Mr. Birchum is a Vietnam vet, yet he is only in his 40s or 50s. This is a clever reference to the fact that the people behind the show are mentally, emotionally, socially, and politically stuck in the 1990s. Edit: 2K likes jeez. Seriously though, how many of these people look back fondly on the 90s as a time when things were less "political"? They decided politics were a waste of time and then act shocked that the world kept on turning without them. Part of the reactionary current, if you ask me, stems from an embarrassment at their own detachment from politics. Their apolitical nature leaves them with no answers, nothing to believe in, nothing to defend except what keeps them in the comfort zone they believe they had in the Good Old Days.
@@nicholasrage1640 Vietnam was a brutal war hated by the Left, so a conservative veteran supposedly undermines leftist condemnation of US imperialism, much the same way a black conservative character is meant to undermine leftist condemnation of the right as racist. "I went to Nam and I came out conservative! Those hippies have no idea what they're talking about!" The Gulf War was so brief that it didn't become a political touchstone the way 'Nam did. A conservative Gulf vet might seem like a try-hard who romanticizes war when his own experience of war was relatively easy (compared to Nam) and short.

An “anti-woke” show being slammed by the very audience it caters to because of the very PRESENCE of “woke” elements, even to make fun of them, is levels of perfect irony I wasn’t sure was possible. Such a privilege to even be able to walk through life with that much solipsism.
When the thing came up that said the show "wasn't overly political," I paused the video and mused that it probably meant that every major character would be a straight, white male. That's amazing actually. Neuoscientists need to be studying these people at this point, see if there's some energy beam from outer space controlling their brains.
The whole vegan wolf thing sums up conservative "comedy" perfectly. It's not actually a joke, it's just a vignette of someone they don't like getting hurt or killed. Tells you everything you need to know about them as people, really. Also fuck this show, I was a shop teacher for 6 years and take personal offense at the portrayal of shop teachers being fragile masculine white Christian nationalists.
As a conservative, this isn't even remotely true. I and many others that I know find this kind of humor to be terrible. i think the joke was that vegans are annoying, they just shortcutted it by giving him an annoying voice and a man bun and letting cultural context do the rest. the issue is that it's unfunny as fuck to make fun of vegans at this point
The thing about the vegan wolf joke is that it sucks because the vegan wolf didn't die or suffer due to its veganism. It was murdered by the other wolves for being annoying. Which is like... is the show trying to say veganism is bad purely because it annoys people?
@@Ignite_GT I mean if they ate him because he annoyed them then they sort of definitely cared. And it wasn't a very good joke, because lots of things are annoying. One thing that always gets me, is people who say the DMV is bad, which like, it is, but that's because there's literally never enough employees for the even small cities. The worst part is that, in most cases, Karponzi is reasonable. Mr. Birchum regularly abuses his power and the children in his care. Usually, in comedies, the antagonist is meant to be an overreacting buzzkill, or the main character is intended to be portrayed as wrong. Yet, Karponzi is bringing up good points here, such as not forcing random children to build their teacher's deck or not personally enjoying alcohol. Why is the audience meant to hate this guy again?

