Ant is a master of mental play in this challenge, he got into Eric's head by simply telling the truth and leave out the details that Eric was fishing for, making him think Ant was lying.

i think at the point when it was showing ant's full team with victory road pokemon and rayquaza vs pointcrow's two pokemon team. It was over. Ant already grinded and pointcrow didn't even get to the point where he realised he was too weak.
The water cave one is a soft lock if you stop surfing if you fulfil all 3 criteria a. don't have a surf user b.Don't have the lens to reveal the smeargle c.Don't have a fishing rod (if you have old rod then its a very long soft lock)

What a fantastic display of psychology: Eric keeps lying about far ahead he is and when Ant says in truth that he really is that far ahead, Eric thinks "since I am lying about being super far head, then that must mean he is also totally lying which means that in truth Im actually like 4 badges ahead because he must be super far behind to lie about all of this!"
Contrast this to Ant. Rarely ever lied, because why would he need to? He knows pokemon better than Crow, that's undisputed, and he was confident in his own progress through and through. Whenever Crow lied, he was more than able to rationally think about Crow's ability, his nature, and his psychology; he knew what was feasible, and from there knew what wasn't true.

The waterfall fix was insane game knowledge. To just know that a certain pokemon learns it naturally and go get it is so far beyond what I could ever pull off.

I find it kind of poetic that in order to find Drake, the dragon master, SmallAnt had to catch a goldeen, a pokemon based off of Karp, and have it accend a waterfall. Just like the legend of old, where a karp climbed a waterfall and became a dragon.
Having that Rayquaza on his team that early just equated to him steamrolling the rest of the game. The fact that he knew that Drake was going to be on top of that waterfall, was an amazing hunch tbh.
I just started watching Ant’s content and I gotta say this dude has an encyclopedic knowledge of Pokémon. It’s crazy he knew how to bypass the waterfall glitch with Goldeen
Fun fact you needed 2 years later: waterfall used to be Goldeen/Seaking's signature move. In gen I, it had no use outside battle. Only in later gens would it be made an HM. They're still the only pokemon to naturally learn the move

While it's cool having the Elite 4 all in one place. Drake being in that one part of Meteor Falls (which is especially cool because it's the one place in the game you can catch Bagon) made me realize how cool it would also be for the player to have to hunt down the Elite 4 and find where they are. They could be in especially difficult places to find, leading to a greater emphasis on exploration.
Isn't this basically the organization of gen 6 or 7 idk which cause I played neither but I heard in one of them the equivalent of the E4 fucked off and you had to go find them or smth

The best parts of the video were the cuts to Eric either being excited he finally beat something or struggling to find something Ant already beat 20 minutes ago
When he tried it himself it took five hours to find the second gym, and after the hour of clearing five more gyms, another hour to complete state and Liza’s, and then a few more to complete gym 8. PointCrow may be good at Pokémon but he is bad at strategizing, and he went up against a person who does challenge runs for a living. The outcome was inevitable.
@@randomyoutuber5563 He didn’t really lose because he underestimated Smallant, had he been able to gauge how well Ant was actually doing he would have had a sense of urgency which may have helped him a small amount, but he lost because he was ill prepared to play someone with Smallant’s level of game knowledge and weirdly useful resourcefulness. Oh, and most of all, he lost because he dared to ever speak poorly of Wooper, an unforgivable sin which gave the gods reason to give true appreciators of Wooper good luck.

The strategy employed here by Ant was so good. I'm sure he probably knows Emerald inside and out, but that big brain waterfall play had me absolutely slack-jawed.
It's really funny switching back and forth between the two because of how different their teams are. Ant keeps sweeping all the early gyms with his level 40 Lairon and Golbat, while Crow's starter isn't even level 20.
This was so entertaining to watch. @@priestesslucy if you whiteout to Evergreen you only get 2 warps to not softlock. Dewford or Sootopolis would be the next worst whiteout if you don't have surf with only like 6 warps to escape.

To me, it was very clear that ant was fighting Zubats to white out, he even mentioned that one of his Pokemon has Roar so after PP in all other moves got depleted, Roar prolonged the soft lock even more. And I think he very clearly stated he lost X number of minutes to it.

