at Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland in California. We're still playing today. Our guitarist's uncle pulled Dennis out of the water and called us at our rehearsal studio. I had no knowledge of these chords he wrote or the completion of, "Holy Man". I'm moving to Orlando, working for Disney World Entertainment, and continuing with a new Beach Boys band. "Holy Man" just made the set list.
Steven King There is a type of alcoholic/addict that is referred to as hopeless. I am one of them. I had a similar experience to Dennis. Years of slow, depressing deterioration. Took many hospital visits, rehabs, suicide attempts, sanitariums etc. to finally find a solution. For most though, they aren't able to find it. You can't imagine how many people i've seen die of this thing. Dennis was one of them. Shine on you diamond Dennis Wilson.
Humbert Humbert Unfortunately so true and even worse in the 2nd decade of the millennium. Hardcore drugs are being used by younger and younger children, death after death daily. Let this be a reminder to those with younger children or grandchildren, mind your meds and mind those children which it takes a village to raise.
You are absolutely right. My last girl friend was a massive alcoholic .I thought I could help.I thought I would be the one who got it right.Let me tell you this, alcoholism and the person suffering from it,if you have never had experience with it,is overwhelming and all consuming. They are the most manipulating people you will ever know. They will agree with what you tell them and go do it anyway.Dennis, was out of control and needed professional help and that probably would not have worked either.
Holy man, was not recorded in 76. It was recorded in October 74 at brother studio. I remember being there at that time. It was not titled "holy man" by Dennis. It was called "moog riff." There you go. www.kevinmichaels.us
Dennis was almost too far gone for detox help at this point. He reportedly would have seizures triggered by periods of withdrawal so he had become so dependent on alcohol that it would threaten his health NOT to be drinking. Sad sad case.
WOW... Just got done watching the whole biography on Denis Wilson, just so sad it is a shame what drugs and alcohol can do to a body(anyone). I think the awesomeness of the ocean maybe got him started on looking for GOD?? Holy Man, the song they put together, sounds like he was singing to or about God... Rest In Peace Denis Wilson.
RIP Dennis, your ending was very sad. But I look on your talent and your genius ways with the piano and vocal in a wow factor! Genius, like Brian! You've inspired me. 2013.- Rich The Ladykillers.
Does that make his talent any less amazing? His songs less valuable? His death less tragic? No. It really doesn't. For me, it actually makes it more sad, to see someone who could've had such an amazing life and future ahead just waste away in life.
I never knew this much about Dennis Wilson before. All the band members are overshadowed by Brian. It was good to see that he had talent as a singer and song writer. And I never knew that he had so much creative drive, not unlike his brother Brian. One thing that was glossed over here was the fact that Brian used studio musicians for some of the band's best work. It's well known now that the "Wrecking Crew" was instrumental in some of their best work. It has been said that Dennis wasn't interesting in studio work and was hanging out at the beach while Hal Blaine filled in. I wonder if that was the truth or maybe Brian thought that Hal Blaine was just a better drummer and wanted him doing the session work and, I also wonder how Dennis felt about it. We're all familiar with Brian's story of unhappiness and degeneration, it appears the Dennis had some of the same demons to fight. Probably, their father's upbringing of them being the main source of their problems.
What a journey, loved learning more about him, makes it cool for me cause were both Sagittarius so I totally felt like I got him, LOL, love The Beach Boys Rip Dennis, he was so hot
when i listen to pacific ocean blue and bamboo it just makes me feel incredibly sad. because you can hear the pain in his voice, lyrics and melodies and you know how the story ends. which makes it even sadder.
You guys glazed over the episode where his cousins broke into his bungalow at venice beach and beat the living shit out of him for giving brian drugs ignoring one of the first tenets of drug addiction YOU CAN'T BLAME YOUR DRUG USE ON OTHER PEOPLE. They should have been convicted and sent to prison.
Dennis was the second coming? Listen, I love the Beach Boys more than most people you will ever meet. But Dennis had a chance to shine. He is the one who let himself go out. He will not come back. He was not a holy man. I can only hope you were drinking when you wrote this comment 5 years ago.
justmadeit2 When I was a girl, Dennis surfed near my house. I was one of the kids he asked to go buy him a hamburger-and he’d insist on paying for a burger for me, too. That kind of generosity was characteristic of Dennis.
