Skip to 11:52 for the direct photo comparisons. You’ll jump over a cranky rant and the explanation of what Pixel Binning is. Link to the 4K Patreon post www.patreon.com/posts/79374219 As to my snark in this video, if you’re someone who likes Samsung, but doesn’t define their whole personality by what phone they own, I hope you can have a chuckle over my frustrations analyzing Samsung’s silly marketing. For the Samsung Knights who always get so “pearl clutchingly” offended by my tone, Samsung isn’t getting the job done. Galaxy S sales are still down over 40% from the Galaxy S10. Samsung’s average phone selling price is LESS than HALF of Apple’s average selling price, and they’re losing premium tier sales ground IN SOUTH KOREA. Samsung’s semiconductor business is losing significant clients like AMD and Qualcomm. They continue to spend the most in advertising their brand, and they continue to make the boldest claims about their products. Their organization runs rampant with government corruption, and is directly combating Right to Repair initiatives in the USA. All while generationally, there’s ZERO interest in shopping premium Android phones for folks under the age of 30. Premium Android is dying. Samsung’s success in being the “default” Android option in North America is slowly killing premium Android, as Samsung copies Apple’s business moves more aggressively. Pretending that “this is fine” is bad for our hobby. I’m going to lose this fight. Enthusiast level phones will increasingly become niche and difficult to source. I’m definitely making less money by being this contrarian. I’m NOT going to pretend that this path is the way we should go. If you can look at all that data, the marketing of multi-billion dollar corporations, and decline in premium Android sales, and the MAIN thing you’re upset about is my “meany tone” on a small RUclips channel, then you are what’s wrong with gadget “enthusiasm”. You are a brand fan, not a tech fan. I’d prefer you watch other channels that will make you feel good about your favorite brand. We’ll both be happier.
Waiting for your review on Xiaomi 13 pro, to choose over OnePlus 11 if that's what you recommend... Because in India, OnePlus is equivalent to 729USD and X13pro 820USD. For comparison S23Ultra is 1375USD, 14proMax 1765USD. All prices are after the best discounts we could get and including 18% tax for 256GB variant And, this low pricing of Chinese manufacturers confuse me, as the Chinese version itself is slightly costlier than the Indian price including tax. The confusion is that whether the Indian Variants are actually the Global variants (same quality but without the official IP rating) or Indian variant is actually an inferior variant with the same name. Because no company bothers to come out and even say that Indian variant is actually manufactured to IP6X of the actual global counterpart but without official certification to reduce cost

Thank you! High MP counts are ridiculous and, honestly, useless. I bought it, among other things, for the 10x camera. I own an S21 Ultra and I just love taking zoomed in photos and videos... Recording concerts with it is just awesome! Now, I really do wish Samsung would focus more on sensor size and post-processing (which are the two things that ACTUALLY make a difference) instead of this ridiculous MP count nonsense. My dream would be to have one single 1" sensor with real 12MP and Sony's variable optical zoom from .6x to 10x. This would be just fantastic!
You mentioned the productivity factor and the Dex feature, it’s mainly why I’m possibly getting this phone, especially for my work environment. However, in the back of my mind, I was looking forward to playing with the raw images and how I’m going to edit them before posting and sharing them. Now, I have to wait and think about it a little longer :D Anyway, this video was really enlightening and I am glad you made it. Please, keep at it.

