This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in electric SUV. The Wrangler 4xe has 35km / 49 miles of EV range which is not a lot. We used most of it quite quickly so it’s important to plug-in often to see the savings at the pump. The Rubicon 4xe earns a combined city/highway rating of 4.8L/100km, 49 MPG. With the battery depleted it gets a combined city/highway rating of 11.7L/100km, 20 MPG.
The Rubicon diesel gets 10.2L/100 km, 23 MPG combined which is better fuel economy than this PHEV when the EV range is depleted. The 4Xe comes with a 2L turbocharged engine and two electric motors matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. There are three driving modes, Hybrid, Electric and Esave. Hybrid is the best of both worlds and the default mode, which combines torque from the engine and the electric motors giving it maximum horsepower, instant torque and the best acceleration. Electric mode uses battery power only and Esave mode saves the battery charge for later use. Maybe you plan to hit a trail and want near-silent exploring but still want maximum horsepower and torque.The Wrangler’s 4xe 400-volt, 17 kWh battery pack sits under the second row seat to protect it from outside elements and to preserve the interior space. The battery can be charged in 2 hours using a level II charger (240 volt) or 12 hours using the included Level I charger (120 volt).The Unlimited Sahara starts at $54,995 CAD/$47,995 USD. Sahara High Altitude, $59,990 CAD (not available in the US). Unlimited Rubicon $59,995 CAD /$51,695 USD
and the High Altitude trim which is only available in the US for $53,815 USD.
Our Rubicon 4xe test model comes in at $74,340 CAD.

The Rubicon comes standard with cloth seats, but we have leather-faced seats with the Rubicon logo, a leather shifter and parking brake for $1,095 CAD. The Cold Weather Package will get you the heated steering wheel, heated front seats and remote start system for just under $1,000 CAD. You also have to pay extra for blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, rear park assist and forward collision warning. One thing you can do in the 4xE but you can't in the diesel is creep around silently at low speeds. This is great for nature photography or whatever you wanna do out in the wild without being noisy!

Bought one of these a few months ago, best Jeep I've ever owned. Don't have to worry about that ridiculous noise that a diesel makes and the range is fantastic. In 2 months I've driven 2,000 mi and only on my third tank of gas. It's definitely better and more capable than my 2013 Wrangler was and definitely a lot more powerful.

So, it's nearly 700miles(not kilometers) from a tank of diesel.....? If that's correct, that's some pretty decent mileage....
Does this have to be plugged in, in order for the battery to charge? I live in an apartment complex and do not have EV charging available.
@@VictoriaG02 no, it can be charged by driving it. However it takes quite a while to recharge that way. I have a level two charger at home and it takes two hours to charge. You can also charge it by driving it for 2 hours but you're using gasoline doing that. It does get excellent gas mileage just running the gas engine, but I'm not sure living in an apartment with no way to charge it is all that efficient. It can also be charged with a level one charger but that takes 10 hours or so but only needs a regular AC outlet.

I got the 2018 2.0 turbo. Its got 37000 miles now and I been 4x4ing 2-3 times a week. Even with the 37 inch tires it still gets 20MPG on average. I have had no problems so far. It is so good in all 4x4 situations, its like a dream. hehe
20 mpg is NOTHING special. My 1990 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 6 got 15-19 mpg and it wasn't a hybrid. I wouldn't want to drop a whopping $60K on this thing. I would have to drive it for years and years to get any savings out of it on fuel alone.
We have a Sahara 4XE and love it. Faster and more efficient than our 18 Compass Trailhawk. Great vehicle.

Like you said, it’s more advantageous to those who have short daily commutes. Those with long daily demands come out ahead with the EcoDiesel.

