      Thank you so much! I'm actually a fan of all-ages and children's works when done really well, in prose, comics, and animation. Some stuff 'purely' for kids can be brain numbing, but when something is sharp and clever and generous like these books are, it's as good as anything else!

      Thank you! Re: the Barks volumes, if you try to get the 2-volume slipcased, box sets, those seem to go out of print very quick, but I've always been able to find the standalone volumes at decent prices so far. But then again I usually preorder them (they come out two a year and are planned for over a dozen years). Fantagraphics has seen a lot of success with these, just like with the complete Peanuts sets, so I think you can still find most of them within that 30 dollar mark, even here in India!

    Is it Calvin nd Hobbes in the bottom shelf on your left?🤔
    Is the omnibus worth buying?
    I am highly skeptical as I think it wont have the same impact as reading one strip at a time.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  6 лет назад +3

      Yes, that's he complete Calvin and Hobbes paperback edition, which is four volumes (the hardcover was three, obviously thicker, volumes). Each volume is the same size as one of those collections like 'The Days are Just Packed', just thicker, so they preserve the reading of the strips quite well. What I love most is not just the fact that it is complete - so not just the quotable quotes but the quiet, philosophical ones as well - but also that it is chronological. There's a real pleasure in going from spring to summer through Halloween, and Christmas and back around with Calvin.

      @@ftloc Would it be boring to read the strips in one strech?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  6 лет назад +1

      I certainly don't think there's any way Calvin and Hobbes can be boring for me. In fact, you may mine unexpected richness when you see them flow from one to another. And like many daily strips, there are continuing 'storylines' often, related and linked episodes that are a real treat to read in sequence.

    For ages 4-10, I would have mentioned: _The Smurfs,_ and _Asterix & Obelix_ ( with honorable mentions to any of the following classics from the franco-belgian school, available via cinebook: _Billy & Buddy,_ _Spirou & Fantasio,_ _Marsupilami,_ _Gomer Goof,_ and _Lucky Luke_ ).

    Thanks for making this video! This is a domain of our beloved hobby that I am not familiar enough with. And I am an educator who works with elementary grade kids! I am always at lost when trying to suggest reading materials to kids or they parents. Most modern comics are way too violent for younger readers. Aside from the vintage stuff (John Stanley's work, Carl Barks's work, and other Dell Comics classics), I don't know enough. One series I like very much for young readers, but I don't know if it was ever translated from it's original french to english is an anthropomorphic series called ARIOL, by Emmanuel Guibert and Marc Boutavant, about a typical suburb boy donkey and his friends who live a normal everyday life, go to school, have normal schoolboy troubles and adventures. I highly recommend it. And I agree with you 100%, Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge is the bst thing that ever came out of any Disney comics.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  6 лет назад +1

      Rangersly That’s great that you get to work with students! I recommend checking out the lists of publishers First Second (great all ages lists, and many divided by age group, from what I remember of their Web site) and Scholastic., who are putting out some stellar books. There’s a lot out there, and of course, I hope this video helped a bit! 🙂

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  6 лет назад

      Oh, and I haven't seen ARIOL around - did you say 'typical suburb boy donkey'? There's a fair number of Guibert translations available though, coincidentally (!) many by First Second. I have a bunch of his 'Sardine in Space' volumes for kids, but also his books for older readers (like The Professor's Daughter with Joann Sfar and Alan's War. Doesn't he also have a number of collaborations with Lewis Trondheim? I see Guibert, Sfar and Trondheim named together quite often, it seems to me, but maybe it's mainly the Sardine in Space series?

    • @Rangersly
      @Rangersly 6 лет назад +1

      @@ftloc I am not surprised, Emmanuel Guibert is one of the best writers in french language comics. As for Ariol, it was even made into an animated cartoon. Here's a link to one of my favorite episode (it is in french, but you'll get the idea how the characters look like) :

    Love your channel. Reading Pluto because of you.
    My 6-y-o reads and sees Tintin books incessantly without completely understanding the complexities of the plot. E.g., she doesn't understand why anyone would kidnap anybody, why someone is stealing or why someone is getting angry. She is obsessed though. Is 6 a good age for Tintin?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  3 года назад +1

      Thank you so much! As for your daughter, yes, I think it's completely fine to read things one doesn't completely 'get' yet, as long as you enjoy it and the 'difficulty' doesn't turn you off reading.
      In fact I think that is where a lot of learning can happen. So maybe Tintin will be the place where your daughter learns about (or at least gets introduced to) concepts like kidnapping and rescue, crime and law, heroism and friendship, etc. That is definitely the way it worked for me and I strongly recommend more 'aspirational' reading practices (read above your 'level' as long as you enjoy it!) to foster the love of exploration that is such a part of it! 😁

    Another amazing selection! But I'm surprised Tintin didn't come as a mention in this video! Is there any specific reason for that?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 года назад +1

      That's a very good question! I thought long and hard on it and decided that I would choose all these books before Tintin to give to young kids today. It's not that I think Tintin is unsuitable for kids, but there would need to be some caveats and explaining I would do with Tintin for a kid, whereas all the books here would need no disclaimers or contextualization at all.
      If I was making a Top 20 I think Tintin would definitely feature in there, but for a Top 5 I really focused on works that you don't need to make even the slightest excuses for, if that makes sense?