That is why I still highly rate the Nokia/Microsoft's PureView technique, especially during the Windows Phone days. The photo quality of the 808 and the Lumia 1020 can still rival modern smartphones, including Sony.
Juan deserves a billion views for this video alone. Scamsung is running amok with their marketing again. Didn't they learn this before? 16 MP from the Galaxy S5 to 12 MP on the Galaxy S7, yet the S7 has much better camera results due to bigger pixels. I said it before and I'll say it again: bigger sensors not more resolution.
I upgraded from the S23U from the S22U. To be quite frank, it's definitely not because of the cameras. I already thought the S22U camera is good enough that I didn't think they can top it. And turns out on both phones, I use the zoom (3x, 10x) lens way more than the main lens, which are exactly the same in terms of hardware. Thus any improvements we see probably could've been done with software if they were also to retain the existing 108MP lens they've been using. So why did I upgrade then? Because the S22U battery life is bad enough I simply couldn't accept it for a 5000mAh phone. Go TSMC and their 8G2.
I purchased the S22U for $400 10 days before the S23U release. I knew about the upgrades with the 8Gen2 processor, but I thought I would be happy enough, given the savings. After heating up during a split session between RUclips and WhatsApp, the phone was returned. The 8Gen2 is SOOOOO much better than people realize. Is it enough to upgrade? Not for most people, especially if one doesn't even see the difference. But I do, and it was within seconds of opening my first app (the Play Store) for the first time. I don't suggest most people to do this, because I am a part of the minority. However, I would not suggest anyone to get the S22U over the S23U unless you are saving more than $500. I'm also QUITE tickled that refuse to call it the S23U, but the Note 23. That choice of branding still doesn't make sense to me. Samsung should've simply changed the note release date to line up with the S series.
@@aarsyl In my case, I never really wanted the S22U in the first place. I had a S10e prior to that, loved that little thing. When the S22 series was launched, I did consider that as a replacement, but decided against it, overall it didn't make sense to me, and kept on using the S10e for another year. Until earlier in January, 3 days before I went on a week long vacation, my S10e completely died. I decided to pick up a used S22U available local to me. The cameras were great for all my holiday pics. I thought I wanted to keep it, but the battery is a huge let down, can't even get more than half a day on normal use. Used the phone for more or less a month. What cemented my decision to ditch the S22U, a good friend of mine got a Xiaomi Mi 12T Pro with the 8+G1 and out of the box it destroys my S22U battery. It wasn't the most financially viable decision since trade in values for my country isn't exactly the best, I did lose some money handing in the S22U, but I'm so glad with how the S23U turned out. Especially the better power efficiency, better thermals.
The lens optics are very likely all updated from S22U to S23U. They are all on better stabilisers as well. This makes a proper difference especially for the periscope.
@Germaine Liew was trying to explain this to someone and they thought I was crazy... you just don't take basic pics anymore when you have so many lenses. 2-3x zoom is standard, 10x works really well so we're testing boundaries here lol The 1x is just something we scarcely need now...
Not surprised. Their 1/1.3" 108MP sensor from the last two years could... COULD... give you a smidge more detail in things that you really ought to be shooting with the telephoto instead, but really didn't feel as special in terms of optical quality as bigger 1/1.1" to 1/1.28" sensors. With software sharpening and interpolation from the extra pixel depth, you can cover gaps, but it's better if the detail is baked into the image in the first place. I shoot a lot of product photography on my phones, so I'm one of those edge cases where having extra megapickles actually makes sense. Been looking at some of these new 200MP sensors, but I feel that given the size of phone sensors, 50MP is the highest practical resolution for the moment. Focusing now on sensor size, instead, but I still prefer a 48-50 over a 12MP big sensor. Glad to hear they've improved the glass, though. From playing around with various flagships over the past two years, even with phones using the same basic Sony or Samsung sensors as their competitors, the quality of the optics themselves makes a mega difference.
Did you tried xperia pro i ? It has a 1/1.3" used 12mp sensor. Im thinking too that 12mp is a little to small mp but at least with sony younget a full resolution RGB Pattern and not that quad bayer software stuff from all other phones like sammy, vivo, xiaomi... .
@@residentCJ I've shot with the Pro I a few times. Love the optical quality, HDR isn't quite up there with newer phones at this point, but I'm on the lookout for a secondhand one to play around with.
I also shoot product photography and try best I can with the phones.. currently S24 Ultra..though couldn't get a pic worth a crap out of it today and had to go pro camera..the 12mp on the phones seems to me the best of it ..all else seems overly processed up scaled poo
@@therealdeal4492 Depends on the unit. Samsung's sharpening is a bit too aggressive... it even sharpens in RAW mode! My older Huawei has less aggressive sharpening, and has a high resolution AI mode that does noise reduction and stacks exposures for more clarity. Not great for stuff like foliage, but for prod photos, as long as they're only on the web, it's fine.
Finally someone who speaks is speaking some sense. Was thinking about buying the s23 ultra but when looked at camera sensor decided not to. In my view could have just kept the 100 mp pixels or whatever they used last time and used a bigger sensor would produce better photos. I would rather have a thicker phone with a one inch sensor. I dont mind having a phone couple of mm thicker.
Steller review, accurate and to the point . I was always a pixel user until I bought my s22 and could use dex. I took a direct hit on a better, more consistent camera experience to be able to be productive with one device that I could hook to a monitor and actually work but take good solid photos also .. Samsung is the work horse you described and I'm glad you hit the key points and direct people to use a device that's best for their use case.
It's crazy to me that phones are such crazy overkill for compute power, and SO FEW folks really tap that power. I'm no longer much of a Samsung fan, but Dex will ALWAYS get a huge thumbs up from me.
@@SomeGadgetGuy I was never a Samsung fan, but dex is a game changer for my career I don't have to open my computer to answer emails . I do miss the consistency of the pixel cams taking pics of my kids but I feel like I utilize the the power of my phone better with dex being used. Keep up the great content. I scratch my head as to why you don't have a much bigger following.
