@edt6044 Well, I can tell you what I know. Apparently, according to Chuck Bail, the movies director and producer, as much as they could. The actor that played Bannon, the driver of the cobra, never came to terms with the Gearbox in the Cobra. Raul Julia, aka Franco did learn how to drive the Ferrari rather well. He achieved this by practicing on Chuck Bails own Ferrari Dino 246.
I remember the promotional poster saying "Gumball Rally where the cars are the stars" This movie is awesome! I wish they had've made a second movie as they set themselves up great with the ending the had.
Such a good movie - soundtrack, characters, settings, cars. As a car nut love the scene with the Camaro chasing down through a forest section at speed.
When I saw this movie as teen, I fell in love with the Cobra and Daytona. Fast forward 10 years to the early 90’s, my grandmother pegged it and left me a small fortune. So what do I do? I have a replica made and a Daytona made much to the disappointment of my parents lol. Well I fulfilled my dream even though they were as close as an ocd kid could go, they were spot on. I drove the nuts off them, they gave me enormous please and I should have never listened to my ex wife to get rid of them and she hated me talking with people where ever we went about whatever I was driving etc. I’m such a twit! Round two for the next inheritance soon, so a Kirkham will in the pipeline! Mind you there’s a few butchered 365 GTB’s knocking around that are ‘affordable’, so my dream round 2 comes to life again but upgraded…..
I remember watching this on tv in the seventies love it. the car's were the real stars of this movie , but great comedy moments fantastic film wish they would do a remake with more classic cars as these love the cobra and Daytona and the roar of them engine's is great 😊
Watched this as a kid and fell in love with the Cobra. Fast forward about 25 years and I’m married with a good job and it just so happens there is a Superformance dealer about 20 miles from where we live. I keep telling my wife how I’ve always wanted a Cobra and bless her she says “Well either piss or get off the pot, I’m tired of hearing you talk about the car. If you want one, get one.” So I ordered my solid indigo blue cobra in May of 2002, had to have it shipped from South Africa, would take about 3-5 months to arrive. Found out my wife was pregnant with our first child in July. She looked at me and said, “You do realize that if you hadn’t already ordered your Cobra there is no way in hell I’d let you order one now.” Granted mine is a replica and it’s got a 351, not the 427, but still makes a great noise. That final part where they exit and the Cobra pulls alongside the Ferrari and just muscles by is simply perfection.
Favorite car movie of all time. Built dozens of cobra model cars because of this scene. Finally bought a bought a Superformance Cobra a while back. License tag "GUMBOLL". Someone already had "GUMBALL".
If you're in California, one of the Daytonas used in the film has/had that plate...it was on the cover of an issue of Automobile Magazine back in the '80's.
@@toddjohnson7133 Actually, I found out I'm right - and wrong! Last time that CA plate was seen on a car was 10 years ago - on one of the Cobras used in the film!!! There's a video of it on here of when it & a 289 Cobra saw light for the first time in about 20 years, and the real plate is on the movie car. That same car now resides in Montana, with a similar Montana plate. Now I don't know if the plate on the Daytona was real or not - or, perhaps the then owner of the Cobra also owned one of the Daytonas. I also don't know if the new owner still has it hanging in his garage in Montana, or if the former owner kept it.
Saw this and Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry when I was a kid at the local drive in that still exists! I'm 53. Lol Life changing! Anyone notice that the COBRA has nose damage near the beginning of the river scene
Can’t imagine the studio buying the Ferrari for 35,000 dollars and then selling it back to the dealer after the movie. Probably get about 2 mil for a clean one today. Even the director said “ I should have kept it!”
I LOVED this movie back in the day. I wonder - just wonder - if they used a real, genuine SOHC 427 SC aluminum bodied side oiler(the real McCoy) to make this movie. Surely not. Even as soon after this in summer of 1980 I saw an original 427 Ford Cobra in the showroom of Omega Motors in Beverly Hills that listed for $75,000. Adjust that for inflation, plus the rarity today added in! i I doubt it was a kit car. In fact, I don't even know if Cobra kit cars even EXISTED in 1980. Today, those cars - that are, of course, fully authenticated - at an auction like Barrett-Jackson can go into the millions without a problem.
The SOHC was never included into the Cobra. The 427 was a "rare" engine as those for the Cobras were pirated away from NASCAR teams. The SOHC was started in late Feburary 1964, when Ford was getting clobbered in NASCAR...the engine was developed within about three months for NASCAR duty..but was abruptly rejected by NASCAR for racing...The Cobras never saw the SOHC installed...

The high-pitched wail of the Ferrari V12 contrasting with the beligerent bellow of that massive 427 V8 - maginificent
I love this movie. I used to watch it as a kid and my favourite was the Ferrari Daytona. Now as an adult, I'd kill for a 427 Cobra!
I went to the cinema every weekend it was on.....the visceral bellow of that 427.......
Joy to behold
How much of the driving did the actors actually do?

The sound of that Ferrari is brutal in the beginning of this movie, driven through the city, pedal to the metal!
Absolutely !!!
That's the sound they used for the car in the show Hardcastle & McCormick
That 427 fly-by exhaust note is just glorious!
This race is still awesome! This movie really captured the thrill of speed with the actors

Gumball Rally is why I started loving Cobras!
When I was a little boy watching this is was all about that v12. I now appreciate it all much more the sounds are well captured and the 911 ❤

The production company had two of each car (and, scenes were shot out of sequence).
The tune played during the river race, I heard it before but can not remember the name of the tune
Shazam will find it i'm sure 😁
Racing priceless cars through turds...
The 3:00 minute mark sounded like Nascar Cup cars accelerating out of turn four.
"Second gear".......then all hell breaks loose🤣🤣🤣
Wow that Cobra is just training against the Ferrari
Plus idk if any1 noticed but the windshield wipers on the Ferrari go past the frame
Fantastique !
The engine noises as they comeout of the "river" is pure petrolhead porn 10/10

The Greatest Car Scene in Car Movie History.... A Real 427 SC Cobra vs A Real Ferrari Daytona Convertible !!!!