Good video. 1. Thank God you explained the smog vs CO2 thing, a lot of people are clueless on that one. 2. Do you really think a FCA diesel will run to 300k without issues ? 3. 40km on e alone is quite good and would cover many peoples daily driving. Most long distance commuters don't get a wrangler anyway. 4. A diesel needs at least 2-3 km of driving before its warmed up and efficient. 5. You can plug into a 120v. Very slow charging but you have sleep and not everyone drives every day. And if you are really lucky you can plug in at work. 6. Hydro is cheaper than diesel.
FCA diesel would worry me even more than FCA hybrid.
This is my wife’s favorite vehicle because it reminds her of the G Wagon! Here in Quebec it receives the ev grants so on a lease for a fully loaded wrangler it was $615 tax included per month which is a fantastic deal. I drive a Tesla and love the ev experience and we are all set up at home… the problem is it is to high and won’t clear the garage door height because of the one touch soft top… so for now we are keeping her X5 until I could convince her to let me buy her a Tesla Y 😊

Update!!! So we are ordering the 4xe Sahara! With a slight modification to our garage door we are able to fit it in the garage! This will be a fun new addition to our household and will be leasing so at the end we can always get something different… the EV landscape will be very different in 4 years! As I mentioned in my previous post I drive a Tesla and I just recently bought a fun little summer toy a 2006 Mazda MX5 (NC) 6 speed manual to zoom zoom around in. Living our best life between electrification and back to basics visceral driving experience… I feel the 4xe will be fantastic as a family hauler and winter tank! Plus we have 16 year old twins with their learners permit and the 4xe will be a great vehicle to learn on and due to larger tires and rubber plumbers less wear and tear from curb rash and failed parallel parking attempts! Would love to see you guys do a classic Miata NC review and a Sahara 4xe! If you are ever back in Montreal you can borrow ours! Cheers.

Hi .. interesting review. TY .. I actually own a 4Xe .. so let’s cover some of the topics you’ve mentioned.
Diesel vs PHEV .. in the states, most are not cross shopping these two models. It’s a very different buyer. Additionally diesel in the states is almost always more expensive than super or high test. Plays into overall costs. As for mileage, you have three very distinct choices for how you drive it. Hybrid, Electric, or e-Save. Plus you can use brake RE-gen, where you can recharge the battery while in motion. Very cool. Depending on how you drive, I’m averaging 25 mpg + and that’s a hell of a lot better than my JK from 17’. I get a solid 30 miles on pure electric, or in Hybrid.
Leasing is much more attractive in the USA than purchasing, two reasons, the $7500 tax credit which saves roughly $208.00 per month for a 36 month lease, and finally it allows you to get to become accustomed to the semi electric ⚡️ world in baby steps, without going full electric. I’ve dipped my toe in and so far I’m good. Also, 99.9% of people are not keeping any electric car 10 years. Technology is changing so fast is the main reason people don’t keep daily transportation vehicles. Even collectibles are a huge problem in the future, gas or EV. Many manufacturers even after market are only going back 10 years or less now for replacement parts. Not good ..
Finally, it’s an extremely well executed product, both in fit and finish and performance. I actually have had some folks scratch their head when I pull away from them and can’t understand how it happened 😂👍 Mine is the High Altitude and it’s awesome looking. Ask the guy in his G63, the exact me color and trim as mine and he couldn’t stop looking or believe how mine looked compared to his G. Btw, we pulled off the light and had some fun too. Respect … for sure. FYI, I’ve owned G too, so I’m quite capable to make the comparison.
If you are interested to tip your toe in the EV world, and condition yourself for a true EV than this is a great way to start. JMO ..
PS, the High Altitude comes with the Dana axles the same as the Rubicon. Also, full maintenance for two years included. I can drive in the HOV lane too ..

Just bought a 4xe and it's perfect for our daily commute
We never use the gas engine
Since our commute is about two miles to work. We do have solar panels and our daily electric cost is about .20 cents. Far cry from what a regular gas or diesel engine would cost to fuel up on a monthly basis. If your commute is short then this is perfect , but if your hitting the freeway and travel more than 75 miles on the day might not make sense. We love it.

That battery has a 10yr 100k warranty. Also, utilizing it reduces the wear and tear on the i4 gas engine.
Do you know why it’s a 10 year fucckin warranty? Because batteries in electric vehicles last exactly 10 years then start needing replacing.. for cheaper electric vehicles than this - replacing batteries is 14k...

