    For this video, a student sketch of a sports car is redrawn to show the differences between how to use the three basic elements of car design drawings: line weight, line quality and drawing wheels to improve your sketches.
    Drawing cars is hard. Really hard. And doing car design drawings, drawing cars that do not exist in the real world yet, is even harder. Doing it correctly can be one of the most rewarding things to achieve if cars and design are your passion.
    This video shows you how to improve each of the basic elements of car design drawings. It gives tips and tricks to get your sketches looking professional. It shows the importance of drawing from your shoulder to get your sketches and the quality of your lines to flow across the page.
    The importance of line weight is discussed. How to vary the line weight can in your car design drawings to tell the story of your design. Lastly, the importance of drawing good quality eclipses in your car design drawings is discussed.
    All these elements are brought together in one sketch to show how they work together to make your car design drawings the best they can be. Each of these skills is discussed and demonstrated in videos of their own. Check the playlists to find them. Each is critical in improving the quality and professionalism of your automotive design drawings.

    Just found this channel, as someone who is an aspiring manga artist and car enthusiast, this helps, im currently in art college so this helps me in more than just leisure, not that these techniques are new to me, but it helps me understand which techniques i should be using more. Could you do some vids on the interior of the cars? such as the cockpit and the intricacies of te engine/fuel systems etc.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад +1

      Glad you found the channel. There is a lot of cross over from manga and comic book art to car design. Many designers draw figures in their car sketches. It's always good to draw things other than cars even if you want to be a car designer. It's like cross training for your talent.
      Interior technique is coming eventually. Regarding the engine and fuel systems, automotive designers generally are responsible for "engine beatification" or "under hood design" which are all those plastic panels you see covering the engines of modern cars. I don't know if that is what you meant in your request. That's a good idea though and you're the first to suggest it. Thanks.

    • @Verystoic
      @Verystoic 6 лет назад

      How To Draw Cars ah, respect, I'll await those vids. But yes that is somewhat what I meant, just curious what your approach would be to it. I'm a generalist as an artist, so I'm sort of just trying to master the last of my challenges, being cars.
      But anyway whatever suits your convenience, I'll keep an eye on these vids, very useful.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад +1

      It's funny that you asked about that as I got to do the under hood design for the 2 production exteriors I designed at Chrysler as well as the underwood design for Vector. This type of design work was in it's infancy then, nothing like the full on design programs they have now. But it was still fun to do it.
      At Chrysler, my sketches were based on photographs of the basic mock up of the engine the studio modelers made. They built a simple model from the engineering packaging drawing of where all the parts would be. I took some photos, went back to my desk and designed the engine compartment. They rebuilt the mock up to match my designs and we handed all the info back to engineering. It was not only a thrill to see the car on the road, but to see the engine sketches come to life when you popped the hood. That's what it's all about!
      As far as an approach, the first priority with any program, car, engine, product, sneakers, is to get your design picked. This is where the competition for drawing ability comes into play. You want your design to strand out from all the other excellent designs on the wall so you have to make the sketch emotional and engaging. So whatever techniques you would use to do that in other areas, I would apply to engine design.
      When I did my production engine design work, I was the only designer on the program. It was sort of a gift for doing exterior designs that got chosen for production. So my approach was much different. I was not interested in making astonishing sketches as much as doing a good design for the customer and something engineering could build. Also, detailed models were going to be made so many times, drawings done for a modeler are much different than presentation drawings done for management.
      The moral of the story is you have to have a lot of techniques in your arsenal to be a professional. You should be getting this in your coursework at college. It also helps that you're drawings of different things as well.

      How To Draw Cars yeah that basically sums it up. Considering I'm doing this both for manga and on another scale for production at some point, knowing the technicalities helps, getting inspiration from anime like initial d and The Grand tour. But thx for insight, gives me a better idea on how to approach existing companies if it suits me.

      Don't forget that the guy that designed the Ferrari Enzo got his job at Pinninfarina but submitting a portfolio not full of car design drawings, but a portfolio in which he turned himself into a comic book super hero. It had nothing whatsoever to do with how good a car designer he was. It showed off how creative he was and allowed him to stand out from the crowd.

    I find the shoulder technique quite difficult and clumsy, i nowadays do my sketches as digital art with a board, and im happy with what i do. My linework is not too good nor bad, for me the main point is putting ideas on the paper, not the technique:)

      Well you said it, you are happy with what you do. Many subscribers and watchers of the content on this channel have serious aspirations of becoming professional car designers some day. The main point of drawing is exactly what you say it is, to put your ideas down on paper. The problem with not learning the correct technique (if you want to become a professional car designer) is, that no matter how good your ideas are, no one who will matter to your future career will care about your ideas if you cannot represent them in a professional way. That is a cold hard fact. Drawing from your shoulder is hard. If it was easy it wouldn't take 10,000 hrs of practice to master it. There are many different styles of representing and rendering ones ideas within the car design community. But there is a baseline of ability that you need to develop and master, without it, drawing cars will be just a hobby. And that's OK if that's all you want. The content here is designed and aimed at those who want a career as a car designer. Teaching the basic techniques and practices of the profession is the goal of the channel. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