The people in that story were how they were simply because they were ignorant and didn't know any better. They fully cared about the environment and wanted to do right by agriculture ("it's what plants crave!") they were just too dumb to know how/why they were wrong with their approach. The culture in IDIOCRACY was not motivated so overwhelmingly by hatred and spite, like us. It's not a documentary, it's sci-fi utopia. A depiction of how we could be if only we were kinder to each other.
Its so funny that their core audience got mad at the mere presence of a gay character whose sole purpose was to be mocked, yet the people who this show was supposed to be mocked went nuts with gay fan art because they genuinely like the character.
To them, if a gay character doesn't exist simply to be vanquished (or killed) it's woke representation. It's like most media pre-80s: gay characters or people who indulge in vices, for example, had to pay a big price (frequently death) for those transgressions, in the storyline. They want everyone to think of those people as deviant and deserving of punishment, like most did in the 50s.
@@andylindsaytunes Of all the 50s things they keep trying to drag out, it had to be the shitty parts and not the cool retrofuturist architecture, reliable tech supposed to be built to last for three decades without getting obsoleted, safe nuclear energy and self-sustaining communities with easy access to free entertainment spaces?
I always go back to thinking about Dave Rubin when it comes to the Leopards Ate My Face phenomenon. For a few years he was everywhere, hyped by right wing media as the token gay conservative in a pathetic attempt to argue that conservativism should be the ideology that the queer community embraces. Then when he had outlived his usefulness they discarded him and called him a unholy degenerate for having a husband and kids.
When Ted Cruz sat there and told him to his face that his family shouldn't exist and Dave had to just sit there and suck it down for the grift, that was when I knew that I could start living my life authentically, knowing that I could never be that cringe.
Thats the problem with trying to be a pick me of any marginalized group You sell your soul to be allowed into the club by the bouncer as a special favor, an exception (because you're "one of the good ones") but that's the thing--youre always gonna be there only by their tenuous allowance,by how far you can distance yourself from the marginalized group while still serving the role of a token. But, as said in the video, the "in-group shrinks." And that same bouncer is kicking you to the curb the minute the higher-ups change the club rules. The vegan wolf joke doesn't make sense. The joke shouldn't be that the other wolves would attack them, it's that they would starve. There's a Futurama joke about a vegan lion to this effect
I guess the joke was meant to be that "vegans are weak, and society will eat them because they can't defend themselves" or something along those lines? Or maybe I'm putting more thought into it, than the people who wrote that episode.
That's the problem... There's two jokes right on the cusp of being implemented; One is about how much people hate vegans, and the other one is about vegan being impractical and unnatural (for carnivores). The show just doesn't do either joke; It's basically saying that there is a joke they could make, and then pointing to a hastily written document outlining things about veganism, instead of actually doing the comedy. Which is pretty much what this show does.
@@Levyathyn It also muddles itself by making the wolf look like a HIPSTER stereotype (manbun, snooty attitude, wolfbro looks like a wolf version of an afghan hound), not a VEGAN one (thin to the point of skeletal frailty, scruffy and mangy, lecturing the other wolves about how they're uncivilized beasts or the health benefits of eating salad). They couldn't even hate the stereotype correctly when all they had to do was expy ThatVeganTeacher as a wolf and they'd have managed ONE joke.
Politics all aside, I’m genuinely confused about what we’re supposed to like about the main character. One of the things that stands out the most is how he casually mocks and belittles his son in front of others, in an attempt to help him “man up”. Yes this behavior is seen in other adult cartoons, such as Bojack Horseman and F is for Family, but it’s depicted in a much more negative light, as it should. Good writing has characters with flaws, but it feels like the writers are about as misguided as Birchum himself.
There's a few ways you could go. For the most obvious route, you could make Mr. Birchum's flaws into the butt of the joke, like every generic post-Simpsons sitcom dad.

There is a short story called "the lottery" that was published in the new yorker in 1948. Its about a small rural town that everyone is living very comfortably. (gonna summarize here) But, once a year, the town draws a name from a bowl and the town stones that person to death. The book focuses on a women who in the beginning of the book, is carrying on like everything is great (gossiping, making plans, ect), but then her name is drawn (keep in mind, she showed up to the rally to stone whoever name got drawn herself), and NOW she start pointing out how barbaric it is and questioning why they do it. The elders all say "its always been this way", her peers shame her for risking their prosperity if they didn't murder her (its never clear to anyone how murdering someone once a year makes them prosperous). I think back to it often when i see modern conservative pushes.
It was reprinted multiple times since then. I read it in school in.. 1999 or 2000. But, yeah... It also has religious undertones to it too... with the way children are also involved and taught this is perfectly acceptable... and the towns which stopped doing it are in the wrong... *Shrugs*
It was her husband who drew the marked slip of paper. She objected, so they held the drawing again---and _she_ had the marked paper. Then they stoned her for a good harvest.
That first snippet was definitely hard to watch, but as an American, when she said, "I voted conservatives originally because I thought you were going to be the better choice for me and my children.." And i literally laughed out loud

