There were a bunch of movements that were never made into finished music boxes because the relationship between Sankyo and Square Enix ended for some reason so only 100 were released. But those of us who love just the movement, it's good enough! Alas, all the movements are gone now but I was one of the lucky ones to get in on one. Very happy to have it. Even these are now very very rare.
I think it's fair to say that Square / Enix is a bunch of idiots who ruin everything for everyone with their shitty behavior and this "legal situation" is a prime example of it. I bet the true reason behind that split was absolutely idiotic. I just wish some Chinese factory would massproduce these again somehow… just making them available as they should be.

Not sure if you got the answer, but you can see it at around 0:40, when it does the « knock » sound, the cylinder slides sideways. If you look closely at the key, they’re « pointy », which allows for unused notes to pass in the gap without triggering the sounds. If I’m not mistaking, this specific music box has 3 mini score that it plays one after the other.
With the FF7 Remake out now, and all the small music boxes they're releasing. I sure hope they'll make a second run of these. It's the only way I'll ever get to have one.

You heard incorrectly. The original collectible had the golden plaque inside the lid, and came with a serial number etched in the bottom right. You can see it in Kefka's video of the original Aeris music box (ruclips.net/video/cgcdEk3LWzM/видео.html) You can see other numbered originals on youtube as well.
No, this box is one of the limited edition. They produced 100 music box but the company went bankrupt before selling all the 100 box of the first series. They were planning to produce 1000 in total. Digicube was the company who made this order and went bankrupt. They were specialized in squaresoft product. It was at the time when square and enix are fusionning. The remaining box were bought by someone but he can not sell it with the gold plate. So he replaced them with the original sankyo sheet and sold the box on auctions. It is the same mechanism but some of them had the tempo changed.
They’ve just re-released it on Square Enix Japan, if you still want one. That said, if you want a custom one, you can look for custom Orpheus music box (if you really want that quality and can pay that kind of money, they do offer that service) Custom one from them are really expensive, though…