I have the Galaxy S22U and have been wondering how the "200mp" mode on the S23U compares with the 108mp on mine. I have to say the 108mp is amazing in certain conditions but only when you toggle the "detail enhancer " option. A strange extra step to have to take since getting more detailed photos is surely the whole point of these hi res modes! Can you confirm whether the "detail enhancer" option is still there on the Note 23 and if it makes any difference?
I've had the "Note 23" thing for two weeks; feels like 3. I think I saw the enhancer option once but I need some more time before I can say more about it. Also, all those settings Samsung offers from their Good Lock apps should already be on the phone. Like the ability to force using tele cameras even in low light, or disabling excessive sharpening in the 12-megapickle mode. Or the whole "Expert RAW" sub-app that competes with the regular Pro mode. One positive thing, though - the "intermediate" 50-megapickle mode is great and I'll keep using it in daylight or even good artificial light. It also feels less overprocessed than the nominal 12-megapickle mode.
@Danijel Ujčič that's good to know, thanks for the info. I'll probably keep the S22U a while longer but have to say I am curious about the 200mp mode on the s23u since I'm really impressed with the 108mp photos on mine. Kind of surprised Juan wasn't so taken by it.
Atleast let 2-3 updates roll out to fine tune. My 14 pro max camera was very unreliable. Highlight in hdr, crushed shadows etc were issues I faces. now its fine but still requires some more tuning. So I think this is same with S23U as it is a new sensor and seeing their record,I think it will improve within next 2-3 months.
So is the NEW 1" sensor. Why do we have to give Apple and Samsung time to "polish" with updates but CRUCIFY any other brand for the slightest flaw? This is why the conversation is so lopsided. Both are new phones, running new hardware. I think it's a fair comparison and unfortunately the S23U main sensor just doesn't compare.
Finally something more than the standard superficial reviews and finally someone to point at what really matters in phone cameras! I myself have S21U/S22U and now S23U, but I have them because of the whole package experience and availalability issues with Vivo in EU. If choosing with mainly camera in mind I'd get X90Poro+ in an heartbeat. On the positive side S23U raw and 50mp modes are a lot better than what S22U had to offer. Also low light is significantly better despite the sensor is practically the same size.
@@danijelujcic8644 50mp is way less oversharpened and natural looking compared to the binned 12mp and also is usable to a fairly dark conditions actually. It has to be pretty dark environment before the 12mp shots become to look better.
@@user-ij8no5zw6u- Yup, I forgot to mention the (lack of) processing unlike in some of my other comments here. That 50-megapickle mode really is a "hidden" gem. Sigh ... I wish Samsung had returned to 2×2 Bayer instead of pushing 4×4. Then we'd have a camera with higher chroma resolution than even the one in Nokia 808 (and 1020).
@@adyady3099 Better performance as well. Face unlock and fingerprint even are not good enough for me, other brand's face unlock is twice as fast and more accurate. So yes S23 is a lot better than S22, but at the same time Vivo has to offer more in certain areas...
The 200mpix of samsung or 50mp of vivo or 48mp of iPhone.........ex are in Reality juste 8or 10mp max of real detail capture in good light and less in low light all the pro photographers know that but Unfortunately, some of them lie to the followers for the sake of propaganda, they all know that the professional photos from the cameras are light years away from the photos of the phones processed by artificial intelligence.
The best use of ten mega pixels I've seen was with the Nokia 808 and lumia 1020 preview, nokia's algorithm was crazy, especially considering that they used processors and software from 10/11 years ago. But even today in photographic comparisons they don't disfigure so much except in hdr, and they shot at 8 or 5 mpx.
The 1020 has a 41 megapixel sensor, and outputs lower res by default, but in RAW you get the full 38 megapixel. Wait, where's the other 3? Those are for 4:3 shots. Nokia had dual-aspect sensors. With a sensor size of 12mm, it is very close to the Vivo (camera inches are not inches..... those are 16mm).
Ugh, I haven't seen any daylight since the day before I bought my Note 23 two weeks ago (feels like 3). On few rare days we had enough daylight despite thick clouds, the 200-megapickle mode indeed offered a small improvement over the 50-megapickle one; it's just that the advantage took a nosedive the moment it had to start raising the ISO. I won't go into the full the good/the bad/the ugly thing, I'll just mention a few things I wish Samsung did. First, if they had kept the 2×2 Bayer array, like Xiaomi did with their first 108-megapickle phone camera in late 2019. I'd love to see how well (or not) the 200-megapickle photos stack up to 64-megapickle 1×1 Bayer photos from some of Samsung's "zoom" cameras. Second, for macro mode, it could've been either flowers (and trees) or the letter M and numbers. Either way, I agree, those two dots are derpy. Third, all those settings Samsung offers from their Good Lock apps should already be on the phone. Like the ability to force using tele cameras even in low light, or disabling excessive sharpening in the 12-megapickle mode. Or the whole "Expert RAW" sub-app that competes with the regular Pro mode. Fourth, the 12-megapickle mode should've been 12.5-megapickle mode without the slight crop and if they wanted to keep 12.5-megapickle default output across all cameras, they should've just made 12.5-megapickle sensors. Here's hoping that 2+ years down the line we get a consistent 50 or 64 2×2 Bayer resolution across ALL sensors. Fifth ... IDK. There's more. But for some other day. THANK YOU for making these videos. Almost NOBODY discusses subpickles or filter arrays anymore. Or microphone quality in loud environments like concerts after Nokia's Lumia range was slowly tortured and killed off. Cheers!
Great video..people do tend to fall for more MP means better pics and hence such marketing strategies adopted by companies. I still believe S23U is the best all round camera phone even though there are phones with larger sensor, less shutter lag, etc but S23U does provide good all round performance. All the 1 inch sensor phones compromise heavily on front facing cameras which is a deal breaker. Ultimately its the whole package (camera + software + user experience) which matters
yeah thats where i stand. I'd happily admit Iphones and Vivos take better pictures/video (the differences aren't big enough to make a huge difference on instagram) but i wouldn't want an Apple phone, and definitely not a Chinese phone.
@@SomeGadgetGuy true..but so far i havent seen anyone taking selfie using rear camera. I have done that using fold 4 just coz there is a viewfinder on outer screen. Lets see when the 1 inch sensors make their way to samsung/ apple phones. Probably a few years away. Really enjoyed your videos and have subbed 🙂
If you play with a Note 23, just try it out. It takes VERY little practice to get the muscle memory. Even easier if you have a case with any reflectivity. I only use selfie cameras for video calls. 👍