    • @DiptarupGhoshDastidar
      @DiptarupGhoshDastidar 4 года назад

      @@ftloc okay yes! That's almost what I was guessing! I was thinking of certain racial representations and the use of certain characters and locations that would need a little more historical context to make complete sense! So yes I would probably have to select specific Tintin titles for kids instead of giving the whole set all at once!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 года назад +1

      @@DiptarupGhoshDastidar Yes, exactly. A more curated and annotated approach, perhaps, which makes it a series still good for kids, but not better than the ones that top this list! 😁

    Why don't you include Captain Underpants and Dog Man Series comics ?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 лет назад +1

      Mainly because I haven't read much of them - I've seen some books from each series and I know a couple of kids who love them, and they seem charming. But they haven't impressed me at the level these comics listed here have. I know that kids will probably have different standards, but for this list, I was also thinking of comics I think are an excellent use/ expansion of the comics form, and comics I could see setting high expectations from the medium later on in life, if that makes sense.

      I'll have to take a look; thank you for the recommendation! I don't have children myself, but good comics are good comics, and I really appreciate the best of 'younger reader' work being able to do and achieve things that are quite difficult. Cheers!

      Thanks. I was also curious about the comic panels shown in your opening sequence. I recognize about 1/3. Can you maybe list them in order?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 года назад

      In order of appearance they are from: Zot! by Scott McCloud; George Sprott by Seth; a pin-up by Richard Sala; Acme Novelty Library/ Rusty Brown by Chris Ware; Black Hole by Charles Burns; Watchmen by Dave Gibbons (and Alan Moore); Batman Year One by David Mazzuchelli (and Frank Miller); The Lincoln County War by Rick Geary; Love and Rockets by Jaime Hernandez (this story); American Splendor (art here by Robert Crumb, written by Harvey Pekar); Age of Reptiles by Ricardo Delgado; Polina by Bastien Vives; Bone by Jeff Smith; Hilda by Luke Pearson; I Killed Adolf Hitler by Jason; Castle Waiting by Linda Medley; Mouse Guard by David Petersen; Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley; Mind MGMT by Matt Kindt; and Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai.
      I've been able to cover several of these works or creators on this channel, but several more remain!

    Which edition of Donald duck to get there is slipcase but I cannot find anywhere

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 года назад +2

      Unfortunately, most of the slipcases seem to be out of print, or at least unavailable here in India. The hardcovers inside them, for the most, still seem to be available though - just search for 'Don Rosa Library' or 'Carl Barks' and 'Fantagraphics' and you should see the, Order doesn't really matter since they are mainly short stories, with a few notable exceptions (like the 12 issue Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa). I hope this helps a bit!

    OWLY!!!! UNCA SCROOGE!!! Especially Rosa's Life & Times. Haven't read Zita or Hilda: HAVE added to my 'find' list. Bone--'beloved and now classic!' Which is when the prunes kicked in--! Mouse Guard! Hmmm...haven't read Anya's Ghost, Little Lit OR Ghosts; will look for'm. Amulet indeed seems like a [glorious] mishmash--didn't impress me enough to read further.
    But hey: I also like and recommend...GON (a little, very fierce T-Rex [another 'silent' comic]), Amelia Rules (pre-teen's life in a new neighborhood after divorce), Phoebe and Her Unicorn (a remarkably drably titled series of remarkably warm and funny and happily illustrated relationships of a pre-teen, her parents (very cool parents) and "her" unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils). I also VERY much like Clan Apis, a graphics novel about bees...from a worker-bee's point of view, not at all 'above or beyond' a youngster's appreciation. [NB: Stan Sakai contributed to one of the monthly-issue's covers]. We both know there're more, but these are those I thought of, watching your most recent very fine video!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the excellent sounding suggestions! The only one I know is Clan Apis, which I consider superlative. I’ll have to check the others out, are they relatively easy to find, do you know?

    • @WalkingManComics
      @WalkingManComics 6 лет назад +1

      Well sure they're easy to find: Gon is on the tall bookcase near the couch, Amelia and Phoebe are in the smaller bookcase across the room, and...oh.... well: they're all in 'graphics novel/collected' form and I'd think readily available anywhere you might find Bone. But then, we're an ocean (or two?) apart, so I might well be wrong. But still--Phoebe and Amelia are pretty well known in the US (I think--) and Gon is Japanese, so if it's here in the US, I'd expect it to be available world-wide. Just did a quick search via Amazon and all three are listed...good luck!

      Excellent, thank you. And I know you were joking, but I seriously think I could find some books more easily on Amazon than on my shelves...

      In my list videos, i generally leave out books that i have talked about before in detail, particularly my all time favorites. That way I get to talk about more comics instead of repeating myself. So Bone is definitely a 'super honorable mention' because I have half a dozen videos on that one series alone! 😁
