    HOW I REVIEW:
    As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.

    just an explanation why baby shampoo is better than normal shampoo or dish soap:
    all types of soap have tensides in it which are basically molecules that attract water on one side and dirt on the other - so they encapsulate the dirt and bring it into a solution in the water.
    the difference lies in their acidity: normal dish soap has a very basic pH value so it is really harsh and can damage some materials chemically, while baby shampoo is more neutral and therefore not as harsh.
    still, even with harsh chemicals, most of the cleaning will always be just physically brushing the bigger particles away from the surface ... even with washing clothes most of the part is done by the washing machin physically movng the garments aroung and loosening the dirt particles.
    btw, great video, bo! thanks fpr sharing this advice in that prifessionally produced manner.

      you are welcome - i have studied chemistry once and plan to finish it in the next few years (in addition to having worked a bit at henkel in the development of soaps) - and i plan to incorporate explanations like this into my blog posts about functional clothing, complete with graphics and electron microscope photographs and such. so expect more of those comments when appropriate ;).

      @@dharshancarlos6319 depends on how dirty it is. leather should be cleaned as gently as possible if you want to keep it pristine. if it is really dirty, you can still soak it in water like Bo described in his video. Just make yure you get it air dried and then try to flex the leather parts around a bit since when leather dires it tends to get a bit stiffer. on the other hand, leather gets a nice patina when it gets wet and dries and you might even like that. just keep in mind that you should always air dry leather and dont use heat on the material.

    Thank you so very much for such a detailed, step-by-step process!
    I attended a Veterans Event some while ago, and was given a high grade military backpack, formerly owned by a Veteran from the war.
    It's heavy, very well constructed, with lots of compartments and gear holders.
    However, the zippers-- I noticed-- were almost cemented together with sand-- and very tough to open!
    And at first, because of this--I was going to just give it away to another Veteran friend-- but later I thought, "No-- I'm going to learn how to clean it-- and get the zippers working-- and use it, because it's really a fine piece of military equipment!"
    And, being a Military Veteran myself, I deeply appreciated that one of my own carried it proudly-- and I wanted to do the same!🤗
    I never thought that you could put a backpack in the tub (or a large Rubbermaid Bin) and wash it this way-- most especially the zippers-- and with a toothbrush! Who knew🤔
    I'm excited to get started!

    Great tutorial - only (for your commenters / viewers)... NEVER use the 'rough' side of the sponge.
    That is an abrasive, like sandpaper.. Or a cutoff disc for your angle grinder.
    It wears out, while it wears away the material you're scrubbing...
    (So that WILL damage the fabric or coating you 're desperately trying to preserve by using baby shampoo)
    A nylon brush (like a toothbrush, as suggested in the video) is a great way to agitate dirt, without destroying what's underneath the dirt.
    Hope that helped anyone / prevented any mishaps ;)
    Good video, btw.
    Nicely shot and good informational content.
    Thanks for the tutorial :)

    • @mistercointreau5247
      @mistercointreau5247 6 лет назад +1

      I got the Rush 24, I've had two goes at it and it is cleaner. But I'm thinking of putting it in the washing machine
      as it is dispensable after all. Your backpack is much easier to clean due to its more simplistic design.
      One problem with the 5.11 backpack is that as it has so many different compartments it is really easy to lose stuff in it. You think you've lost something but it's there hidden away in your bag all the time. Oh, and I've got two other more conventional rucksacks but I never use them as I much prefer my army bag.

      @Youknowthebo  6 лет назад

      Hey Andy.
      Of course physically speaking this is possible. But keep in mind that some materials might wrinkle if you do it that way. And ironing a backpack is not possible. And worse case scenario is that you damage the materials. Furthermore some washing mashines might not be big enough to accomodate a bag without you needing to compress the bag. Therefore my advice would be to always hand wash your bags (especially if it is an expensive one like the CPL24)

    and they've come out unscathed. My newer bag was really grimy, and smelt bad, and I had to give it a couple more scrubbings with a washing up pad.
    But now, I've got two identical 5.11 bags that look pukka. I'm now using the older one and getting more use out of it.

    Great content! You mentioned that the waterproofing spray has anti-static properties. Have you noticed any real difference in the amount of dog hair and dust that the cpl24 material picks up after applying the spray?
    I really like this backpack, but the material picking up dust is a deal breaker for me. But if there's a solution then I'd be much more inclined to buy this bag.

    Hi Bo, I remember you mentioned in your review it is a dust and pet hair magnet.
    How is your long(er) term experience with the bag and being a dust and hair magnet? did the anti static work with the CPL24?

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  6 лет назад

      That is correct. It does attract a lot of dog hair. I believe it is due to the silicone coating of the bag. But it is something I got used to over time. And the bag is fairly easy to clean as you can see in the video. It does look even better than before haha
      I have treated it with the spray and for now it does attract less dog hair, but due to the deep black color dust or dirt is still easily visible when you stand it on a dirty ground for instance.

    oh and I do have an idea for a vedio... since you have reviewed so many bags and used most of the bags first hand so conceptualise and build your Dream backpack or carry-on, just a good travel bag.. what sort of functionality would you look for in a bag which bag that you have reviewed, can most closely represent or check the most boxes of your desired features.. cheers

    Bo, can I use pure Castille Lavendar or Peppermint soap, in place of the baby shampoo?
    I'm allergic to the SLS,
    (Sodium Laural Sulfates)
    in regular soaps or shampoos.

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  9 месяцев назад

      That's a good question. I speculate that this should not attack the fabric. I mentioned baby soap because something "harsh" like dish soap can more easily discolor your fabrics. But if it is anti allergic soap for your body I recon it should not damage the fabric. It's just important to relubricate the zippers afterwards

      @Youknowthebo  5 лет назад

      Hello Daayn,
      I have never tested a Hershel bag before, so I don't know what kind of material they use. But baby shampoo is very mild and should not harm any material. But I would still check Hershel's website to see how they suggest to clean their bags.

    • @Youknowthebo
      @Youknowthebo  6 лет назад +2

      Both bags are awesome. It depends on the use case: If you plan on using the bag a lot for work or in the city, then I would go with the CPL24. But if you don't mind the military look AND you want to mod the bag with pouches etc. then the GR1 is the better choice.

    How about pacsafe? Will the wire get any rust?

    • @momotaroreincarnated2xalre107
      @momotaroreincarnated2xalre107 2 года назад

      I had my pacsafe three years back. I just throw it into the washing machine with some detergent spin to gentle for only five minutes then take it out rinse then spin dry it for two minutes. I am still using it still good as new. Not sure about the RFID thingy not working anymore some sort. But this is too much labor work for me. I thought we have evolved?

      @@Youknowthebo HAHA I washed my bag like any ordinary backpack (soaked in detergent and washed), and the ports were fine, no rusts, and it still even worked (i tried plugging in my phone in the usb port with the power bank inside the bag as the power source, no issues with charging). Although, I did try using blowdry at both ends of the wire (the usb port and the 3.5mm audio jack outside the bag, and the USB and 3.5mm AUX plug inside.)

      Hey Ciara.
      I personally would not recommend to wash a backpack in the washingmashine. Depending on the fabric, how the fabric might have been treated and the quality of zippers, you potentially could damage something