Placed my order for my 4xe Rubicon JLUR. Leasing for 27 months, $7500 credit so I'm using that as my down payment. I'm going to have a lower payment on this $63,000 Jeep then on my current 2019 Sahara on a 36 month lease which Im trading in early and they are still paying off the entire vehicle to put me in the 4xe that's far nicer. Can't wait until it comes in. I'm in the USA, New England and looking forward to plugging in.
My wife and I are about to test the 4xe and EcoDiesel for a very long term test lol
She just traded in her Kia Sorrento for a 2021 Jeep Rubicon 4xe and I just traded in my RAM Power Wagon for a 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon with the EcoDiesel.
Time will tell what will last the longest and what's most reliable. Engine wise...I'm going with the diesel.

Also folks - in support of the 4XE - it does 240km offroad in low range and that is because the starting current on the motor is low due to the low range gearing. What that boils down to is when taking small loads from a battery it will last longer between charges. In the street high range the starting current drawn from the battery is higher simply because the gearing is higher hence the 40km range. This vehicle would be a hotter seller if they got that street range up to about 80km.
Diesel has a great story behind it for longevity, BUT don't forget that if you use it for short trips in town most of the time, you're going to clog up the smog filter in the pipes and that will need replacement at thousands of dollars for each replacement. You have to really step on it on the highway like once a week or something to clear that filter.

Where the 4xe makes sense is if you have a lot of short commutes. We have a 4xe Rubicon and we bought it 3.5 weeks ago and are still on the first tank of gas after the first 700 miles. We are averaging 31mpg with a mix of 70/30 city/hwy. After negotiating about 10% off MSRP and factoring in state and federal tax credits my 4xe is roughly $43K. I just don’t buy the argument that the diesel is a better deal.

Diesel its great for highway but winter and short trips kill fuel economy , Also Diesel engines are very expensive to repair . Plug in all the way if they could increase EV range to 70-80 km

I think the 4xe is the way to go. You can still tow up to 3500 lbs with it. Also Diesel fuel is much more per litre than regular fuel.

I never listen to people who claim the low fuel consumption helps pay for the higher cost of diesel. There's a reason why just about nobody drives a diesel CAR. The only diesels I see are all work trucks and construction vehicles. When regular unleaded fuel hits $3.50 a gallon, diesel is a whopping $4.45 or more. The higher fuel economy doesn't factor out. At best, you're only saving a few bucks over the gasoline vehicle. I urge people to NOT buy a diesel. It's too difficult to find fuel and the prices will really drain your wallet.

There’s several on the lots here in Illinois. I don’t think people looking at EV’s want a hybrid. For the cost of this thing one can buy a Rivian.

For that battery question does it have liquid cooling or is like Nissan leaf with passive cooling. If has liquid cooling than it should last 20 years I'm guessing cause we still don't have enough info on the battery since Tesla battery still new but it looks like it can last 20 years before battery degreation. If it is passive cooling that 8 years. There more factors to this aswell battery don't like heat if u live hot climate that reduces life of the battery and if u fast charge your battery or u let battery go to zero charge.

Regen works great , after over 4000km my brakes still look new, when you get back for a drive you can actually touch the rotor and they are stone cold because regen is that good.

I really, really, really came "that" close to a deal for one of these. Quebec's incentives are really good for the 4XE. But hey, it's FCA, you'll have trouble with the first year of production or so. I went for the 3.6L in the end. But for my next Jeep, when this will be proven and probably updated, that's a no brainer. Very compelling proposition by Stellantis.
Now, the diesel is very attractive too. But 9000 $CAN for that engine is a s*** ton of money. I don't know if it's worth it. But then again, if that little engine that could makes you smile for 10 years, that's another no brainer.

