They did overdub some actually, but it appears all from the correct car. Most obvious is the Ferrari 365 in several scenes. But again, the sounds used seem to indeed be from the Ferrrari 365
They spent a lot of effort to record the real car sounds. They knew that it would be the only time most people would hear someone red-lining a Ferrari Daytona or an AC Cobra.

Now, 30 years later, i still enjoying with this magic movie, because every scene every sound....all it,s real No computer images, no cgi, all is true....we never will have a movie like this
I loved the film. The two old men in the 300SL drunk and relaxing through the race was great. The Cobra/Ferrari duels made the best noise in the movie.
I was 16 and grew up in Prescott where much of this was filmed. They even had the Ferrari and Cobra on display not far from where the van was blown up. Great experience watching it being filmed and great fun to watch the movie again!
The Shelby Cobra 427 is my dream car. The Ferrari daytona is my oldest brothers dream car. We've not been on speaking terms for over 10 years. IF I ever win the damn lottery, I'm gonna buy both cars and just to piss him off, I'll make sure he doesn't ever get to sit in the Daytona.
I saw this in the theater when it came out in '76. The Good Humor ice cream truck that came around our neighborhood sold packs of Gumball Rally bubblegum for a time. I bought this on DVD last summer.
To me, this is THE best Race driving movie. It makes the Cannonball movies look ridiculous. I lived in LA for a decade, and EVERY time I saw the LA River , I would think if these scenes, along with the one from Grease! The Ferrari and Cobra Match up, is LEGENDARY. The rich white guy in the Ferrari , is the fellow who wrote and sung the ballad of Jeremiah Johnson. He died very young.
The funny part of when the engine blows us the cop is chasing the Camaro and Gary Busey says “put it up to 140, if he catches us I’ll eat my Airdale!” thinking it’s the fake cops when it’s a real state trooper chasing them
This is far better than Canon Ball and Canon Ball 2,both of those were just stupid play offs from the producers of Smokey and The Bsndit, which got stupid after the second one.
I read several years ago that except for the crash scenes, the actors insisted and were allowed to do all of the actual driving themselves, including blasting through Manhattan. There was also a rumor that in the original movie draft, the Jaguar XKE was supposed to finish third. But because of the trash Lucas electrical system in the Jaguars of that era, they really couldn't get the car to run, and no other XKE's were available on short notice, so the script was altered during filming.
The Italian way of driving 😅 OMG i love the howl of that high revving V12. Toby Halicki really loved cars. Is this a genuine ultra rare Daytona Spyder or a conversion ?
Fun fact. The ambulance that was used in the cannonball run movie was the same one that Brock Yates (writer of the movie) and Hal Needham (director of the movie) drove in the last Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in 1979.
Hey, does anybody know the name of that little Italian song Smithy and Franco sing right after they've outrun Roscoe in the helicopter? I've been looking for it forever, it's driving me crazy whenever I think of the movie.

That Ferrari doesn't even have a chance against that Cobra. When he stomps on the gas look how easy it walks away. He had to pedal that Cobra so it would look like a real race. 427 COBRA
I'm sure the Ferrari has it top end,....but off the line, cant beat a 427 Cobra. By what I've heard they didnt use overdubs for the sounds, and no sped up film. And made way before CGI.
@@jhzab666 They did undercrank the cameras for some shots for a sped up effect. However they did a lot of REAL fast driving. Awesome movie with real cars. I have a Superformance 427 SC with a real 427 FE....used to also have a Ferrari 308 GTS...the 427 hammers...the 308 not so much. The best car scenes are at night with the Cobra and Ferrari duking it out....not in this shitty conglomeration....smh. Btw....Gumball...

This movie weirdly tries to pass off Arizona (where they filmed it) as... every other part of the country. They leave New York City and literally start driving through Western mountains. Do they think people wouldn't notice??
Someone should remaster this gem and make a TV series out of this but with more cars just like an actual gumball machine maybe half of the cannonball spots with the world moving to E cars and self driving it would be a fond farewell to the classic and artistic era of fast cars and in this new series we should get some more trucks and vans that would be cool or have a series leading up to a movie about one last cannonball where if you build it and it’s fast you can race it every model every engine as a way to leave the gas era behind and accept the new green energy era.
One of the few movies where the engine sounds actually match the vehicles. No overdubbing!
They did overdub some actually, but it appears all from the correct car. Most obvious is the Ferrari 365 in several scenes. But again, the sounds used seem to indeed be from the Ferrrari 365
