  • Melodrama about genetics and virtual reality? This can only be the clone saga!
    Originally uploaded October 25th, 2010.

It’s easy to see WHY this kind of thing was so easily confused by people - the internet was only starting to come into greater prominence, 3-D computer graphics and models were showing off the potential for special effects or just general animation purposes, and technology that allowed you to be completely immersed in video games, to the point where you were DIRECTLY interacting with them without a controller as if you were actually inside of the game seemed to be coming soon.
However, virtual reality never really took off beyond the initial hype. The technology just wasn’t there. Hell, it still isn’t really there. But when you use a word like “reality,” people are quick to assume it’s, well, real, forgetting that first word and thinking that virtual reality wasn’t a term used to describe immersion, but rather some sort of parallel universe that could be merged with physical reality. The last shining star of virtual reality was the first Matrix movie, which of course was still head-scratching with the idea of virtual injury somehow causing real ones (what physically CAUSES a blood vessel to pop when you THINK you’re getting hit? I can see stress-induced heart attacks or seizures, but injuries like that?), but at least seemed to recognize that a simulation was JUST a simulation, that virtual reality and the real world are two different things and they cannot be “merged” together like so much bad science fiction seemed to think it could.
Because I’ve become more preoccupied by the utter uselessness of Judas Traveler, I haven’t yet revisited the Dr. Octopus established in the Clone Saga, but rest assured it will happen.

Naruto85RasenShuriken If you mean dark knight returns no question asked it was a whole sale rip off. At the same time the dark knight return was a in and of it self and a story that has been told countless times throughout the history of written fiction. Frank miller did not invent the idea of a story about a hero getting back into the game after he retired that's old and done all we're looking for is a decent take on it. Reign was a good take on it that is all it's required to be.

    • @Naruto85RasenShurike

Nina Michel If you like REIGN, that's all good! I just didn't care for it as the dialogue was cringe inducing for me and TDKR is in my Top 5 Comics of all-time (mainly because it was a intricate and complex character study of who Batman was; and it brought him out of the campy Adam West version and back to his dark roots) and I would've been okay with REIGN being a rip-off if it was at least well-written. But for me it was just poorly written, and felt out of Spidey's character to me in a similar manner to how Linkara hates SUPERMAN AT EARTH'S END. But that's just my opinion...

Linkara mentioned how the story was ripping off the iconography of that time Spider-Man pushed off the rubble, but it doesn't just do that, but also rips off a lot of the set-up. Relative of Peter is dying due to radiation caused in part by Peter, get serum that can help cure it, serum is stolen by doctor octopus, spidey tracks serum to underwater base, defeats doc ock but is pinned by rubble, pushes rubble off in feat of strength.

Yeah, everyone is always being exposed to microscopic levels of radiation, radiation isn't some super poison that a little bit can kill, you need a large amount to cause radiation poisoning. Also the whole contaminating peter on the genetic level is stupid and makes no sense, there are radioactive elements in our bodies already like potassium which our bodies need to function, it's why we can use radiometric dating to figure out how old bones are. It's really just forced drama because the writers think spider-man being dangerous to his love interests is a shtick that never gets old.

The Jackal was apparently a research assistant to the Herbert Edgar Wyndham aka the High Evolutionary (who also appeared as an antagonist in Spider-Man Unlimited cartoon) so I imagine he learned most of his knowledge from the High Evolutionary who was inspired by the works of geneticist Nathaniel Essex aka X-Men villain Mr Sinister (thus providing potentially more supporting evidence for Linkara's theory that a lot of bad marvel storylines and/or events can be traced back to the X-Men)! Also, the Seward Trainer was also associated with the High Evolutionary (Trainer, Warren, High Evolutionary, & Mr. Sinister all are geneticists, so it makes sense that they'd be either associated or at least know of each other's research) so there is another prominent geneticist connected to the High Evolutionary for you!

A guy who used to run Shadowrun games in my old crew had a really good way to make damage from VR bleed over into the real world. The way he did it, when you attacked someone in cyberspace, you weren't actually attacking them directly. Instead, you were attempting to hack their VR device - which would usually be plugged into their cybernetic implants - and overload it so that it would send damaging electrical shocks directly into their body.
I always liked that more than the whole "the mind makes it real" thing.

I actually really liked THE GREATEST RESPONSIBILITY as I agree with Linkara that while the new Dr. Octopus is bland (though to be fair, she's not annoying like the Jackal and Spidercide, or boring like Judas Traveller), the computer science is absurdly ridiculous, and the artwork isn't that great (though I thought it was actually decent in the last issue), the areas where this comic succeeds are done extraordinarily well! The scenes with Peter and MJ were just beautiful (love the scene where they feel the baby kick for the first time), and the amount of emphasis given to Peter's fears about becoming a neglectful father serve as respectful catalyst for Ben Reilly to take over as they are faithful to the character's theme of responsibility!
Overall, THE GREATEST RESPONSIBILITY is a comic whose flaws I can easily overlook as the good areas are phenomenally well-handled!