They're literally pro genocide. There's a scary amount of otherwise normal sounding people that are completely content, if not happy, that Israel might just wipe out Palestinians.
What baffles me is the people who staunchly believe they are being apolitical while constantly talking politics. Like deliberately excluding from fiction people and ideas whose politics you don't like is apolitical. "I don't have a problem with gay people existing, as long as they're only allowed to exist where I can't see them." That's not apolitical. That's what homophobia looks like.
That's because they view anything that deviates from what they believe to be "political" without understanding that their own view point, is in fact also political. They lack the self reflection to understand what is normal to them might not be normal to other people.
Nowadays you can't even receive praise that you made a gay character. People will still be mad at you even if that's what the LGBT community wanted. You can't satisfy anybody anymore. Just like what happened to the backlash of Strange World & Baymax the series. They say we want diversity, but if you give what they want, they will say it's too forced.
And also ironically, by complaining that "everything" is political, they're making it more political. Everyone could be watching a TV show in blissful silence, and then Mr. I-Won't-Admit-I'm-Actually-Conservative yells "It's too political!" and therefore launches a huge discussion on the show's politics.
@@esverker7018 They complain how putting a gay or black character is somehow political but they made it political. But if it’s a white or straight character, there’s no discussion.

Let's presume it was intentional (because the more obvious scenario is far more boring). In this reality, the joke is about how Liberal McGayman doesn't actually have his ear to the ground of elements of culture - even the things that are supposed to be of his own! The official song of the Hillary Clinton campaign and you don't even know Rachel Platten wrote it? Pathetic. On paper, this is actually a solid setup for a quick but pointed joke about the superficiality of liberals. However, the joke falls apart when they select the artist who he mistakes it for. Katy Perry is ... FAR too believable as the author of the song. Maybe they didn't even mean to reference Fight Song, but instead the nothingburger car-commercial-bait song she did for the 2016 Olympics, "Rise"? In which case the joke would be about how milquetoast and insipid those on the left are. That reference would probably fly over the heads of most viewers, though, so probably not. The correct artist to put here, I feel, would have been Lady Gaga. "Born This Way" isn't exactly a fight song, but it's the kind of thing that makes you think. "Fight Song" would be a very non-weird song from the weirdest major artist of the 2010s, but ... eh, it's conceivable. Plus, it's relevant to the character specifically! While Katy's relationship with the queer community was decidedly positive, it was also a bit tenuous overall. Gaga was a gay icon through and through. I'm thinking way too hard about a 3-second joke made by The Daily Wire lol. Just. It feels like an obvious fix!!

It's like how Texas Republicans always run on a platform of fixing what the liberals did to Texas. It's you know pretty standard makes sense, at least from a conservative viewpoint, but it falls apart the minute you have an outside perspective and remembering that Texas has been in control of the GOP for like 20 years or more. So the problems they're 'fixing' are built-in to the conservative system. But they can keep blaming outsiders over and over again to grab power and hold on to it. The Nazi ideology will turn out the same, because it's just going to perpetuate the same problems; the people on top are going to have all of the power, all of the freedom, all of the control, all of the money, and they're not going to spend any of those fixing things for everyone else. And it's just going to be easier to blame an out group then to actually do their jobs.
It's almost like they never cared about who they hated and more just wanted something to hate, just happens Jews were the target. I like the arc conservative characters have. They go from being right about everything, and then, very slowly, over the course of the season, they end up being right about everything.
I mean, it is possible to have a flat-arc protagonist. But there is a reason why almost all protagonist, especially in tv, have positive-change-arcs. It is very boring when the protagonist never learns anything.