He was a gentle soul. And very caring. About the 4th time I met him, I had traveled, alone to another state. He was very concerned for my safety especially. going home. Imagine my surprise when a few days later I pick up my phone- and It's Dennis! He wanted to make sure I got home o.k. I had never given any of them my phone# or address. Still don't know how he tracked me down. But he did- that's the kind of guy he was. I still miss him
He had his chances and blew it, but don't we all. Im hoping he and Carl are in heaven waiting for us...One thing that does puzzle me is at the end why didn't Brian and Carl buy him a house to live in, maybe not a mansion in Beverly Hills but some house somewhere? Maybe Dennis didn't want help..RIP DW
Jim Morrison was the same way as Dennis or vice verse. 20/20 hindsight this all you want. It was his destiny to be a cautionary tale. It sounds like, when they found his body in the fetal position in the water, that he just let go..gave up...the burden was just too much. I dunno, but that part was a bit strange and deeply sad
i agree u can feel the disgust the band have with him in that televised interview where dennis is clearly off his chops......zero compassion. like your a moron your ruining this for us. snap out of it! don't think we as humans when close to somebody see things as dire as they actually are. the preverbial burying our heads in the sand. hoping this/whatever shit will just take care of itself :-(
THeMaskedBlogCritic I always wondered that too and some people did he did go to rehab but he checked himself out because he felt all alone and before he died he wrote a song about that I'm So Lonesome all the time which Brian recorded that year later and come to think about it he was a bit more see what's more stubborn he wasn't easy like brother Brian
Carl and family were in the midst of planning an intervention for Dennis, to take place shortly after ringing in the new year. While this was being planned, Dennis aborted his last attempt at rehab, and was on his way to the marina where he would meet his tragic demise.
Probably his friends were doing the same things. Like Terry Kath from Chicago, his friends couldn't lecture him for doing coke and booze, because they were doing it too.
@@ripp846 Brian had been doing the same thing but was in the process of being "saved" by Dr. Landy at the time Dennis died. Carl had been doing the same thing a few years earlier, and was in terrible shape during the disastrous "Heroin Tour" of Australia in 1978, but he managed to save himself with the help of a few close friends. He tried to help Dennis, but it was too late. So many people surrounding the Beach Boys were so concerned about Brian for many years, yet Dennis and Carl were going through similar struggles and and it seems as if no one cared. In fact some even thought of Dennis and Carl as being bad influences on Brian and as not having his best interests at heart. I think the real reason was that Brian was the group's cash cow, and Dennis and Carl were seen as expendable.
My take on the tragedy of Dennis Wilson is that it resulted from three things. One was having been rich and famous, creating a great deal of pressure and emotional upheaval. Another was being young at a time when the youth culture had convinced themselves that drugs and alcohol were something that could be played with, without consequences. And the third seems to be a rather wild and self-destructive personality type, one that often correlates with creativity. He looked so much older than 40.
How many senior celebrities die old from so many health problems caused by vices picked up after youth? People talk about youth culture, but forget that adult culture is what's influencing the dark parts of youth culture.
Leave it to the British to make the best documentary about a Beach Boy.
BB band is an American Legend. Why BBC made this documentary.
Yup
What’s up with that ?

I think he was just being kind, but Dennis said he heard it and liked it. Carl was quiet but I will never forget the experience
Childhood abuse ruined him! He couldn't overcome it!
So sad
Murry’s abuse had a lifelong effect.
I feel bad for him. You can see how all the Wilson brothers were affected in a different way. It's always that way in abusive families and self destruction is often very telling. How sad.
The clinical term is CPTSD- complex post-traumatic stress disorder. Childhood abuse is a big cause, there is psychological treatment now.
Thank you!
Literally feel like crying watching this.
RIP Dennis. Thanks for the music.
Bill
Pain will destroy you if someone doesnt help you heal.
I just wish all of these talented people, I could name a dozen of them right off the top of my head had taken better care of themselves.
Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Gram Parsons, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Phil Ochs, William Holden, Heath Ledger, Montgomery Clift. A dozen right there.
Thanks very much for posting this. What a sad story, but one that needed to be told.
Wow 😯 how heartbreakingly sad 😔.....
Dennis Wilson is one of a kind and he will never be replaced and very misunderstood
What a sad story and well done. He died before his mother Audrey. This must have been devastating for her. Thankfully she died 2 months before Carl.
met his wife shawn and gage before she passed. very nice people
Dennis will on for ever, such a sad loss, beautiful man god bless you
My favorite Beach Boy.
The one who was not afraid of the ocean ; the one who surfed .
The one who picked up the Manson , girls on Pacific COAST
HIGHWAY, the one who did not bore everyone claiming genius status .
Absolutely heartbreaking
Fucking heartbreaking at the end, this is a great documentary.
So sad. Why wouldn't a friend just hang out with him???????????????????
Steven King There is a type of alcoholic/addict that is referred to as hopeless. I am one of them. I had a similar experience to Dennis. Years of slow, depressing deterioration. Took many hospital visits, rehabs, suicide attempts, sanitariums etc. to finally find a solution. For most though, they aren't able to find it. You can't imagine how many people i've seen die of this thing. Dennis was one of them. Shine on you diamond Dennis Wilson.
jmgmarcus well said.