I do agree with you about the diesel engine, it is very pricey. This is less than a diesel! The engine you chose is a great one.
When the government buys a car for you, it makes sense but when it's your own money it doesn't. There is a whole lot wrong with the situation... Not a fan of subsidies.
The 4XE's have 3 cooling systems. What can possibly go wrong?
So a bit of an issue on the charge topic you brought up. If you were to plug that Wrangler in over night in 120 outlet, it will fill most the battery back up in 9 hrs. If you want faster than that, then yes you have to have the 240 hookup. I had a Volt if you're a around town driver, a PHEV will work, plus if you're going long distance every now and then you're covered. As far long term ownership goes, yes diesel get better economy and will last half a million miles. There was a 2012 Volt named Sparky that had 425k miles on it prior to needing a costly overhaul. A Canadian company did pick it up and repair it. I think you're selling the long term ownership costs short. Diesel can be more expensive to purchase depending on where you live, and maintenance costs on a diesel when necessary are more expensive than gas. As governments move to eliminate gas and diesel engines you will see the cost of fuel rise. Take that into long term ownership.
This vehicle makes more sense in the US since we get a 7,500 tax credit on it. You get a lot of equipment that is optional on a gas Rubicon as standard equipment on a 4xe Rubicon. Once the tax credit is taken into account you are close to the same price, but have the upgraded lighting group, upgraded uConnect, a Alpine stereo system and a few other expensive options for about the same price. After tax credit out '22 4xe Rubicon was $55,500 ($63k - $7500). That's still pretty steep considering my 2011 Ram 2500 Big Horn CC 4x4 Cummins was $42k new including taxes, tags and title.
I don’t see a lot of half a million mile eco diesel dodge trucks driving around. Very confident statement there.
I agree with Zack, I would go diesel. It's the engine that makes more sense in this type of vehicle.

Good morning Zack & Andrea. Great video, as always 😉, and what a great conversation regarding PHEV vs Diesel you guys brought forward. A lot of pros and cons but like Andrea mentioned, you have to consider your lifestyle and what is you intent to do with the vehicle.
Me personally, I would go 392 if I could put my hands on one of the current LottoMax prizes 😂😂😂.
Jokes aside, I think we start to see a shift towards electrification, and it’s a good thing. For example the Ford F-150 Lightning, GM has also something in the works etc. All good things I’d say and it gives the consumers better choices IMO.

Any negatives to buying this used at $40k with 22k miles?
How long does it take to charge this single motor? If it doesn't take that long then there's no need for fast charging. But since the global trend is going full electric in the future, lets hope the fast charging feature becomes standard otherwise no one without a garage at home to charge it won't even consider an EV when car shopping.
These are pretty bad ass, I had one as a rental in Northern CA (The Willy Addition) and I beat the crap out of it off-road and it did amazing, I mean I pushed it to it's max and it killed it, the only thing about these is cheap interior, lack of storage and for 99% of people there is no need for locking differentials. They drive amazing off-road and on road, I was not a Jeep fan but I was thoroughly impressed and the funny side, they will smoke a Ford Raptor, the factory 0-60 is way off.

7:30 mine only has 70kms on it, and yes I got it for off-roading. It's a 4x4 .... why else would you buy one for?
I've upgraded the lift to an AEV dual sport 2.5" (more like 3 1/4") Funny how the male host says we wouldn't go off roading in this Jeep, my 2022 Rubi I had it for 48 hours right from the factory went off roading in british columbia mountain service roads. Love my Jeep.

This in for the off-pavement experience of the Whole Foods shopper who occasionally puts the rear right wheel on the curb while parallel parking and leaves it like that.
I'm not sure the added weight and complexity is not worth saving one gallon of gas a day. On top of that now our new Wrangler is locked out of electric AND HYBRID mode because its not available at this time. I've read some jeeps get locked in FORM but ours didn't. We have owned the Jeep for two weeks and charge almost every night. WE drive three miles to work and then 3 miles home in electric. At the end of that we have 38 percent battery left. We have done this for two weeks in 30 degree average temps while always in hybrid mode. WE have also done some errands at night before we charge and have 240 miles on the Wrangler. In that time we used about 1/5 of a tank of gas and the engine has been on in many situations. Now after two weeks all electric assist is turned off and not available and I mean all. The engine doesn't even shut off on decel or standing still. I can understand a system that prevent dry engine and months old gas from happening. But my gas is fresh and the engine has been on many times over the past two weeks. My insurance on the thing is much more expensive compared to our Durango. I pay 380 a month with 2000 down The down payment was trade equity. It is a cheaper way to lease a jeep and it is a nice vehicle but it is not an efficient electrical vehicle. If I get my next electric bills and it is 40 dollars higher or more Ill never plug this thing again as there will no real money savings. The Form did go off in about 20 miles and I have some suggestions. If you do many short electric trips make sure you push the electric only button. Even in the cold you do not want the Gas engine turning on for short periods without fully warming up. So In my case with a daily 6 mile commute make sure to push electric button and keep the engine from turning on. If the engine turns on and doesn't warm up the unburnt gas can dilute the engine and the Form system turns on the prevent that. Our battery does deplete very fast in the Winter. I hope the Summer brings more electric range.
Another great review. Given the price and longevity, diesel all the way. Toyota's hybrid battery is able to last 700000+km before replacing it at about around $6-7k. That's with the popularity and reliability of Toyota's hybrid. Given FCA's iffy reliability record, I am not sure whether Jeep's system has the proven reliability of any Toyota.