Well that joke actually has a deep history and a second layer of meaning. It kind of stopped making sense because of the way language has changed over the generations, but there is still a subtle meaning to it and I don't know if it applies to most people but at least for me, there came a time in my life where I realized the nuance to the 'other side' part, and it gave me a trouble and maybe realized that not everything is just how it looks on the surface. I get what you're going for, but I think it's pretty entertaining that even your example bad joke comparison has more layers and meaning than anything in this show.
Yeah even setting the mountain of political stuff aside, the jokes are just plain awful. The vegan wolf punchline is the wolf says “I’m vegan” and gets eaten? Anyone with even a mild humorous knack could come up with a far better bit than that. Lol it’s just plain shit
I think the funniest part of Mr. Birchum and The New Norm is that they both cater not to actually "right wing" people, but milquetoast "conservatives" who don't really have any kind of philosophical belief in their worldview and simply want to "conserve" the "tradition" of drinking beer, watching sports, and supporting Israel. Because I'll be real with you, I genuinely have not seen a single "right wing" person like either of those two shows.
When you see every aspect of life as a competition, you start demanding everyone be categorized as a winner or a loser, with winners getting all the spoils. They assume they're always a winner, so therefore everyone else is a loser, so why the hell are they getting the same shit I'm getting? That's not fair. Not in their eyes.
Everyone who votes Democratic wants to force their ideologies on someone else, until somone forces their idealogies on them. Now I know that isn't true, but this is what happens when you paint with a broad brush.
Futurama did this with a lion. The people said they got a lion to eat tofu, and it pans to their emaciated lion that just coughs wheezily. That was funny.
and it works beyond being funny because its an actual criticism of veganism, of how vegans often try to force others to conform to their lifestyle, of how their attempts to do this with animals (yes, there are vegans who have actually done this) cause harm the only way it could have worked better is if it included the classism often present in vegans
See the thing is that joke doesn't just stand alone, or as the punchline to the entire scene like it would in a lesser show. You are talking about a joke with a setup in punchline that happen within 7 seconds in a scene, where that is the weakest joke of the scene, sandwiched in a string of jokes at the same pacing. All of this, and it still is better than ANY attempt at humor in this entire show, that is, to quote a youtube animation that parodies this exact style even outside of being right propaganda, "using the rhythms of comedy with no punchline"
conservative media sphere is funny. daily wire made a gina carano movie where she played a strong, independent woman who defended her land. and the audience HATED it with the usual reasons of wokeness, powerful woman, etc... it probably affected her so much, and despite promises of riches from billionaire oligarch funded daily wire, she is threatening disney to give her her old job back. she couldnt even stick out the grfit for that long
I can't see the appeal of conservative media for women unless they have hatred for themselves and other women. Reminds me of Contrapoints' video on Blaire White. You can try to be "one of the good ones" yet still be dehumanized and hated.
The bit about complaining about the diversity of Birchum's Navy Team is hilarious to me, because there's this knee-jerk conservative need to insist that "all my conservative friends are this diverse group who all have conservative views, while all the liberals I know are white-guilty white people merrrrr," and putting this in the show is now backfiring on them with all the reactionaries they've been courting because (*surprise!*), conservatives DO NOT WANT DIVERSITY. They've dragged the Overton Window so far to the right that now conservatives are out and proud about wanting their white American ethnostate, and as Ian Danskin put it, "it's last-hired-first-fired" as the window narrows. Leopards ate their faces, indeed.
Sounds like the words of someone who gives themselves tendinitis doing a woodworking task by hand while someone else gets the same job done in a fraction of the time and effort using a couple power tools. Someone needs to tell the writers that efficiency =/= laziness.
@@Biscotum I'm lazy, I use hand tools, it just takes a long time. The key is to not have a deadline and use the work as a way to relax, throw on some music and chill. The moment something needs to be fixed, the power tools come out. Efficiency is how we beat the Commies.

"I voted for conservatives and they did the conservative thing and now I want a conservative to fix it wah wah" conservatives invent a large amount of their problems.
To be fair, conservatives are pretty good at convincing people that their plans are the solution to the problems people face. That's what politicians with marketing degrees can accomplish.

“Conservative comedy” is kinda just hate speech or trying to pick on people who care about anything. It’s like if south park had zero self awareness or comedy experience.
That’s the main reason I can’t watch much South Park. South Park tries to play both sides but it does that by making fun of anyone who cares about anything, and it gets to a point where I wonder whether the show itself is worth caring about, but that’s just a personal response and I don’t hold anything against people who do like the show. Mr birchum takes what doesn’t work about South Park and runs with it, ending up with some deeply contradictory and confused line of logic. The show thinks that caring about things is stupid, but then makes exceptions for all the arbitrary things the writers care about. It’s not even subjectively questionable, it’s just an incredibly stupid stance to take all around
@@Yelloweyedrobo honestly yeah same. I was into it more when I was a stupid teenager, but as I get older I realize how kinda toothless its stances are now. If I were doing a Vegan Wolf cutaway, it'd probably be a lot more similar to the Fire Truck cutaway with the beats of: - Narrator discusses the might of the Vegan Wolf before cutting to a starved-to-death wolf carcass on the forest floor. - Treats a piece of fruit falling from a nearby tree as "prey," ramping up the intensity of the music like you'd see with a predator on a hunt. - Something else either eats the fruit or knocks it so it rolls downhill, and the narration/music plays a sad sting and talks about how the wolf will need to "try again later." - Throughout, lots of cinematic camera angles and closeups of the (in)action. Play into what the joke is parodying and the expand upon the absurdity of the premise rather than treating the premise itself as the punchline.
All politics aside. The fact that Mr. Birchum mocks a type of person. And it's fans don't like it because it has that type of person. Is genuinely the most fucking funny thing