i really like your reviews style, you always try to be honest and clear in it, you don't try to sell us the product you are reviewing unlike most of the youtubers, i do hate when they start nitpicking on small things on any other brand especially chinese ones and come up with really stupid flaws such " i have to swipe twice to reach the notification panel and such " and doesn't bother to do the same nor bother to go in-depth when it comes to sams or apple products sadly. when i ever need an honest review i always try to refer to your videos, cause i know there would be all the things that i need to know either be cons or pros. i thank you for your honesty and i hope you will one day reach 1m subs, you deserve it.
Amazing review. As s23 ultra owner, im very satisfied with it. Just wait few for months for more software update, usually, the camera will improve greatly, my previous phone was s20+ before i upgraded to s23ultra. So i know what im in to As for tge prices, yeah, i admit it was expensive, but for me, Samsung ONE UI is superior to any other Android brand OS. So smooth, stable, good, and secure. another thing is, it's still better dollar/quality than iPhone 14 pro max. It's not like im upgrading my phone yearly(only sometimes)
Glad to see that atleast someone pointing out the truth. From the very beginning i was aware of the gimmicks of pixel binning/quad bayer sensors. They give worst of both worlds i.e neither has true high resolution nor gives better low light output. I wish there should be a smartphone with a single 1" 20mp sensor with a very high quality Lenses(27mm equi), variable aperture f1.4-5.6, mechanical shutter and xenon flash. Camera bump?...i don't care at all.
As a photographer and as a person who knows that photo is the game of light and physics, you should know that small sensors need more light to function so I suggest you take out the phones with megapickels and cameras with megapiXels outside not in cloudy darker environments and check which one is which. You will be surprised...
I fell into the trap with the s22 ultra and regret it..... from the pixel 7 pro cause I wanted more manual features....never again. Hopefully sony will utilize their own sensor to the full extent in the next xperia
I upgraded from the S21U (Exynos) to the S23U and honestly the camera is not that much better. The only problem I have with Samsung's camera system is the lower than average success rate of the autofocus system in auto mode, i.e. blurry pictures of moving subjects like children of pets. However what is a noticeable improvement is the battery life. Now I don't have to carry battery packs with me when I travel abroad.
Yeah it's a MUCH bigger upgrade for users outside South Korea and the USA. Exynos was so bad, Samsung wouldn't even use it in their home country. Through no merit of Samsung's foundry, and getting their chip from TSMC, Samsung users got a nice little performance per watt upgrade. When LG stans like me were talking about how amazing the battery was on the V60, Samsung owners could have had those same benefits YEARS ago. RUclips influencers kept selling you a lie though.
Excellent comparison video on image quality between the different options. Great conversation. Will be going on my trip upcoming week and can't wait to test out bad boy x90 pro plus and my 6400+2.8 lens
Wonderful video mate. Really puts it all into perspective. And I still have more to learn that's for sure. I'm really wanting to try one of these one inch sensors. Find X6 Pro will likely be the one.
I'm more than happy to take a 50MP 1" sensor like the IMX989 over the 200MP 1/1.33" sensor, especially when you look at the fact that the overhyped 200MP sensor doesn't produce any bigger effective pixel size at 12MP than the native RGB 12MP 1" sensor of the Sony Xperia Pro-I. Plus, the Sony photo quality is way more natural and realistic than that 200MP camera.
You really can't help but amaze by Sony's processing algorithm. Even if you use GSMArena's Photo Comparison tool and compate both the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Xperia Pro-I, you can easily see just how realistic the Xperia Pro-I details are. It's just unreal.
Aww buddy... I feel more resolution on a screen helps those who need corrective lenses just as much, or sometimes more. I know that feel though. Getting old sucks...
high resolution modes are only meant for outdoor bright light conditions , and there is a difference when you zoom in , its useful cuz its not over sharpened like the default mode , i wish they give us a sharpnesss slider
I think there's a sharpness (or softening, not sure) setting in Samsung's camera assistant (Good Lock apps, available only on Samsung's own app store). I'm not sure if it eases the default oversharpening or just blurs the already-processed photo. That assistant thing should've been integrated into the main camera app. Maybe it's just a bait to force uses into making Samsung accounts (I don't have one - yet)?
@@SomeGadgetGuy The 200-megapickle mode offers a tiny improvement over the 50-megapickle one but only in not-too-bright daylight. I wish I knew the ISO and shutter speed of your test shots. But anyway, I'll stick to the 50-megapickle mode. It's easily my favorite mode in daylight and good artificial light. Also less processed than the nominal 12-megapickle mode.
Great insight and analysis. There got to be benefits to the 1'' sensors. A shady area that probably matters is the bandwidth between the cam and the memory. Why same phone with different chipset result in different photos. Third and not insignificant for non raw is the computational wizardry. The periscope telefoto can make passable photos in 30x + zoom only because of this.
for zooming is the best periscop zoom lens (search for that) and if you compare pixel 7 pro 10x and s23u 10x the winner will surprisingly be the pixel 7 pro
I recently got the note23, waa nice stepping into android again after being stuck with apple, im always watching videos on the note23, loved this video of yours, i need to mess with this phone and see what other things i can do with it other than watch youtube and take random photos, the battery on the note23 is a beast imo
REALLY dig into the SPen and Dex settings. It's gonna blow your mind how much more "computer" you own over an iPhone. A geekbench score means NOTHING compared to real desktop style productivity software. 👍
Loved the honest clarification, I was going to get S23 ultra for the productivity (hoping that the Camera is the best). Just subscribed, but my honest advice, to keep videos under 10 minutes or so in general, will get you lot more subscribers
@@SomeGadgetGuy Aw...I love ultra but the Chinese bloat wares are too much for me and I get no update after a year. Hope they decide to make ultra globally!
Unfortunately, the bloggers with millions of subs, are still mostly only giving their opinions on a device. But people loyal to any said blogger will assume that their favourite is always right.
How is the experience of using a xiomi or vivo in the US? Are there missing bands? Worse reception? I’m just curious because camera is most important to me. Thanks.

