The best thing about this review is that even though I haven't read this part and thus am being spoiled, it's so weird that I'm not REALLY being spoiled 😅

Yeah there's a lot going on in this part! Definitely recommend giving it a read, the Gyro Johnny friendship and their respective histories are great

This was such a great part with some of the most complex characters Araki has created. Keep up the great work!

Thanks man! I agree, Araki really stepped up the characters in this one. Loved having their backgrounds still be important the whole way through

the whole “the saint” going to america is actually a corner stone of Mormon (LDS) mythology along with items of great value being strewn across the us in burial mounds
actually, if you took the basic plot points and set pieces of the book of mormon, it sort of reads like a lesser jojo arc.
that being said, what happened in the story after “the saint” arrived in america is hideously racist, and finding the items of value was just joseph smith’s first career as a grave robber of native american burial sites when he lived in upstate new york. ultimately it’s meant to justify white colonial rule and the genocide of indigenous americans.
he set arcs in many locations outside of japan in the first continuity, but never went to america to my knowledge.
this is my bias showing, but it makes me wonder if araki included any commentary about america in this arc. the only overtly political sentiment i’ve seen in his work is that the carceral system is evil (stone ocean)
reminds me of the bit of commentary that is included in shaman king once team funbari lands in the us and learns about the patch.
that being said, remembering chocolove’s backstory and what happened to him during the time skip, maybe takei’s analysis is not a good example.