Also they are the ones that started it, coined the term, and blasted it at their audience for over a decade now. They perpetuate it, antagonize it, and provoke it. They crave it. Love to hate it. They need it. Otherwise, they'd have to look at actual problems and that's hard.
the problem is that they're not losing. yes, their attempts at comedy, media, television, and social commentary/critique fall flat on their face but that's not actually a problem for them. for all intents and purposes, there is almost no difference between a show that succeeds that promotes their propaganda and a show that fails that does, both are equally useful from a narrative standpoint. not to mention the fact that their talking points take a second to say and longer to debunk. they say something short, quippy and wrong and then you have to give a detailed rebuttal, giving you the illusion of playing defense. classic strategy laid out in the now-classic alt-right playbook by Ian danskin

Carolla was doing the Mr. Birchum character on local radio years before Crank Yankers went on the air. It was originally just a comedic persona and had nothing to do with politics.
God, the vegan carnivore gag was done 20 years ago by Futurama when they taught a lion to eat tofu. That show got more laughs out of a single cough that the entirety of the Daily Wire.
This isn't even the first time this has happened to the Daily Wire; back when they made Terror on the Prairie that too was decried as "woke" for having a female protagonists.
DailyWire knows diversity casts are good for marketing yet still criticize it and utilize it themselves. Their nonsensical ideology has trapped them in a corner with their audience.
They´ve significantly contributed to cultivating the far-right in America and now made a show that can only be described as "moderate" in comparison. Truly "amazing".

Could you imagine if someone tried to count up all the straight characters or make a list of shows with no gay characters 💀 it boggles the mind
6:48 it would be a joke, then. A vegan wolf being eaten by wolves isn't a joke anymore than someone getting kicked in the groin. You can laugh but you're just doing it because you're uncomfortable and immature and the more uncomfortable and immature you are, the harder you're going to need to laugh to maintain the cognitive dissonance. The Firetruck isn't killing me after the 50th time hearing but I can still recognize there's a punchline; "The Ambulances will have to wait."
the vegan wolf in family guy would either try to eat meat and fail because he’s so morally disturbed by it, or he’d have a conversation with the deer, or he’d eat a plant and throw up everywhere and another wolf would say “that’s poison ivy” and he’d say “i’m not a human nobody taught me plants!” and he’d start crying. i know that doesn’t sound funny on paper but i think it would be.
Or they would have the joke be about a pack of wolves hunting soy lattes (or something like that) through the forest. It could have worked because of the absurdity of it, but it still wouldn't have been a good joke.

Yup, it's "last hired first fired" when it comes to fas-errr-conservatives appealing to the groups they marginalize. Often quite literally...
When Ted Cruz sat there and told him to his face that his family shouldn't exist and Dave had to just sit there and suck it down for the grift, that was when I knew that I could start living my life authentically, knowing that I could never be that cringe.
Thats the problem with trying to be a pick me of any marginalized group
You sell your soul to be allowed into the club by the bouncer as a special favor, an exception (because you're "one of the good ones") but that's the thing--youre always gonna be there only by their tenuous allowance,by how far you can distance yourself from the marginalized group while still serving the role of a token. But, as said in the video, the "in-group shrinks." And that same bouncer is kicking you to the curb the minute the higher-ups change the club rules.
The problem with being a pick me is, at the end of the day, they're never going to pick you. No matter how much you throw other queer folks or folks of color or people in poverty under the bus, nothing permanently can guarantee you wont share the same fate.
@@anangoohns And the thing that is so insidious about it is that those most likely to be pick me's are the ones who think they aren't "like those other ones" - those already isolated by some friction with their own demographics.