I miss my old G9. But welcome my S5. And I am really, really considering the Vivo. I like its looks too. I am not a big fan of glass backs. But how will it compare to my XPERIA 5 iii Juan?
Now this is education! Love the video Juan. 30 minutes to go into detail about one shot in a controlled setup with an advanced comparison. Well done sir.
I'll never get the people who defend the argument.it doesn't make any sense to buy a super expensive phone (especially an android these days) and only do the bare minimum basics on it.
If it doesn't work with a hard studio light on the subject, with the phone on a tripod, and using a timer to reduce any vibration, at some point we need to say maybe it isn't that big of a perk...
I appreciate your view and you are truly an expert in photography, but as a Samsung knight (my photography knowledge is of course way inferior to yours) i feel like the scenario where this picture was tested is not ideally constructed to bring out the best from the S23 Ultra camera and doesn'tdo it justice i guess the iso wasnt 50 or less in this picture (and the Vivo also), because this tiny pixels need strong daylight (possibly sunshine) to deliver, a i am impressed when i take 200mpx photos with the crazy level of detail (but only outdoors and on sunny days). So i feel the 200mpx is well appreciated to play with sometimes because it's just there as an option nobody is anyway going to buy because of that this phone. cheers.
It was iso 100 in the manual and raw photos. I exposed for STUDIO lights on the pup, and to draw out more contrast with the rest of the office being darker. I've gotten this complaint a couple times from the KNIGHTS (and the fact that you haven't resorted to homophobic or misogynistic slurs, I'd say you're a Samsung "Fan" and we can be pals). "200MP only works in daylight" really doesn't make any sense. That just means "200mp needs a faster shutter to overcome hand shake, and give the camera more time to scan and re-mosaic individual pixels". So why wouldn't it work on a studio lit subject on a tripod to also get a decently quick shutter, low ISO noise, and with spot lighting on the subject?
I was thinking of buying this phone. And it is so difficult to find your reviews on RUclips. I am currently using the pixel 4 xl. The photos are too notch even when compared to latest phones. But I need something for work now and I think I might have to compramise in the photo quality.
I just want a phone to take pics of family, friends and pets. Ideally it should be good at taking moving subject pics too (many brands have functions for this but some work better than others). Regardless of the sensor size some very expensive flagships still struggle with people pictures indoors
In the most casual point and shoot situations, I think you'd be HARD pressed to beat Google right now. Pixel photos are EXCELLENT in this snapshot kinda use. The experience you're describing is WELL served by a Pixel 6A. You have to get REALLY specific about WHY someone should spend more than a Pixel 6A.
I've learned to shrug off all marketing with products. If you do you'll be happier in life. And you'll keep more money in your pocket.I don't know why anyone would be a brand defender. We need brands to compete. If they don't you get no innovations. If you're a fanboy you aren't helping drive brands to compete.
By the way it looks like samsung isn't interested in putting a larger sensor in their phones. There are talks of them thinking that the current sensor is the maximum size they can fit inside the chasis before the phone's design, balance and durability take a hit. Maybe they will change their mind when some other new tech come out of their labs?
Or they just feel they have a lock on markets like North America, so why spend money to really innovate? They want people to use more fragile folding phones, and they're trying to destroy right to repair. There's more money in making people replace phones more frequently than in making better phones.
Samsung is better than vivo because Samsung is the most popular android brand 😅😅😅 those comments are funny. Juan, They don't know anything about tech man. Megapixels aren't everything. The size of the sensor matters the most.
The ultra beat your camera, just looks better no matter how you slice it. And I'm sure you can make a video that makes each of these look like the best. Seriously the 50mp raw samsung photo was the best. Don't make a video next year siding with the ultra lol(kidding). wish you would've moved that clarity slider on the vivo so I could see what you did. These days its hard to knock Sammy boy. Comment is all in fun though sir. appreciate the content sir just my thoughts. Awesome review, teach. And for your concern about devices I think we're fine, you stated only 10 per buy premium. Companies copying applies business model is smart because Apple is neglecting responsibility, samsung on the other hand is throwing more than you can handle at you. I respect your perspective I just think samsung is doing an awesome job with knowing the ins and outs.i rather they lead us than apple. And for the competitors, they all seem like knock offs even apple at this point with their imessage and ecosystem that's severely outdated.
Sounds like someone trying to defend their $1000 lens cause its basically getting smoked by phones. The difference in raw looked way better than what you were saying in the video, file size is probably a huge gripe.
Kinda doubt it. Only Apple shows a hugely noticeable improvement between RAW and JPG. If you shoot 48MP from the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max and then downscaled it to 12MP, it looks way more natural than the processed 12MP JPG.
Never knew sensors had pickles. I'll stick with my 1020 for a bit longer..... Fluor yellow with massive camera bump and battery/camera grip case is hard to beat.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Yeah, but I do like the single big sensor phone idea. If a company was making a single lens dual aspect (4:3+16:9) 16mm sensor (=1") with sensor-shift OIS regular Bayer 50ish Megapixel with 4K OLED 16:9 screen and no notch with selfie-crap, I would be taking the leap. But catering Tik Tok grannies is higher priority.
Can you make a video of how to use the best way possible vivo camera for normal users? For example in portrait mode, we have tons of Zeiss filters but which one is the better at what scenario?
I try not to make really surface level "guides". I don't think they work very well. "In this scenario use this mode". You THINK it would be consistent, but that kind of advice rarely works out in real world situations. I might like the bokeh quality in one mode for areas with a busy background, but you might prefer a different bokeh quality in that same scene. YOUR eye matters more than my blind advice. THE most critical thing I recommend, is get REALLY familiar with your camera BEFORE you need to capture a real moment. I think too many people try to figure out settings or modes WHILE an important event is happening.
I think it's more "camera like". If you want to hyper isolate a subject, software will cut them out. But I find the natural bokeh from the lens looks REALLY nice.
Megapikles.. It's always a win when you have someone with the knowhow breakdowns everything to leave you thinking; "am I really missing out?" Love you Juan❤️
None now? Maybe just the Moto Edge+ on sale? The closest we got was the LG Velvet. We should have been pushing for more features, but reviewers all rolled over for Samsung copying apple. Now if you want a cheaper phone with a good desktop mode, you're basically shopping older phones, or hoping that Moto can't sell their phones for a profit (which means we get fewer phones from Moto).
It's all money. It costs more to advertise, and they likely know they won't see significant returns on increased spending over a year. The brand slowly deflates until they just pull the plug.
The Samsung's 200 MP main cam has 0.6 um Pixel size & this is the smallest pixel size any smarphone cam has and comparing the Sony IMX989 which has a whopping 1.6um pixel size!!.. It is just no comparison at all.. The Vivo X90 Pro & Xiaomi 13 Pro main cam is far superior hardware wise!
The funniest thing about S23 Ultra is the lower res selfie cam. I mean, it's probably an upgrade compared to S22 Ultra's 40mp one, but selling that idea is hard when the phone's whole marketing revolves around "200mp GREAT".
RIGHT! Drives me nuts, because we should just be talking about the better camera. Sensor and optics. But they're trying to recreate the marketing arms race of the old point and shoot cameras. It's so dumb.
i agree with the marketing thing. i told my father on these 2 phones, he is more impressed with 200MP than 1 inch 50MP, mainly due to extra 0. "more means better right?" i mean, it is easier to sell samsung than vivo. they more expert on selling their product to mainstream market, while vivo can only target to those that have specific knowledge in photography world. geek like us, we most probably go to vivo and sony to have very good cameraphone, while people like my father, they tend to falls to easy marketing like samsung or apple.
Now add that marketing advantage to RUclips revenue. If someone is going to make more money on a samsung video than a vivo video, what does that mean for online reviews?