Personally, I've always liked the idea of a villain falling in love with the hero pretty amazing, just showing how deep of a connection the villain and hero have, weather or not the hero loves them back is a topic for a different day but it just goes to show how it could be used in storytelling and how it could add drama for the plot, how the other heroes would act, how the other villains would, how it effects decisions, its just so interesting to me, and we have seen it comics before, in fact, we have seen it as something as goofy as power rangers at least 2 times, time force and super megaforce, and yet its never shown in here, why is that ?

There’s only one time I can think of where the “die in the game = dying in real life” was explained in a believeable way. In the SG-1 episode “Avatar,” Teal’c is in danger of eventual death because of dying in a video game his brain is stuck in, keyword “eventual.” It’s explained that the stress of fighting and dying again and again and again will eventually push him into cardiac arrest. That at least makes sense.
What annoys me about the buried under rubble scene is that we see Scarlet Spider crouched right next to Peter. Why didn’t Ben help Peter? Wouldn’t that be such a better scene, not only showing that their friends and brothers now but subtly suggesting Peter is no longer able to keep doing this and that Ben is has taken his place as the new hero.
Oh my gosh, the ridiculous ideas we had when cyberspace and VR were still new . . . The VR bomb thing was kind of believable, if you assumed the dinosaurs were hard-light holograms or created by some kind of molecular manipulation, but Doc Ock’s constant rantings of an “interface between virtual reality and the real world” just makes me think she has a deficient vocabulary.

The way that usually makes sense to me is that whatever device that allows you to interface with the computer can't reliably prevent signals of a harmful level of power or more subtle methods of attacking the brain from reaching it, thus your brain is assaulted by ten thousand amps of current or perhaps a precise series of attacks on key parts of the brain.

  • @DogGirlSyri
    @DogGirlSyri 10 лет назад +1

Hey Linkara, it's generally less to do with the brain popping blood vessels as cardiac arrest, it's where the urban legend of "If you dream you're falling and hit the ground, you'll die." When the brain believes that the images perceived are real it will set the heart on red alert making it pump like a maniac. This is because when your body is damaged it rushes blood to the injury as a method of temporary healing (i.e. blood clotting to seal a cut.) so that the bodies natural processes can take over to heal itself without risk of malformation. In more rigid structures (such as bones) the coagulated blood doesn't provide a strong enough hold and thus an outside implement is needed to hold it in place.

I always thought that in a weird way, the whole if you're mind truly believes you're dead then your body will follow suit. Not dramatically like you'll start bleeding or anything but it'll just cease function. Also in a way like in hysteria or in some mental cases where you feel things that aren't actually there, like pain in your leg when there's nothing wrong with you.

I might be saying this cause I'm a fan of Digimon and Tron but what's fiction is fiction. It's kind of a buzzkill when one state facts to something that's intended to be harmless fun. But given your line of work I guess you have every reason to be factual.

I'm a biology major. While not an expert on spiders (too bad I'm sure it would've gotten me a job with Black Web) , but in invertebrate zoology I learned that not all webbing is the same and if my memory doesn't fail me, some spiders can produce up to seven different types. I can't tell you if any of them are waterproof or the like, but I like the idea that Spider-man took that inspiration from nature....how he's changing the silks on the fly without physically removing the web cartridges, I'm not sure of that either. If he's using the organic ones, I can maybe give it a pass.

Question: In the first half of the Clone Saga, Kaine had premonitions of Mary Jane getting killed by some unknown person. Kaine killed the original Doctor Octopus and the Grim Hunter thinking that they might be the man responsible (Doc Ock learned of Spidey's secret identity while curing him of a virus and the Grim Hunter tracked Peter's scent right to his apartment). Was Peter himself the guy Kaine envisioned? Time Bomb seems like it perfectly wrapped up the "Dead Mary Jane" premonitions, since Peter would have killed her if not for Ben and the New Warriors slowing him down long enough for him to snap out of it. Or was Kaine foreseeing Norman Osborn, the man ultimately responsible for the ENTIRE Clone Saga mess?

All I think of is that whenever I see her virtual reality nonsense is wish that I was watching "Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase" or even the first Matrix film. At least those are fun ways to explore the concept. Here, it feels like the creative team did it to try to stay relevant with the 90s when in hindsight it's one of the most dated things about the Clone Saga as a whole.

Worse. Aunt May had a beautiful death scene in ASM #400 (before the Clone Saga went off the rails) written by J.M. DeMatteis. In the last issue of the Clone Saga, where they bring back Norman Osborn and say he was behind everything, there is a nursemaid hired by Osborn who poisons Mary Jane's food, causing her to go into early labor. Then she goes to the hospital and is there at the scene of birth. They show her after the birth walking off from the hospital with a baby sized package and then then delivering the package to Norman Osborn and the doctor tell Mary Jane its a miscarriage. A year or two later now that Norman Osborn is the main antagonist of the book, in "The Final Chapter" Peter is told that Norman Osborn has kidnapped and is keeping May. He assumes this means their baby who they were going to name "May" and goes on a rampage against Norman Osborn. However, he finds Osborn's lair and when he opens the door... its Aunt May! They do a stupid retcon saying the Aunt May that died was a genetically modified actress that staged her death.