@@Motormouth... time won’t tell.. electric vehicles need batteries replaced after 10 years. That’s over 14k for cheap vehicles. A battery replacement on this can easily exceed 25k.. that’s why they offer a 10yr battery warranty. They know exactly how to play the game. In europe however they forcing us into this trash - because we pay 2k a year on road tax on diesel and petrol on big cars. Expect inflated road tax to come to USA soon also - with their green bullshit so they can sell this.
The ecodiesel does not have the durability of the typical North American diesels and EPA emissions equipment has even reduced the durability of those engines.

Having a battery inside the passenger compartment gives me pause, like what happens if you get crashed into on the right side? I don't like the idea of a battery fire starting or the thing even heating up under load when it gets older. I know it's not just Jeep trying this design out lately it seems to be a trend but I'd prefer the electrics on the other side of a firewall to add to my chance to evacuate a vehicle fire.

I always wanted one for years. Then when I was in Louisiana with work, they rented me one to go back to the Houston Airport. It was the 2.0 turbo which I found lacking power, the worst part was the handling on the highway. I thought it was terrible, it wandered all over the road and my back was killing me when I got to the airport. I was extremely disappointed in it 🤷♂️🤷♂️, the pricing is just ridiculous for these now just like most other new vehicles. I will keep my money in the bank 🏦 and drive around my older cars with low mileage. Great review as always guys 👍👍👍👍👍
Sounds about right. A 2liter shouldn't be in a jeep, even a turbo. The prices of new cars needs the overhaul - they are getting absolutely crazy. My97 TJ still works....and yes it's underpowered with a 2.4 engine ....lol
People don't talk about DEF refill every 2,500 miles and the more expensive oil changes. In some areas diesel is more expensive than gas.

It really depends on your lifestyle. You can see a lot of benefits with a PHEV if you do short daily trips and are committed to plugging in.
The HP and torque plus the hybrid features make the 4xe my choice, for sure. Exactly what I want in a Jeep.
The eco diesel engine weighs 505 lbs dry which makes the Wrangler even more front heavy. The 4xe is heavier, but the bulk of that added weight is further back which actually helps with weight distribution.
I love my 4xe but... living in Canada below -10 2-3 months of the year FYI.. battery will not work. Message says "electric not available at this time". Doesn't bother me too much but figured i would share.

When I lived in BC, I remembered a TON of encouragement from the power generation company for people to use LESS electricity. That was BEFORE smart phones, tablets, laptops and EVs. I don't know where all that extra electricity is coming from now. Will they need to build a dirty power plant soon because of all this demand?
Look up the new Site C dam that is being built, enough power for many decades to come.
Why use less power? BC has no problem generating it and you end up using less energy in total because batteries are 3x more efficient than diesel engines. Burning gasoline to power a generator is actually more efficient than just putting that gas in a car.
I love these, but live in the city with lots of traffic. I have been in a bad car accident so always look at crash tests. The Wrangler is one of the worst preforming on crash tests.

Right, it depends on who’s manufacturing the engine as to how long it lasts.
Do you know why it’s a 10 year fucckin warranty? Because batteries in electric vehicles last exactly 10 years then start needing replacing.. for cheaper electric vehicles than this - replacing batteries is 14k... replacing these batteries on this car... probably 30k.