Thanks for an excellent video and for your honesty. Samsung has a very impressive marketing that seems to have convinced the fans that 200mp is a breakthrough in mobile photography. The real breakthrough is the 1" sensor and amazing Zeiss collaboration seen on the Vivo. I bought the Vivo x90 pro+ - being a professional photographer I notice the leap forward in how the sensor enables cleaner, less processed photos
It sucks. If more folks on YT were actual TECH fans and not just samsung BRAND fans, we could more directly talk about merit and real beneficial improvements. Instead I keep getting folks (who have OBVIOUSLY not seriously shot on a vivo or xiaomi) just making things up to feel better about the brand they like. Samsung gets so much marketing for free from these guys...
"Making things up" is an understatement. When they continuously say that 1+ hr charge time is ok in 2023 then we're talking about a state of delirium. You're absolutely right about Samsung having the biggest unpaid marketing team the world has ever known.

As to my snark in this video, if you’re someone who likes Samsung, but doesn’t define their whole personality by what phone they own, I hope you can have a chuckle over my frustrations analyzing Samsung’s silly marketing.
All prices are after the best discounts we could get and including 18% tax for 256GB variant
And, this low pricing of Chinese manufacturers confuse me, as the Chinese version itself is slightly costlier than the Indian price including tax.

I will say this I like the way the the Note 23 records videos. Your realistic reviews are always appreciated.