      Automotive designers use a specific drawing technique to achieve a certain look to their sketches. If you want to be a car designer, you have to learn to draw this way. If you really want to learn how to do this, I would suggest checking out this course as there is a whole lecture on how to do it. The lecture shows the technique from different angles. www.udemy.com/introduction-to-automotive-design/

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  4 года назад +2

      The right pencil will help. You need to be aware of how much pressure you applying to whatever media you are using. The more pressure the darker the line, usually. Learn to draw light lines to start. The lighter you can sketch, the more contrast and line weight differential you can create in your drawings. Check the video on the McLaren sketch. It covers line weight too.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  7 лет назад +2

      Even professional car designers draw lines they don't like. This is how you find what it is you're looking for. The difference between how they are drawing and how you are drawing is they are drawing very lightly. If you draw a line that you do not like and it's very light, it's easy to draw a better line over it. No need to erase it. If you watch the video you will see that I start out drawing very lightly and build the line weight up as I go. I would suggest you watch the How to Draw Cars video on line weight. It will explain the concept further and help you. Thanks for your question.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  4 года назад

      It depends on the type of drawing. Typically for fine art drawing it doesn't help. If you're doing product, interior or environmental design it can be helpful. But automotive design is really the realm of the drawing from the shoulder technique. It's only taught in transportation design at the college/ university level. Other disciplines do not teach it.

The new Acura NSX exterior, the new Chrysler Minivan exterior and the new BMW Z4 sports car exterior and interior were all done by very talented female car designers. Look on youtube for the stories about the development of these cars. For example, Jay Leno has the women from Acura on his Jay Leno's Garage show. Show these to your dad so he can see that you can make your dream come true too. Best of luck.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  7 лет назад +2

      if you watch when I put in the ground plane, I draw 2 lines that are like a very open "V". The line on the left side of the page becomes the axis of the front end or short axis of the car, and the line on the right side of the page is longer and becomes the axis for the body side of the car. This creates the foundation for the 3-D effect that I think you are referring to.

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  5 лет назад +1

      You don't. There is a different method for that. Almost every student I work with draws their wheels off axis. I teach them make the wheels square to the ground plane first, then move to the more advanced technique of drawing a cylinder in perspective. If I teach the more advanced way first, they never improve.

      I do a rough sketch that I use as an underlay to make sure what I will draw in the video actually fits in the frame. These videos take a long time to produce. The last thing I want is to film the entire process only to find out in post production that what I drew is not in the shot. There are a few of the other videos where I show the underlay before I start. On a related note, you should be using underlays as a way to improve all aspects of your design drawings.

  • @Mello.
    @Mello. 6 лет назад +10

    I love your work but I don't think you really caught what the original what trying to be it wants to be a sleek fast car but your version made it look like a watered down cousin of the Lamborghini Gallardo anyways still a nice sketch

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your feedback. As stated in the description, the purpose of the video was more about the drawing technique and not about the design. I agree that the original car was pretty sleek but so many people who tune into this channel are looking to improve the look of their sketches and this is done by improving your drawing technique.
      Not being able to draw with your shoulder is the number one thing holding back most young aspiring designers. In the end, no one who matters to your career as a car designer will care about your designs if you cannot represent them in a more professional way. The purpose of all these early vids on my channel is to address the vacuum of information concerning correct drawing technique. Working on what is essentially a much more complex subject, design vocabulary, will come later. Thanks again for your feedback.

      Because if you look closely there is a drawing below

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  7 лет назад +3

      I have the original drawing that I did as part of the tutoring session with BK under the sheet I am drawing on. I actually cannot see it with the studio lights on. Newsprint paper is not really good for tracing. When you do one of these videos it is important to make sure the sketch will fit in the frame of the camera. We set up the shot with the original drawing and then I slipped it under the top sheet and put a couple of tick marks on the page to insure that the sketch I am doing for the video is going to fit. I'd be kind of sad if I was doing a sketch for the video and the car didn't fit in the frame! Thanks for watching.

      As mentioned in the vid, it wasn't really about the design. The process is what is important.

    im 15 years old...and i have always wanted to be a car designer....is it too late for me to start with the basics and work my way up?

    • @howtodrawcars.
      @howtodrawcars.  7 лет назад +1

      No it's not too late. It helps you you have some natural talent to draw though. Since you are starting a bit late I would make sure you practice everyday and learn as much as you can each day so you are always improving your skills. Work on your drawing technique first. Do not worry about the designs too much. Once you learn to draw you can develop your design vocabulary. Then you'll have the whole package. Take a look at our tutoring program if you want to accelerate your skills - www.howtodrawcars.net
