    The first thing you have to do to get your car design drawings to look more like professional drawings is to...
    Stop Drawing Cars!
    I know it sounds counter intuitive but in order to go forward, we must go back. If we are not going to sketch cars, what are we going to draw? What we are going to draw are speed forms. If you stripe away the function of a car, and just look at the form, you basically have a sculpture.
    Well, that is what we are going to work on. Sculptures. Sculptures that look like they are moving, flowing, interacting with the air. Speed forms will teach you how to sketch from your shoulder and to stop drawing from your hand
    The purpose of this exercise is to teach your muscles how to sketch in a new way, this is vitally important if you want to get better and make you car design drawings look more professional.
    Draw in sweeping strokes from your shoulder, NOT scratching away from your wrist or hand. Forget all the details like, grills, mirrors and even wheels and tires. They will come later
    The shapes can be based on anything you want, animals, spaceships, fish, birds, sharks, etc. Go crazy and be creative.
    At this point, the focus should be on how you are drawing vs. what you are drawing. And this may sound harsh but this is reality folks: If you never learn to draw cars from your shoulder, no one who matters to your career as a car designer will care about what you are drawing anyway.
    Once you learn to generate your car design drawings with this technique you can spend hours focusing on developing a visual vocabulary of your own.
    The second step to improve the quality of your car design drawings is to change the materials you are drawing cars with. If you can, and I know these materials might not be be available to everyone in every location, stop drawing with #2 pencils, stop drawing with ball point pens and stop drawings on loose leaf paper.
    Get an 18x 24 newsprint pad and some prismacolor pencils or similar, soft leaded color pencils. Get 5-10 pencils of a dark color you like. The soft lead will teach you how to work with line weight. This is also vitally important for taking your car design drawings to the next level.
    The colored pencils and drawing speed forms go hand in hand so stay with it. Again the purpose of this exercise is to break out of drawing from your hand and learn to draw from your shoulder. Draw big. That is the purpose of moving to an 18" x 24" pad.
    If you're tired of not seeing any improvement in the quality of your car design drawings, or your drawings lack the energy and flow of the sketches you admire online, try this exercise out for yourself and let me know how it works for you.
    Thanks for watching.

    +how to draw cars I am a 16 year old kid seriously wanting to be a professional car designer.Could you recommend basic steps to be one?(exercises to improve sketching, what to do in and after college,etc. Thank you.) Your videos are awesome by the way.Keep 'em coming!

      Herold - The basic steps to improve is to follow the lessons of my videos and other videos like them. Like anything in life, if you want to be great at something you have to practice. A lot. Becoming a car designer is like becoming a professional athlete. You have to have some natural skills but you also have to work very hard on improving those skills to become a pro.
      For college you have to apply and then attend a top or second tier design school. If it is a top school, the training your get in the 4 years you are there should set you up to be scouted by the car companies. If it is a second tier school, you have have to work a bit harder to get their attention, but it is doable.
      The fastest way to improve would be to come and take a class with me. We are seeing amazing results with students your age who are getting their portfolios ready for college and are getting scholarships. You can sign up here - www.howtodrawcars.net
      I started the service because I wanted aspiring designers to have access to quality education to answer the very questions you have, one on one. Our program works and our students are succeeding. It's very reasonable and we have students from all over the world. If you're really serious about succeeding, I would come and check it out.
      Glad you like the videos.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  7 лет назад

      If people do not practice they will not improve. If you do not improve you will not get accepted to a top design school. If you do not get accepted to a top school, no one will hire you to design cars. It's that simple. That is why you either have the passion or you do not. The passion sustains you when it feels like work. The world is full of "wanna be" car designers who never worked as hard as they could have.
      I am glad the channel is helping you. Thanks for watching.

    Great videos two question how long should you draw speed form and were do you find then (Google)

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад +1

      There are two basic purposes for drawing speed forms. For the aspiring designer they help develop line quality and overall drawing technique. For someone more advanced, they are used as a way to create new form vocabularies.
      Designers "come of age" during different trends in auto design. Right now faceted surfaces, hard angles and large front grills are in fashion. This is the last thing you should be drawing if you want to design cars. You need to be inventing what will come next, not what already exists. Drawing speed forms can help get you there.
      As far as where to find them, they are all around you. Take a life drawing class. Go to an aquarium with a sketch pad and draw any sea life that looks interesting. Go to a zoo and do the same thing. Look at Henry Moore sculpture. I would start with this video :
      ruclips.net/video/bOLcz9qjE-E/видео.html
      It'll give you the basic idea. Thanks for your questions.

