So in order to not make your drawings look flat, you need to use Ovals and guidelines? And then when you are good enough you just draw from your imagination?
Using ovals and guidelines is a great way to improve! And the best approach at the beginning is to draw from references. In that way you'll understand how to "see" these ovals and underlying forms. After a good amount of practice it'll massively help you to draw from imagination! Because you'll know exactly how to locate the basic volumes of your characters in space :)

Right now it’s my go-to for everyday work! I do concept art and illustration - so far it fits for me perfectly, but it took some time to get used to it after photoshop