Technically there are 2 entrances to Drake, but that one also may have been a Waterfall entrance as well idk what happened to Smallant that he couldn't find Wallace to give him Waterfall, like he completed the Legendary Storyline, so why wouldn't he have access to the Gym? But imagine if he did find the way to exit Wallace/Juan's Gym & Wallace was standing there outside the Gym. But ironically was also blocked by a Waterfall spot
Ants strategy for this was extremely intelligent. Recognizing that because the order is messed up an effective strat is to catch whatever pokemon you can early from a diverse set of levels so that you can breeze through the gyms once you find them all was brilliant. That kind of situational awareness is something I think speedrunning really builds into someone. Knowing what strat to apply when and when to abandon a strat and try something else is a fundamental life skill in general. As the great Kenny Rogers put it, "You gotta' know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run."
This was one of those perfect randomizers from a watching entertainment factor. Everything was jumbled, sure, but most was accessible...right up until Drake. And it required one single piece of the puzzle in Goldeen that needed to be trained up. I love when a player has to think on their feet like that instead of finding a way around the weather issue or needing it fixed (rather unfortunate on Norman; no choice there).
Catching that level 40 Golbat in the beginning really helped you alot , he was still using a level 36 swampert halfway through the vid , MVP goes to that Golbat , and after you caught Rayquaza it was over, great video great hunch on Drake
The almost instant catching of lvl 40 pokemon was a the most clutch part of the run. Especially with both of them running on multiplied speed, having a lvl 40, whether it listens or not, greatly reduces the amount of white outs, obstacles, and overall stress so that Ant could calmly focus on mapping the world.
@@secaleohsrevlis2039 each gym increases the cap lvl where pokemon listens, his Golbat was 40 something so he had to beat the 3rd ot 4th gym for Pokemon lvl 40 and up to listen

For those interested from the catch calc for Lv70 Ray with 100 HP using a GB: You have a 0.416% chance of capturing it per ball. Thus, you have at least a 50% chance of catching it within 167 balls and at least a 95% chance of catching it within 719 balls.
thing was, it would have taken him like 2 seconds to white out there. Smant had a team of much stronger pokemon, which is why dying took so long. I think one of the things he learned from this is that you shouldn't get a beefy team before you have a reliable way of getting out of places without dying.
@@android19willpwn someone actually did the math and ant saved more time with the team since he was immediately able to fight the first couple gyms instead of how pointcrow did it.
I think what just makes finding Drake even sweeter is the fact that the room that the door initially goes to (if it wasn't randomized), leads to the only room in the entire game that you can catch Bagon, of which Drake is the dragon type elite four member and his ace happens to be Salamence. Amazing.

I do find it a bit funny how Crow psyched himself out with his own lies, and was lying almost the entire time, meanwhile Ant was just legitimately honest the entire time about what he was doing and Crow didn't believe him or realize how far behind he was until near the end.
This was absolutely incredible. The fact that Ant predicted Drake would be behind the Meteor Falls waterfall was nothing short of amazing. Also love how ingenious Ant was with getting through there without having access to the Waterfall HM!
Idk if the editor will see this but holy shit you did an amazing job combining the 2 streams together, I can only imagine how overwhelming that must have been to include all the important parts while also making sure to keep it in chronological order
I knew Ant would win the moment he started the challenge by catching high level pokemon instead of leveling up his starter, that was a big brain move. I'm also pretty sure he doesn't upload his defeats so that gave me a clue as well.
He has lost before and he's pretty humble about it when he's beaten no gloating or anything. I'm sure if you keep watching you'll find a video where he loses, I don't like spoiling things.

The most amazing thing about this is that he remembered that sealing learns waterfall by level up. I never would have thought of that (I have never used seaking in all my 20+ yrs of playing Pokémon).
Seaking is 1000% the most forgettable pokemon. Imagine being a pokemon whose signature move was turned into an HM, and still no one remembers. Imagine being available in every single main series game and still no one remembers. I feel so bad for seaking, but even that is not enough to help me remember.

Spending time throwing pokeballs at pokemon in Victory Road so early was such a great play. Instantly giving you the levels to sweep atleast the first 4-5 gyms.

