    A double trip down memory lane. A mate of my Dad carted Cattle in West Qld with an R model in the 70's with a quad box pulling 2 deck doubles. I tagged along in school holidays That man amazed me it was full on hard rough work, camping in a swag and bloody noisy and he taught me how to drive a truck but I fell in love with it. Later years 1980 I was hauling K102 871 15sp od Kenworth with doubles across the top end but marriage put a end until a mate asked me to give him a hand 2 up pulling machinery out of Brisbane to Cairns with his SAR 8-92 18sp while that was luxury the old R model was more fun. Love the Vids, keep it up and I will keep watching

      Hi Graeme, this is a good story mate. I’m sure those blokes did it tough years ago in these trucks. Just imagine driving it all day and camping and getting up to do it all again, certainly we’re hard blokes. My family all did it too years ago working in the bush. Great trucks though. I haven’t got a Mack like that yet but I do have a few old Kenworth cabover trucks with 8v71 in them. They featured in earlier episodes. Thanks for reaching out mate and there’s plenty more to come

    Gday Steve, absolutely shit hot, the McGrath won’t take a lot to get right, I had the privilege of driving a R686 logging and float work and a T bag tipper pulling a dog, outa all the trucks I drove these 2 were the happiest fun times, you can’t beat old school, I started off in newish kenworths with 500 and 600hp and getting into 350hp was the best lesson, that taught ma a lot, awesome job mate, cheers

We are doing up the 46 ford truck at the moment, but we may do a bit on it at the same time. The old trucks are great to drive, like you I also used to drive an R600 flintstone on float work. It was a 13 speed fuller and a 359 4 valve Mack engine. I used to move around our earthmoving equipment with it. Now we have a 550hp Kenworth and it’s not the same. I don’t do it much now either. Growing up in QLD in the 70/80's, you always knew there was a White somewhere in the distance. There were plenty of these units around then. The unmistakable sound of that engine is something else. That is a 73 model like myself and it looks in better nick, so a big thumbs up for the preservation. The camera in the cab is a good idea.

    • @stevesplacedownunder
      @stevesplacedownunder  Год назад

      Hi mate thanks for watching. The Whites had a sound of their own, even with a Cummins in it for whatever reason. Certainly a great product. It is a 73 yes. Was in very poor condition, hence the reason I had to paint it. The camera is a good idea but it is very rough, being mounted straight to the window there’s no shock absorbing at all but still works alright

      @@stevesplacedownunderhey Steve that’s just a myth that stems from the Coriolis effect. The myth was that the air spins different directions based on what hemisphere you live in but the air pressure different is so marginal that it’s nothing but exactly that. A myth. The coriolis force isn’t strong enough to make any difference at all on a small volume of water. It’s purely only the positioning of the water jets.

    Loved watching the Mack going throught the gears .
    Its saddening to see all the modern equipment come out with automatic gear boxes .
    In my view , a manual box makes for a far more skilled driver / opperator.
    Moreover, it allows the rig to work at a more usable range , particularly in hilly mountainous country .

Trailer tyres for a low to middle range one would be $280-300 each fitted, that’s Australian dollars. It’s not bad but it adds up also. • @stevesplacedownunder
      @stevesplacedownunder  Год назад

      Hi mate. The main difference is that it’s all in one box in a quad box, where other makes are a separate 5 speed main box and a 2,3 or 4 speed auxiliary box linked by a jack shaft between them. A 2 speed diff is 2 different ratios in the on axle selected by a button or a lever on older trucks. Used mainly with a 5 speed main gearbox. A lot of the old trucks used them years ago to give more ratios because engines weren’t overly powerful back then.