    Great tutorial , thanks for posting sir. I will surely start up sketching with prismacolor pencils. Do you use ebony black ?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  8 лет назад +1

      Love your avatar! I like to use tuscan red for sketching but you can use any color you like. I find dark colors work best. Black would be an excellent choice. I see many students who start our program sketching with fine art pencils. The quality of your line work and overall quality of your drawings will improve with the prismacolors. Please keep in touch and let me know how it works out for you!

    • @SidharthRath1
      @SidharthRath1 8 лет назад +1

      oh thanks a lot :) for your quick reply sir. I have used STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph Pencil....8B but I was not able to have pressure control, I was not able to control the line depth/ darkness. I was about to order the prismacolor ebony dark black pencil , but I see red color is having more dynamic effect than the black which would give only tones of grey. red is more eye-catching. Did you use cotton pads to add the mid-tones?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  8 лет назад

      Glad you are becoming aware of the limitations of the fine art pencils. You'll see a big difference in your work with the prima colors. For the mid tones, I just use a regular tissue folded to make a pad. Any cotton pad will work. You want to work the surface lightly with the pad to add the soft haze effect. Once you get this technique you can make your surface look very shiny. This is important for future lessons. Have you visited our site? There is more info and images our site. What other tutorials would you like to see?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  5 лет назад +1

      Take a look at the McLaren Speedtail or the new Mazda 3. Both those themes come from form studies. What you should be looking to establish is not a direct transfers of this curve or that curve, but developing a visual vocabulary that is original to you. Beyond drawing from your shoulder, the true point of speed forms is to come up with something new like Mazda and McLaren have done with their respective designs.

    Can you give us some advice on how to draw from shoulder on small formats. A4 paper or drawing tablets.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  4 года назад

      If you already know the technique, you just have draw as large as possible on the small format you have.
      If you don't know the technique, it will take you exponentially longer to learn drawing small. Could you learn to dance in a closet or box one handed?
      What you are trying to learn is really hard. If you cannot draw from your shoulder, find some larger media, butcher paper roll, paper bags, anything that will give you the room you need. Put the small format stuff away until you know what you're doing. Good luck.

    do you suggest prismacolor ebony or primier pencils?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  8 лет назад

      Prismacolor Premiere. Now there might be a Premiere color called ebony but you want to stay away from fine art pencils that usually have a "B" or "H" designation like "6B". The Premiere pencils will teach you how to judge how much pressure to use at any given moment. This is important for both analog drawing (real pencil and paper) and working digitally on a tablet. Thanks for the question!

    Do you think it’s necessary to get into design school to get a job as an automotive designer? Or do you think your talents can get you a job by having a great resume and a few connections?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  4 года назад +1

      It depends but the chances of getting hired without a degree are very slim. Here's why.
      The skill set you need to become a professional is so vast and difficult to learn, that it's almost impossible to do on your own. Design school is like military boot camp in the sense that is it designed to weed out less talented, weak minded people. If you start in your freshman year with 25 classmates, you'll have 8 or 9 left you when you graduate.
      Those 8 or 9 will be the most talented and mentally tough. Out of those, 5 might get offers. Design school is a caldron where you're pushed to the breaking point, competing each week with 15-20 other very talented people to become the best. The constant competition takes your skills to a level you just cannot get to on your own.
      Moreover, you can get exposure during school years through internships and company sponsored projects. It's VERY hard to do all this on your own. Go an look at the 2019 CCS graduating transportation class video. Compare that to what you are doing. See how close you are to those folks. You mention a person having a great resume. Of what? Automotive design is so specialized. The only thing I can think of off hand that would translate is production design for film. To become a production designer, you still need a degree.
      You'd have to be a design prodigy with a dad or mom who is a vice president at VW, GM or Toyota. If you think this is you, send me some of your work and I will give you some feedback. michael@howtodrawcars.net

      Julie- I'm using Prismacolor Premier pencils on a smooth, 18" x 24" newsprint pad. The pencils will teach you to control your line weight and quality and the paper is the least expensive large format paper available so there is no guilt if you mess up. Im going to do a video on materials next because so many people are asking. Thanks.