Juan just explained a question that has been on my mind for months. "Why not just use bigger pixels vs binning?" Nice! Thanks!
That is why I still highly rate the Nokia/Microsoft's PureView technique, especially during the Windows Phone days. The photo quality of the 808 and the Lumia 1020 can still rival modern smartphones, including Sony.
Really like your level of honesty, transparency and sense of humour, keep up the good work :D
I really appreciate that. Always glad to meet a few other geeks that like digging into the nuts and bolts.
Exactly. Bigger sensor means more light and detail. Bigger resolution is only useful for printing, that's it.
It's better for low light but for overall detail 16MP is still better
8gen2 has been a revelation. I don't think I've ever seen this kind of improvement or refinement year over year. TSMC + Qualcomm rocked it.
2-3x zoom is standard, 10x works really well so we're testing boundaries here lol
The 1x is just something we scarcely need now...

So then which resolution should we use from those 3 options ? 12MegaPickles 50 or 200?what would give the "best result/quality"
It was but then Samsung decided to not sell Note 23 Ultra
@@xtechtips152 what do you mean not sell it?
@Billy Dean s23u, note 23 - i don't really care about the name. It doesn't have anything to do with the question i asked.

I agree. All of Samsung's messy and sometimes derpy decisions set aside, I'll keep using the 50-megapickle mode in daylight and good artificial light.
@@danijelujcic8644 50mp is way less oversharpened and natural looking compared to the binned 12mp and also is usable to a fairly dark conditions actually. It has to be pretty dark environment before the 12mp shots become to look better.

@@adyady3099 Better performance as well. Face unlock and fingerprint even are not good enough for me, other brand's face unlock is twice as fast and more accurate.

With a sensor size of 12mm, it is very close to the Vivo (camera inches are not inches..... those are 16mm).
and here I thought we learned this already back during the one m7 and galaxy s4 days
🤷♂️
Cheers!
Can I have a sub pickle. I may eat a pickle after this.

Yeah... But once you get a feel for a rear camera selfie, you'll never go back to using the worst camera on your phone. 😄

another thing is, it's still better dollar/quality than iPhone 14 pro max.
Good review, but can be better. 1st, S23 Ultra can shot regular RAW in 50MP in PRO mode. 2nd, @14:24, seems the focus points are different
I fell into the trap with the s22 ultra and regret it..... from the pixel 7 pro cause I wanted more manual features....never again. Hopefully sony will utilize their own sensor to the full extent in the next xperia
Ugh... I REALLY hope we see a PRO ii, and they can take that sensor and give us 4k120... 🤩
@@SomeGadgetGuy Definitely want to see the next-gen Xperia Pro-I with 4K/120 support for ultrawide and telephoto camera.
Dude. You're in for a treat when you can grab one 😊
@@SomeGadgetGuy very soon I'm sure. Might give the Note a go first though.
That sony look is SO camera-like. I love it...
They say the human eye is about 500 megapixel!? My eyes are SVGA though...
Aww buddy... I feel more resolution on a screen helps those who need corrective lenses just as much, or sometimes more.
I know that feel though. Getting old sucks...
all people should watch this video
Oh I'm expecting the YT algorithm to trash this one too.
Does Samsung's 50MP Expert RAW takes better quality photos than Vivo's regular 50MP mode? I'm interested in the level of visible details.
Nope. Expert RAW processing pictures exactly as the auto mode, overprocessing it. You get dng files that processed badly. It's madness.
@@Dicktopus kinda too late but thanks 😅
high resolution modes are only meant for outdoor bright light conditions , and there is a difference when you zoom in , its useful cuz its not over sharpened like the default mode , i wish they give us a sharpnesss slider
So we should have seen improvements on the stuffed dog with the studio lights I had blasting that subject?
One thing I have found I like about the pixel binned zoom shots; I love taking intentionally distorted zoom pics. This camera is great for that.
for zooming is the best periscop zoom lens (search for that) and if you compare pixel 7 pro 10x and s23u 10x the winner will surprisingly be the pixel 7 pro

Naw. I want QUALITY subscribers not QUANTITY subs 😉
Can you tell me quick.. Is x100 equals to x90pro .. I am buying today which is better at same cost? Urgent.. Give some explaining too

Probably not? I'm holding cash in reserve to grab an Ultra as soon as those are available.

The Note.23. Finally! it's called by its proper name.

Yeap. It "quacks".

