@@LucianDevine Not really that gutsy when he's going in to this race knowing he's at a skill deficit. If you know the other player is better than you, your best chance of winning is to rely on luck. It's not gutsy to go for the strategy that gives you the highest odds of winning.
@@cmonkey3698 It's a bit gutsy not taking a legendary when it's offered to you, even if it's just for 1 level. The fact that he ended up giving the rival a permanent Jirachi is also a bit unfortunate, lol.
Can we take a moment to appreciate SmallAnt's storytelling ability? I mean, c'mon. I could watch these videos over and over again and still be on the edge of my seat.
I love how for some reason in this kind of videos at some point the race becomes a contest of who can bluff harder.
One has to also remember that May had a Jirachi the entire time. Every time Ant fought her, he'd get a massive Experience boost from that alone.

Smants on-the-fly strategising is absolutely unreal. He's often not as honed at any of these games as other big speedrunners, but he is seriously the example of guile and speed of wit over raw experience with a game. It is untrue how, given an unknown version of the game, strategies he's never heard of, pokemon he's not sure about, he's able to make tactical decisions which are often even supposedly 'non-optimal' in a full-time speedrunner's eyes, to outpace his opponent. Something special about that mind.
I remember seeing his nomination for best speedrunner a while back, and this is exactly one of the reasons I thought he deserved top spot. Just as a really funny streamer/RUclipsr can make any game enjoyable to watch, Smallant can make any run enjoyable because he's incredibly creative and good at strategising on the spot. I think that's quite unique among most speedrunner videos, and it's always fascinating to watch how he pulls through each time.

Yeah, most speedrunners become good via brutal rote. Smallant is genuinely talented.
I love these as it shows how quick and crafty Ant is. Everytime he's behind he has a plan to get ahead in 2 seconds
It takes a special combination of humility and ballsiness to recognize that you can't win on an even playing field and go for the right gambles.
SmallAnt really just has big main character energy, a 10 minute drawback and still managed to keep up and win it with the luck of the gods, this man is just built different
Ant proves to us that being independant is a noble goal for us ants to pursue

For fighting against someone who was basically playing on New Game+, this was a scarily close race.
Chrism is one of my favourite content creators, I love how he does fun races with Shen but then also bridges the gap between creators like Simpleflips and Smallant. Truly a legend

I only caught the tail end of this race live (right as they started the E4). I had no idea how much luck Smant had to have saved up from the start of the run. That was crazy!

Haven't played pokemon in about 20 years but I still love watching these. It's amazing to see how the game play has changed over the years
Hell back in the day, moves and mechanics didn't matter. It was all about hitting level 100 and overpowering everything. The skill these guys show is incredible.

Smallant finding a win a speedrunning race against somebody who literally found the optimal strategy to beating the game is like that one comic where the Flash figured out how to outrun somebody who could insta-teleport. Smallant is the Undisputed King of Speedrunning

A fun fact about Deino and his evolutionary chain is that the names are based on the german words for one, two, and three (eins, zwei, drei, respectively). It was like an extremely close one, where the last goal was to get to an end city, and while Smant made it to the end first, the other player found a city before Smant did, and won
Edit: Found the video, titled "I challenged Minecraft's Best Speedrunner to a test of skill" posted in February - wasn't a black out bingo like I thought, but was a lockout challenge with 13 objectives
360chrism has been a favorite of mine for a while now, ngl I’ve just recently gotten into SmallAnt’s content but I’m thrilled he’s working with smaller creators. awesome race and wild ending! would love to see more stuff like this.