I guess that is why Nazi are the execeptions to the Tolerance rule, while I still consider them a tragedy of a person rather than subhuman, they are a tragedy a mistake of flaws becoming so bad kidness no longer or barely effects it.

If I were doing a Vegan Wolf cutaway, it'd probably be a lot more similar to the Fire Truck cutaway with the beats of:
- Narrator discusses the might of the Vegan Wolf before cutting to a starved-to-death wolf carcass on the forest floor.
- Treats a piece of fruit falling from a nearby tree as "prey," ramping up the intensity of the music like you'd see with a predator on a hunt.
- Something else either eats the fruit or knocks it so it rolls downhill, and the narration/music plays a sad sting and talks about how the wolf will need to "try again later."
- Throughout, lots of cinematic camera angles and closeups of the (in)action.
Play into what the joke is parodying and the expand upon the absurdity of the premise rather than treating the premise itself as the punchline.

@@ldcg106 Ah, yes, bothsidism, because of course they are both bad: one takes away women's bodily autonomy and makes them legally inferior to men; the other wants universal health care. See? Equally bad!

It’s honestly terrifying to see so many people use other people a catalyst for their discontent. They are held together by hate and when their is no one left to hate they turn inward on themselves to survive.
It’s an easy excuse to justify why the feel wronged by the world rather then better adapting to the world they live in.

Think I've gotta agree with you there...
I find the whole thing amusing. Not the show itself, but how bad it is and the right-wingers refusal to watch something meant to pander to them.
So conservative comedy is still just "look at this person representing ideologies I reject and how pathetic we made them sound. Please laugh!"

I’ve been trying to put myself in the shoes of someone who is so sensitive to the mere idea of gay people existing, that they’ll intentionally avoid ANY media or anything that acknowledges them. How shallow and shameful a life that must be, that your core identity is based on shame over something existing. How stubborn, lonely, and arrogant you must be to be afraid of any mention of an idea. It’s like you’re avoiding a hazard, like you fear it, like you have some shame or trauma you’re avoiding.
It would be one thing if you said “I avoid fireworks because I served in Iraq”, but It’s like if I said “I avoid social media because there are Malaysians on there”, how lonely and sad you must be.

All too often, the person who had their face eaten isn't simply fooled into voting for more, they know their face is gone and happy about it. That's because they saw someone they dislike more getting their face eaten too. It becomes less about who learned their lesson and more about the cruelty of the people who vote for it.
Yep. Peep any right-wing message board and you'll see them celebrating the supreme court for granting the president near unlimited power just because they want Trump to use it to go after his enemies, despite the fact that Biden has that power now too. They will literally eat shit if a left-leaning person has to smell their breath. Pure spite... because they hate thinking about LGBT or brown people.
THANK YOU, EXACTLY. I've crossed paths with a number of people online over the last couple years who were actually quite open and explicit about how as long as the people they hated were getting shafted, they could tolerate getting shafted themselves. The only thing required for any manner of "happiness" for these people is the "others" are suffering

As someone with zero experience in audio editing, holy hell does mr birchum have bad audio editing. I definitely noticed on some level that the lines sounds wrong in a way i couldnt pinpoint, but it cleared up as you went into it.
I watched Shaun talk about the working conditions of Daily Wire so the subpar quality of their show doesn't surprise me. The people in control probably wanted to get their product out as soon as possible and didn't care about terrible punch in voice lines.
Mr. Birchum is seemingly a wood shop teacher because they felt like harping on how those "woke" artsy types are allergic to putting in effort or breaking a sweat. But I'll tell you for a fact that any half-decent artist would have stayed late to fix that horrific audio rather than put their name on it.
17:00 Sadly, this is not true. There was always a fringe group that was antivax. The general public just pointed and laughed at them for the most part.
So it turns out that when you teach your audience to buy into a nebulous idea of "WOKE" then train them to obsessively search for that in every piece of media they watch, they'll do that even to your own show...who could have thought?
That's the thing with the right-wing audiences these grifters cultivate. It doesn't matter how cult-like their devotion is, if you fail to live up to the absurd standards you promote then they WILL turn on you, because that's what you taught them.