    I noticed the special way you are holding the pencil with a crooked index finger . Do you do that on purpose to trick your hand into drawing sweeping lines from the shoulder or is this a pathological issue or injury ?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  3 года назад

      It's neither. It's just how I hold a pencil. No one ever told me not to hold the pencil this way and even if someone did, I would not have listened anyway. The sweeping lines don't come from how you hold the pencil but how you move your entire arm.

    • @dipling.pitzler7650
      @dipling.pitzler7650 3 года назад

      That is funny because for detailed drawings in a small scale one usually needs to rest the tip of the index finger on the bottom of the pencil shaft to have more control.Even turning a lead Pencil around its axis while drawing sharp lines to avoid flattening on one side is difficult holding it the way you do. It is obvious considering your skill this is not an issue in your line of work.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  3 года назад

      I do a lot of fine art drawing as well where I am not drawing from my shoulder and it's never been an issue. I've never even thought about until I started posted videos and people started asking about it. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how you generate your work, the important thing is the work itself.

    Shall we use the shoulder technique only for cars and will we find it in digital drawing on tablets WITHOUT a screen?🤨

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  4 года назад

      It depends. It's a technique. You use it where it will produce the most benefit. For example, if you're doing gesture type figure drawings, it works well for that. If you're doing a figure drawing that is not a gesture drawing, drawing in a smaller way will yield the best results. It's the only technique used by pro car designers for drawing cars.

    Could you tell me, in which position do you sit or stand while drawing and angle of your arm while drawing....
    Sometimes I feel my table is a little too high for me which makes drawing with my shoulder a challenge....

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад

      There is no universal position. When I was at Chrysler each designer drew in a different position in relationship to their table. Even now, sometimes I stand and sometimes I sit depending on the technique and medium I am using.
      You need to do what is most comfortable for you in any given situation. If your table is too high, lower it. If the light is too low, get some more lights. Drawing cars is hard enough. You want your environment to be as comfortable and accommodating as can be to insure your success. Change whatever you need to to achieve a level of comfort that will support you doing your best work. Make sense?

    Thank you for the help and tips, but I don't have those materials available, like you said that it may not be available to everyone, I do got speacial drawing pencils, but not soft lead, and I only have loose leaf paper, would that work? That's my first question, my second question is that how can i get with a tutor, or mentor?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад

      You can use any materials available to you. I try to demonstrate using the materials that aspiring students or professional car designers would use but ones that are also the cheapest. The most important thing is to learn the techniques then you can transfer them to other materials when you gain access. It's hard to learn to draw from your shoulder with loose leaf not because there is anything wrong with the paper but because the sheets are very small and by the time you get your arm moving you're off the page! But keep practicing even it that is all you have.
      One idea to investigate is using butcher paper. I do not know where you are located but if you have a local store that cuts and sells meat they usually use a brown paper to wrap the meat in. This paper is sold in large rolls and is great for sketching cars. If you have a local shop that has this paper you can ask him to get you some and you can pay them. It's not expensive.
      Regarding finding a mentor or tutor, we tutor students from all over the world in my program. www.howtodrawcars.net. There is a fee but we try to keep the costs as low as possible. Many of our students are doing very well in competitions and getting accepted to prestigious design school in the US, Europe and India. Check out our site and send me an email with a sketch and I'll give you some feedback.

      I do not know any site that promote speed forms for copying. As suggested in the video, draw what every you can find and influence from: animals, birds, fish, sculpture, dancers, spaceships, science fiction movies, comic books. Whatever you have access to can act as inspiration for speed form ideas. The idea is to be creative and not limit yourself to what you think things should be. A creative person can find inspiration in almost anything. Give it a shot!

    what should i draw before drawing car

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  7 лет назад

      Draw whatever you like. Drawing should be something you do because you love it. It should not feel like work or drudgery. That is not to say it should not be challenging or hard at times, but drawing should be done because you have a passion for it. If you want to improve your design vocabulary for drawing cars, draw things that have a similar shape: planes, fish, animals, helicopters, shoes, human form.

      If you want to become a professional car designer you will have to practice everyday. How long you draw for is up to you. But always remember that somewhere in the world someone who will be applying for the same job opening as you is practicing. My suggestion is to find the areas in which you are the weakest and practice those. Don't just stick to the things you do well. You'll never get better. Good luck.