Have they fix the capturing of fast moving objects?
How is the experience of using a xiomi or vivo in the US? Are there missing bands? Worse reception? I’m just curious because camera is most important to me. Thanks.
Excellent points on camera technology in phones. Excellent work in this video.
I'm not sure I'll ever be able to buy one of these phones, but your video was very interesting to me. Greetings from Ukraine !
It's great to see you're still helping consumers out with your advice after all these years. Thank you Juan.
But at 14:21 the white furs on the muzzle and brown furs on the eyebrow look better, more detailed with S23U
Excellent presentation, nice to have the views of a true photographer
What's the point of getting the 23 Ultra unless you're at least a little interested in photography.
I'll never get the people who defend the argument.it doesn't make any sense to buy a super expensive phone (especially an android these days) and only do the bare minimum basics on it.
Actually you need more light to see benefits of 200mpx. You shouldn't use just 1 indoor photo for comparison.
If it doesn't work with a hard studio light on the subject, with the phone on a tripod, and using a timer to reduce any vibration, at some point we need to say maybe it isn't that big of a perk...
I love what the S23 Ultra brings this year!
So i feel the 200mpx is well appreciated to play with
sometimes because it's just there as an option nobody is anyway going to buy because of that this phone.
Another great video. Thanks for the honest camera review 😃. You're one of a kind.
The megapixels aren't much of an upgrade?! You have to validate our purchase!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤣🤣🤣
😅 We know some knights are gonna get their undies twisted on this one.
200mp needs well lightening condition but you did it in literally low light condition
With a studio light blasting the stuffed animal? On a tripod? How's that Samsung boot taste?
I was thinking of buying this phone. And it is so difficult to find your reviews on RUclips. I am currently using the pixel 4 xl. The photos are too notch even when compared to latest phones. But I need something for work now and I think I might have to compramise in the photo quality.
Learned a lot, thank you!
You take science information from the geek zone to the pop zone! Excellent radio voice too!
"AvuRag cuNzOOmERs" 😂 😂...... I always love Juan's commitment to always say it as it is while educating people how these things work overall..
@@SomeGadgetGuyGood advice. Thanks!
Juan....it's been a while.... happy to c u back
I didn't go anywhere LOL...
@@SomeGadgetGuy lol you issues with Samsung seems person calm down
Man you're so underrated! You deserve to have a million subs. I've learned a lot from you.
Aw thanks. I prefer QUALITY subscribers over QUANTITY subs 😉
I have an LG device. ( A V50). It takes awesome photos. But you vids are awesome Juan. Keep posting the good vibes.
Nothing wrong with that. The V50 is still a tank. 👍
Samsung is better than vivo because Samsung is the most popular android brand 😅😅😅 those comments are funny. Juan, They don't know anything about tech man. Megapixels aren't everything. The size of the sensor matters the most.
Gotta keep shouting it.
One big thing for me, besides cameras are battery life. Can Vivo come close to S23 ultra?
I saw the photos from GSMArena review and it's an oversharpened mess. Even the S21/S21+ produce way better photo than that.
The guy tried hard to downplay Samsung 😆
I didnt have to do much. Samsung only crushes below $400.
Bro you nailed it... Its a great video. Truth only triumphs....
🤝
Never knew sensors had pickles. I'll stick with my 1020 for a bit longer..... Fluor yellow with massive camera bump and battery/camera grip case is hard to beat.
As a lifelong fan of the 1020, I feel the era of the 1" type sensor we enjoy today is the right time to consider your upgrade.
Thank you! Do you think the natural bokeh from normal camera mode is better than even portrait mode bokeh?
I think it's more "camera like". If you want to hyper isolate a subject, software will cut them out. But I find the natural bokeh from the lens looks REALLY nice.
Makes sense! Thank you
Megapikles.. It's always a win when you have someone with the knowhow breakdowns everything to leave you thinking; "am I really missing out?"
Love you Juan❤️
Thanks for this so helpful video!
Thank YOU. I'm glad you found this video helpful 😊
I'm curious, Juan: What phones under $600 have a nice desktop feature on par with or close to DeX, faster than 30w charging, and a premuim SoC?
@@SomeGadgetGuy It makes you wonder why Motorola doesn't put more effort towards advertising Ready For or making more accessories for it...
It's all money. It costs more to advertise, and they likely know they won't see significant returns on increased spending over a year. The brand slowly deflates until they just pull the plug.
Your only choice for that is Motorola, that's it. Even Huawei's Mate 50/50 Pro cost at least $800.
Great video and awesome information 😊 I actually learned something
😊
Bigger sensors gives better result
The Samsung's 200 MP main cam has 0.6 um Pixel size & this is the smallest pixel size any smarphone cam has and comparing the Sony IMX989 which has a whopping 1.6um pixel size!!.. It is just no comparison at all..
The Vivo X90 Pro & Xiaomi 13 Pro main cam is far superior hardware wise!
Now that is quality content x10! Amazing work!
Beautifully detailed and informant.
By far the best smartphone camera reviewer on RUclips.
i agree with the marketing thing. i told my father on these 2 phones, he is more impressed with 200MP than 1 inch 50MP, mainly due to extra 0.
This is a perfect example of why I follow Juan and keep watching his videos.
Not only does he review the product, he teaches you about its specific features and how they work.
isn't samsung have option to disable auto switch macro mode?
one of the few ultra phone reviews that I have seen and not felt like a chimp is talking about cameras! Kudos!
It takes SO MUCH more work to try and really test this stuff...

Yup. I bought it for the 10x zoom. I would have been just fine with it sticking with a 50 MP main shooter.
I just wish those SUPER zoom sensors weren't so tiny. They'd be more useful in late afternoon and early evening. The lenses would be HUGE though.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Yup. I would not mind the extra weight, thickness, or whatever it would take for that, even on a hypothetical Fold Ultra.