I just started watching Ant’s content and I gotta say this dude has an encyclopedic knowledge of Pokémon. It’s crazy he knew how to bypass the waterfall glitch with Goldeen
Fun fact you needed 2 years later: waterfall used to be Goldeen/Seaking's signature move. In gen I, it had no use outside battle. Only in later gens would it be made an HM. They're still the only pokemon to naturally learn the move

While it's cool having the Elite 4 all in one place. Drake being in that one part of Meteor Falls (which is especially cool because it's the one place in the game you can catch Bagon) made me realize how cool it would also be for the player to have to hunt down the Elite 4 and find where they are. They could be in especially difficult places to find, leading to a greater emphasis on exploration.
Isn't this basically the organization of gen 6 or 7 idk which cause I played neither but I heard in one of them the equivalent of the E4 fucked off and you had to go find them or smth

When he tried it himself it took five hours to find the second gym, and after the hour of clearing five more gyms, another hour to complete state and Liza’s, and then a few more to complete gym 8. PointCrow may be good at Pokémon but he is bad at strategizing, and he went up against a person who does challenge runs for a living. The outcome was inevitable.

It's really funny switching back and forth between the two because of how different their teams are. Ant keeps sweeping all the early gyms with his level 40 Lairon and Golbat, while Crow's starter isn't even level 20.

To me, it was very clear that ant was fighting Zubats to white out, he even mentioned that one of his Pokemon has Roar so after PP in all other moves got depleted, Roar prolonged the soft lock even more. And I think he very clearly stated he lost X number of minutes to it.

Ants strategy for this was extremely intelligent. Recognizing that because the order is messed up an effective strat is to catch whatever pokemon you can early from a diverse set of levels so that you can breeze through the gyms once you find them all was brilliant.
That kind of situational awareness is something I think speedrunning really builds into someone. Knowing what strat to apply when and when to abandon a strat and try something else is a fundamental life skill in general.
As the great Kenny Rogers put it, "You gotta' know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run."
I think Crow had a similar strategy, but he couldn't afford pokeballs for a long time. Ant's big advantage was finding and selling that lax incense.

The Goldeen waterfall strat was genius
This was one of those perfect randomizers from a watching entertainment factor. Everything was jumbled, sure, but most was accessible...right up until Drake. And it required one single piece of the puzzle in Goldeen that needed to be trained up. I love when a player has to think on their feet like that instead of finding a way around the weather issue or needing it fixed (rather unfortunate on Norman; no choice there).
Going to victory road and catching high level mons almost immediately was a massive big brain move that saved a lot of time
yeah grinding mudkip was brainlet tier, even catching a lv 20 mon saves hours of grinding.

Catching that level 40 Golbat in the beginning really helped you alot , he was still using a level 36 swampert halfway through the vid , MVP goes to that Golbat , and after you caught Rayquaza it was over, great video great hunch on Drake
The almost instant catching of lvl 40 pokemon was a the most clutch part of the run. Especially with both of them running on multiplied speed, having a lvl 40, whether it listens or not, greatly reduces the amount of white outs, obstacles, and overall stress so that Ant could calmly focus on mapping the world.
Why wouldn't it listen? It wasn't traded to him.

I think one of the things he learned from this is that you shouldn't get a beefy team before you have a reliable way of getting out of places without dying.

I think what just makes finding Drake even sweeter is the fact that the room that the door initially goes to (if it wasn't randomized), leads to the only room in the entire game that you can catch Bagon, of which Drake is the dragon type elite four member and his ace happens to be Salamence. The most amazing thing about this is that he remembered that sealing learns waterfall by level up. I never would have thought of that (I have never used seaking in all my 20+ yrs of playing Pokémon).

Spending time throwing pokeballs at pokemon in Victory Road so early was such a great play.
Instantly giving you the levels to sweep atleast the first 4-5 gyms.
Then he caught Rayquaza between Gym's 4 and 5, giving him the levels to sweep the rest of them.
The only problem is Ant locking himself early so he had to fight level 20+ Zubat with Level 40 pokemon till fainting

I saw this today watched one video on it but can say I wouldn't want to be friends with someone who gets mad at people in the youtube comment section. They did the challenge 75% for youtube and 25% for the fun of doing it why let youtube ruin the fun you did have while playing the game.