    I have a question: during the time i draw speed forms, can i try to draw cars? And how many speed forms should I do in a day?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад

      The idea of not drawing cars while you are spending time drawing speed forms is to allow your muscles and the brain that controls them to not have to think about the details inherent in drawing cars. The goal of the speed form exercise to two-fold: The first goal is to teach you to draw from your shoulder in a way that is natural and relaxed. The second is to develop a new vocabulary of form that you can THEN take back to your car design drawings.
      Drawing cars in the middle of this process can minimize the impact the speed form exercises will have on your skills. If you're sick of drawing speed forms, try drawing other types of vehicles, trains, bikes, helicopters, snowmobiles. Again, the goal is to come back to cars with some new skills and a new form language that you can then put into your car designs to get them to the next level. I'll be doing more speed form vids soon. Thanks for watching and for your excellent question.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад +2

      Regarding how many to do in a day.... This is very important for everyone looking to improve: Put the first sketch you do on a Monday on your wall. Then Friday put up all the sketches you did that week in chronological order Monday to Friday. If you haven't seen a serious improvement in the Friday sketches over the first sketch you put up on Monday, you're not drawing enough each day. It's that simple. You should see yourself getting better each week if you are working at it.
      In design school, you can go through a 50 sheet pad cut in half to make 2 50 sheet pads, so 100 sheets, in a week.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  7 лет назад

      You want to use any pencil that has a soft lead and good color range, where the dark is really dark and the light is very light. Many pro quality color pencils use a filler in the lead that prevents you from getting a really dark tone. The soft lead will teach you to control the pressure and your line weight. So any soft lead pencil will work. The materials are less important than the technique.

    hey michel i'm 24 ,a mechanical engineer want to be a car design engineer . how can i learn car designing ???

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  7 лет назад

      Car design and automotive engineering are two different disciplines. Automotive or car design is what we do on this channel. It is concerned with the exterior and interior look and someone's emotional response to the car. An automotive engineer is concerned with how the car functions, how it drives, how the engine or suspension works, etc. There are design engineers that work with designers to "prove out" what the designers dream up but it is still engineering.
      I am not sure which discipline you are most interested in, auto design or automotive engineering. If you are a mech. engineer and want to stay in engineering, you just have to prove to someone (a car company or automotive parts supplier) that your knowledge and skills transfer from what you are doing now to automotive products. This shouldn't be too hard as cars use so many mechanical parts.
      If you want to move from mech. engineering to automotive design, you're going to need specific training in how to represent your ideas, drawing, sketching rendering, etc. Making the jump would be like going from being a professional cricket player to a professional footballer. You're still an athlete but the skill set is different so you'll have a lot of work to do and there is no guarantee you'll be successful.
      Hope that answers your question.

    how could i apply this exercise to non-cars?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад +1

      The purpose of drawing speed forms for car designers is twofold. The first is to help develop a new form vocabulary. If you are drawing the same design shapes over and over, drawing speed forms inspired by things that do not look like your current design vocabulary will help break you out of that box and take you in a new direction.
      The second reason is to help young designers develop the technique of drawing from one's shoulder vs. drawing with your hand. If you never learn to draw from your shoulder, no one who matters to your car design career will care about your designs.
      So to answer your question, it depends on what you're looking to do. If you are doing special effects, sci-fi prop or ship design, this a completely transferable. It would also be appropriate for product design but the need to develop the flowing, fluid drawing style of auto designers is not necessary for most products.
      Without knowing what it is you're looking to do. it would be hard to say what is applicable and what is not. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

      How To Draw Cars
      Thank you very much for that lengthy and comprehensive explanation.
      I have drawn many cars, but not ever using a proper method until a few months ago.
      I was wondering how i could apply the speed form concept to humans and organic beings.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад +1

      Again, it depends. If you are doing fine are drawings, then it does not apply as the technique would look too fluid. It works great if you are drawing dancers but for seated poses I find I have to switch techniques and go back to the fine artist in me. If you are doing character development/ creation, then you can use the speed forms exercise to work on new vocabularies for your characters. If you want to send me some sketches, I'll take a look and give you my feedback on how they can help. michael@howtodrawcars.net

      When you set up a shot to record someone doing a drawing you have a certain area of the page that is framed in the shot. If the drawing goes outside the frame, the video quality suffers and the video has to be redone. By doing a "pre-sketch" that I can slip under the top sheet that will keep the drawing perfectly in the frame I know I will get a quality video to post each and every time in one take. This is the drawing you see underneath. It's there to make sure the drawing is framed in the camera so I only have to do one take.