Oy Vey Also watch your drinking. I've decided to curb mine as it's a waste of money and damages your health, also being a smoker doesn't help.
Yes, he does deserve the up most respect, no argument there "Rest In Peace " Dennis, I will forever love you!
damn that last shot of him walking away is so cool
You are absolutely right. My last girl friend was a massive alcoholic .I thought I could help.I thought I would be the one who got it right.Let me tell you this, alcoholism and the person suffering from it,if you have never had experience with it,is overwhelming and all consuming. They are the most manipulating people you will ever know. They will agree with what you tell them and go do it anyway.Dennis, was out of control and needed professional help and that probably would not have worked either.
I NEVER cry. but i just watched this.
This might be the saddest thing I've ever seen regarding a human..I usually only cry like this when animals involved..😢
On the bright side, he lived more in those years doing what he loved with those he loved more than most would given ten lifetimes
Rest In Peace Taylor.
His father beat the crap out of him hundreds of times.
His chords are dreams
Holy man, was not recorded in 76. It was recorded in October 74 at brother studio. I remember being there at that time. It was not titled "holy man" by Dennis. It was called "moog riff." There you go. www.kevinmichaels.us
rest in peace Dennis Wilson you were the best drummer ever 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
AWSOME VIDEOS ! Thank you 🙏
very moving documentary, cried at the end. thanks for sharing.
beautiful & sad story.
forever dennis.
Dennis was almost too far gone for detox help at this point. He reportedly would have seizures triggered by periods of withdrawal so he had become so dependent on alcohol that it would threaten his health NOT to be drinking. Sad sad case.
Journeytgrutgepast, dennis could of been saved, with the right person,Taylor Hawkins is not dennis easy to see its not dennis.
Rest in
Peace Dennis
Does that make his talent any less amazing? His songs less valuable? His death less tragic? No. It really doesn't. For me, it actually makes it more sad, to see someone who could've had such an amazing life and future ahead just waste away in life.
So sad .....what can you say ?
He was lost and needed so much support...He will always be missed..
Great doc. Painful and sad but well done .......
Another reason to love both Dennis and Taylor. RIP
PACIFIC OCEAN BLUES WILL ALWAYS BE AT THE TOP OF EVERY LIST
What a journey, loved learning more about him, makes it cool for me cause were both Sagittarius so I totally felt like I got him, LOL, love The Beach Boys
Rip Dennis, he was so hot
when i listen to pacific ocean blue and bamboo it just makes me feel incredibly sad. because you can hear the pain in his voice, lyrics and melodies and you know how the story ends. which makes it even sadder.
We miss you Dennis!
I think Dennis Wilson is a genius as well, but them demons he got hit with were to much, RIP Dennis, I love you!
Outstanding
@doorsfan4ourever it's beautiful. and thanks for this documentary. really enjoyed it.
This was great. Well done.
i feel his pain rip brother
So sad, so much talet!
he was the second coming, but we never gave him a chance to shine. Now we can only hope he comes again, so return to us o' holy man.
Dennis was the second coming? Listen, I love the Beach Boys more than most people you will ever meet. But Dennis had a chance to shine. He is the one who let himself go out. He will not come back. He was not a holy man. I can only hope you were drinking when you wrote this comment 5 years ago.
It would have been good to have met him. He seemed like a cool guy, but troubled too.
justmadeit2 When I was a girl, Dennis surfed near my house.
What a sad story! Dennis was looking for what we all look for, the truth!
IM A BEACH BOY FOR LIFE. DENNIS BRIAN AL DAVID BRUCE AND YES EVEN MIKE. THE SHOW ME THE SIDE OF LIFE I CAN LOVE.
Why wasn't there an intervention of some sort? Everyone is talking about loving him and watching him decline, why didn't anyone step in and help him?
i agree
u can feel the disgust the band have with him in that televised interview where dennis is clearly off his chops......zero compassion. like your a moron your ruining this for us. snap out of it!
don't think we as humans when close to somebody see things as dire as they actually are. the preverbial burying our heads in the sand. hoping this/whatever shit will just take care of itself :-(
THeMaskedBlogCritic I always wondered that too and some people did he did go to rehab but he checked himself out because he felt all alone and before he died he wrote a song about that I'm So Lonesome all the time which Brian recorded that year later and come to think about it he was a bit more see what's more stubborn he wasn't easy like brother Brian
So, so sad. You were really one of a kind Dennis Wilson.
NotYourBusiness 5
How many senior celebrities die old from so many health problems caused by vices picked up after youth?
People talk about youth culture, but forget that adult culture is what's influencing the dark parts of youth culture.
Goodbye, Dennis :'-((((((((
Being a caring friend could help. people feel lonely and friends never notice cuz they hide it
